Tried invert the scroll (both 1-finger and 2-finger scroll), all it does is inverting scroll :), but it doesn't change the three finger swipe forward and backwards behaviour, it's still reversed. There is no reverse direction for three finger gesture checkbox. It's probably a driver issue, and hopefully Lenovo will fix it on the next driver release.

Perhaps it is just an oversight on their part. If you want it to be included in a driver update, you have to find a way to communicate this desire to them or they will never get around to "fixing" it

Finally got the base cover off. Took about 15 minutes first time around, with a fine flat head and an old gift card. As you go around the base, starting from the battery as shown in the user manual, what worked for me was wedging the card in there and do a twist-like motion (not prying) to flex the bottom plate off of the frame. Flat heads are good for the corners.

Took about 3 hours for me to install everything from scratch on my Kingston SSD. And you don't need the newest BIOS. Just make sure you have Secure Boot disabled and the Legacy mode on.

Just received my X240 with FHD touch screen after sending back my T440s. Wow...what a huge difference between the screen quality. Little bit of light bleed from the lower left corner, but no spotlight effect like the T440s LG screen. So far quite happy with the hardware.

Got my T440s that I mistakenly bought from the lenovo outlet (clicked on the wrong product). Now I'm torn about returning it. I paid $1297 and it has the i7 chip, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Windows 7 Pro. The only down side is the display which is the non-HD. What do you guys think?

Holy crap, that's insanely cheap, especially with the massive SSD. Just buy a screen for $100 and put it in yourself.

Anyone know why my T440s doesn't recognize the removable battery when the computer is on?

I have to turn it off for windows to recognize both batteries.

I got my replacement AUO screen from Amazon via East Coast LCD's. Sorry to say but the LG really doesn't hold a candle to these panels. That was made abundantly clear yesterday when I still had the LG panel installed and a co-worker and I were seated next to one another - he on his T410s - which was not only brighter than the LG but seemed to have better viewing angles - and I HATED the screen on my T410s!

Got the AUO panel installed this morning and things are as they should be again...

There seem to be 2 versions of the 6-cell battery (47.5 Wh & 72 Wh).
I guess you are assuming you have the 47.5 Wh. Do you know you have this one for sure?
With the 72 Wh I think you would expect 49% using the external 3-cell vs the 6-cell?

Question to anyone. Why are there 2 versions of the 6-cell?

    Hey guys,

Just wanted to let everyone know that there seems to be a bug with the fn - ctrl swap.

When the computer resumes from deep sleep the fn+ctrl swap does not stay and it goes back to it's normal setting, it requires that I reboot to for the keys to go back to being swapped. I posted this on the lenovo forums and they have acknowledged the bug.

Just a heads up for everyone here.

There are multiple suppliers for many of the parts, screen, keyboard, batteries, hinges, power adapter, camera module, hard drive. It's not exclusive to this machine or Thinkpad's or Lenovo or computers. And you should hardly be complaining. The external battery LG Chem batteries last much better than the Sanyo's, and the Sony batteries last a lot better the Sanyo's as well.

I think what @dleccord is saying is that there are two 6 cell batteries, one which is 47 Wh and the other is 72 Wh so it can create confusion. I'm not entirely sure why lenovo is offering both of those as 6 cell options...

47Wh vs 72Wh isn't analogous to the screen situation. That's two versions from different suppliers.

Maybe I'm off base here, and I haven't followed the whole conversation...... but are y'all sure that the 72Wh isn't actually a mislabelled 9-cell battery? That would be 8Wh/cell, virtually the same as the 7.8 Wh/cell of the 6 cell battery.

