Mine was a US purchase, delivered to the US, in case that helps anyone trying to work out the screen lottery statistics.
(Btw, I live in Europe too - just that the T440s is like 40% cheaper in the US - although you can't get the NVidia option over there for some reason...)

the material is susceptible to stains and scuffs! especially from the metal rings from the notebooks and it wont come off! im terribly sad. must find a new lid to replace asap.

Which production date? The box should mention year, month and day.

Got my replacement T440s from Macmall. It has a production date of 01/17/2014 and still no AUO. Maybe the February production has them. Otherwise, I was able to score one new from the outlet with multi-touch FHD for $1224.

I just noticed that they increased the estimated time it takes to ship one from their site - perhaps they're sorting out the AUO supply issue?

Also, for those of you that have the LG display, just how bad is it? I saw a video that showed horrible unevenness, but are they all like that? (If it's really as bad as Luminosity on T440s IPS LG screen - YouTube implies, it'll drive me mad.)

That video matches up pretty well with my own LG screen. The viewing angles - the "spotlight effect" - are pretty bad.

Mine was that bad. I assume it was defective. I would have had the screen replaced but a few other issues + the trackpad led me to just return it.

My LG display was also exactly as shown in that video, along with backlight bleed and an annoying crystally or sparkly like sheen to the image that was very annoying. In fact that is the same video I sent to Lenovo's repair facility to show them the spotlight problem after they denied several times that there was an issue with the panel. At that point their fix was to replace the screen with an equally bad LG “spotlight” plagued screen instead of the AUO screen that I requested. I returned the laptop for a refund due to this issue, way too many other additional issues showing up on the forums, and my horrible experience with their tech support personnel arguing with them and waiting a month for their version of a “repair”.

I don't know what makes you think that they are replacing the LG panels with the AUO panels, and even if they do, some people are reporting pixel problems with the AUO screen, so better luck with your repair with either panel if you order a T440s, or getting them to fix the other problems that people are experiencing like speaker noise, touchpad/trackpad issues, screen bezel coming loose or installed improperly, failure to return from sleep mode, rattling exhaust fan, Linux bricking motherboards, incompatibility with Samsung 840 Pro, ultradock issues, etc., etc.

Hey, just got my new t440s with touch display.

The screen is AUO as expected, much better than what I experienced before with the LG one. It does have two spots of lightbleed, probably caused by the bezel - that doesn't affect me.

However, a couple of things are looking weird. The keyboard, keys ASDWEQ have a clacky sound as if they are misplaced. The rest area doesn't appear to be well "glued", if I press on it I can feel it touching the base and coming up as I remove my finger - no sound though as some have complained.

So far those are my only concerns, everything else seems the same as my previous model.

I'll give it a few days to see if it stays strong, doesn't show any other problem (battery, wifi, ...) and then decide whether I'll keep or go with a macbook :)eek :).

I may record a video later if anyone would like to see what I mean by clacky keys and "unglued" rest area.

The touch screen is pretty cool though.

Edit: The "clacky" sound apparently comes from the key touching the keyboard "eskeleton" on its way up, I believe repositioning the keyboard should fix it.

2nd edit: So it seems this time I got the lite-on keyboard, will try to get the chicony one from warranty.

Yes, for people with keyboard issues, I'd make sure to try and re-position the frame first as it is only held in place by friction, so a slight misalignment can make a big difference in key feel and responsiveness.

How do you determine the keyboard manufacturer?

For those following the T440s screen & keyboard lottery:

My T440s FHD non-touch has a manufacture date of "2014-02-09", and came with the AUO screen and the 04X0139 keyboard (supposedly the better supplier in both cases, but I cannot confirm - I haven't physically got my machine yet since a friend took delivery and I won't get to try it out for another 2 weeks...)

    Good luck everyone else!

@zhenya00 go to lenovo website and check the parts of your machine by its serial number.

Has anyone run Autodesk Revit or AutoCAD with the Nvidia GeForce gt 730m? I was really leaning toward either a Dell m3800 (but hate, hate, hate glossy screens). Then looked at the Lenovo w530/540 or Dell m4700 workstations, but those things are too big to lug anywhere. So the t440p offers a IPS matte finish which I love, ultra bay, quad core processor, and nice size for me. The only thing I am not thrilled with is the video card. I don't need this for games, I need it for work.

I have all 3 types of displays for the T440s. The FHD one is made by LG. If you can afford the extra cost for the touch display, just get it. It is hands down the best looking of all of them.

No idea, but I'd guess it's a driver/windows issue rather than hardware. Do you have the latest drivers?

An off-topic question, can anyone recommend a good anti-static sleeve/cover and a touch pen?

I need your advice guys. I am about to make a return and I am torn between two models.

    - One has the i7, 8GB, 256GB, FHD (LG) and 3-year warranty (depot) - $1259 --> I can upgrade the warranty to a 4 year On-Site
    - The other one has the i7, 8GB, 256GB, FHD Touch display but one year warranty (depot) --> $1297 - I can upgrade the warranty to a 3-year on site for $159

Which one make more sense in your opinion?

