Hi everybody, here are some notes about identifying your panel and confirming if you have a samsung.

    Follow this link: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/PART-LOOKUP.html

To locate your "type" ( see your order status, you'll find something like 7414CT ). Thats your type. Then you need to locate your serial number. It too is on your order status. Now simply submit the information and check out the part # listed for your flat panel.

    You'll see something like:

    Thats a samsung panel.

If you've already received your machine and are not satisfied with the display quality please check your panel using http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

If your manufacturer says: LTN141BT04002 then its a samsung panel.

If you dont have that, you dont have to worry about it. Please enjoy your superior quality amazingly sparkly LG display.

If you DO, then read on...

Complain to lenovo, write emails, write letters. Phone them and bug them. If we can get sufficient number of people to complain maybe we can get some deal / recall from Lenovo.

I've paid over a $1000 dollars. I'm a student and I really CANT afford to buy / repair these machines regularly. I wont be purchasing a new system for the next 3 years ALTEAST so i'm mighty pissed.

Moreover I'm new to the US so I dont know what kind of consumer laws do we have.

All I'm saying is that if we band together and complain together maybe all of us can benefit.

Dude I have the LG and I'm kinda disappointed with it. My 5.5 year old eMachine laptop has a nicer looking screen. So it's not just the Samsungs...

I'm with janko10 on this one, my LG Led doesn't look all very spectacular. I can see a gradient of light depending on the angle I'm looking at my screen -- and I'm talking raising or lowering my head 2 inches totally changes the ambient lighting stuff.

atlguy, no it has not shipped. Does it only show up when it's been shipped? I'm sure there are many people with the exact same numbers, since everyone gets 2767 when you order from the lenovo direct site and you probably get 42X6321 if you got the integrated camera.

    yeah thats LG.

    yeah thats LG.

For both of you guys, hows the display? More specifically, washed out colors?

janko10, viewing angles is one thing but washed out & bad colors is another. If you're not satisfied you my complain along with us as well.

not sure but it takes a while for it to be up on the site. And the reason you should take a look at your machine is because even though two people might have the same model number, their machines might use different components based on where / when / who made it.

I thought I may have had washed out colors at first, but realized (since this is my first laptop), that angles can screw things up badly. I'll let someone else say more accurately.

the colors seem pretty good to me. I don't really have anything to compare to except my old T23...

I adjusted the gamma when I first got my laptop and that did help a bit too.

What screen do you have? LG / Samsung? Incase its a samsung, can you post a photograph? Remember, the panel should be perpendicular to the camera.

Is it possible, due to the small sample size here, that this notion of a superior display is not fact, and on average the displays are the same? What is the hard evidence that the LG is vastly superior?

I've had both panels and I can easily say that LG panels look 100 times better. My Samsung panel didn't have LED backlighting (came on my T61) but brightness isn't the issue here.

The color white, on a Samsung panel, doesn't even look white. It's more of a blueish color. Even with color correction, it still looks like a washed out, faded, blueish white.

I've tried taking pictures of the LG panel vs the Samsung and the pictures really don't do it justice. I just wanted to chime in on this thread because I plan to buy future Thinkpads and I don't want to play this stupid lottery game again.

I was lucky enough to get a LG panel on this new T400. However, the only reason I got this model was because I wasn't satisfied with the LCD on my T61. LED backlighting was also a selling point, but I think an LG panel on a T61 would still be good enough.

Honestly, the LED backlighting is almost blinding. The setting one notch below max isn't bright enough though.

Lenovo needs to get their act together and only source from LG. If not, then I'm taking my business to Sony next purchase. Their panels are superior to all and their keyboards are starting to feel pretty darn good too.

Anything that is supposed to be white... is NEVER white. You can open Notepad, MS Word, ANYTHING. White just aint white on a Samsung panel. Doesn't even have to be blueish tint. The fact that it's so washed out makes it hard to read anything on that screen.

