I also had a problem that it started blinking at me, but didn't turn on anymore. Does yours still blink or is it completely comatose?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19FDVYhTb-s

I had lots of strange things going on with the two T440p's I got from Lenovo. I understand your frustration, especially if you can't get a full refund anymore. Good luck with your journey!

    Hi Lex
When the problem initially occurred, zero lights went on when trying to power the laptop on (comatosed), with or without the charger.
Then it started, after 10minutes of trying. Then again didn't.Then it started with the battery connected, then again didn't (with charger only or with both charger+battery).Bit later, when got it running - I noticed it's not charging the battery anymore.I've managed to get in running without a hiccup for the last couple of days, but not charging, using it without battery now.So the powering-on problem sort of disappeared mysteriously, but for how long..

Lenovo's box is on its way.

Hi this is my first time posting on this site. I'm thinking of ordering a T440p and I had a couple questions it seems like folks here can probably answer.

Is it possible to completely remove the DVD drive from the system? I'd like to remove it if possible, so I don't want to bother with the $20 DVD-RW option. But if I'm forced to have a drive in it, then it might as well be a writer too so I'm trying to make sure I can ditch it. My plan would be run with just one SSD in the system and no other drives. If I do remove it, is there some way to cover the hole would leave in the body?

Finally, I'm not exactly sure what the "ultrabay" is, I guess it's a place to add accessories? Is it the same bay the DVD drive is located or is it in addition to it? Is it mainly for adding additional hard drives or can you get other accessories?

    Thanks,

    Evan

I don't know if you can get it without the DVD drive, and I suspect it would feel a bit too flexible above that point without one in. The ultrabay is where the DVD drive is located, and can also be swapped for another hard drive, and in older models often an extra battery.

Now that I'm about to get my hands on my T440p for the first time, I've got a couple of questions regarding Windows 7 installation.
Is it really true that I cannot find out what my Windows license key is without installing some third party software?
If so, I was thinking of doing various levels of backups onto the HDD, then putting in my SSD (HDD will be going in the ultrabay) and transferring the files from my HDD to SSD.
I won't have access to my desktop or any other computer of use that I could use to put stuff onto the SSD.
One last thing, are there any recommendations for what Lenovo specfic drivers/software to install or avoid?

Mine has Windows 7 and I have a CoA with a key under the battery. I got lazy and just ended up cloning the factory installation to my SSD.

Ultrabay is where DVD drive locates. You can replace it with a 2nd hard drive (have to get an adapter) or battery.

My screen is having trouble producing dark colors correctly. When the screen is showing dark colors there will be two rather large purple dots on my screen instead of the colors that should be shown where the dots are. Is this a driver issue or should I should I send my t440p in for maintenance?

Are these single pixels or bigger areas? It sounds like a hardware issue, but then did you always have it or did it develop over time? Take a picture?

I've finally managed to get my hand on my T440p for the first time! However, one quick question. The HDD has a sort of silver foil over the PCB, does it matter if this gets pressed against the PCB when installed in the ultrabay adapter?
Another question, are there no NFC drivers for Windows 7? I can only find ones for Windows 8.

No battery support for the new UltraBay. It only supports an optical drive or hard drive.

Hi, I've had my t440p for a month now, used it for one week with original HDD and installation but have since upgraded it with samsung evo and clean windows 7 install. Pretty happy with the machine, great keyboard, good screen, love the trackpoint(first thinkpad) usable trackpad(for mousepresses), but guess the old design was better, great performance. Hopeless bezel around the screen and keyboard, come with small bulp in monitor bezel and I get lightbleed very visable with black background because of this. I aslo got a bulp over the rightmost hinge. Except from this tha it is a good performing machine, and I handle my multitasking well. If i get rid of my current issue I will be happy with the purchase:

BUT: I'm now troubled multiple crashes everyday:

I havent talked with Lenovo support yet, but wanted to know if anyone have had similar issue as me. The machine crashes after being in sleep mode for 20min+/hibernation. I've read about other having problems with crashes after sleep, but I'm unsure about if its the same symptoms, and I haven't get rid of mine using their suggestions. Most of the time the computer crashes with this screen:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGUyPeRnzPE&feature=youtu.be

A few times I'm just stuck with a black screen similar to what other have reported:
Lenovo t440p hangs after sleep + lightbleed - YouTube
Here I also demonstrate the lightbleed, which is worse in the video than in real life. It is very apperant with black background, but no problem at all when working (web, programming, documents etc)

At some rare occations the first crash-sceen have also occured while using the computer. And two times I've got a BSOD. It is docked in the video but the crashes occurs regardless of it is docked or not.
If someone have had the same issue and solved it, please give me a headsup! The machine worked without problems for one week, and the crashes may be related to when I started using simcard with the Ericson WAN module, I have check that out closer.