Wife just had a comment/complaint about her T440s. The N key is sticking up higher than other keys, but there was a bulge along the very bottom edge of the keyboard. I looked at the KEYBOARD REMOVAL video from here:

    ThinkPad T440s Service Training Update RTPW1150 v.2

I removed the keyboard and there is a floppy piece of plastic/silicon that covers the keyboard/touchpad connectors. That silicon piece had managed to slip nearly 1/2" lower (towards the touchpad). If you look, that silicon cover is supposed to sit in it's own little slot. It wasn't even close to that. I think this caused the bulge at the very bottom of the keyboard. Once I put the silicon piece back into it's slot, the bowing went down, but didn't go away completely. I'm not sure what else to do at this point. She's ok with knowing there's not any component damage, but the fact that the silicon cover slipped at all is strange. Especially considering the bottom edge of the cover has sticky tape to keep it in place. I had to unstick it, and restick it to it's proper spot. We'll keep an eye on it and see if it gets worse. I'm wondering if the plastic is permanently bowed.

I don't know, but speculation has been cost considerations in different markets. I could potentially see regulatory issues driving it as well - for example the 72Whr is sized so it plus the 23.5Whr internal falls below the 100Whr maximum for air shipping. Perhaps there are regional considerations driving the smaller option.

I just got my T440s touch screen (AUO) and the screen compared to the non-touch LG model is MUCH better
there is still light bleeding but it is not noticeable

The only problem I am facing is the reflection - compare to the non-touch model, this screen is reflecting every light in the room
I might just buy an anti glare screen protector and install it

anyway, the touch model was not that expensive compared to the non touch (about ~ $200 more) but the screen is great

How's the glare on the touch model compared to other devices with glossy screens? (FWIW, my glossy desktop monitor and phone with glossy screen protector don't bother me at all in that regard. It does make colors a bit nicer. My x120e looks downright drab in comparison, though it has a cheap panel to begin with.)

Also, are you comparing 1080p touch vs 1600x900 non-touch here? (since you said it was $200 more) I could've sworn I've heard the 1080p screen was a better panel in either case.

I haven't been following this thread much after I got my T440s, but thought I'd post an update of my experience after using it for a month+.

    - I only use the trackpoint (not trackpad) and have mostly gotten used to the buttons. I still find it hard to right-click, mainly because my right thumb has to travel so far right to register as a right click that my whole hand needs to rotate (I use my right index finger on the trackpoint). Somehow with physical buttons I didn't notice that problem, maybe because I could click with the side of my thumb instead of having to move the whole thumb off the middle area. Left clicking and middle clicking/scrolling seems to work well, although occasionally I have my thumb slightly too far to one side and register the wrong click.
    - the trackpoint very rarely drifts. The one on my T410s drifted often enough that it became annoying. Maybe the mechanism was just getting old and worn?
    - I sometimes wear polarized sunglasses and they don't work well with the polarization on the screen, unless I turn my head sideways to the left or right. This will be annoying during patio season in the summer :( I could view my T410s straight on with polarized sunglasses.
    - I swapped the Fn and Ctrl keys. But sometimes when I wake up from sleep they revert back to the factory settings until I restart. Grrr.
    - the keyboard is good
    - I wish there were media keys (play/pause at least), e.g., triggered by fn+arrow keys. I think I'll set some kind of global autohotkey to this
    - I have the Intel-7260 AC wifi adapter and sometimes I notice it's buggy connecting to certain access points. Cycling Airplane Mode on and off sometimes helps.
    - The fingerprint reader works *so* much better than the one on the T410s!
    - I don't really like the new power plug: it seems like it'll stress the cord more than the old round one: if the cord was a bit twisted I could turn the plug in the socket.
    - the build quality feels really good!
    - I haven't spent a lot of time on battery - usually just an hour or so before I get back to my AC adapter. But I did spend about 7 hours working on battery one day, and still had some to spare. (I'ts so much better than the T410s!!) My removable battery is a 3-cell.
    - when using the laptop in the sun, I wish the brightness went a couple notches higher

Overall, it is the best laptop I've had!

