:/ i tried the rubber band technique but didn't work, I'm attempted to try super glue but am afraid to screw it more. Couldn't find an open service provider today here in Montreal. Such a stupid thing to happen...

    Any suggestions?

Do you have a good quality screwdriver of the correct size? I suspect not or this is unlikely to have happened. If that's the case, go buy a quality set of miniature screwdrivers and make sure you are using the correct one for the screw. That might get it out alone. Otherwise, you need a dremel tool with a conical tip and a steady hand to get the head off.

Drilling or dremelling should be your very last resort.

Try using a high quality screwdriver bit and flat rubber band. You'll need to apply significant pressure to the press the screwdriver downwards into the head and turn very gently.

Otherwise, use a flashlight and magnifying glass to get a clear look into the head for any grip points you may have left.
Then try to match that up with a different size and even type of bit that will get you the traction to turn it.

I think you're issue is with a Phillips + screw, so if a Phillips bit doesn't seem to grab, try using a small torx head bit that fits snugly into head.

If that doesn't work, gently tap the back end of the screwdriver using a quality Phillips bit and a small hammer into the head to re-score the screw head and eventually try unscrewing it.

    Good luck!

My T440s order was delayed by a week and a half, so called in and talked to a representative. Was given 5% off my order, which works out to $50+. Not too bad; have always had fairly good experiences with Lenovo sales and Lenovo support.

The delay was allegedly due to the i5-4200U motherboard/CPU part.

Thanks for the tips, went ahead bought a set of high quality screwdrivers and tried them with a rubber band but still no luck, the screw head is completely round. I will try with a hammer soon.

If the hole is round, your best bet is to find a torx bit that's fits in the round hole as tightly as possible, and use that when hammering it into the screw head.

Remember lots of downward pressure with the screwdriver when unscrewing it. Go slow and be patient.

Yeah, I'd use a drop of superglue or epoxy with a screwdriver a LONG time before I started hitting my new laptop with a hammer......

I ordered the t440s i5 non touch on 2-15 and the x1 non touch on 2-16. The x1 will be here Monday 3-3 while the t440s was delayed as well and now is set to ship 3-4 arriving 3-11. Did the same about the delayed t440s - thanks for the post saved me about $80. The rep stated it was due to a part being unavailable which caused the delay but couldn't get more specific. I also ordered i5.

    @dleccord No I don't have one.

I got some of those and thought they'd just make a whole and not help. Will try them, gotta have lots of patience..

Is it cheaper to get the lowest touch screen model and upgrade the ram/SSD yourself? I think I've heard that the t440s SSD isn't that fast to start with.

It's certainly cheaper to upgrade yourself, even if you're not counting the extra hard drive you would get. The SSD varies since Lenovo uses several different parts, so if you want to control exactly what you get, you'd best add it yourself.

The Lenovo Thinkpad Hardware Maintenance Manuals are a standard resource. Here's the T440s HMM. The most difficult step is apparently getting the base cover off, so I'd read some of the tips from earlier in this and other T440s threads.

Can you post your thoughts on the x1 nontouch in the other thread. Specifically regarding the screen brightness and screendoor effect. And the touchpoint. Still debating X1 vs T440s. Thanks.

I'm about to pull the trigger on the T440s for myself. The wife has had hers for a while, and it's been good enough for her school work. I'll be connecting up 3x24" Dell U2414H monitors via DisplayPort daisy-chaining. I have a few questions before I pull the trigger.

    1. Has anyone tried daisy-chaining multiple monitors together on this laptop?
    2. Why has the Ultra Dock been removed as an option from the T440s?
    3. Has anyone tried daisy-chaining 3 monitors from one DisplayPort on the UltraDock?
    4. I had read that the T440s would have NFC integrated into the trackpad. Wife's didn't have it. Has anyone heard about this?

    Thanks!!

I do not believe the T440s is available to configure with a NFC reader yet. The options available in the T440p (no FPR, FPR only, NFC only, FPR + NFC) have not yet made their way to the T440s.

Late last year, there was word that Lenovo would make the option available for the T440s around February, but clearly that has not been the case. They probably haven't added the option yet due to the already-long lead times for CTO T440s models.

I can add the part number, but I was curious if there was a reason that it was no longer available as a "clickable accessory" after the initial config. I had read about some issues that people were having with the UltraDock 90W and monitors falling asleep (even after the Lenovo issued FW update to the dock). I still think I'll get the dock as well. It just makes sense.

MidnightSun, thanks for the info. I'm wondering if I'll be able to order this FRU later and add it to my T440s. I think it's just a touchpad replacement. I guess I won't bother to wait, as I would like a new laptop soon.

Does anyone have any ideas how well the T440s will handle 3 1080p monitors over DisplayPort?

This update actually does seem to help the usability of the middle click w/touchpoint (using the registry hack, not TPMiddle). It's still nowhere near as responsive as the dedicated buttons were, but I feel like my middle click batting average is now closer to .85 than .6 and the force needed on the click pad seems to be a bit less. \

Synaptics touchpad consumes too much cpu, use three fingers and watch it take the pole position in your task manager. Why didn't Lenovo do it in the hardware, I mean I suppose that's how Apple does, no?
I'm trying to adapt to the nipple and use that instead.

