Did you order your laptop through Lenovo? Has the doorbuster deal expired?

-
Yeah, the i7 will not be very beneficial there IMO.
The faster C2D fits perfectly -
-
Wait until they release the new line of processors that will consume less and be faster.. otherwise you will end up with a laptop that lasts 40 minutes per battery charge.
-
@Blazin
Specifically, how did you get that model y550 (p8700 and 240) for $668? I tried buying it yesterday and saw no doorbuster deal like that.
I have seen the lower end (t6600 and integrated graphics) around $668 so any info you can give me on how to get the higher end model for that price would be awesome!
I'm thinking about calling and complaining and trying to get it for that price because their website is so da**ed buggy
Also, what is the doorbuster deal for today? I cant seem to find it on their website either
*Since this is my first post, I suppose I should say "hello" to the forums. So Hello
I've read all 26 pages of this thread lol. I like to be VERY informed before I buy.
I must say this website has been most helpful and I'd like give big shoutout to the community for being so dang helpful!!! (end off-topic-ness lol) -
-
OK, so the Y550 w/C2D has 4.5hrs of battery life, but because the newer Y550p uses the i7 then the battery life should be significantly lower, maybe a couple of hrs?
The reason why I am asking is because I do a lot of writing and I plan to use my new laptop for three or four hours without having to worry about using a power cord.
I guess I would not need the Y550p w/i7 since I plan to use my new laptop for writing, oral presentations, Internet (Facebook), email and multimedia/gaming? -
Thank you for the timely help sir
@blazin, I have contacted their sales department and they have said that they might able to do something for me if they see how you got theirs.
so I was wondering if you wouldn't mind emailing me the order number you got when you ordered your y550? If i give them your order number and they see the exact discount you got they might give me the same discount.
you can reach me at w in ej u g 8 7 (at) h ot mai l . com (nospaces, beware of bots lol)
I apologize if this is a personal question...? but as far as I know asking for a order number wont give me any of your personal information...am I right?
anyways, thanks in advance for your help
(I would have pm'ed you but I cant seem to find a pm function on this forum) -
It is just an awesomw deal. i7 820QM with 20% off using ecoupon, total is just about $1169. not ot mention 240M, 4GB, 500GB. Hp or Dell will even cost you more than this at least 500 bucks
Look at Lenovo website.
There is a funny thing. i7 720QM with 240M, 4GB, 320GB is about $1249. With 20% off, Total will be $1089. But if I remeber it right, upgrade to i7 820QM will cost you more $350 -$400 for Dell or HP laptops. Not ot mention 500GB > 320 GB with the same 5400rpm.
How come lenovo price them defferently just $150? -
Too bad the USPBLKFRIDAY coupon code does not apply to the Y series. It only applies to some of the others through midnight tonight.
I wanted to use it along with the USP15SVEBIG coupon code (which I believe expires tomorrow) through CPP to save some money.
Shout out to Lenovo's reps! Allow the USPBLKFRIDAY coupon code to also work with the Y550 and you've got yourselves a deal. -
^^ normally those coupons are not stackable...it wouldnt be good for them
-
I used it USP15SVEBIG on Y550 core i7 820QM, 240M, 4GB, 5400GB , $1399 - 15% off and I aiso got some discount for being a Georgia Tech studetn.
So Total I will play just $1169. Is it a good deal? -
For an i7 820QM? Sure! That CPU is expensive...too much for my taste and to justify it...but for less than 1.2K an 820QM is great
-
Do Not Post CPP access codes -

3 Yr At-home IdeaPad Warranty with 3 Yr Accidental Damage Protection
I decided against adding Blu-ray since it is not needed (I do not own any Blu-ray discs). The three-year warranty and accidental coverage was less than $140 and I consider that a steal compared to Best Buy. The final price with tax and free shipping came to $1,029. I saved nearly $900 with two discounts. -
That's really a great deal and a nice laptop that you got there, agnusdei! I looked at some youtube videos of the Y550 with the GT240M and it is very impressive for gaming. You are so right about the warranty. I heard Lenovo's 3yr warranty and accidental coverage is around $135. Best Buy wanted to charge me over $400 for an extended warranty if I had bought one of their low-end, retail laptop models. That wasn't going to happen!
-
I used my Ga Tech student discount + 20% off From Bing cash back discount . the final price with tax + free shipping = $997.40 -
I really wanted the 500HDD, but in my case the price would have gone up much higher. Unfortunately, I was not able to use my Providence College student discount because I technically graduated from grad school last May even though I am still working on my thesis project. :GEEK: I could only use the 15% discount along with the not-so-great CPP discount....
But I am not complaining even though the outrageous RI tax made the price go up a little high and I really do not need a HDD larger than 320GB right now because I use computers mostly for lightweight work and gaming so that's fine. If I need to later on I will upgrade the HDD in my Y550 to one that is much better and faster (500GB 7200 RPM), but I doubt this will ever happen because I never had to use a HDD larger than 320GB. -
NBR Official Review has been posted on the News Forum.
You can read it here. -