I guess compared to other devices it is not bad - but the matte display on the non-touch did not reflect anything
I already purchased an anti-glare screen protector and hopefully that will eliminate the reflection

I had the 1080p non-touch version - not sure about the exact price but my non touch was with i7 and in order to balance out the price I got the touch model with i5 and the price ended up being the same -

So both models you were comparing were 1080p then? And the non-touch was truly matte? The reason I ask is because my x120e is actually semi-matte (and still non-touch). I suspect the touchscreen T440s is the same way (except for being a better display in general). And FWIW, I don't use particularly high brightness settings on my devices in general - I haven't checked exact numbers, but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm using ~120cd/m2 a lot. Then again, there are no windows behind the monitor, only one to the side. (North side? The sun doesn't directly shine through there most of the time.) As for my phone, obviously I can't really control what environments that is used in, but it still hasn't bothered me much.

Also, did you notice much of a performance difference between the i5 and the i7? Looks like 25% according to cpubenchmark.net. Then again, if we're ignoring benchmarks, video rendering, and straight up file compression...

Dang it, duplicate post. But come to think of it, with the power options, it seems like we end up disabling those sleep and power saving options a LOT on wireless cards on school laptops before deploying them. It saves plenty of problems from occurring sometimes, that's for sure. I noticed I had to do that on my x120e when running 8.1 on it. That didn't happen on 7 (which it shipped with), strangely enough. I went 7, 8.1 beta, 7, 8.1 release on that machine, using the latest drivers and a clean install each time - and the issues only occurred on 8.1 on the school wifi network. It would simply stop working, yet say it was connected. Upon unchecking the power saving settings, it started working just fine.

For those who've had their T440s for a while now, how do you feel about its longer term reliability/durability? Showing scratches, nicks? shiny keys or palm rest? battery wear?

Well, I think I am one of the guys here who had the T440s now for the longest period of time (my machine was made on the 13th August 2013, very early model, considering the T440s was announced for Transactional markets in early July and for the Global market in early October). So far, it holds up pretty well:

    - Unlike previous ThinkPad T models, the corners of the lid does not get glossy

    - The palmrest shows almost no wear since it is slightly rubberized. It does not get glossy like some of my previous models (L520, T430u)

    - The ClickPad gets dirty, but also not glossy / no obvious wear (the old dedicated keys got glossy pretty quickly)

    - It does get some light scratches, and I also have one bigger scratch at the lid

    - The keyboard itself isn´t matte, so it can´t get really glossy. There is some sort of wear, but you can´t feel the difference between the frequently used keys and the rarely used keys. It does not really get shiny over time

    - The battery wear has been very good so far for the internal battery, Batterybar only shows 2 % wear for the internal battery. The external battery however already has lost 17 % of its capacity

Just got mine. Not impressed so far.

    - The LG screen has a really bad screen door-type effect. I called but the AUO panel isn't in stock and they don't know when it will be.
    - Loud recurring speaker hiss from the left side. I'm not the only one: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T440s-speaker-noise/td-p/1339883 drivers didn't fix it either.
    - I hate the touchpad so far. The clicking is a huge PITA. Why give up physical buttons? I haven't had much luck updating the driver or playing with the sensitivity settings. The cursor is twitchy when trying to browse and click.

I love the design and the keyboard. But the above issues are really frustrating. Between the touchpad and the bad screen I'm tempted to just straight-up return it.

It seems like Lenovo has managed to improve on a bunch of things with the physical design, namely the shiny keys on the keyboard and trackpoint buttons. The only downside seems to be with scratches; I've also found a couple of small scratches on the side of the lid so it does seem like the new finish scratches easier compared to my older T420.

Hmm.. how many cycles on the battery? and which manufacturer? If that is the case then I guess I'll have to budget for an annual purchase of a new battery, or does lenovo provide any warranty for the battery? Something similar to how Apple promises 80% of the battery capacity for up to 1000 cycles?

