Thank you for your input. I have to say that I have read about the fan noise too, and that is not normal. I might also add, the fact that these are $1,000+ laptops, there is no reason we (or you) should have to apply tape to remedy a fan noise defect. I would return that machine and get a replacement.
To address the touchpad, I have ordered, and sent back, many of these models and have noticed a very high degree of variance in the touchpad. Some have a loud click, some don't, some are dampened, I have even seen them uneven (usually the left side sitting lower than the right with a noticeable variance in travel when you click). I even had one where it was a loud clank when you click on the right side but very quiet on the left side lol. I don't see how Lenovo allows this kind of problem in a flagship series.

I will say though, of the 2 models I mentioned ordering earlier, I received the first one yesterday. Everything was good....except no freaking webcam. Are you kidding me???? How can someone build an i7 model loaded to the teeth and omit the webcam...lol. I'm still waiting on my touch model to get here and then I will decide between the 2 which one to keep (provided these both aren't defective too). I've already noticed a snapping sound when I press the middle of the base cover with this one that I have now.

Go around the edges of the base and make sure all the latches are snapped in tightly. I noticed something similar after I removed the base of my T440s to install RAM, and the culprit was a latch I had missed.

Yea, I tried that. I removed the cover, replaced it and tightened all the screws. All the clips are in place. It feels like a crunching/popping coming from the middle. I can feel the vibration and the pop pronounced. It's as if roll cage feels like its cracked or something.

    Hi all,

I got a new T440s for 2 weeks, got some weird problem with the SSD, cant even do the Factory reset even though I still have the hidden partition for it.

Basicall, I got the blue screen of "Kernel_data_inpage_error" for several times", tried to restart, then the laptop went frozen. Did another restart, it appears with "2100: detection error on HDDO (Main HDD)" and wont restart again. I called support and they said I should do a "factory reset". I logged in with F11, got to the reset, click but it said "Recovery cant perform".

I can still log in and use the computer for now, but pretty sure that the problem shall come back.

Anyone has the same issues? any advice would help.

    With best

    Hey thread,

Few comments back I gave a mini-review and talked about how the fan gives a high-pitched noise, one solution I mentioned that I found was to apply pressure to the fan, which I can tell you does not work.

Anyway, I found a youtube video with a guy who has the same 'problem': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpRQ967QdFA#t=583
He compares it to the t430s which is virtually silent at fan state 1, while just like mine, fan state 1 on the t440s is just annoying with it being very audible due to the high pitched noise. So just to make sure, this isn't normal right? I will be trying to see if Lenovo can send me a new fan and that I give back the one in my laptop. It's really easy to replace, or should I send back the whole unit?

This machine feels too sturdy and looks too nice to be ruined by some annoying whining fan.

A 2100 error usually means a drive problem. You can see if there's a firmware update for the drive, but I would call support again and tell them the reset didn't work.

Backlight bleed can be found on both. Only way to stop it is quality manufacturing process.

Backlight bleeding is actually pretty much normal for LED IPS screens. Only the severity varies from screen to screen. The AUO Display has more bleeding than the LG screen.

My full review of the T440s!

    Important specs: i5-4210U; FHD Touch display; 3-cell & 6-cell 72Whr battery; wireless AC card; 8GB RAM; 256GB 840 EVO SSD (self-installed); 3-year on-site warranty

Rating as for general consumers: 7 due to high pricing and too much power for internet consumers, and too little for gamers
Rating as for University student [who doesn't game]: 10

    My laptop use: Internet; Full Microsoft suite; SPSS (and other statistical software); Photoshop; Music; Use of cloud; Skype;

Performance: Performance is great, I can definitely see this last me 5 years performance wise. I do feel that the SSD is a must have though, for me it makes all the difference. Everything starts up very quick, boot takes about 15 seconds. Photoshop works fine for what I do, I am not a graphics artist. The software that are important for me, such as SPSS, Powerpoint (with edited videos); and internet work absolutely fine. I've seen what those Intel Pentium processors can do in those 250 Euro Dell laptops, so let me just add that even on powersaver, or even trying to force the laptop in its lowest processor power settings, it still works very nicely, with some minimal lag if you over-do it, but you probably won't be in this power setting when you want to do high-performance tasks.

