I haven't given it a full test yet as I know im going to upgrade the OS... But at first impression with the DDR3 and the intel P8700 seem like a great combo not to mention the M240 graphic card! It's more powerful than my quad core Q6600 desktop for sure! Loving every second of it, the only little glitch i see every once in a while is the keyboard seems to revert to the chinese language for a character or two?! Anyone ever had that issue before, other than that little quirk i give it a 9 out of 10 and a for sure recommend to a friend rating!!!

The 130m overclocks very well with the DDR3. I managed to get a stable result at 730/966/1650. There appears to be a good 10% - 20% increase with a 1-2 degree increase in the GPU core temperature.
The 240m should give a result that is on average 20% higher than the 130m. I do not see the 240m overclocking well however. If anyone try's please post the results.
Also for those that got the white palm rest, is it also a fingerprint magnet. -
could someone teach me how to overclock? lol
And do I need like a cooler, the y550 usually run VERY cool, never gets hot but it might if I overclock the 130m gt
Also, would an overclocked 130m gt overclocked be better than a 240 m regular
And can u overclock the 240m?
lol -
Why you want to overclock??
But if you really want to/need to heres a guide:

I own the y530.
great laptop when i think of it.!
wish i had i higher res than wxga
thinkpads are better quality tho.
man my spacebar and "o" key are really messed up!
i manage with the space bar, but the o key is killing me
and popping out the keyboard is pretty difficult not to mention the $70 for a new one. I also wish there was a 9 cell batt. option and that the laptop was more popular! -
Lenovo sucks
I waited a month and a half dealing with the crappy company and now I'm sitting here with this pimp g51vt-x05 asus from best buy and I got it within a week
AND I got it cheaper than the y550.
Lenovo will fade away from my memory bank, and Asus just found themselves a newly devoted customer. -
It is good to hear that you are happy with your laptop.
Too bad Lenovo did not offer you a better costumer support, perhaps you had bad luck...but dont defame Lenovo because of that, their ThinkPad models have supposedly much better support and are quality products.
Anyways, congratulations on your purchase and enjoy your new lappie! -
Nothing against their laptops; I wouldn't know I didn't get to even buy/use one. Although I did use an old IBM thinkpad and that thing was marvelous, although I've been reading that ever since Lenovo took over, the quality of the product isn't up to par with IBM's old standards. No matter how much one would want to credit lenovo for making a quality laptop, their customer service division is still a black sheep within the company. Service is apart of the company and it reflects poorly on the company as a whole.
Take sprint for example, they have great prices, coverage area, and nice phones. But their customer service is notorios for being horrid, so they've been bleeding customers.
Hell I called lenovo this morning to confirm my cancellation and the guy tried to give me an estimated shipping date. I've called three times just to simply cancel the damned thing and I get the same reply, "Okay, I'll cancel it for you and it should be completed within 1-2 business days." I call a week later and they want to still give me an "estimated shipping date." I'm really not a picky person, and I tried to make this process as simple as possible; all I wanted to do is give them my money for one their laptops and they failed at that.
In all honesty, I have no doubt in my mind that I would've liked the y550. It's definitely a bang for the buck (call them and ask for the best discount, they'll give you 15% off (employee pricing) after a bit of convincing). -
Does it work with ThinkPads?
Well, that is terrible to hear...well, you still got a great laptop for your money. -
I want to put AS5 on the CPU, GPU and GPU memory. I opened up that main bottom piece and see the heatpipes but it looks like I have to take more apart to fully remove the heatpipes. Who has done this and how extensive is the disassembly process?
thx. -
The heat pipes slide right out.
Start with the cpu pipe, its slides right out. The gpu pipe also slides right out, you just need to find the right angle. -
-
Thanks! Can do that via internet? (I live in France, but I am ordering in the US, and a relative will bring it to me here...)
-
Hi guys, i'm considering getting either the Y550 or the T500.
For the Y550, what kind of battery life are you guys getting when not gaming?
Also, since i've never had an ideapad before, how well does it seem to be built for you guys so far? Is it really sturdy? I know it's not going to be as sturdy and well built like the Thinkpad line but i'm curious how the ideapads are.
Thanks guys. -
Here is a couple of months old review of the Y550. It sported the GT130M then.
http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-y550/10461.html -
Do you know if it's possible to order from the Lenovo.com website and have it delivered to Canada? On the Canadian website, they currently only offer the Y450.
I know the answer is probably "no" but I thought I'd check.
Thanks -
Unfortunately, Lenovo ONLY ships to the US.
Perhaps a relative and then shipping it to yourself? -
I don't have family in the States, but it's OK, I can still buy one from NCIX.com. This seems like a decent price.
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=42579&vpn=41867BU&manufacture=Lenovo
(It says "integrated" graphics in the specs list, but the title says it has the GT130M. This was confirm via email to their sales department.)
The one in America has the 2 year accidental coverage for $10, which is why I was asking. I guess I'll have to refrain from dumping tea on the keyboard... -
The newer Y550s have the GT240M in case you didn't know.
-
Thanks. Ya, I've read about that while perusing the posts here. I'm not convinced the performance is going to be that different given that I'm only a casual gamer.
I guess that means that the Canadian companies are selling the (slightly) older models. It seems Lenovo likes to take their time breaking into the Canadian market. I guess we are only 1/10 the population of our southern neighbours (make that neighbors...). It's not a big deal. It's only a laptop, after all!
-
Its your call really. You can pick one right now or afford to wait for another couple of months then pounce on the best package being offered.
-
That's true. I wonder if there will be better deals during the annual Christmas panic just around the corner. Maybe I'll wait...
Thanks for the advice, Pranalien -
I may have read this already in the posts, but I can't remember. The GT130M that's in the older Y550 models; what is the memory size? I see a 1GB version ( http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-130M.13789.0.html) but maybe it's 512MB.
Thanks all -
Memory size is not that big of a problem, in fact over 512 makes little difference unless the GPU can handle it.
The most important thing is the bandwidth, which both the GT130M and the newer GT240M are 128bit. And memory type is quite important too. -
That's all that DDR2/DDR3/GDDR2/GDDR3 talk about, right? Is it just a question of frequency, size, and energy usage, or is there more?
Also, did we get a consensus which one is in the Y550? -
The GT240M using 512bit GDDR3 and a 128nit bus/bandwidth on the Y550 on the newer models.
Yes, for more info, there are some good threads in the gaming Forums about the memory type of the GPU.
Basically, as a summary, GDDR5>GDDR3>DDR3>DDR2 in the same GPU. -
What about in the GT130M?
... GDDR5?!?! Haha -
doesnt exist...sorry
the only 128bit card with GDDR5 I can recall is the 4770HD ATI. -
The Nvidia website says the GT130M is equipped with either DDR2 or GDDR3. Do we know which is in the Y550?
-
Lenovo is known to use GDDR3 as the memory on the GPUs, I dont see why they would change that.
NVIDIA website simply says that there is the DDR2 variant, like the one HP uses IIRC, but Lenovo uses GDDR3 -
@serg
You probably can't bargain via online, but if you absolutely need to get it online then don't forget to check http://www.dealigg.com/story-Lenovo-Coupons-Promotions .
good luck on your purchase and hope nothing goes sour. -
It looks like lenovo has removed a couple Y550 configurations from their website. Anyone else getting this problem?
-
Confirmed. They are gone. (Y550+GT240M)
Thanks vvaid117, but the W500 I was after got a higher price now...I found a good deal on a Dell SXPS16 with i7. I think I am going that way (too bad, I was liking Lenovo, but Dell offered something a lot better for less) -
If you want to buy one of these laptops, you should call lenovo and talk to a representative.
For me, i called twice and both representatives said they couldn't place the order for me. However, the second representative gave me his direct line number and told me to call him when i see it available online again. He said he would see if he could give me the same price i saw for the columbus day sale. So if you want to buy one of these despite the fact that it's sold out, you can get one for the same price (hopefully) later when it's available. -
I think the Y550 with 240m is back:
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...002706:&smid=653343E0DE54435882FABC3CE1BC569A
Anyone know how good this would be for a budget gamer? -
Very good.
The 240M is a quite good GPU -
I knew I should have gotten the upgrade warrenty
But still, this y550 with the 130m gt is still serving me VERY well -
I want to buy Y550, but the dimensions are a bit odd. Is it really 15.2" wide? That's a bit too long
-
Well, it is a 16:9 ratio, which makes the laptop wider.
-
Anyone got any word on the Windows 7 disc that was the 'free 17$ upgrade'.... i can't wait to get rid of Windows Vista but can't remember when they said it would ship
-