Indeed it is agnusdei. Such a nice laptop you all guys have there, and a very good review.
I am only waiting for my HP to come to review it...(I know, "what is an HP person doing on a Lenovo Forum?"...sorry dont blame me I like helping ^^)
Anyways, overall good review, and consider that reviewers here are somewhat nit-picky (no pun intended) -
I give a lot of credit to our friend Serg because he went out of his way to help educate me and refer me to a variety of laptops during my long and stressful process of searching for a new laptop.
Thank you once again, Serg, for your patience and guidance! -
No problem at all! I am here to help.
So, any updates people? -
Another doorbuster deal today on Lenovo's website.
Not as good as the one blazin scored, but still drops the price on a model similar to his down to 800.
follow this link http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/special-offers.workflow:ShowPromo?LandingPage=/All/US/Special%20Offers/Overview -
Not bad those deals, specially the 20% on the T400

I ordered the y550 on December 1st with decent 2.2 ghz t6600, 4gb ram, 320gb hdd, btooth, and nvidia geforce 210m. I was on a tight budget so had to either go for the 2.1 ghz with 240m or 2.2 with 210m. I chose the 2.2 bcz I do more multitasking with like 20 tabs and Word open at a time. Now after I have ordered I feel bad I didn't go for the 240.how much of a difference is there? I dont gAme much, I only occasionally play l4d or cod4. Can this card handle medium settings? Cz I don't like playing on low settings. After researching the 210m, the only downside seems that it has not many shaders.
In summary, is there much of a difference to pay $50+ more to get the 240? -
Hi there and welcome to the NBR Forums!
If you ask me, for a 50 dollars difference, it is worth for the 240. Double the memory bandwidth and more powerful -
I agree with Serg, who has been a major help in these forums, ty
I'm not an expert on CPU's but I think the 2.1 ghz would have been able to handle a lot of the multitasking. As long as it was the T and not the P i think you should be fine because the P line processor focuses on processing specific applications but can multitask, although not as well (I think). T is more for multitasking (from what I heard)
Anyway, if it were me I would have gone for the 240 m, since the 2.1 could probably handle alot of multitasking, but lets wait for someone else's reply.
(I know more about GPU's since thats what I was looking for with my y550, but that was when it came with the 130m lol) -
Thanks Ryan for the compliments.
Well, in fact the 2.1GHz (most likely a T6500 I am guessing) is quite capable of multitasking and it is fast enough for most tasks.
In the matter of T vs P, it is a matter of stressing the CPU to see real advantages. The P series only bear the advantage of consuming up to 25W at full load. The T series will get up to 35W in the same scenario, but not that when idling, both get the same numbers, or very close ones. (NOTE: it is not that all T series get to 35W, it is a bracket, from 26W up to 35W, if you ask me it is marketing gimmick). But as multitasking, both are the same.
For example, the P9500 at 2.53 vs the T9400 at 2.53. Same FSB, same L2 Cache, same clocks. Only difference is the rated TDP, which as said, is a range, not strictly a number, you could even get a T using only 27...but who knows, Intel wont tell you...but as performance between those 2 they are almost exactly on par, having some small differences on certain tasks, which is normal when benchmarking laptops.
If you want more info on this matter, there is a guide I wrote some time ago, the link is in my signature. The Intel Processor Information Guide.
Hope this helps! -
Hi -
I just ordered the Y550 from Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146613
I like everything in this configuration except for the 5400RPM hard drive.
I would love to replace this with an SSD drive.. Has anyone done this? What SSD drive should I buy? Any feedback much appreciated.. -
Hi there gout, and welcome to the NBR Forums!
About the SSD, it depends on your budget, it is said that Intel G2 SSDs are the fastest ones, but not the largest.
The Samsung are the largest, but not the fastest.
I think Kingston is rated as slowest.
OCZ is on par with Intel last time I checked.
Perhaps you might want to ask on the Hardware Components and Aftermarket Upgrades Forum, though I would recommend this thread before posting. -
Oh well..i cant wait any longer for it to arrive...i think ill stick with the 210m, but is it possible to manually upgrade the card at home? I know with some laptops it is impossible to do that without damaging it. If not, next yr when i go to India, ill take it with me to get it done by a pro somehow for a fraction of the price than here in US.
Thanks for the advice tho! -
I am 99% sure the GPU is non-upgradeable, but I would love to be proven wrong.
-
yea, I kinda want to upgrade my 130 m to a 240m
When I was with customer service they asked me about an upgrade warranty (which now I'm regretting not getting).
I'm guessing it is possible to upgrade the gpu because of this but I have no idea -
I think not, but there is a very very small chance it is possible. If the GPU is using MXM it could be done, at the expense of your warranty and effects on it, but it would mean a replacement only.
If it is soldered, I am sorry, but it wont be possible. -
I dont have any solid info, but I remember reading somewhere that it is not soldered in but I cant remember for the life of me where.
hope this encourages you enough to use the almost all knowing Google. -
the cpu is upgradable though. and by the looks of it it seems quite easy.
I asked the person if the gpu can be upgraded...