Screen: Coming from HD to FHD, I do notice the difference in resolution, but it is even more dramatic when I opened my old laptop again yesterday. I changed the font size to 100% to prevent any weird fuzzy upscaled font that happens every now and then, or the weird website format. I recommend this is one of the first things to change if you get this laptop (right click desktop>screen resolution>make text and other items larger or smaller>100%). Everything will appear quite small, but I got use to it very quickly, going back will be difficult as I make use of all that space very well that I have now.

The screen has backlight bleeding, which is not nice. In normal use you don't really see it, as you need a black background, but when watching something (such as a movie) it can be distracting, but this is not that bad. The screen is very very nice overall. Contrast is good, colours are good (calibrated it a bit, it was quite green), brightness could be a bit higher, but even in bright environments it was doable.
The screen is reflective but the anti-reflective coating does work. On lower screen brightness I do see myself as a blur, but this is not nearly as bad as glossy screens. However, the more you look at the side of the screen, the sharper the reflections become, but this is an unrealistic scenario to be in.

I do use the touchscreen, writing quick notes on powerpoint slides, or using it as a tablet (sort of) when I sit on the couch. I don't regret my choice in this regard.

Overall I rate this screen a very solid 8, losing points on brightness, backlight bleeding, and a very tiny bit on reflections. Love the screen.

Keyboard: This is one which caught me off-guard. The keyboard is very good. A bit on the loud side, BUT SO ARE ALL KEYBOARDS. The clicks are more like thumps which is nice. There is however no pause/play and next buttons, which is weird, which means that if I want to pause music in Foobar2000 I have to open it and pause/play it. There are other ways to make it easy for you, but I didn't bother yet.

The surprising part: I don't remember what it is called, but it is a test to see how many buttons you can press before you can't input anymore. If you try to press 3 keys at the same time, you are greeted with a 'bleep' noise, and the third key pressed is not recognized. For me it isn't that bad, but I tested how this would play on Minecraft and navigating was annoying. So don't buy this machine thinking that the only game you play is minecraft, because it wont play well, or else get an external keyboard...

Trackpad: Trackpad is nice, as long as you use it as a trackpad and not a clickpad. Clicking is a bit weird, making a thumping noise. Its not bad, but I wouldnt use it in a work environment much. This makes using the trackpoint difficult as you will have to press the trackpad to register a click. As a trackpad however it is excellent. All features work excellent.

Battery life: On 3-cell: On high performance about 2-3 hours (full brightness, lower performance tasks); On balanced about 3-4 hours (near full brightness, lower performance tasks); On powersaver about 5-6 hours (near full brightness, lower performance tasks). Overall excellent. with the 6-cell battery it all pretty much doubles. This is very useful for me when studying a full day at University and I require performance. Although finding a wall-plug isnt difficult, battery's are just easier.

Speakers: They are fine, is good enough for average consumer. They are under the laptop, which is a bit weird.

Build quality: One of the main reason's I'm buying this. I'm all too familiar with products that breakdown easily. I wanted one that will last me at least 5 years. I really hope this will be it.

Fan: When I received the product, the fan kept going on where it gave a very high-pitched noise. This was beyond useable for me, I kept getting a headache very quickly. I installed TPFanControl_0.62 so to make sure it doesn't turn on much. On balanced and powersaver it hardly ever turns on now. This was a short-term solution, so I called Lenovo, and within two days there was a guy in my house to replace the fan (I live in the Netherlands). The noise is still quite high-pitched but not close as high as before. I only hear it when I go to fan mode 2 or higher (0 being off and 1 being the lowest with the fan turned on, and 7 the highest). Very pleased. Laptop CPU doesn't go above 35C with Fan Mode 1. Very cool. I would just leave it in Smart mode, the fan hardly ever turns on as it doesnt go above 55C much.

Ports: One of the main reason I went for this over X1 Carbon. The ports are important for me. The no HDMI is a shame, but I have a dongle for that, and I hardly use that anyway. 3 USB ports is a minimum for me, which this has. University uses VGA projectors, which put this above other laptops from other brands for me. I also travel quite a bit, so an Ethernet port is a nice addition.

Wireless: Awesome, reaching new top speeds and distance from router that my other laptop couldn't even close to achieve.

Overall this laptop cost me 1300 Euros, with 185 Euro discount included. I bought a 256GB 840 EVO a while ago, which was 125 Euro, furthermore, I'll be getting ~200 Euro back for the VAT. This gives a final cost of 1,225 Euro, which is good for what I want and how much I had to spend. This will have been a worthy investment if it lasts me those 5 years.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

    Yeeps.

