I have made a video of my viewing angles (AUO screen):
However, I think if you really are happy with the LG screen, I would not request a replacement.
-
-
-
Maybe the LG on your t431s is not the same as the one on t440s that some are complaining about ? The LG video from previous youtube vid seems much worse than yours.
-
Yeah this is odd. The screen on the right (LG) looks better.
-
I will have to call tomorrow or on Monday to see if I get the same reply about the AUO screen. I assume I have the LG also. -
My onsite tech opened the base unit for me so I could upgrade memory and Hard Drive.
Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that Lenovo wont send the Bezel Front cover sheet (The sticker frame on front of LCD) to a tech to replace. They want me to send it back to a Depot station to have it fixed in house (even though I have on-site warranty). My guess is that not enough techs know how to do this, so they wont ship them this part, and they want it done in their own shop. That said, Im now debating just returning this machine all-together and going with a pre-config Touch T440s after seeing the brightness and whites of the Touch screen on my dads T440s. It's a much better build quality, although a bit heavier and I could see myself using the touch on occasion, but still not that much. Thickness is negligible, but Im also worried about reflections as well. I will be making up my mind by tomorrow. -
I got it open. Now I am struggling to put the RAM in their. It does not seem to fit. Positive I have the right size. And I have put RAM into two Lenovo Laptops and a desktop so this is not new to me.
Is this Ram compatible?
It won't fit. It looks to big?

Although the specs look similar, it certainly is not the recommended memory for the T440s according to Crucial's Website......
Recommended Guaranteed Compatible 8MB Upgrade Memory
CT4927933
Other Compatible 8MB Memory
CT4927939
CT4927948
EDIT: I think I see what you did. Did you type in the correct memory part number in Amazon and it returned the wrong part. This happens all the time on Amazon, and you have to be careful that your search term indeed matches what is shown in the results. Another unrelated gotcha is in the reviews, as they often lump reviews for similar but completely different devices together. -
Hey guys,
since yesterday I have my new T440s with a LG Display. Viewing angles are good and all in all I think that this Ultrabook is awesome.
There is just one Thing about which I am afraid of. My Display is showing a yellow tint, especially on the left side of the display. You won't be able to see or recognize this tint in daily use. But if you are working with two word documents - side by side - then you can recognize this difference. I tried to explain it with this jpeg.
Maybe some of you guys with LG or AUO Display can do this test as well and give us a short Report. Thank you.
Greetings

I did not find that part number but everything else matches. Just like if I chose to get Kingston (rated the same or higher than Crucial) it should still fit physically right? Remember my problem is not with the RAM not working. My 204 pin RAM is not fitting physically so I can't even determine if it is truly not working. It is 204 pin like all others but does not fit. I have replaced RAM before so I believe I know how do it. I'd rather not purchase another RAM stick, reopen the base cover, and still turns out that I am somehow just doing it wrong. (Also Amazon is cheaper and has a better return policy, which apparently I may have to use). So my question was could I somehow be putting it wrong or are not all 204 pin notebooks ram modules made the same?

Here's a video I just made to show the viewing angles of the LG screen. I think it shows the spotlight effect really clearly, in spite of my mediocre camera. Excuse the messy desk. I used a white background (i.e. this forum) since I think that shows the effect most clearly - some of these other videos have a much less clear black or dark background:
T440S FHD LG Screen Viewing Angles - YouTube -
That looks bad, the 2 LGs and 1 Auo I experienced will have light shift, but very minor and is even across the entire screen.
-
Yep, that's exactly how my LG screen behaves. Called them yesterday to set up a replacement, and gave the lenovo part number for the AUO screen.
-
What's the AUO part number?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk -
According to this post, part number is 04X0436
-
I was planning on getting the 4gb version of that. Nothing about it seems like it wouldn't fit. Is it too wide or some other dimension?
-
Are you doing an on-site repair? Has anyone with depot repair called about replacing the screen? I also imagine they're still pretty backed up at this point on orders anyway - I might wait till after an upcoming deadline to send mine in.
-
I unfortunately don't have the on site warranty, so my options were them sending me the screen to replace it myself, my sending the laptop back to the depot for them to do the replacement, or going to an authorized warranty location and asking them if they can arrange the repair. I am going to call the authorized location tomorrow to see if they can get the AUO screen and perform the replacement if I drive over there. I don't want to have to send it back and be without it for two weeks (or even longer if the AUO is backordered). They are sending the empty box to me so if I do change my mind I can send it in anyway.

