I am still interested in the quality of the LG screen: pjc123, you said there is a "Screen-Door" effect, which would mean that the pixels are very visible and the whites are very gray. Is this really the case? Or is this just the white shimmering others have reported?
Dreamwonder, has your LG screen really none of the effects discussed here? No "white spotlight", shimmering or screen-door effect?
-
-
-
Ah, ok, thank you. At least no more effect like the one the plagued the older T420(s)-T430(s) models....
The other effects you describe are likely weaknesses of the used AH-IPS technique. The shimmering is likely the famous "IPS shimmering / sparkle effect", which sometimes effects matte IPS screens like the LG screen. The other effect is maybe also a weakness of the IPS technique. The AUO screen uses the more advanced AHVA technology. No wonder the viewing angles are better on the AUO display.
However, what still irritates me: how could the screen dreamwonder has be better. Maybe he has a different LG display from the one used in the T440s... -
I received my T440s today and did a clean install to Windows 8.1 on an Intel SSD I bought around Black Friday. Does anyone know about installing the Dolby audio software that came stock? The speakers are lackluster without those enhancements.

OK, after cooling down a bit, I gave tech support a call. I really like the lightness and feel of this machine otherwise, so I am sending it in to have the screen replaced. They are shipping me out a box tomorrow so I can send it back to them. I asked the tech support person to check whether the AUO screen is in stock and he said they have plenty of them. I then asked him to verify the part number on the AUO screen and he came back with FRU: 04X0436, which matches what has previously been posted on this forum. He told me the turnaround will be about 7 days. I like the fact that it will be replaced in a shop, not on my kitchen table.

Hi docfire,
How do you get your t440s replaced and get the AUO screen?
Thanks. -
Interesting. I too gave them a call just now and the tech on the phone thought the LCD cable could be the problem LOL! Anyways, he offered to send me a box where I could send my machine in and they would take a look at it to see whats causing the issues I described. No firm commitment that the LCD would infact be replaced. When I gave him the AUO FRU and asked whether they have any in stock, he said that they have only 2 in stock. Different reps giving different answers.

In my possession right now, I have a Yoga 2 Pro, Thinkpad X230 (TN display) and the T440s (LG IPS display panel). Did anybody want any comparision shots or anything? If so, let me know.
-
Yes, sure. Comparison pictures are always welcome.
-
Interesting all the different answers people are getting about whether the AUO is in stock or not. I called today around 2pm (-5 UTC) and was told it was not in stock.

Just got mine today - 4300U, 12GB RAM, Samsung SSD. Some quick thoughts:
Installing the RAM/SSD was a pain, although prying off the back cover went more quickly than I expected (I wasted a lot of time on the screws before realizing they were held in by washers). The computer itself is very nice. I have a LG screen, but it seems fine, and I don't want to go through the hassle of replacing the screen. The build quality is excellent. The keyboard is a joy to type on, although it does pick up oils quite easily. I personally like the clickpad a lot, although I usually use a mouse and have never owned a Thinkpad with discrete buttons. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the T440s.iofthestorm likes this. -
@aritep: Can you maybe post some Pictures or a Video from your Display (viewing angle, wiping Screen, etc)? would be a great help for other LG-Screen users in seeing the difference -
I took the picture with my Sony NEX F3 camera with a completely white background. The brightness level is set to 100% on all three machines and no color calibrations have been made -- everything is stock factory settings. If required I can take more pictures with other colors or pictures etc. Please feel free to ask.

Just got mine a few hours ago - 4300U, 8gb, FHD non touch, 6 cell, 500gb hdd
Turned it on in a dark room expecting screen bleed etc, none to be seen whatsoever. Hopefully this doesn't develop over time.
Was expecting the LG screen, nope got the AUO (there is hope!). Ill see if i can post pictures later on.
Only issue so far is the bezel on the right hand side is kinda loose when compared to the right hand side, there is a small gap between bezel and edging. Not sure if i can fix this myself with clamps or glue, but its not too major
Also the touchpad is kinda jumpy but that can be fixed with drivers.
Looks promising so far. -

I've got the B140HAN01.2, which is an AUO screen -
Ordered about two weeks ago and being postponed. Are reading all those posts, I think I am going to cancel it. Really buying a laptop does not need to go through those hassle. Very dissapointed by Lenovo.
-
Considering the T440s but not really sure what I want. Anyone wanna suggest what options I should get?
Touchscreen or no touch?
4g ram or 8?
Which wireless option?
anything else i should know? was also looking at yoga 2 pro to save a few hundred dollars -