    Spec/history:
    - Clean install of Windows 7N Professional, (Dreamspark/MSDN licence, computer came with Win8/7downgrade)
    - Replaced HDD with 1TB Samsung EVO 840 SSD
    - Default BIOS except enabling VTx, tried disabling fingerprint reader.
    - Fingerprint reader, no nvidia, i7-4700mq, 16GB, Ericsson N5322 WAN,
    - Using simcard in ericsson reader.
    - First installed with drivers from old installation.
    - Last weekend upgraded with:
    - New bios firmware, new firmware for the EVO SSD. Latest drivers from lenovo, (I think i upgraded them all, but have to verify that. Still one undetected device in device manager, how should the fingerprint reader be listed?

Any hint in what direction I should look to solve this issue would be very much appreciated

EDIT: Disabling Intel Rapid Start and uninstaling Intel Smart Connect solved this issue for me.

Thanks, yeah I've read up and down on that thread and similar and its a bit difficult to figure out what actually works and not/have the time to test everything. I will run the lenovo update software now, in case I've missed some drivers. If that does not help I will try the computer without simcard for some days. Thanks for you help.

The PCI devices need the Intel AMT drivers... one of the unknowns is probably the Power Management driver. Not totally sure what the last one is; what are the hardware ids on the two unknowns?

I already installed the PM driver.
Which intel amt drivers exactly? I don't want to install bunch of things because my computers is already fast, and i know it slows down when i start installing all these 'recommended' drivers on lenovo support.

    Hi again,

I'm trying several things now, but doing one change at the time and writing a log along to keep track of what actually makes a difference and not.

I'm now at the stage of trying your suggestion, and just wondered how I should do "disable" them properly:

What I've done until now regarding your recommandation is:
    - Disabled "intel rapid start" in BIOS
    --> Did not help isolated
    - Configured Intel Smart Connect software, and disabled everything inside it
    --> Did not help

Now I uninstalled the Intel Smart Connect software from windows. Should this be enough? I've read about other computers having a BIOS setting for disabling this also. Notice that I've run Samsung Magician and it did some OS optimalization ("Best relability").

EDIT: Disabling Rapid start and uninstalling Intel Smart Connect solved my issue.

Google is your friend. First one seems to be the fingerprint reader. Second one is the Intel CPPC driver; you absolutely should install this.

If that is the problem, then that should be enough. It caused havok on my system, similar to the symptoms you described.

    I've just bought the new t440p (20AN0037RT).
    I've changed HDD to SSD.
All last updates for BIOS, drivers and Windows installed.
I've noticed annoing coil whine noise from the top left side of laptop (and this is not a fan noise of course).
It's appears on Windows 8.1 (more when there are some bright windows on screen and less when there are only dark background). Also it's reduces while any program has screen activity or simple moving cursor.

    In BIOS it's not audible.
I've also boot from life Ubuntu usb-flash and there are also nothing like this.

Where can be the problem? Can anyone, who using Win8 on t440p check this?

I have onsite 24hr warranty with accidental coverage. Yet my machine was sent away in January. I have just got back a new machine 2 and half months later :(.

    - The screen still has some light bleed (FHD) but I am going to live with it because they replaced it 3 times and it only got worse.
    - the keyboard has keys that make a clunk noise when pressed. I have ordered a new replacement.

This machine is silent until the fan kicks in. When it does it is not quiet but compared to before it feels quiet. I hear air blowing melodically and a faint wine of the fan that is not too bad.

I feel lenovo have really dropped their standards. I was really tempted to return it and get my money back but there is no machine available to replace it (a light quad core laptop, thats fairly quiet and runs cool). I am no longer an advocate of Thinkpads.

    Hello,

I received my T440p a few days ago and I am really happy with this laptop. Coming from a Sony Vaio S I was looking for the smallest Quad Core I could find (I use it to manage huge datas in ram)

What I think so far :

    Pros :
    - I took the I7 4800MQ and it is FAST. With 16gb of Ram and 512mb SSD Its perfect.
    - The 1080 screen is pretty good, much better than all I had before on a laptop.
    - It is very silent even under load. Much quieter than my previous Sony S (I7 dual core but it was a small 13")
    - Lenovo driver update utility is cool as it finds and updates the drivers easely
    - Thanks also for the provided start menu under windows 8.
    - Not so many bloatwares. Just some so so apps esealy removed.

    Cons:
    - The case is a bit heavy and tall. They could have removed that useless DVD Drive to gain some space and weight.
    - I did not see that the backlit keyboard was an option, so I have a simple keyboard. (Hell I did not scroll down the list to discover that !!!)

All in all a very good comuter for anyone who needs a quadcore laptop.

Rapid start was causing BIOS problems, when it was looking for a pseudo-hibernation file on the disk that did not exist, but I don't think that was your (or my) problem.

In my case, Smart Connect was causing shenanigans with my USB HDD attached to the dock. Every time the computer went to sleep, the HDD would spaz out spinning up and down, then crash on resume. Not sure the exact issue, but I don't think Smart Connect is ready for prime time.

In any case, glad you got it fixed.

I'm getting frequent wifi disconnects, mostly "limited connection". This occurred after I upgraded the driver (2x2 Thinkpad wan) and to win 8 update 1. I want to try to install the older driver but it's not there on the lenovo's website.
    Any one experiencing the same?