@DocFire,
could you please stop reposting the same post? This is really annoying! Your last post is just a replica of this one: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/734969-t440s-owner-s-thread-76.html#post9508111 -
So what would you suggest, ibmthink? Is this issue normal?
I can confirm the Spotlight, skander222. This is definitely annoying!
Actually i don't know why Lenovo is delivering their machines with two Panels which have great Quality differences! -
Well, if you find that annoying, then you better not go over to the Lenovo forums because you are going to come across a third post.
T440s - LG or AUO Display - Lenovo Community -
Yeah, I feel like it's a good marketing opportunity even - I'd be happy to pay a slight premium for the AUO (they could call it "super clear!" or something) if it meant not having to deal with the headache of getting it replaced. And for people who don't mind it, they could feel like they're getting a good deal by getting the cheaper LG.
-
Yes, i totally agree with you. I will try my luck and ask the vendor if he can replace my T440s with a new one. Hopefully he will agree because in the meanwhile I think that my LG Display might has a severe damage.
@pjc123: yes you are right. but unfortunately i haven't received any useful informations or feedback on this yet. -
Hi,
Have you guys experienced speaker noise?
See this thread: T440s speaker noise - Lenovo Community -
Actually I agree with you; from what I have read so far, it is not definitive whether one screen is better than the other. There needs to be a direct comparison using two T440s's with the same image on each screen.
-
Anybody here notice that the screen flickers randomly? At first I noticed it only when the laptop was unplugged, but now its happening even when the laptop is plugged in. Any way to stop it?
-
It is too "high or tall". More importantly I don't get it to sit in the slot. With Ram you have to 1)fit in and then snap down. But it does not fit. If it could go in more than it seems like it would fit. But it never snapped in and I felt resistance in putting in the RAM.. I know alot of people have put RAM and SSDs in their T440s I am surprised no else has posted or replied. That is why I want to make sure that somehow I am not doing it wrong.
-
When I installed mine it did seem to not fit at first, you probably just need to push harder. I think these smaller DIMMs are just tighter fits. I don't think mine appeared to "fit in" before I pushed it down, unlike my older laptop where the action was as you described.
-
That is what I was thinking. As I said in another post, it is one thing if RAM does not work. But to no physically fit is weird. So it must be me. It did not go into the slot all the way. But I have never had to push really hard. I did not want to damage the almost $80 RAM module that way I can't return it. Also did not want to damage the RAM slot on the Thinkpad. But I guess Lenovo would fix it under Accidental warranty.. But I am also not used to meeting resistance on the my two past thinkpads, and desktop. So much so, I question how much should one push to realize that it can't fit. I may try again. Hopefully someone else can comment on how much they had to push the RAM to get it in.
-
I tried it again and it was a breeze. All i need to do was a little pressure and it fit right in. I am embarrassed how I was freaking out. But I just needed confirmation from someone else. Thank you the RAM I bought fits and it is compatible. I have 12gb more than enough for 5 years of use.
-
I have a question for those more knowledgeable than myself about processing power and if the T440s would work for me. I need a computer mostly for e-mail & Excel/Word/Access -- but also for light web design using programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and InDesign. No 3d extensive work -- more or less I will be working on small business websites. Additionally, I do a little bit of work with ArcGIS, but again, no 3D intensive stuff.
The web design stuff is on the side, but I may be looking to expand it in the future. I'm not sure if just having a dual core i7 and 4400 HD graphics will come back to bite me in a couple years, as I would like to avoid having to buy a second computer.
I'd buy the 440p if it had a touch screen option, but unfortunately it does not. I've tried out some laptops with a touchscreen and I'm sold on it, as I find it makes scrolling long documents and web pages a bit easier and I read a lot. -
Hi,
my 2010 t440i can do all those. Just invest in at least 8GB memory and a fast SSD and your good for several more years unless you venture into intermediate 3D. -
I'm going on 5 days of ownership on my new T440s. I have noticed a intermittent buzzing sound coming from under the keyboard. It starts and stops, sometimes for a few seconds and it always stops. It sounds like maybe my 256 SSD is hanging up. Is this normal???
I haven't contacted Lenovo yet but wanted to hear from the forum.
Thanks. -
This is probably the best video. This shows exactly how my LG screen looks. Can people with the new AUO screens post a similar quality video?

Is your screen touch or not? How do I tell what screen I have (maker)? -
You can use for example AIDA64.
See: Viewing Angles AUO B140HAN01.2 AHVA - ThinkPad T440s FHD - YouTube There is no such effect on my AUO screen. -
I requested an AUO replacement for my T440p and was told they're backordered, so I'd be curious if you have any success getting one right away
-
Thank you. This clearly does not have the spotlight problem even though the video was shot in the dark. I will have to call in and see what's going on with the AUO display. Now if I could just get the dedicated trackpoint buttons back..............

