Thank you, I found exactly what I needed.

Nothing for the American version either. I'm about to call, so we'll see if it's any different over the phone.

Looking forward to hearing what phone support says. I changed my country from United States to Netherlands on their site, and sure enough there's NFC options in the Fingerprint Reader section. Hmm.

Maybe it's an FCC-related issue -- does Lenovo need FCC clearance for its NFC implementation?

I see on device manager both Nvidia graphics and Inteld dh4600. Is there way to choose between the 2? Like use the 4600 only when I'm not gaming?

Well, mine is in. Can't seem to get the NFC to work, Hibernation doesn't hibernate, touchpad is unusable in Linux (Debian). But that's all software related I'm guessing. Any ideas?

A little back-light bleed because of the bezel, but not enough to call and let them molest my laptop. Not sure if I'm going to keep it. It all depends on those promised extra 5% and how it performs in the coming week. Had one strange moment when it refused to turn on. Only when I connected the AC I got it running again. Again, not really sure what I should think.

Alright, what a night! I'll just copy my story from the Youtube video: Lenovo T440p second coming... - YouTube

Do yourself a favor, if you are a demanding user like me, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM LENOVO! Received my second (!) Lenovo Thinkpad T440p after shipping the first one back because it was also a piece of sh- laptop. Was hoping this would be my new machine at last. Nope said the T440p.

After a whole night of installing a dual boot setup and fine-tuning Windows 7 and Kali Linux, it told me to go f- myself. Got a BSOD before it happened, but did not get a chance to check it out in the event viewer, because it would not let me. Got the machine going again after switching the RAM-strips, but it hung itself right after booting into Windows 7. My guess it has something to do with the Intel chipset/controller, but I'm not willing to look for a solution. It's going straight back to China.

I've had it with this Thinkpad stinkpad sh--, I'm never ever thinking about Lenovo rubbish again. Go f- yourself T440p!

I'm sorry for not filming this in 1080p, but my phone was also laughing in my face and recorded in 480p. I'm not unpacking that piece of crap machine again. Look closely and you'll see it blinking at me (and laughing it's off together with my phone).

Are you sure that you used the correct RAM for the T440p? (Background: You need 1.35 V RAM instead of 1.5 V)

They came with the machine (were already built in). If they're the wrong voltage then Lenovo has proven to be really retarded.

Then what are you doing with it? Using the stock HDD with Win8 single boot and avoiding all p-rno? I really need my dual/triple/quadruple boots. And it can't be coincidence anymore, their stuff just isn't built for heavy users.

Perhaps you are right and that it isn't a coincidence. So I will propose that you, Mr Elite Heavy User, are doing something wrong. You clearly have a lack of patience with the system and are not willing to look for solutions.

But what would I know, since I must clearly not be an Elite Heavy User.

Have you tried your multi-boot setup on another Haswell machine from another manufacturer? If you think it's the chipset/controller causing your problem then perhaps it's an Intel issue and nothing to do with Lenovo.

You think I'm enjoying this? No need to get all personal. I've been waiting since November for a usable notebook, if it was just a little bit less sh-t, I would've been a happy camper. The thing even had a reasonably big scratch on the lid, and I didn't even mention it. But this paperweight just isn't worth 1500 EURO'S (almost 2100 dollars!). And I wish I didn't know what I was doing, just so for once I could be happy with hardware in stead of constantly looking for ways to give the hardware a good beating. I'm very sorry, but snowball chance in hell I'm going to give Lenovo a third shot, in my book it's a big pile of C.

I don't really know what it was, the controller was just a fantasy I had this afternoon. It really malfunctioned in a pretty broken-hardware kind of way. It was a different problem then what I had with the first T440p I received. I could try later to look up the log.txt (if there is any) on the SSD I took out of the machine (by hanging it on my workstation through USB), but for today I'm done with it.

Lex, maybe you should try another notebook. No need to get very worried or stressed about it. Maybe they will have what you're looking for. There are options out there.

    Oh I'm stressed!

I'm all out of ideas. I guess I'll have to wait until the 4700MQ is a little more mainstream. The only thing left is one of those 13" Clevo based things, but they only last 3 minutes on a charge and they sound like the Joint Strike Fighter and are as hot as the afterburner. I don't know...