Pro tip: Lenovo's update does not make restore points. If you're going to update from them, manually create a restore point so you can undo the changes to drivers. If you have an existing restore point, use it to go back. Or try Device Manager/Roll Back Driver.

Pro tip 2: Don't update anything unless you're fixing a known problem and the release notes for the update specifically address it.

Does anyone know the recommended version of the wireless drivers to the Intel 8260? I just used the Lenovo System Update program to update and now I'm having intermittent wireless problems.

What is the optimal version to use?

What sort of problems are you having? A lot of people seem to swear by the drivers directly from Intel rather than Lenovo, but I've never had any problem with Lenovo's version for the 7260 card and just update whenever system update suggests. I do, however, make sure I tweak all the relevant power settings for the WiFi card to prevent the constant cutouts than can otherwise occur.

Could you be more specific on the settings you use? I'm not really a Windows guy.

The only problem I'm having is intermittent connection issues. I'm connected to my router, but every 10-20 minutes I just can't resolve anything; ipconfig /renew fixes the problem right away, or I have to wait it out for a few minutes. Could changing the power settings solve this problem?

Use System Restore to revert to a state prior to the update. Lenovo Update does not create restore points. You'll have to use a pre-existing one.

Afterwards, don't use update unless you're fixing a known problem. Most updates don't really improve anything; they add support for new hardware generally. Read the release notes before you click "go".

I've had my t440p for 4 months now, and its in pretty sad shape.

Along with the grinding fan it shipped with, the screen now cuts out when pressure is applied to the back of the display. This behavior appeared about a week ago and has slowly progressed. The laptop has not been abused and is still in good cosmetic shape.

Going without a laptop is a PITA but I'm pretty much at the point where I need to send it in. Maybe I can get an auo panel at the same time.

My t410s lasted for three years and through multiple waist high drops onto tile and concrete. My T440p can't even survive being opened and closed. On the plus side, I have become quite adept at the new trackpoint.

I've Recently got a t440p (20AN004RAD: 4700QM, 1TB SATA, 8gb) and i wanted to see what are my options for SSD without removing HDD and ODD. (i didn't configure it myself) and i want to boot my OS (8.1) from SSD
i don't know whether i have an empty mSATA slot or not, same about m.2.
what i do know is that there's a smart card reader on the right which has something to do with m.2 slots i presume.
    so basically:
    1. what are my options? (keeping in mind the bootablity!)
    2. is there any kind of SSD that goes through the smart card reader?

Your experience does not surprise me.

As soon as I got my T440p I had the grinding fan replaced and the LG display replaced with an AUO panel because of excessive light bleed. I had this done onsite and hung out with the tech while he took the lid apart. All I have to say is that the lid is a flexy, thin PoS with no visible stiffening or reinforcement. It shattered my faith in the Thinkpad T-series build and made my T420 look like a tank by comparison.

Unsurprisingly, my AUO panel that had zero light bleed after installation is now showing signs of bleed, no doubt because the lid offers zero protection to the panel frame. The rest of the machine is fairly stiff (albeit cheaply made with sharp seams all around), but the lid is IMO a joke.

The T420 has a very simliar lid design, with no more stiffening or protection apart from the Carbon-Fiber/Glass-Fiber back. The only difference between those two is, the T420 had a thicker panel, and flexes maybe a bit less (I don´t have a T440p, but I can compare T420 and T440s, the T440s display is definitely thinner).

Also, IPS panels are much more susceptible towards light-bleed than TN displays, so its natural that your T420 will have less light-bleed and the panels seems better protected - however, the light bleed may also be caused by a misalligned bezel.

Anyway, todays displays are much less vulnerable than older generation panels - they should not brake this easily, and some light flex should not hurt them at all. 691175002 display might be defect because of some other reason, I guess we will never know until more people start to see the same problem with their T440p´s.

The T440p lid is flexier that the T440s and far flexier than the T420. IPS vs TN panel light-bleed aside, the design of the lid on the T440p just plain sucks for a Thinkpad IMO. Glass-reinforced plastic it might be, but it ain't very stiff at all. The bezel is unlikely to be misaligned and it's thin-enough plastic that even if it was it would not exert much pressure on the panel frame. More likely is the flex of the lid to which the panel attaches is the issue. The panel itself is secured by four screws to the inside of the lid and the bezel clips on to the edge of the lid at a dozen or so spots (it's not stuck on like the T440s), so unless screw/clip tolerances are rubbish (which, granted, could be possible considering how badly this thing is put together) everything should be easy enough to line up.

Here is a quick phone video of the problem(s). The screen shuts off when any forward pressure is applied, and will even turn off under its own weight. You can also make out the spotlight effect from the LG screen and experience the horrifying grinding at fan speed 1.

It can be hard to judge how noisy a laptop is through a youtube video, but I consider most laptops inaudible at minimum fan speed. This one is extremely annoying.
The main reason why I haven't sent it in yet is that I can set tpfancontrol to leave the fan off until 70c so it almost never turns on.

I having thoughts that the problem of my internet disconnections is from win 8.1 update 1, not from the latest driver (Thinkpad wireless lan)?
