Here's the product info I dug up for the Chi Mei panels: http://www.cmo.com.tw/opencms/cmo/products/notebook/products_notebook_N141C3.html?__locale=en

    Panel Size 14.1" Wide
    Technology TN
    Resolution 1440x900
    Pixel Pitch(mm) 0.21075
    Active Area(mm) 303.48x189.675
    Outline(mm) 319.5x205.5x5.5
    Luminance(nits) 200
    View Angle (U/D/R/L) 20/45/45/45
    Contrast Ratio 400:1
    Support Color 262K
    Power Consumption (w) 5.5
    Response Time(ms) 10
    Weight (g) 400
    Electrical Interface LVDS
    Mass Production 2008Q2
    Remark CCFL, High Resolution

10ms is nice :), though don't know what to compare these to...anyone have these specs for the LG and Samsung panels?

Maybe that explains why I am not totally dissatified nor blown away. 400:1 sits right in between the samsung 300:1 and the LG 500:1

If you get the screen at the right angle it looks good. I'm still in my window for return, wonder if I should see if CDW or Lenovo will get me an LG.

Mine was ordered direct from Lenovo with implicit indications that I wanted the LG panel or no panel at all. This was noted (according to the phone rep) on my oder when it was initially placed...and then 2 more times when I called back only for this reason.

    Great work Lenovo.

Aside from the brightness...do you have the other specs for the LG or samsung?

I haven't found the Samsung specs anywhere, but the LG specs I found here:

    http://www.lgdisplay.com/homeContain/jsp/eng/prd/prd300_j_e.jsp

14.1" TFT LCD Panel for Notebook PC, White LED Back Light

    Model Name LP141WP2

    Active Area [mm] 303.3 x 189.5
    Outline Dimension [mm] 319.5 x 206.5
    Thickness [mm] 5.5
    Resolution 1440 x BGR X 900
    Aspect Ratio 16:10
    Pixel Pitch [mm] 0.211(120)
    Number of Colors 262,144(6bit)
    Luminance [cd/㎡] 300
    Color Saturation (%) 45
    Weight [g] 365
    Contrast Ratio 500:1
    Interface LVDS 2port
    Viewing Angle [˚,U/D/L/R] 50/90
    Color Temperature [K] -
    Response Time [ms] 16
    MP Schedule Q2. `08

Just a note though, the Chi Mei (CMO) N141C3 is a CCFL, not an LED panel. The Chi Mei LED panel is the N141C6 and has a luminance of 300 nits (but is otherwise equivalent). The LG CCFL panel LP141WP1 is 220 nits and has a 400:1 contrast ratio.

Are you saying that my machine does not have the LED screen? Is there any way to confirm that it is LED?

I guess what I'm saying is that from the panel number that you gave and according to the Chi Mei web site, it would appear that you've got a CCFL and not an LED panel.

If you've got the panel at full brightness and let the screen saver kick in long enough turn the screen off (or close the system to put it to sleep), does it take a while for the screen to `warm up' and get brighter when it comes back on? A florescent backlight will take a minute or so to get to it's maximum brightness when you turn it on, but with an LED there's no real delay. Other than that I'm not sure if there's any way to tell.

    Holy @#$@...

If that's true, then Lenovo has essentially stolen money from me. I ordered an LED panel. They confirmed an LED panel in my confirmation email and online. They told me they shipped an LED panel. But when doing the hardware research, which they obviously don't expect 99.9% of their customers to do...I find out they actually didn't give me what I paid for?!? And they're trying to hide this?!?

I don't know what to say...

CDW told me, but only after they confirmed it with their Lenovo rep. CDW is rock solid with me and they are Lenovo's top reseller, so I am not worried. They are following up with Lenovo direct and I will let you all know what I find out.

Well I just got my laptop back from their repair center and they either left my original panel alone or replaced it with another samsung panel even thought the specific request was for an LG. Oh well.

Well - I heard back from CDW this morning and indeed the screen that I was sold is NOT an LED model...we are working on a resolution to the situation.

Bottom line is that the Chi Mei panel is CCFL...so if you have the same part number coming, it is NOT LED backlit.

    hi people. BAD NEWS!!!

I was happy with my samsung panel ( very happy with the laptop in general ). But now i noticed theres a dark streak across the right hand side of the panel. Its not visible if you're viewing a colorful image but when you look at the right side of the screen on a white background its visible and irritating.

I called up Lenovo tech support and told them about it. They said they'll replace my panel. Dont know how their repair process works but I want to be sure they'll replace the panel properly.

Can someone throw some insight into their repair service? Will they directly replace the panel or first verify the problem and replace it? If they try to verify it then its gonna be a big issue as its very visible but for critiques like me its a big flaw. I'm very tensed!! Someone please shed some light! :(

@atlguy: they will try to verify the problem first and then if they don't see anything wrong and if the display is "functioning" according to their tests and specs, then they won't replace it. I'm currently trying to have my screen replaced due to a strong fade in brightness from bottom to top. The technician said that he sees it but since the engineer (who wouldn't speak with me and apparently isn't allowed to have direct contact with customers for some unknown reason) didn't find it to be outside of specifications, the technician had to escalate me to somebody else. Your mileage may vary but they definitely verify and contact you first before replacing it.

hey. does it take a couple days for your parts list to show up after it ships? mine shipped 9/18.
when i put in my type and serial number (7 digit number), it says no parts to list. ordered 9/11,
shipped 9/18. they also sent it expedited, which i didn't pay for. can't wait!

thanks! i thought it might take a couple days. i want to check on my warranty too. got 3 year with accidental coverage. it will be nice to not have to worry about spills and stuff... honestly i don't know why laptop manufacturers put sub-par screens in their computers. i for one, would much rather either wait or not have the **** thing than have a bad screen! guess apple and sony are the only ones to figure that out.

    Dear MrMagee & KDaniel6217,

Recent statististics taken last week (2/12/09) show an identically split preference among users. It seems that the Samsung is a bit less grainy than the LG.