All out of ideas? What does that mean? It's a laptop. There are choices out there. Give them a chance. You said, "The only thing left is one of those 13" Clevo based ..."

That is bizarre. Why would that be the only option left? I apparently have not followed this thread much.

Sorry I left that without explanation. But I really need a compact (maximum 14") and really strong processing (full-voltage!) CPU. The only models sporting an i7 4#00MQ, 16GB RAM and small IPS screen are the Clevo and Lenovo. I'm really picky, I know, but if it doesn't have those ingredients, I'm not willing to lay down a big wad of cash. I have enough notebooks lying around, but I wanted to combine al those laptops into one. So it's a real first world problem.

The HP Zbook 14 is an option and so is the Dell Precision M3800. The M3800 is a 15.6", though it weighs around 4 lbs.

Again I'm going to be a cry-baby, absolutely no HP, and 14" is really the maximum (stretching max...).

I know, every time I post I come up with other excuses and crappy excuses, but if those demands aren't met, I'm better off sitting on my money.

quad-core 14" laptops seem to be few and far between (and can be expensive... like the Razer Blade). The only ones that spring to mind are gaming rigs like the Razer Blade, Lenovo's Y410p, and the MSI GE40.

Looks good on paper, but how is it really performing? Heat, build, battery? Only problem is that it's not sold in The Netherlands. Perhaps importable from the UK (Germany has really drunk keyboard layouts), going to do some research on that one. I bought a 2.5" Crucial M500 960GB SSD for the T440p, so I need that extra 2.5" slot. That means the old style, smaller battery for me.

I'm looking at the MSI GE40 (about 1000 euro's), people talk about a problem with heat (seems to be a standard problem on the smaller notebooks though). And why do those gaming rigs have to be so g-dd-mn ugly? Lenovo obviously a no go, it's going to take a few years to get over that trauma.

So P34G, GE40, Razer Blade, that Clevo based thing...

Even if someone put a gun to my head I would not be able to decide. After the Lenovo escapade I think I'm only buying one when I get to try it for two days. If it can't handle my beating in one go, it's exit. That was the only big advantage with Lenovo, they don't ask questions when returning it (but that was more or less a Digital River feature, because Lenovo doesn't run it's own webshop).

Based on my experience with the MSI Wind U100 (rock solid little f-er, can't seem to break mine, in fact it's my second most used mobile keyboard), I'd go with the MSI, if it only had a backlit keyboard...

-edit- The Clevo based machine I'm considering is a W230ST by BTO ( www.bto.eu). Maybe I'm just going to give them a shot and if it's not what I expected, I'll just send it back so I can get some sleep.

-edit2- Because I never want to see anything Lenovo in my home again, I need to get rid of two T440p silicone keyboard covers and one Ultrabay HDD caddy (ebay version). Any takers? You only have to pay for the shipping costs (from The Netherlands), so I'm basically giving it away for free. See it as a thank you for accompanying me on this bumpy ride.

What are your actual temps; this is probably normal. If your environmental conditions are just right, and you're hovering on the border of the trigger point for the stock profile, I can definitely see it doing this.

    Dear Lex_Michdenotebook,
I would quite like your "T440p silicone keyboard covers" please! - I am pretty sure they'll fit my T440s.
I am in Amsterdam from 1-8 April. Any chance you could mail them to my friend I am staying with. I can pay the costs via PayPal.
    Thanks,

Hi guys. I have been checking this thread for months now and regardless of the issues that some people are facing i still think this is the right laptop for me. The only issue I'm having now is that I can only get this laptop with 1366x768 resolution. There is only one dealer for Lenovo here in my country (Qatar) so I don't really have many choices. Just how bad is 1366x768 resolution on this laptop?

Every HP I got my hands on was a real mess. I just don't like them. A lot of driver issues when transferring from XP to Win7 for instance.

They're yours. Put the address in a direct message, then we'll get it sorted out.

Hi, guys. Just returned my Dell XPS 9530 because of coil whine, looking for a replacement machine because my old one is dying out.

T440p seems to fit my requirements. I am just not sure about a few things:

    1. Both notebookcheck.net and some users have reported strange and annoying fan noise even once it's turned. I wonder it's just the problem of a few defect machines and can be easily fixed with a warranty replacement or a widespread design flaw like the coil whine on XPS 9530?