Do you have a T400 with a Samsung panel? If not, please dont unnecessarily scare people. I'm just waiting for my machine to arrive. Its supposed to have a samsung panel. I'm beginning to feel skeptical about the views that are expressed by most people here. I dont see this or any other forum being flooded with posts claiming defective samsung panels have ruined their investments in the T400. Besides one of the threads started here show inconsistencies / defective LG panels themselves. I've experienced both LG panels and Samsung panels in other products and I'm glad to say that the samsung panels do a great job.

If it were true that Lenovo manufactured huge number of defective machines with Samsung panels, I'm sure they'll face a class action lawsuit from a lot of people and samsung of all companies will be penalized.

Yes all this comes after I've started this thread myself. Let me see the "defective" samsung panel firsthand and then decide. This thread was meant for people with defective / problematic samsung panels to post their grievances.

Ok i just got my laptop. Its AMAZING! The screen is a samsung. The whites are whites. The reds are reds. No bluish tinge. No bad viewing angle! :D

Guess that puts to rest the whole conspiracy theory.

I checked even with my friends' laptop. He has an HP. A wonderful screen but the T400 screen is outstanding!

Verdict: SAMSUNG screens aren't at fault!

FWIW, it appears I have the LG as well. My previous laptop was a Sony (I had no choice, it was the only 13” notebook/LCD out at the time outside of Apple) and the LED LCD on it is a little bit brighter and it has better color saturation.

However, I wouldn’t consider the color on this LG panel washed out. Also, AT TIMES, I can see gradients—even when there’s nothing but white on the screen. Overall though, I’m still pleased, though not as good as my little Sony.

Well I just took the plunge and ordered a t400. I found the type number, but can't see the serial number yet. I'm assuming this is because it hasn't shipped yet?

Just curious, when it does ship, will they update my order status and put the serial number out? And also, if it turns out to be a samsung panel would it still be possible to return it even though it has shipped out?

Well my T400 shipped today and I've been eagerly awaiting to do the trick described in this thread to find out if it'll be LG or Samsung....but I cannot find the serial number...?

On the order status webpage, it says Shipped...but where do I find the serial number?

I get this for the LCD: 44C1347 SBB 14.1"WXGA+LEDB/L BTCAMWWAN

And my type I think is this: 2764CTO THINKPAD T400

    Help?

I've been told wait until I get my shipping confirmation...well I've gotten that and I still don't see it anywhere. Where should it be located?

    Thanks.

On your order status page, it should be under the first line that says 2764CT CONFIGURED SYSTEM. Right after the `Serial Number: ' bit on the second line. If it's not there yet, then you may just have to wait until it shows up.

I'm not actually sure how long it takes to show up; I looked mine up after I had already gotten the laptop and was trying to figure out what the part number for display was after I'd already noticed that it didn't look so hot and had checked out the LCD panel itself.

it does seem that it's showing up for most people by the time it's delivered though.

Hmmm...wonder if, since our part number is so similar tot he accepted LG part number here, that we have the LG panel that is designed for the camera...? Eh? Eh?

Do you have the laptop yet? If so, try running one of the programs listed on the first post to see which one you have.

Mine should be here today, so I'll check tonight and post back tomorrow.

Why do you say `unfortunately?' Does the panel look bad? I've been very impressed by the AUO panels that I've seen. Could you run PC Wizard and find out what the actual AUO panel part number is? Then we could look up the specs and see how it compares.

From a google of "N141C3", it looks like the T400's are now shipping with an LCD that is not LG or Samsung...

The manufacturor seems to be Chi Mei :( Similar Part Number --Who the deuce is Chi Mei?!?

    W...T...F... :(

Considering that your first impressions are not good, it seems like Lenovo's quality control is going the way of its customer service (hint: not up).

    Little more reading....

Seems that this may be the same panel dell uses as glossy in their m1330.
The review seemed good - http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3898&review=Dell+XPS+M1330 (scroll to the part about the screen)

Though there are numerous reports of unhappy m1330 owners returning their Chi Mei screens as they flicker and have trouble keeping their brightness.

Yup, N141C3-L07 looks like a newer Chi Mei panel. From looking at reviews for desktop LCD displays with their panels there seems to be a pretty wide range of quality. =(