I was thinking of getting this screen from East Coast LCDs as well. Did you have any problems with the company (online reviews show some customers have complained about them and their parent company, Bliss computers sending damaged or wrong screens).

    Any dead pixels? Back-light bleeding?

Also, I've heard the b140han01.2 screen is actually a semi-gloss rather than full matte like the b140han01.1 is. I was wondering if that is true.

As I mentioned, it was produced on the 13th August 2013.

The internal Lithium-Polymer battery is made by Sony, the external Lithium-ion battery is made by Sanyo. The Sony battery has 22 Whr left from 23 Whr capacity, the Sanyo battery has 19 Whr left from 23 Whr capacity.

    Should be around 31 cycles.

Lenovo provides a limited warranty for batteries, 1 year. For the models with internal batteries, you can buy an extra battery warranty (3 years) for the internal battery, which includes one exchange if the internal battery is defect. Actually, the internal battery seems to be made to last longer and also should last the "^1000 cycles" (the Apple batteries are also Lithium Polymer).

FWIW, my x120e seems to seriously overestimate wear - it was reporting 30% wear (6-cell 56Wh Sanyo) after I'd had it for a year. After calibrating, that went down to ~10%. That laptop is now nearly 3 years old and is at around 20% wear (something like 150 cycles the last I'd checked, probably more by now). Note: I don't have Lenovo's power manager installed now since it's one more thing to load, and the capacity limiting feature (what I installed it for) seems to glitch and drop from 40% to 6% every 6 months or so. I use other tools (like hwmonitor) to see the wear numbers.

(recently did a clean install of windows 8.1 pro). intel driver utility and lenovo software isn't picking anything up.

    anyone know?

The screen was delivered the day after delivery and was exceptionally well-packed. There is one stuck pixel that I have been working at fixing, but it's kind of immaterial - the pixel is stuck red so it's only visible at all on light color backgrounds, and the panel pixel density is high enough that at my normal viewing distance I can only see it if I really look for it. I could return it and try again, but I think I'm done swapping screens for now - otherwise the screen looks great - no spotting as on my original panel, etc.

I'm not particularly sensitive to backlight bleed, but this one isn't too bad - not noticeable at all except on maximum brightness on a black screen - and then minimal - again better than my original AUO screen. If you flex the edges of the screen it comes and goes as expected.

This is about as matte as any panel I've ever seen - not the slightest gloss to it and very minimal reflection in even the brightest rooms.

Yeah, battery wear estimates seem to fluctuate a bit for me. I've had mine since November I think and my external is around 7-10% but it sometimes goes back to 0 (and even above rated capacity) if I leave it on the charger while it's off (I guess forcing it to charge or something.

    Sorry, quoted the wrong post.

So which date of production do you have? I'm trying to find out if this is still a lottery or if they started to pack AUO panels again since february.

Is it possible for the x1 carbon to out score the t440s in benchmark tests?

Any particular reason(S) which explain the results?

Various ways are possible, the easiest is Everest. You can find the model number by googling but the LG should have "LG" in it.

Since they supposedly just became aware of the problem like a week ago and are just starting to look into it, good luck with the non-lottery method:

Hi, everyone. I just returned Dell XPS 9530 because of noise problem. I heard that t440s is an alternative for XPS 9530.

But when I went to the lenovo website, it seems that the same configuration as 9530 is much more expensive. Is this what it costs to have a higher build quality?

High All, just received my new T440s non-touch FHD. Came with AUO display. Guess I won that lottery...

Isn't the XPS 9530 a 15.6" laptop? If that's the case, the approximate Lenovo equivalent would be the W540, although the laptops' intended purposes are different. It stands to reason that a 14" thin-and-light would be more expensive, although you could try the Lenovo Barnes and Noble Gold site to get a sizable discount.

Same here! Received mine (T440s, non-touch FHD, i7, NVIDIA) today. Built date is 14/02. And guess what... it came with AUO display!

BTW: I am located in Europe.