I just ordered a Y550p (i7!) and should be getting it in the next 2 or 3 days. I was heavily leaning towards a Dell Studio XPS 16, but for around the same price as a C2D Dell I got the i7 Lenovo. Also, I was a little turned off by all the negative comments regarding ATI4670/i7 equipped SXPS 16 Dells. The screen resolution is lacking compared to the Dell, but after using a WXGA display for the last few weeks, I'm sure I'll be able to live with it. Plus, whenever I get back into gaming I should be able to run most titles at the Lenovo's native resolution considering the GT240M is a pretty stout card.
I kind of wanted to wait until next year when the new intel cpus come out, but I've been really needing a computer for the last week or so. My mother bought a Y510 when they first came out, and it has been a pretty solid machine. I'm hoping for more of the same from the Y550p. I'm really curious how the cooling system performs at moderate to high loads, and if it suffers from the same throttle-gate issues that seem to be plaguing other i7 computers. Wish me luck.
I'll gladly take pretty pictures and give my opinion of the machine when it comes in. -
Y550
Pros:
1 Super cool even under heavy loads, I have been played envy 15 for a while, but I finally returned it cuz it was over heated. It's not possible to touch plamrest when it's in middle loads.
2 Noise is under controlled, acceptable. The fan does not always run, even it's running, the noise is still not annoying , which envy 15 me off.
3 The power , volum buttons are very nice though.
4 I like the Lenovo One Key Theater.
5 fair price and well built. ( I was thinking low resolution will be very bad at first, but after I use it for a while, I found I don't have any problems with it)
Cons:
The main issue I don't like is the keyboard! It's so easy to leave finger's oil on it, after I only used about a week, I can clearly see "oil" in F, and j keys.
Not possible to add second hard drive, unless you open up 20 screws w/o offical manual
I totally recommand this machine to everyone, you will love it. -
So I when my laptop came in last week I noticed that it came with a glossy gray arm rest but my cover is not glossy. Now I remember when I ordered it I had the the glossy cover and white arm rest checked. Which initially I wanted switched but they said it'd delay my order so I said F it and would just take the white. I emailed Lenovo about this last week and still no answer. Their customer support is absolutely terrible. Has any one else encountered this problem? Or is it supposed to come in that color. Just wanted to make sure before I called in and ed about it only to look stupid. Thanks!

Just got my y550 yesterday, cant do a full review yet due to the little lady won't let me play with it till xmas but would like to pass on what I can. Couldn't be happier with lenovo. Ordered the nov. 27 was built and waiting to ship on the nov. 4th friday ups got it monday and I got it yesterday morning (with everything just as I ordered it), couldn't ask for more. Build quality is very nice everything fits nice including the battery saw a pic in this thread showing a gap between the battery and case, this is not the case on mine. The keyboard is very nice with very little flex, only flex to the case is right next to the ideapad logo, right of the touchpad (creaks if pressed down hard). The screen is nice no dead or burnt pixels. The touchpad is pretty good but its only been used with the sticker over it so will probably be better when I can take it off xmas day. Overall I'am very happy with the laptop, will say more after xmas (its already wrapped and under the tree).
-
Where you talk about the flex and creaking, I have the same on mine but everything else is good still
-
argg... still waiting Windows 7 shipment, Vista blows anyone gotten their windows 7 upgrade disc recently??!
-
First time running 3DMark06:
-
Do you guys hear noise in the headphone? try play a mp3 file and pause it.
-
Have you tried several pairs of headphones?
How high is the volume?
Is it static sound?
Shout to Y550 ideapad owners