I just ordered a T440s towards the end of this week, along with an 850 Pro 256GB SSD and the 8GB Crucial RAM upgrade.

I'm excited to replace my aging, giant Asus G71, but my T440s isn't scheduled to be built until December!

Have anyone else experienced such long wait times? By the time my Thinkpad is supposed to arrive, I'll be halfway through finals week :/

Mine took about 10 days from order to delivery. Initial estimates from the Lenovo site were very conservative (3+ weeks).

My estimates kept getting further and further away, and then suddenly the machine shipped. Took 3 weeks (which was in line with their business days estimate).

It sounds like people's experiences run the gamut between short and long wait times.

The wait time when I ordered said 5-7 business days, then the website said something like 10-15 for a couple of days, and it says 5-7 again now.

I'll just be here gritting my teeth until my T440s ships, I suppose :swoon:

I expected 1 month, a far over-estimate. It made waiting easy and I was quite happy when I suddenly had the UPS man giving it to me on the 9th day. I live in the Netherlands btw.
Lenovo said 2-weeks build time, 5-6 days to ship.

I’ve returned my T440s (disappointed with the screen and trackpad) and bought a Macbook Pro R 13.3. Very happy with this decision. Both bootcamp and Parallels are good options to me and the screen is so much better. Of course macs are not as serviceable but, if the configuration you buy is going to suffice for years to come, and if you are not likely to have problems with the machine, serviceability becomes unimportant.

The trackpoint would be fine if I could tap to click rather than depress the whole clickpad.

    Is this possible?

Also, when I use the trackpoint, the trackpad is not immediatly usable, as in there is a small delay. Is it possible to remove this delay?

I do have the latest driver.

Have you played around with the Trackpad driver options? I think you are able to enable tap to click.

Control Panel --> Hardware and Sound --> Mouse (Devices and Printers) --> See right-most tab.

Edit: About the delay, I also find it annoying. Sadly, I don't know how to get rid of this. It almost seems like a design feature, so that people using the trackpoint wouldn't accidentally move the cursor with the trackpad??

Actually, Windows 7 requires secure boot to be disabled, and usually needs legacy BIOS mode (not UEFI). If you currently have Win7 on the machine (or bought it with that), you'll probably want to switch the machine to UEFI and optionally enable secure boot before installing 8 or 8.1. Personally, I run Windows 8.1 on a t440s, and have it set to UEFI only, but with secure boot disabled. The install media picked up the key built into the BIOS/UEFI just fine.

He means when using the trackpoint, it requires full presses to do the buttons. Which cannot be disabled, at least not with anything that comes with the drivers.

Exactly. When the trackpoint is used, the trackpad only works for the buttons. To re-engage the trackpad completely, you have to show the system that's what you want to do, which involves that delay.

Anyone to sell NS-A056 board with connecting cable? :)

Tip - board provides third M.2 slot under internal battery in machines that come without smartcard reader and with regular (non-SSD) hard drives, usually hosting SSD cache with 16GB SSD. My config came with 256GB SSD and don't have this board at all and I would like to try something with it. ;) I don't need SSD drive, just the board which it sits in and connecting cable. Details can be found here in pictures https://plus.google.com/+JimOltman/posts/JGtzG4r1CuJ.

Edit. Yes, I hated T440s based on reviews until I got it into my hands. :) Still hate the clickpad, but the rest of the machine is just great. :D

Where I am getting at: I will be getting a new one, which I decided after much thought, painful. I bought it at a discount last time and I had my own SSD, so my cost was round 1300 euro. Same configuration (touch) with SSD now is round 1650 Euro. So that hurts.

There is currently 10% discount on the website. Non-touch FHD, i5-4300u, and SSD 256gb goes round 1350, which I think is doable.

My question is, is it worth it to get an AOU FHD non-touch over touchscreen? The touch was fancy and nice every now and then, seeing that the trackpoint isnt the easiest to use and using the trackpad isnt always speedy if you dont have a mouse, which made touch faster. You can tell that touch hasn't fully integrated into the Windows 8 workspace when you try do to simple tasks like scroll and zoom on various applications, but it was pleasant.

With Windows 10 coming, I can see a less of a need for touchscreen.

So which one to get? Anyone who had some time with both and has a strong preference? I take good care of my stuff (besides that my previous got stolen), so smudges on the screen aren't an issue. I will certainly take more security measures...

