I thought the one guy from Hong Kong who played with one in this thread actually liked the new trackpoint buttons. So maybe it's a matter of personal preference? For me I've never had a Thinkpad but the reason is want to get one is primarily for the trackpoint, but if it's not as good as it used to be it'll still be better than my current laptop without one. Personally I have a feeling it's just something you have to get used to. Meh, if I could use a crappy first Gen click pad for 3 years I can use a modern click pad with trackpoint attached.

@ iofthestorm,
Yes, of course its a personal preference thing. I am guessing you just need some time to get used to the new TrackPad, thats all. Thats what many users said.
The guy who wrote the review (he is also registered here, his username is "600X") don´t own the T440s. He had some time in the reseller store of the sponsor of the German ThinkPad-Forum, so he could play with the T440s some time. Its not a user-review, its more or less and "First impression"-review. -
Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T440s
Page 69 has 2 mounting points and 2 heatpipes
Page 75 has 1 mounting point and 1 heatpipe. -
^in fact most of the diagrams in the manual show two heat pipes to two different locations.

Another interesting video about the new TrackPad(TrackPoint-Button design:

With these trackpads that have integrated trackpoint buttons is it still possible to disable the trackpad without disabling the buttons? I routinely disable the trackpad on my laptops, and I'd hate to think that I have to keep it active just to have the buttons available.

Interesting video, can anyone please translate a summary for us?
I think the trackpad/pointer buttons will work fine, if not I'll b!tch about it for the next 5 years. Either way I'm going to wait for the non -s models, namely T440/p, to come out before deciding my next ThinkPad. By then there should be many great reviews of the T440s (not to mention a sale on the T440s when the others come out).
On a side note, I quite like the minimalist look of the new machines, but sincerely hope our space bar won't be that tiny lol -

In any case, it's very unlikely that they will reach doorsteps before October. -

Funny, I just googled T440s and now the first thing that comes up is the Lenovo website. It says "coming soon". Anyone knows how long it has been up on the American Lenovo site? I could have sworn it was not on there last week. But I can't remember. Maybe that does mean it is coming in September? To have laptop "coming soon" for more than a month seems like a long time.
I guess the next question would be, anyone know the timelines of "coming soon" to availability? -
The T440s is following the same release path that all their notebooks have in the past few years. First, there's a mention or leak (i.e. hidden website page) of a new notebook in the works (T440s). Then a few bloggers or journalists see one or touch one in the flesh. Then a week or two later, Lenovo will post an order page saying "shipping in 2 or 3 weeks". Of course there are always unforeseen delays that always pop up. Sorry "it's a Chinese holiday this day/week" or they run out of bluetooth chipsets, SSD's, or some other random part that always puts the delay back a few weeks.
Like most of us have said, ordering is the easy part. They can have the website up tomorrow ready for ordering, but delivery is something else. October unfortunately is still looking like the most likely delivery date. -
I am a T430s owner (i5 - 3320M/ 16GB RAM/ NVIDIA NVS 5200M 1GB) and wonder if T440s (i5- 4200U/ 12GB ram/ nVidia GeForce GT730 2G ) is a good replacement in terms of CPU speed and gaming performance.i can search all the CPU/ GPU benchmark score but I tend to listen advice from experience
I also need advice to choose either 14" HD+ LED Backlight 10 points Multi Touch(1600 x 900) or 14" FHD IPS Backlight (1920 x 1080) without touch. it seems win 8 w/ touch screen makes more sense but the FHD is really attractive...
Thank you for your help!!! -

To order in September and receive in October is definitely better than ordering in October and receiving in November.. Although, I have heard stories about 2 month delays so......

It's order September, receive October. Enough said.

It will arrive some time after the Labor Day Sale, and likely after the post-labor day you-didn't-miss-the-labor-day-sale-because-we're-extending-our-sale sale. Sept 9th. -

Going through the service training pages for both models, it looks like the T440s hardware design is almost completely the same as the T431s. The dimensions are the same, as is the weight. The biggest change is the dual batteries. I wonder how much inferior the touch model's screen will be. It always seems to add some grain and take away contrast.

Just wanted to clarify, there's no IPS on the T440s correct?

The T440s will be announced in September, thats for sure. The Topseller configurations will be available in October.

Looks like if you order the Core i7 version, you'll get the HD 5000.
And yes, the IPS screen does look very good. -

These are the pre-configured non-education models, which the Lenovo resellers sell (standard configurations).
There is a "Topseller-Portfolio Guide", which is updated every quarter. The next update will come in October. See: TopSeller Portfolio Quick Reference Guide | LPN | (US) -

Tried that once. Usually like buying online. Just easier, if it works it works if it doesn't it doesn't. As long as I don't pay full price. -
I usually disable tap click and cursor move on the touchpad, but still enable multi-finger gestures since the chance of triggering those events by accident is low. I may set a script to disable everything if a external mouse is used. -
-
I'm getting a bit concerned about the weight of this notebook. If the touchscreen adds .4lb like with the X1C, you're getting into the 3.8lb range, which is still with the 3cell battery.
-
The top sellers are made in preset configurations in hundreds of units at a time, and for each market. Once they ship to resellers from Lenovo, they're generally available for next day delivery.
The CTOs are built at the Lenovo factory and will generally get to you in around two weeks, although CTO availability and top seller availability may not be at the same time.
For example, here in the UK there have been three top seller preset configurations of the T431s available from resellers since the middle of July. But no CTO yet - still shows as coming soon on the Lenovo website.

I would not be surprised if the T440s had something better than a 4500U processor, although I doubt it would get the 4650 -
Hey guys - I've been waiting on this machine, but I'm starting to fear it is going to be a $2000 machine. I am starting to look for a backup option. Could I get your opinion on instead buying this System76 machine and separately buying a copy of Windows 8 Pro (around $130). How do you think that would compare to the t440s? What would I be compromising on? Thanks.

@ qwerty3656,
Its a Clevo. The same Clevo as this one: Review Schenker S413 (Clevo W740SU) Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews I would say: It plays one league below the T440s. Maybe the components are more powerful, but everything else, except of the screen, which is likely the same, is just worse.
