The ThinkPad line up has not been seen as high performance or powerful cooling notebooks for a long time. People in need of fast chips should look elsewhere.
What Lenovo is doing is simply following the main steam. That's how its business became bigger and bigger.
-
Duplicate post. Sorry.
-
W540 or something.
ThinkPadders should feel very thankful that Lenovo is not joining the "plastic is cheap, omg fancy metal shell" trend, for now. (The metal shell is very new to Clevo's line up as well. Who knows if Lenovo will do something similar later.) -
I hope this still works, as it's how I've always used it. So simple and takes less effort. What I dislike about MacBooks is the need to actually click.
I hope we don't see a shift away from DP to HDMI too. On the previous Intel chips the integrated graphics output has been limited to 1920. Not enough! The same chip can output much more over DP - currently using 2560x1440.
S -
Well what my current laptop has, and what I think is ideal for modern laptops, is to have HDMI and miniDP. Both are digital interfaces, DP for driving high resolution monitors and HDMI for TVs. HDMI should also be able to drive high resolution screens but I guess Intel is weird about it (I've had to use DP for 2560x1440/1600) but I think newer Intel chips might not have that problem? Either way, VGA is fat and basically only needed for projectors and I think in the interest of a thinner profile it makes sense to just use adapters for that one last hold out of analog.
-
The future will be HDMI + mDP for ThinkPads. VGA will be dropped in two years (Intel and AMD will stop supporting VGA), as well as DVI.
-
Yeah, these are gone.
-
You can always turn on tap click functions, regardless of whether it's a clickpad or not, or whether it has independent physical buttons or not.

Hah, HP figured this out three+ years ago, I'm a little sad that it's taken people so long to realize it. I think it's one of the few things they've managed to get right (well, I think my Envy 14 is quite good overall but still a lot of questionable decisions, and they've basically discontinued their premium lines and re-branded their midrange line as premium). Long after CRTs died we can finally move on from VGA :-(
-
Well, ThinkPads are still business notebooks, unlike your Envy. VGA is still much used in many companies, many projectors are still needing VGA.
-
sad but true... also in schools and even universities! At least here in Germany...

I'm curious about 14" IPS screen matrix in T440s -- Have somebody heard a word about manufacturer and code?
FRU list is disappointingly useless in figuring this out... -
Its from AUO, this is clear. We don´t know for 100 % sure which panel they use, but it is likely to be the B140HAN01.
I will check it when I get my T440s at the end of the week. -
Bloody Nokia Adept Notebook Consultant
Yes, I was thinking about the same screen model. Just wondering whether there were some hands-on reports or leaks...
Wow! Great announcement! Is it your personal PC or Lenovo has sent it to you for test-drive
-
Thank you!
It will be my personal PC.
-
Hi IBMthink,
How are you able to get a T440s so quickly? Do you have an inside source at Lenovo? -
can someone explain the whole 500gb with 24gb ssd msata? is the 24gb used as a cache or do Lenovo put the OS into this 24gb SSD for faster start up?
-
The T440s I tested did not have the screen door effect.
Campus models can already be bought. My local ThinkPad shop already got a few shipments.
As far as I know it's for cache. -
VGA is still a great interface with no known upper resolution limit, it works pretty much everywhere; projectors, televisions, monitors. HDMI is a licensing game with a need to buy new standard cables every couple of years, and the full size port isn't much smaller than VGA. Display Port is only useful for dedicated monitors, and you often need some sort of dongle. These are practical business systems intended to work in any environment, I hope they don't phase out VGA any time soon.
-
Considering the sucessor to VGA (DVI) has a bigger port, i doubt VGA will be going anywhere. Only thing i see is MinidisplayPort/Thunderbolt, but nah.
-
What is the difference between Campus models and standard ones ?
-
Campus models are meant for students. They are cheaper and often come without OS and in certain preconfigured configurations. (currently there are only 2 available) In the US it should be known as "Barnes and Nobles" on the official Lenovo page.
You can only get your hands on one if you can verify that you are a student. -
Is the touch model available to either of you to look at?
-
No, the Touch model isn´t available here yet. I don´t think it will be released until October or late September.
-
Do you all think that you will be able to customize this model, or will it have pre-configured models?
-
that's horrible. is it possible to program other keys to do that function?
-
i'm a student. i logged into the barnes and noble shop and i can't find where to buy a t440s
-
Maybe you know whether it's possible to buy it from Germany if you're a student from a different EU country? I'm still a student after all... and as I know, the student card must be valid in all EU countries.
-
I don't think it's available in the US yet. They would have announced it.
By the way, does anyone know what combinations of discounts stack? I went onto the T431s page from the student portal, and all I see is 20% off from the current coupon. How does the B&N discount work? What if I have other coupon codes? -
There will be CTO models later this year.
Then they don't sell it on the Lenovo page. Sorry.
I have no idea, this is the shop where I tested the T440s: ThinkPad T440s 20AQS00600 - ok1.de - Shop für Lehre und Forschung
Give the seller a call (or contact him for that matter), I know him personally. He's very nice and speaks excellent English. He should be able to answer your questions. Keep in mind that German models have German keyboards. (and backlit keyboards are very expensive, so replacing them might cost some $$$) -
By the way, does anyone remember the starting prices of t430, t430s, t431s at launch in Europe?
-
For Europe, I don't know. But at least for the US, the prices at launch are the same as they are on the website now (although there are coupons now). For example, in the US, the base T431s is still listed at $1099, which was the launch price.
-
I asked them a couple of weeks ago and at least for me from Sweden there were no problems to buy as a student as long as I provide a copy of my student card. Just a pity they don't have models with i7 and discrete graphics. Anyone know if those ones will be available as campus models?
-