Re: my y550, i got it back in august, i love it, except i think the noise level went from silent to audible, which pisses me off.
-
does y550 have any heat issue? like fan constantly turn on?
-
nope, doesnt get hot at all, just slightly warm sometimes
the fan only turns on when your doing something that needs the processor or gpu alot, but it still runs warm, not hot -
Is there going to be a BIOS update for that W7 EE thing they keep going on about?
-
what are the chances that lenovo will mess up my customization, say I ordered gt 240 1 gb, but can they put 256 mb? i don't know kinda worry lol.
I am still waiting for it to ship next week (hopefully) 7 more days for it to ship
I got
2.53 ghz intel core 2 duo 1066mhz fsb
gt 240 1 gb
4 gb ddr3 1066 mhz
Intel wifi 5100
Do you guys think the gt 240 can play assassin's creed 2?? lol I haven't play game in 3 years. Kinda excited. So far all my y550 exceed all the requirements for it. but not sure about the graphic card. -
Gt240 only has 1Gb version, lenovo won't change anything at all
From my experience, if you bought a laptop that over 1000 , lenovo would like to ship it to you ASAP when it finish built. At that moment , your package will ship by indiviual shippment
But if you bought something under 1000, lenovo will ship almost the last day of ETD with mass packages shippment, which can reduce the cost
From my experience, lenovo ship my x300 in 3 business day after I placed my order, X61s( after it lanuch, atm it was very expensive) ,5 days. T400s, 3 days
But , i bought y550 before, it took 11 business day to ship -
Hi, all fellow y550 users. I got mine a while ago and have been happy so far.
Hare is my question: I would like to connect the laptop to my av-amplifier using S/PDIF. Has any of you done this? In the device manager there are two sound devices (nVidia and realtek), this would suggest that I can connect to the amp using the hdmi or the 3.5mm jack in the front.
In the amplifier I have optical (not useful here) and RCA audio inputs. So I would need either 3.5mm -> RCA adaptor or HDMI -> RCA+DVI. Is this correct? Any suggestions if I should use the hdmi or fromt-jack?
Somewhere in this thread I saw comments about optical-out. Was this just misuse of the word optical or do some of you actually have optical out in your laptops? -
I wonder if it is possible to turn the lcd screen of y550 off, and use an external monitor instead sometimes? If I use both of them at the same time, the native resolution of my monitor is 1920x1080 and I'll have to change to that setting for my laptop.
Will there be any issue like the laptop have to work harder and such?
Shout to Y550 ideapad owners
