To partly answer my own question: It indeed seems that the front headphone jack is also OPTICAL S/PDIF connector. Usually when connector seems to be coaxial, works as coaxial, it IS coaxial. Well in this case it isn't so :).

Could someone confirm that the optical S/PDIF works with mini-TOSLINK cable?

It seems crazy that even the Y550 manual doesn't say that this is mini-toslink, or even that it is optical connector. How would the consumers know how to buy the right cables.

I might order the y550 with GT 240M

Does this run fairly cool while gaming?

My last Laptop reached insane temps of 109c in 5 minutes of being on.

@BearPowers... That combo is for portable gaming! Ive played Fallout3 and WoW on occasion as well as Crysis since I got the machine about a month ago and absolutely love the power.
It gets warm to the touch but not burning hot like your previous one

my 130m gt y550 plays crysis just fine on medium and its playable on high, so a 240 should do great

Plus it never gets hot, just warm

ok I just got my laptop, and I am confused, it is supposed to be window 7 home premium 64 bit, but it is still vista home premium 64 bit. What should I do? I mean the laptop came with the window 7 sticker, and the license key sticker in the back also.

Annndddd the fun begins. Selected the 2 day shipping option. It shipped on 11/11 and I got it today, 11/16. Strike one.

I boot up the Y550 and wait what's that? Windows Vista? That's not what I ordered. There are Windows 7 stickers on the front and back. . So I call tech support, and the not so nice tech in Atlanta wants to know the machine "type" which isn't anywhere on the machine. So he boots me. I end up calling Tech again, only to be told to call a different tech number.

Finally I get through. I explain my problem and am promptly put on hold for 15 minutes. Was told to do the onekey recovery, and to sit on the phone for 20 minutes until the process completes. That is where I am now. Anyone else order Windows 7 and get Vista? Lenovo is not making me happy right now...

Update: onekey recovery did not work and I still have Vista. Brilliant. Was told to call the Post Sales department in the morning. I will hopefully be able to return this machine for a full refund and buy a laptop from a more reliable company.

Late shipment? Check. Rude customer support? Check. Shipped with wrong OS? Check. That's my Lenovo experience. I am gonna guess that another company can do better than that.

Ha ha want to know about my experiences:

Notebook 1: Toshiba- Ran well for 2 years, had extended warranty, service engineers bricked it. Toshiba unwilling to compensate

Notebook 2: HP Pavilion- Running for last two years, 4 services, 3 motherboard replacements, defective hardwares like wireless, GPUs,etc.

I am tired to be honest. I just got a Dell Inspiron for my sister. My own purchase will be either Dell or Lenovo. Take your time and decide. Atleast your hardware is functional. I was not that fortunate.

I forgot to mention that the Y550 doesn't hold an internet connection. It connects for 5-10 seconds, then drops, reconnects, and repeats the process. I made several adjustments but to no avail.

Call them up again. And persist with them, asking for a replacement. However doublecheck if its really a hardware issue.

So I call the tech. department, and the guy told me to call back in 2 weeks to see if they have the upgrade disc for window 7, or the other option is to pay 17$ for the upgrade disc from microsoft. suck ball major. but i don't care, window vista is fine for now

You'd be taking your chances at this point. It's clear they have no idea how the Vista/Win7 issue happened and it's just as clear they don't know how to solve it.

That is a fair concern, we do have a number of affected Y550 customers who are receiving systems this week that mistakenly shipped with a Vista image.
These are limited to 4186CTO units purchased directly from Lenovo's website.

We have corrected the line and new shipments would have the proper image.

We are finalizing our field plans to resolve this issue and plan to communicate to our affected customers shortly.

    Hi Everyone,

After a lot of hassle with the shipping and now with the laptop having Vista and not 7.. I have finally been able to say it was a good buy.

I got the y550, with 4gb of ram and a 240m nvidia card and I can run about any game with very good resolution (GTA 4, Dragon Age, NFS shift, mass effect and left for dead 2) and i am very happy with it/

I ended up wiping the whole thing out and installing windows 7 x64 ultimate. Finding all the drivers was kind of a pain but nothing that Google couldnt help me with. There also a virtualization problem that can be fixed with a bios hack..
so, it sounds like a lot but trust me, I am the kind of guy who hates to jump through hoops to make things work but in the end, for the price i paid for this, I can say it was fine.

I called lenovo and they said that the windows 7/vista OS issue should be resolved in 2 business days.

^ what processor do you have? do you think I can run assassin's creed 2 when it come out? I have 2.53 ghz with the same specs you have.

Is it a good idea to run games on this/ or any laptop in particular? my laptop do get warm from just surfing with firefox with streaming movie... don't know if I can play games without killing it/shortening the life of processor.

DragonN, gaming is GPU bounded on most of the cases. If the GT240M can run AC2 the CPU is negligible.

Dont worry, if your CPU gets too hot, it will throttle to protect it self, which means it will cut down on resources and speed to save energy, therefore producing less heat, and the fan will do the rest. I see it hard killing the CPU by it being stressed constantly. So dont worry.

niithegoat, you need to pick up and test Assassin's creed 2 for pc when it comes out. Does your GPU get hot playing those games that you posted on youtube? I notice the left side of the palm rest (i assume that where the GPU is) get really hot when I tried to play Romance of the three kingdoms 11 (which is not that intensive despite i play everything in lower setting

...wishing my Windows 7 disc would ship, 1+ months since its release now and Vista is subpar. Anyone that has got the disc did you do a complete format and get rid of the extra (30 some gb) restore partition and just let Win7 use the whole drive? Im failing to see why i might need that partition going forward after I have the Win7 disc.

    niithegoat,
Are your videos of the games all at max settings, and if so, with AA and AF?

Also, could you post a video of Crysis too please? Thanks

I'm trying to compare your y550 240m with my y550 130m (which is still really good after 3 months) :p

    Yep - unibody.

Sure, I'll do crisis. I'll add fraps too. I keep the settings on high. Some games will have a "default high" so I use that. Most of the time it already recommends the high automatically.

You mind? How much you paid for it?

    I might order an i7 model Y550 on Newegg.com , $999 + shipping = $1024 total.

Do you guys think 6 cell battery can last more than 2 hours for the i7 820QM or even 720 QM model? I saw Lenovo has one on thier website but could not configure as i please.

However, only 6 cell battery is offering. Not even have 9 cell battery for Y550Model . Why?

The Y550 324156U model available on NewEgg (the $999 model) has 4.5hrs of battery life.

I am still trying to find out the battery life for the new Y550p.

OK, so the Y550 w/C2D has 4.5hrs of battery life, but because the newer Y550p uses the i7 then the battery life should be significantly lower, maybe a couple of hrs?

The reason why I am asking is because I do a lot of writing and I plan to use my new laptop for three or four hours without having to worry about using a power cord.