    Thanks

Personally, I'd go with the touch display model (had non-touch too), the screen is much better and the touch functionality is kinda cool. The added weight doesn't bother me and I kinda like the extra layer in the screen. I didn't get any warranty, I'll buy whenever I need it.

To those that installed a new ssd with a fresh windows 8, how did you do it?
I know it's UEFI so I guess if I download the .iso and install it to the usb it won't work?
I don't need and won't do any backup of the current hdd. I think a saw a tool within windows that allowed to install itself to a usb, any clues? Thanks

You can create a UEFI bootable USB drive from the ISO. I don't remember the name of the program I used, but it's easily found by google. You don't need to do anything else. No bios changes and no need to disable secure boot.

I had the LG screen when I posted that, and have since replaced it with the AUO. Now I can see it properly with my sunglasses!

Also, as everyone else has said before, the AUO panel is much better in every way.

I just did this with my new X240 2 nights ago. I did not have to disable Secure boot and enable CSM support. Did not have to touch the BIOS one bit. The steps to create a UEFI bootable USB install disk is explained here. Good luck.

My T440s arrived on Monday, February 25th. I ordered it on February 3rd.

I just wanted to mention that I ordered it with FHD Touch and got the AUO panel, thus further cementing the idea that if you buy the FHD Touch panel, you get AUO and if you order the non-touch panel, you'll probably end up with the LG panel.

I like the concept of Touch and don't mind the extra weight, but the chief reason I ordered the Touch screen was to ensure I received the AUO panel. Needless to say, I think the panel is great and I also like the tradeoff they made between true matte with antiglare and glossy. It's somewhere in the middle and seems about right.

Usually improves boot speed by a second or two, so I wouldn't say it's very noticeable. There's no real disadvantage, so for a modern OS on a new laptop, I'd stick with UEFI.

In my case, the "transaction date" is always the date when the machine ships from Lenovo but the "posted date" is 2-3 days later when the transaction is actually posted by the CC company. You might have just gotten lucky and got a free laptop :)

anyone not feeling the low voltage processors? i mean its great that im getting 15 hours on the 6+3 cell but i don't feel a huge boost from my last lenovo (y430 with 3gb of ram and a p8800 processor running windows 7). i wish i spend the extra money for the i7 but it's a substantial amount of premium over the base model.

According to passmark, there's a pretty decent difference between the P8800 and the 4200U - and it sounds like the T440s can handle full CPU load + some turbo just fine (but throttles heavily under graphics load - seems like a BIOS update could change that). Are you running a hard drive or an SSD?

If the i5-4200U (or i5-4300U) doesn't give you noticeable performance benefits over a 4-year-old CPU, making the minor bump up to an i7 low-voltage processor will make even less of a noticeable impact.

IMO, unless you're doing some pretty intensive CPU or GPU tasks, the only real improvements the general population will be aware of is power consumption.

hate to break it to you but the i5-4200u isnt as snappy as i wished it was going to be. maybe its operating system but windows 8.1 does boot up significantly faster. ive yet to try solidworks on this machine but the on the other one was just okay except for rendering. using the machine for word processing and lot of internet (many many tabs).

you think the i7 isn't that noticeable over the i5-4200u?
im running the same ssd on both notebooks.

The only differences in processing power are 1) a slight bump in graphics clock speed (1000 MHz versus 1100 MHz) and 2) a bump in clock speed. Not a huge difference. The jump from a C2D P8800 to a Haswell CPU, however, is a huge jump in processing efficiency and power. If that doesn't make a noticeable impact on your workflow, the i7 would make even less of a difference. Intel's just very good at upselling.

If you want your computer to be more "snappy," an SSD and more RAM would probably make a larger difference.

For some reason I installed a 4gb memory stick but when I put everything together, my computer wont turn on. Only the lights on the keyboard (fn,mute, and mic mute buttons) turn on. And I fonud that you have to press the reset button at the bottom of the machine.

I called lenovo support and this lady told me to Google my symptoms (after she told me to take the stick out and reseat it, basically). I'm shocked with what tech sales had to offer. tsk tsk tsk

If one's warranty is already expired then a dremel, steady hands, and patience will get a stripped screw removed.

Source: myself; removed a stripped screw from the wireless WLAN card in an x61s ThinkPad; a bit nerve-wracking but effective :)

Hey, I managed to strip a screwdriver bit the other day. That's what happens when you have a cheap screwdriver, the laptop in question requires a fair bit of torque to remove the screws, and they're small screws to begin with.

As for the SSD - you need M.2 SATA, 40mm if I remember correctly (or the usual 2.5" SATA - know of any height limitations?) - no mSATA whatsoever. I've heard of a mydigitial 128GB SSD that'll fit.

And yes, 4minuteslate, that note was for you. Quotes get confusing sometimes, dang it...