Late to this party but I am a new T440S owner.

Just wanted to confirm the fact that Lenovo is still shipping the LG panels in the FHD Non-touch model. I read enough of this thread to know that it was a possibility but decided to roll the dice anyway because I like the other features of the T440S. I can also confirm that the LP140WF1-SPK1 LG panel really does perform poorly. The light bleed around the edges is not too bad but the light falloff as you move off-axis is dramatic. The anti-glare performance is quite good.

I believe what is most disappointing is that a T440S delivered in Dec 2014 was built with an LG panel with a Mfg Date of 2013 Week 0. So I have a new machine with a nearly 2 year old panel. I am going to thoroughly check out the rest of the machine before deciding what to do. This is a laptop for my personal use and I tend to use equipment for many years so I really want to get it working in top form. I am aware of the availability of replacement panel for $100 that I might try since it seems most people have had poor luck getting Lenovo to install the AUO panel.

Thanks to all the previous posters who have provided valuable information on the T440S.

And to the previous poster (ErasmusStudent ) I can say that I have a strong preference for the non-touch T440S. I have used the touch version and find the extra 1/2 pound of weight to be noticeable and just find my usage pattern does not benefit from touchscreen operations enough to want the extra hardware on my machine.

Don´t believe in this date - its like this for my LG panel as well, and it has been the same for my former AUO panel. It seems this is just a generic date...

I bought my laptop in June 2014. 15+ screens shipped and 8 technicians later in December 2014, I got the AUO ( screen installed! The original screen wasn't even the same LG screen that they're using now for replacements. The newer LG the technician installed did improve it slightly, but there was still the problem with uneven brightness. The AUO is much better and looks great.

Btw, the tech had 2 AUO screens with him, so there are AUO screens out there in the hands of the IBM techs. Don't let them tell you they don't exist. Now I feel I can finally get to studying with my laptop's screen instead of using my desktop.

Edit: FYI, I'd really recommend to anyone not to buy this laptop because of the issues with the screen. If you need one for work/study where you read a lot of black text on white backgrounds, then go for something else or plan to buy a lcd off of amazon and fix it yourself. It's soooo not worth the trouble.

Thanks for this information about the date code. I obviously need to just disregard that piece of data.

Wow, that's not the way a customer should be treated. I used to work for IBM back-in-the-day when ThinkPads were IBM products. We tried really hard not to let quality problems like this go on for very long. I consider Lenovo to be a good company but the lack of quality control on something as customer critical as the display is troubling.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Did you have a system password? This should make your T440s useless for most thieves.

I did not have a system password. I can cancel the warranty, but that is all I can do to render the system useless, which won't really cut it. I won't be doing that for a bit though.

I have a suspect with eye witnesses so police are getting involved. Seemingly students should not trust fellow students working at the help desk of their own university. Attempting to implement a system where the people who receive lost items are held accountable. although that won't do much in getting back my laptop.

    Sorry for being off-topic.

The guys from IBM were great, and lenovo's customer service too. I think it was a problem with their parts department...
Either-way, I'm sure their next gen of this laptop will not have the same screen issues.

Hello, I just received my new T440S with the LG display and it appears with the light bleed I need to replace it with the AUO. Would anyone please let me know the procedure for replacement? I have the 3-year onsite warranty. Should I just call Lenovo Support and inform them of the light bleed and that I am requesting a AUO replacement?
    Thanks kindly in advance.

How bad is the light bleed? I had light bleed on my X220 and E7440, but only notice it when booting. I don't believe you can request the AUO, but could be wrong.

The AUO screen has way more light bleed than the LG screen.

Thanks, but the real problem is that the LG panel is so dim. I have other notebooks that have much brighter and clearer screens. Does anyone know if changing to the AUO panel would give a brighter and/or clearer display? Also, I found this AU OPTRONICS panel on Amazon:

Amazon.com: AU OPTRONICS B140HAN01.2 LAPTOP LCD SCREEN 14.0" Full-HD DIODE (SUBSTITUTE REPLACEMENT LCD SCREEN ONLY. NOT A LAPTOP ): Computers & Accessories

Has anyone tried this panel to know if it would be a significant upgrade over the LG?

    Thank you.

