I think its time to start a new thread:
Today pictures of most of the new "New Generation" ThinkPad were found (thanks to bloddy_nokia_adept!), the only ones really missing are T540 and W540. Here are the pictures:

Note that the L540 is the first Lenovo ThinkPad apart from the Edge-Series and the W7xx-Series with a built in numberpad! The chances are high that W540 and T540 also will get one.
Edit:
And T540p!

*sees clickpad on T440*
*dies*
Seriously, no hate but i'm not a fan of those minimalistic designs on thinkpads
They should have left those to the Ideapad line.
These laptops look like G400/Y400s with Thinkpad branding.
Sandy bridge thinkpads, i will miss you.
But i do like the new specs and improved battery life from Haswell, as well as the possible Iris Pro graphics. -
I'd really like to know what's under the hood of the T440p that makes it so much thicker than the T440. Lots of good stuff I hope
-
I think the T440p will be the W540. It used to be like that.
-
@indrek
Dun Dun Duuuuuuuuun -
Wow the T440p is straight up chunky; dual GPU? Ultra-fast PCI SSD? UHD display? AC wifi? I like...maybe. Can't wait for specs/unboxings/reviews to compare them...
...in the meantime, keep the leaks coming! -
I predict this:
- Up to 32GB RAM DDR3L
- I7 4700/4800/4900/4930, either MQ or HQ versions, MX for the 4930
- Nvidia K1000M/K2000M, possibly K3000M
- 900p/1080p screen, 95% gamut, maybe IPS
- AC wifi optional
- M.2 SSD optional
PCI SSD = M.2, already present in both the u3/430 an Y4/510p -
Ack... I wish Lenovo would incorporate the larger M.2 cards (80mm +) so there's the option of larger capacities, or at least have the space for double-sided 42mm cards if or when they appear. In addition I've read some rather worrying posts about some YXXXp machines having a different MoBo without an M.2 slot if the machine is not configured with Lenovo's cache drive.

-
i'm not feeling the look of these laptops, but as long as i can get an IPS screen, wireless AC, and possibly thunderbolt in one of them, i'll still take a thinkpad over anything else.
do you guys think there will be a X1 Carbon replacement during this launch too? -
Numpad?! Off-center keyboard/trackpoint/trackpad!!!
One reason I've been prefering T/W5x0 (over their HP and Dell counterparts) is the absence of numpad. -
Keep on dreaming. Only W540 might get some of those but no K3xxx GPU. 95% gamut is also available in 15" only. Also, high end Haswell quads run too hot, so if anyone is thinking they might be able to benefit from these cpu's - think again. Even the best cooled gaming laptops like Clevo's and AW's tend to overheat with those components.
-
Well, i see the K3000M being a possibility, especially considering the W530's already ginormous 180W power supply. It is the workstation equivalent of the GTX 770M, with a 75W TDP. I'm not guaranteeing it, but i'm saying it could happen. Either that, or Lenovo is waiting for Nvidia to release the K series successor to the Quadros.
As for the i7's, we never know, after all the Current W530 supports up to the Extreme Ivy bridges, so Haswells might be possible. I do think however that the 4702 will be CPU of choice due to it's lower power consumption and the fact that it is already included in a Similar laptop by Lenovo (Y510p).
But my predictions are predictions, doesn't mean they will happen. We will see what Lenovo/IBM has in store when those computers come out. -
Is IBM still hand-holding Lenovo?
-
With their recent design changes, things point towards "no"
-
Yes, after using a centered keyboard, it is a bit awkward using an non-centered one. I don't like these new 15" Thinkpads with off-centered keyboards. Also, the new look is more rugged than the old - not necessarily a good or a bad thing.
It seems like the changes are substantial - mainly externally and some internally. Of course, these are the new Thinkpads so we don't have any options - other than to go to the competition. -
^ Reason i don't buy 15 inchers anymore. And 1080p is not enough to make me switch back.