I'm seeing a lot of posts here about AUO vs LG displays but it appears to only impact the Non-Touch screens. Can anyone confirm if there is also such a difference between the touch-version? I ordered mine a few weeks ago and it's finally shipping today, I'm just worried about getting a bad screen
.
-
Guys, I finally received my T440s about 10 minutes ago. Lenovo did not ship with my apartment number on the box (i had put up a sign for the UPS guy outside my building). Just a headsup for those who are expecting delivery of their machines and live in apartment buildings. I will follow-up with more info about my machine once I get a chance to play with it.
Edit 1: Just fired up regedit.exe and it seems I too have the LG panel (LP140WF1-SPK1). There is way too much 'shimmering' effect as one other poster described it previously. There is also a lot of spotlight effect when I compare it to the video posted earlier in this thread. -
I just called in for Lenovo to replace my warranty with the onsite next business day warranty. The customer service technician was AMAZING. Gave the part number, which as someone mentioned, is back ordered. They will let me know when the AUO screen is available and the come fix it.. No rush since the screen is not broken or anything. Hopefully I won't have call in for anymore service but nice to know it won't be a stressful thing to do for over the next 3 years.
-
I just received my T440s today. As others have mentioned, the LG screen has exactly the same issues as described in this forum. I verified that I have the LG model LP140WF1-SPK1 screen using HWiNFO64. The problems are very obvious on a white background. It is hard to explain the first issue. The image is what can best be explained as "sparkly", like looking through a lightly frosted glass window. I am also seeing the large oval white "blob", which is especially noticeable if you tilt the screen form forward to back; it appears like a reflection would, but after turning all the lights off, and in a completely dark room, it is still there. After viewing the screen for a while I start getting a headache. I would have preferred returning this machine as I could just get three or four throw away junk machines for the price of this laptop, but I am not willing to pay the 15% restocking fee. I called tech support and I am sending it back to have the screen replaced
As was also mentioned by some, the text is super tiny. I expected it to be small but it is a bit ridiculous and very hard to read. Decreasing the screen resolution helps, but leaves black borders around everything and you loose a lot of screen real estate, so that is no good. The browser resolution can be fixed OK, but the menus and other text are just way too tiny. I might try and change the system fonts in Windows, but unfortunately I have read that this blurs the text, so that may not be an option either.
Since it is immediately being shipped off, I don't have time to test for all the other problems reported on the forums. -
I found out today that the repair store they gave me is no longer in business. I had to call them back with this information. The AUO is indeed backordered and they have no idea when it will be back in stock. There are no other stores close to me, so my only options at this point are upgrading to next day on site service, or having them send me the replacement screen once it gets back in stock. Yes I could ship my T440s back to them but then I'll be without it for weeks since the AUO is not in stock. For now I am going to attempt to replace it myself whenever they get it in stock.
So far this whole experience has been quite unacceptable for what is supposed to be a business class machine. Debating whether to just get a refund at this point, but the alternatives seem to all be just as bad if not worse in terms of build quality, etc. -
I am not familiar with Lenovo's policy? Can I just ship this back tomorrow and get a refund?
-
From what I read on their site you can return it but it's subject to a 15% restocking fee. I don't know if it's possible to get a full refund in cases like this where it's their fault for using poor quality parts. In the past when I dealt with companies who hit me with unreasonable restocking fees, I simply called my credit card company to dispute it and was credited the full and proper amount.
-
For anyone who notice their speakers hissing or buzzing, go to recording devices and turn off all your microphone. It should stop the hissing. I didn't notice the hissing until I put my ears right next to the speakers. The problem is due to cheap unshielded wiring. It is so faint (for me) that I decided to leave my microphone one as it is inconvenient for me to turn it on every time I want to use Skype.
-
Thanks for the info. Yeah, you gotta love it. You send out units to the various review magazines with the wonderful AUO screen so it gets great reviews, then when you ship units to customers you thrown on an inferior screen.
-
Sheesh, so many issues apparently (noize, poor quality screen, etc). I'm glad I cancelled my order in time.
I'm disappointed with Lenovo, I may consider the w530 (ship date is ridiculous) but I'm leaning more towards mba/p.
I got a 8gb ram stick from crucial's website, anyone interested? -
and
Yes guys. Unfortunately you both are not the only ones with these problems. I am suffering as well and I have talked with my vendor. He is ready to send me a new one and he will try to build in the AUO screen. He said that it is no problem to replace the T440s with a new one. But I think this problem will last the same until there is no AUO instead of the LG Screen...
@Those who are thinking about buying: As you can find out in this thread: The T440s is an awesome machine. It is very well crafted and it feels very smooth. For me there is only one bigger problem and this deals with screen. So if there is a solution i.e. AUO Replacement with better Display-Results - I will love this ultrabook!