Careful what you wish for. I have yet to see a bad IPS LCD and I can't imagine a 14" LCD would be fuzzy. How bad could it be? You want to see a dim screen, go look at a eight year old T60 with CFFL bulb. Now that's dim. I've been here longer than most and forums like this do an overwhelming amount of good, but this is one area where they fall short. One person post they have this or that problem(not to say they're aren't legitimate concerns), then all of a sudden 10 more people who never knew they had a problem, are upset thinking their machine is defective because of what someone else wrote, not something they experienced themselves. Being content with what you have is probably a good thing. I do it myself, so you're not alone in that regard.

My second day with my new t440s from the Black Friday sale. i7-4600u, 12gb, 256ssd, touch. I've been using thinkpads exclusively since 1999, replacing my last (an x220). Overall very pleased.

Only gripe so far is the trackpoint, but I'm already getting used to it. It's not as catastrophic to me as some have suggested it would be, definitely not the best interface I've used but definitely workable. And I'm loving the display and low-glare finish, keyboard, and overall usability of the machine. Happy with my new machine.

I can share my recent experience with this exact issue.

A few weeks ago I posted my early experience with a new T440s non-touch FHD machine. It had the LG LCD panel and it was clearly unacceptable for an IPS high-quality display that was advertised for the T440S. I spent the next weeks checking out all other aspects of the unit and overall it met my expectations.

So this past weekend (Dec 15, 2014) I called Lenovo support and talked to the service rep about a panel replacement. To my surprise, he immediately offered to send a replacement FRU for me to do the replacement. This was unexpected since the panel is not a "Customer Replaceable Unit" but I was not complaining. I made it clear that the only FRU PN I was aware of that solved the issue was the 04X0436 AUO panel. He confirmed that the FRU number was valid for my T440S and wrote up the ticket.

To my further surprise, was the UPS truck at my door Monday morning (Dec 16) with 2 Overnight FRU boxes. One with the 04X0436 and one with the LG panel 04X0626. I check the 04X0436 and confirmed it to be an AUO Model B140HAN01.2 Mfg Date 14/37. The other FRU 04X0626 was an LG panel like the one in my original T440S. The other surprise was that the old LG panel from my laptop was marked with a FRU number I had never seen before 00HN825. I found one listing on the web showing this as a TFT panel.

The good news is I was able to replace my panel with the AUO following some of the excellent direction in this forum and the results is very satisfying. The panel performs just like you would expect an IPS panel to. The brightness is better than the LG, the viewing angle is much better and the minor light bleed around the bezel is about the same.

My faith in Lenovo and their sub-contract service team at IBM has bee somewhat restored. I am still disturbed that Lenovo quality control is not better at managing suppliers and parts issues. Especially something as critical as the display panel on a flagship business PC. Overall, I am a happy camper and plan to keep the T440S hopefully for a lot of years. I hope this experience might help someone else.

You stated that you "have yet to see a bad IPS LCD" and " How bad could it be?" implying that the previous poster simply does not understand what a good or bad display looks like. I would be glad to show you the "IPS LCD" panel I just removed from my T440S and I am confident that you could no longer say the you had not seen a bad IPS LCD display. The LG panel Lenovo has shipped in many T440S machines during the past year would not met the Lenovo specifications for brightness or viewing angle.

Sorry but "Being content with what you have is probably a good thing." is not going to cut it for me on a piece of hardware I paid a lot of hard earned money for and it does not perform up to the seller's promised quality level.

Would someone please direct me to the way to determine the exact LCD Panel Model Number on the T440s? I had a small info program for this then lost it and I could not find the display panel model number in the BIOS either. Thanks you in advance.

Very very strange. In Denmark, I was about to order a T440s customized yesterday, direct from Lenovo online shop. Went through to the checkout page, but got distracted last minute by my 2 year old.

Back again today, the ability to buy direct is now completely gone for the T440s.

Is it being replaced? Anyone know what's going on? Called the Lenovo sales support, and she said, "Uhm, all I can say is that they're not in stock anymore."

    Hi,

<s>Kind of a stupid question but anyway. When I ordered my machine there was an option to disable "micro hard-drive" which was m.2, I selected that thinking it would disable extra m2 slots and not all of them.
I don't recall seeing such slot when I opened up the mahcine to replace the hdd and memory, everest and windows itself don't list any m.2 slots. My question is, doesn't all t440s come with at least one m.2 slot?</s>

Nevermind that, I found the system details in my order history:

    Storage Adapter No M.2

    :(

Didn't want to split my ssd.