T440 > T540 -
wow great pics, where do you find these haha
t540 sure is a big laptop. i was hoping it could be thinner, is there going to be a t540s model?
i think t440 will be able to manage all my needs. here to hoping it can stay under 1.7k for quad core, FHD touch, K2000, 256 SSD, otherwise i'll just get the M3800 -
I doubt there till be a t540s. Also, i dont think you will find a touchsceen in the T series. W540 or T540p seems like your best bet.
-
really? i thought by now almost every "premium" laptop has an option for touch. isn't the T440s available in touch? what makes you think that t440 wont have it
given how thick the t540 looked in the picture i highly doubt that T540p can make it under 1.8 inches. the max i can accept is 1 inch thickness. a lot of laptops on the market can achieve this despite having a little cooling issues(although i do hope the performance doesn't get throttled a lot, a little is ok) then again, i'm more than ok with a 4700mq in the laptop, anything more powerful will be a waste to me. T540p and W540 seems like extremely serious workstation monsters, not what i'm looking for right now. -
You are underestimating the i7-4700MQ. My laptop is 1.25 inches thick and it gets pretty hot, and it packs one huge copper side exaust as well as a bottom full vent. Many slimmer Clevos that have this CPU, and so do HP envies, and they all get hot. Laptops needs pretty good cooling to handle the non 4702 CPU's, hence why i think they will only be put in the W540/T540p. Best thing your T440s will probably get is a top-of-the-line ULV. The T440 will have the 4702 as it's best chip, since it has the same TDP as a non ULV i5. The W540/T540p will have the 4700/4800/4900 + extreme Haswells.
-
Is there a way to accuratly measure the thickness of those machines in the pictures. By using known dimensions? (screen size, USB post size, clipad size, key size...?)
-
As a Thinkpad X201 (and X201T) owner, I want to buy an X240 to replace my X201, but if Lenovo can't manage to get at least a 1600x900 screen on it, I will move on to Samsung, Sony, or even (gulp) Apple (Boot Camp).
I'll happily take a screen too pixel dense and run it at less than native resolution (or use PPI adjusting) over having to run 1366x768 (actually 1280x800 for me) anymore. Honestly, IDGAF if it's a $500 upgrade to get a decent panel. I'll pre-order it if I am given an option to have some more screen real estate. I have great eyes (20/7 according to a Snellen Chart).
Some basic pixel counting will do it, assuming the dimensions can be gotten. -
I'm personally on edge of either ordering an X230 now or wait for the X240. The fact that the X240S is gimped with single channel memory that maxes out at 8gb worries me that they have taken a stance that caters to form factor and battery life over performance. I'll give it to IDF to see if they will announce the X240 specs.
-
T440/T440p should have the exact same footprint of the T440s (13" chassis size, 14" display), X240, should be the same size as the X240s, but all of them thicker than their s-counterparts.
-
In the past lenovo never used the 35W quadcores in their T/W series because those CPUs dont offer V-pro. So i would not be so quick in saying the T440/P "Will' have the 4702 chip.
Although i sincerely hope it happens. But as it stands, i have doubts even the T440p will have a quadcore. Unless they break with traditional and offer a Non V-pro 37w quadcore. It is going to be really difficult for these 14inch laptops to have 47w chips in them without dual cooling fans. The huge Alienware 14 still has heat problems.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Alienware-14-Notebook.97648.0.html
CPU turbo disengages under full load. I think this proves a single fan solution in a 14inch notebook will simply not work with 47W chips. If that thick ugly POS with a mesh case bottom cant cool it then there is no chance lenovo can manage it in a relatively slim T440p -
Don't forget that T/W Thinkpads are somehow better in terms of cooling than most of the laptops - look at W530 with i7-****XM processor (that has single fan) that can easly run as cool as 2 or 3-fanned gaming laptops.
-
Any ETA on these, or is it a painful wait until end of year?
-
@Macpod
You seem to be ignoring that the current W530 houses the 55W i7-3920XM. Pretty sure it will handle the 4900MQ, which is a 47W chip. The i7-4930MX is a 57W chip, so that's not too far of a stretch.
But look, Lenovo crammed their 47W CPU into the 14' Y410p (which, by looking at the pictures, is no thicker than the T440), i wouldn't be surprised if they did it in the T440p/W540.
Bottom line: we won't know until Lenovo releases the laptops. However, i find it unlikely that Lenovo will release Workstation laptops without Quad-Core, that's just preposterous and it would be a downgrade from the W510! -
People. Im talking about 14inch laptops not 15 inch. I know W530 can cool a quadcore well. look at the size of the heatsink compared to the T430