Im curious on how the t440s build compares to a t61... can one for instance pick up the laptop from the top of the screen without much worry?
-
You should never pick any Laptop at the screen, this is not recommended for any Notebook - but yes, it is possible to do this with the T440s.
-
flyingsilverfin Notebook Consultant
Sorry yes I meant from the top bezel. The clamshell design makes picking it up from there easy and grippy
I was looking on the US t440s customizations, how come there is only a 1 year warranty available? Last time I looked (must've been t420 or something) I could buy a 3 year warranty even -
-
Cheers! -
Got an update today about the AUO. Still not in stock:
"We are writing to let you know the replacement part we recently ordered on your behalf is currently delayed. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. Please know that we are doing everything possible to fill your order as quickly as possible. Typically, delayed orders fill within 5 to 7 business days."
Also getting spammed from Lenovo with emails asking me to take a survey. I ignored the first one and got a "reminder" spam today. I knew I should have used a disposable email. -
On a side note, I installed my 256 GB SSD today. Opening up the base was not exactly a pleasant process but it wasnt too bad. I followed the HMM to the dot and didnt have too much problems opening it up.
I also ditched the 3 year depot warranty and instead got the 2 year onsite+accidental coverage for $135+taxes. Once I get a chance (and they have the AUO screen in stock), I will log the screen issue and get somebody to replace it. -
Not sure this one was being asked before, anyway.. I received my T440s and the 90W Ultra Dock. One issue I have is when I hit PF7 to "Project to second screen" and go to my monitor only mode (using HDMI port 1), that seems to be fine. However, after I close the lid and come back to use the laptop again, I cannot go back to "second screen only" mode until I take out the laptop from the Dock, put it back. I cannot find any doc. to help me. Can someone help me?
-
-
Yea, they gave me that same 6 to 7 day turnaround time quote too, but when I pressed them on it they admitted it could take longer if the part weren't in stock. They also told me that it was 6-7 business days, so that's really more like 2 weeks actual time when you add in holidays and weekends.

Do you have any links to the ghosting reports? I am curious to read up on them. I didn't see any ghosting apparent on the AUO video link posted a few pages back, but the camera may not have been close enough to the display to notice in the video. I am not noticing any real ghosting issues on the LG display, but text is sometimes not perfectly clear at 100% windows font size. The moving spotlight effect/viewing angle is just horrible though, so I'll have to hope I don't get an AUO panel that suffers ghosting.
-
-
As I said before, there is ghosting on the AUO Display, but not very much. The panel is so good, I really don´t mind this minor issue.

A question about the clickpad, is there a way to config it to click on tap/touch or do you always have to click it all the way down?
-
I believe the default config registers a tap as a click. Mine works that way and I don't think I've changed it.

For anyone wondering how the integrated graphics fare with gaming, I tried d3 out and got single digit fps rates with everything set to max. Dropping everything to low settings and the resolution a few notches down from the native IPS 1920x1080, I got it into the 20s fps in town. I didn't try seeing what combat performance was like. This is integrated graphics so I wasn't expecting much, and was actually surprised the fps in d3 was high enough to be playable at all.

I Just got my T440s today and so far I am liking this machine and my screen looks pretty good. How do I check which screen I actually have though? I went into the BIOS and I cant find anything referencing the screen part number and i'm not too sure how to look it up in the registry.
-
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I got the 65W power adapter, and it generates a ridiculous amount of noise on the electrical ground when it is plugged in with no load (not plugged in to the laptop or plugged in with the power off on the laptop). This is a problem because when it is plugged in it causes a loud, annoying buzzing noise from my external speaker system. This occurs even when they are plugged into a different electrical outlets in my apartment.

can someone post the specs of the 4GB RAM soldered on the board? timings, frequency, and CL?
also, is 1200 euros inc VAT acceptable price for i5-4300U 1.9 GHz 14.0" FHD UMA 4GB 500GB + 16GB SSD WL BT CAM W8Pro ? (brand new, 3y warranty) -

It seems that the most of us have th LG Display build it in. Going to send it back to my vendor and getting it replaced with AUO one. Will Report you what is going to happen
-
May need to get my trackpad replaced unless i can fix it myself. A ~2cm wide column on the very left hand side does not register when depressed and has a very soft spongey feel compared to the rest of the trackpad. This makes use of the trackpoint near impossible as the left click is not registered a good percentage of the time.

For what it's worth, I had both the AUO and LG screens and my LG screen was better in my opinion. It's a little difficult to describe, but my AUO panel had sort of a vertical scanline effect when displaying certain solid primary colors. Like the screendoor effect, but only vertically. It only showed up in certain situations, but it drove me crazy. It also had a stuck pixel in the center of the screen. The LG does have some issues with viewing angles, but personally I find that to be a less significant issue than the ones I had with the AUO screen. Also, the LG seems to have less backlight bleed, though it wasn't a big issue for me on either screen. Someone also complained earlier about the LG's color temperature being cold, but it appears a little warm on mine.
That's just one man's experience, and yours might be different, but people should keep in mind that switching from LG to AUO is not guaranteed to be an upgrade.unferth33 likes this. -

Hi Guys,
Over in my country - Singapore, i'm only offered such a configuration:
Processor: i7-4600U
RAM: 8GB [4G Base + 4G (1 SODIMM)]
Storage: 256GB SSD 256GBSSDS3EDRIVE
Display: T440S_HD+_WW
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT730M 1GB
Wireless: INTEL_7260_BT
I heard that the upgrade to i7-4600U isn't really worth it on these ULV Processors. Ideally i would prefer to have it in i5. Also i would like to be able to configure it to FHD Display. I tried doing these on Lenovo United States website but it's not possible to achieve such a configuration with the NVIDIA Graphics.
Need advise here... If you were me, would you buy in Singapore and live with the HD+ display? Or purchase in the States with FHD at the expense of the NVIDIA Graphics?