    2. It seems the battery is sticking out and look quite ugly. Is it just the 9-cell battery or 6-cell as well?

    3. I plan to use a large HDD combined with SSD. Which would be a more appropriate choice, considering money and effort, 1TB HDD then put it to DVD bay and insert an after-market SSD in the hard drive position or 256GB SSD and an after-market HDD to put at DVD bay?

    Thanks in advance.

Fan seems to be a problem for early models only.

6-cell battery does not stick out, only 9-cell.

Given the incredibly low prices of SSDs I ditched the platters altogether. A 1Tb Samsung Evo is $459 on Newegg.

    Thanks for your reply.

I'm very pleasant to hear that fan and batter are not going to be problems.

Regarding storage, I guess you chose the most cost-efficient one of 500GB HDD? The reason why I still want to keep an HDD is because I use BT a lot. I just figured out that I can just purchase an msata SSD to reduce extra effort.

Well the T440P isn't mSATA, it is a 42mm M2. Largest size you can currently get is 128Gb I think.

I asked myself what makes more sense from overall usability, longevity and performance. IMHO 128Gb isn't really big enough for a main drive plus all programs. So I considered a 256Gb SSD in the primary spot, with a HDD in the Ultrabay. But having two 2.5" drives seems silly, and you lose the DVD drive. Simple solution for me was to spend a bit more and just get a 1Tb drive. I only lose a small bit of capacity compared with 128Gb+1Tb, better performance and reliability than two separate drives (one of which is mechanical), lower power usage than two drives, and I still keep DVD which I find useful.

If I need more space later, I still have the option of adding a 1Tb HDD for a whopping 2Tb of total storage space.

So yes, I bought a 500Gb HDD model, switched it out for the 1Tb EVO, clean install on the new drive.

I've just discovered that if turn on bluetooth and connect to a phone, that meanwhile the wifi connection goes off. When I turn bluetooth off, wifi is still down. Connections are available, but when I attempt to connect, Windows tells me that my adapter isn't the right kind. I have to restart to get wifi back.

    I'm using the 16.6 drivers.

Edit: Oh, yeah. It's the AC part.

    Anyone else having this issue?

The 17.0 drivers have just been released, try those.

Also make sure any power saving settings are disabled for both components.

Yeah, I saw those. I thought I'd wait and check the web to see what they actually do. Intel is maddening in that they don't provide release notes.

I loaded 16.8 last month and found that wifi didn't wake up worth a damn after sleep/hibernation, so I rolled back. With 16.6, performance is good, except now for the bluetooth thing. But I hardly ever turn that on, so I could live with it like this.

When Lenovo adds the 17 driver they'll have some description of what they fix, so unless I can find some other feedback, I'll wait. I don't like to update anything that either doesn't fix anything, or that is an unknown. Most of Lenovo's apps don't really add anything other than to support more products. I'm a big proponent of leaving updating alone. In this case, I'm looking for a fix but am hard-pressed to find any feedback.

    Hi everybody,
I've just ran into a very severe problem with my t440p and would like to know if anybody else has had it happen too.

Machine info: nothing has been changed/upgraded since I got it 3 months ago (same win, bios, hardware).

Everything has been peachy so far. Suddenly the laptop would not start, no lights, no charging, nothing. Then it did start. Then not again.
Then I discovered it is not charging the battery anymore. Then it worked with the battery on, and sometimes when it was removed.

So far, I can conclude that the issue is with the internal charging system and power system components - because sometimes it will start, sometimes not, and seems like it doesn't want to recharge the battery anymore. The charger is fine, because I can get the laptop running without the battery (most of the times so far). The battery is also most likely fine.So it leaves the internal power system components to blame.

Has anybody run into this sort of problem? The first signs is when your laptop does not turn on even once in a blue moon, no green light on the power button, and then it suddenly might turn on, and keep working fine for some time, until next unlucky cold bood.I saw the first occasion, when it did not turn on immediately after power button push, probably months ago, but that was just once and I forgot about it.

    Regards

I had similar strange stuff happening with the second T440p Lenovo sent me after sending the first one back for being a piece of sh-.

Happened after the first day of using it, so I sent it back and told them they could keep it. So unfortunately I can't help you with the problem, I only can confirm I had the same strange things happening. I hope it still is useful to know.