Bloody Nokia Adept Notebook Consultant
Yeah... I was writing this rumor a month ago... http://forum.notebookreview.com/len...-website-ips-screen-1080p-36.html#post9317929
Interesting photo... What power brick is pictured there? 135w? -
Looks like a 90W.
Source: I own a Lenovo 130W adapter and it's bigger than that.
Unless my eyes are deceiving me. -
That looks to have a very similar footprint to the current W540 and the power brick does look more like the 90W to me. I really like the addition of the keypad, however I don't like how they seem to have removed the dedicated volume and mute keys. I really hope they don't go down the road of using fn keys all over the place.
I am also a little worried about what they are going to do for speakers on the W540. I hope they do something decent, even though I use my W530 for work, I still enjoy watching the odd movie on it or working on multi-media content without having to attach external speakers. If they introduce the Keypad, which it looks like they will, it don't leave much room for decent speakers. -
First specs of the W540: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/w-series/w540/?redir=y#techspecs
-
Is it just me, or is thunderbolt the firewire of the 2010's? Who uses it anyways.... The cables are sooo expensive...
Aside from that, i see no big difference over the W530. -
If anyone is worried about speakers (understandably, the W530 had horrible speakers), just keep in mind that the T440s offers excellent speakers, even more so for its size. So there's still a good chance Lenovo will treat us with something good in the W540.
-
Probably they get a discount from Intel when they include thunderbolt, so it's a bit pointless but doesn't hurt. What I find strange is only 2xUSB3 and at the same time 2xUSB2? That doesn't sound right for a high-end workstation in 2013 (it's what we had on 2010 W510 machines).
I still wish they'd offer a no-numpad central keyboard as an option. That should really be possibe with only a tiny engineering effort. -
Well, not all usb ports involve data transfers, example: usb mouse/keyboard/headset/digitizer/webcam
-
any new info about t440 ?
-
The web page for the W540 states:
THE MOST MOBILE WORKSTATION EVER.
This portable 15.6" workstation is the thinnest and lightest in its class, yet sacrifices nothing in terms of speed, power, and durability.
This should mean that its at least thinner and lighter than the W530, which means that it will be perfect in size for me. The W520 I own is the perfect match of performance and cooling, beating every thin HP and dell computer I have ver own. -
It is in fact lighter (W540 with 6-cell 2.47kg vs. W530 with 6-cell 2.62kg) than the W530 and maybe also a bit thinner (the displaycover seems to be a bit slimmer). But I think this statement refers to the competition in form of the new 15" Dell Precision and the new 15" ZBook from HP.
-
Thinness + Performance don't mix well unless you want to run into heat issues
-
With dual fans and modern hardware (especially from Sandy Bridge onward) heat has become a significantly smaller issue. Fan design has been optimized over the years as well.
-
thinnest and lightest in its class? that's some big words. is lenovo considering dell M3800 in the same class?i think that one is being advertised as the thinnest and lightest workstation as well. i'm looking forward to seeing some stress tests and temp results
-
In it's class
Yea, the T440s will the the thinnest and lightest of all T series thinkpads!
-
Exactly! In a class of its own!
It's the new advertising paradigm... endless bragging rights when you arbitrarily eliminate all competitors from the "class" -