I have been contemplating buying the T440s, but the thing that put me off was the fact that it did not have an HDMI port which I really like to have. I know it has a mini displayport, and I can have a connector to connect it to HDMI. My question is will this provide audio to the TV? I have been through this thread, and I had not found a clear answer. I would usually hook up the laptop using an HDMI port to a TV for video play back, so I was just wondering how it works?

That is what I am thinking of doing - ordering the cheapest FHD version, then upgrading everything myself. Care to do a write up of any issues you may have? ;-)

Also, I haven't had to read-up on hardware in several years, how does that M2 slot work? Is that just another drive that shows up? Or is that used as some sort of cache?

For those looking to open up their T440s, I found this article detailing some of the design decisions. An interesting paragraph talks about how there is a 'tamper switch' for opening the chassis. Here's a quote followed by a link to the whole article:

So, after you replace the panel can you go back into the BIOS and reset the tamper switch status so you can regain the minor increase in boot speed?

    The whole article is here.

yes, the mini displayport has audio in it. i didn't have to change any setting, even though ive read that a few others had to in the sound settings, but for my case, i just plug and play and then switch the monitor settings accordingly.

i bought this cable and it works great.

Open the Color Managment in Windows (it is the same for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1) - Go to the "Advanced" tab - Click on "Change System Standards". In the new window, click on "Add" - In the new window click on the "Browse" button and choose the ICC profile you want - Set the chosen profile as the system standard. Oh, and don´t forget to click on the checkbox "Use Windows color managment" in the Advanced tab - be happy! :)

Does it show displayport as an available audio device only if the device connected actually supports it? Case in point - I have a monitor with HDMI but no ability to handle audio whatsoever (no speakers, no output, etc). My laptop still sees it as an available audio output though (which messes things up since I actually use HDMI audio in other cases).

Referencing this cable here from dieccord's thread:: Amazon.com : Cable Matters Gold Plated Mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt™ Port Compatible) to HDMI Cable in Black 10 Feet : Hdmi To Thunderbolt : Computers & Accessories

I use this exact cable to connect my T440s to an HP ZR2440w and can confirm that yes, it does try to send the audio signal over the cable. I had to disable the HDMI audio device in order to get audio from the laptop itself.

On another note, I think I'm returning my T440s with the AUO touch screen. I absolutely love it and the screen is simply amazing, except that I was mistaken about just how good my eyesight is. I must be getting old, as FHD on a 13" screen is just a touch too small for me -- I find myself squinting at the end of the day. I want to run it at 100% scaling, however, because the screen real estate is critical when I'm programming. If there were a 15" "of this exact computer, I'd leap all over it and pay a huge premium.

Please forgive what is effectively a cross-post from the "Recommend me a Laptop" thread, but does Lenovo even have a good 15" FHD IPS option, regardless of size? I know they have high DPI options (that don't work for my workflow) and TN options (blech!), but I couldn't find a 15" FHD IPS option. If they don't, what other vendors have a good trackpoint with the screen I'm looking for?

    Again, I wish this were a 15" panel...sigh.

Ok, I was planning on buying a T440s w/ the SSD, but after looking at the price difference, and some of the comments regarding how the stock SSD isn't great (depending on which one you get), I'm leaning more towards buying the HDD model, and then swapping in the SSD (Samsung 840 Pro) that is in my current laptop. However, I want to make sure I understand the process correctly. Unlike probably most on this forum, I'm more sketchy on the software aspects of this than the hardware/physical stuff.

So I think this is the general process:
    1) Play with the laptop a few days and make sure there are no problems, as I'd imagine swapping the drive will give me warranty issues down the road if I need to use it.
    2) Make a USB key with all the software needed
    3) Disable built in battery
    4) Remove external/swappable battery
    5) Remove base cover (using a spudger for the tabs)
    6) Swap drives
    7) Replace base
    8) Replace external/swappable battery
    9) Re-enable built in battery
    10) Install software

Most of these steps are just basically pulled from the HMM. But here are my questions:
    1) Am I missing any steps necessary?
    2) How do I create the USB key? I'm assuming it is the same steps as creating recovery media in the T440s user guide. Correct?
    3) I'm also assuming that the user guide directions are correct for reinstalling the software (basically, hit F12 during bootup and select the USB drive, then go through the install process). Is this correct?
    4) Anything else I'm missing? Do I need to change anything in the BIOS for the SSD, or will all that be done automatically once Windows 8 goes through the install process?

I've never seen Windows send the same audio signal through multiple jacks at once. What I'm talking about is that on my laptop, when I plug into HDMI, it sees HDMI as an audio output. If that's the default, it sends audio through HDMI (whether the monitor actually supports audio or not) and not the 3.5mm jack.

I get the feeling HDMI in general just assumes you're sending audio. If you guys use a miniDP to DVI adapter, for example, does it still see another audio output? (My monitor has DVI, HDMI, and VGA - no way to handle audio over HDMI - so I may actually use a miniDP to DVI adapter if this means I don't have to fiddle with the audio settings going back and forth to a TV.)

I don't think you need to disable the internal battery, I did the hdd swap and installed a new memory module just by opening the base cover and removing the external battery. Didn't do a single backup, already put win7 in the mechanical hdd that came with it for another computer.

There may be a few things that you should do in order to avoid the known issues with the pro version of your ssd. I used the evo so it's all good.

Other than that I'd say use a good screwdriver ;) and don't use metal to open the tabs (I used a guiter pick, worked better than my spry pen tool).