This has got to be one of the slowest roll-outs by Lenovo of a new machine. News of the T440s "coming soon" first broke here and on all the tech blogs in early July and here we are in early September still waiting. At this rate it'll be 2014 before anyone can buy a T440p
Just another example of this increasingly annoying tech trend of strategic leaks or fake "launches" months before actual availability. -
Thought this was one the fastest. There were no leaks of the machine. It just sudddenly appeared. The t431s I think was announced since last fall. Was shown in January at one of those electronic conventions and then became available in April. If you look at the beginning of this thread there was a consensus that this machine was coming out on December and probably receiving late December January.
-
I just talked to one of the reps and he said this model will be released in first or second week of September,
-
Reps in the past have said anything from late august to october.
-
I know, you can't trust them any more, I want to get my hands on this machine asap
-
-
17 hours of battery life? Either they, or us, are interpreting the '6 hours with standard 3-cell battery' WAYY wrong.
-
Typical of fluffer tech blogs.
-
I have been reading this thread for awhile now and I am excited for the release of the T440s. I didn't care to join the forum and comment but after seeing all the annoying comments, I want to make some blunt points for people.
1) This is suppose to be like an ultrabook. It is made to be slim and portable. This is why there is a ultra low power CPU and 4GB of RAM is on the motherboard. Go get a T440 if you want the mobile CPU and the ability to have 2 slot for RAM.
2) The screen is a matte IPS screen and if you get touch, it will use Gorilla glass instead.
3)Again, stop complaing about how the T440s is not a high powered laptop. It is suppose to be like a Mac Book Air. It however will use just the HD4600 graphic and not HD5000 or higher and there is a chance the i7 model can have a 730M like the i7 version of the S4301.
4) Stop posting what the "reps" said about release date since they don't know and it adds nothing to the thread
5) I know many people don't like the new trackpad... err clickpad. Just understand that many people demand a bigger clickpad because they don't use the trackpoint so Lenovo tried to compromise.
6) The two batteries combine are 46 watt hours which should give 8 hours easily if compared to the mac book and account for the higher res display.
Here is the collection of reviews and information that can be confirmed about the T440s.

Anyways, I am excited to buy this laptop the day it comes out. I plan on using it for college and as my main computer. If I need more computing power, I can always use my school desktop. I plan on changing out the HDD and putting in my 256 Samsung 840 SSD and replacing the RAM with a 8GB stick for a total of 12GB RAM. I will be purchasing the Ultra Dock so I can attach my two IPS monitor to it via Displayport. This laptop should make the most versatile machine as it can be very portable and I can have a real workstation at home. Anyways, I will continue to read and hear what you guys have to say. -
Really disappointing that they didn't make FHD an option on the T440. What if I want a standard voltage processor AND high resolution? I guess I will have to go i7 on the T440s...
-
What is this? The Verge article seems to imply that the base $1149 T440s comes with an i7 and a touchscreen. Is this true?
-
@arltep
Yeah that confused me as well. If that's true that is awesome. It also implied the standard touch screen would be FHD.
@Yuxie
Even the Lenovo press release states that 17 hours are possible so who knows at this point. Would be remarkably convenient if it actually achieved even half of that in the real world.
One thing that is a bummer is that apparently these devices will be available at the END of October. That is a little bit frustrating but I am willing to wait. -
The base model is $1150! And already very high end! Good job Lenovo! I'm very excited!Lenovo's new ThinkPads have smaller bodies, bigger trackpads, and limitless battery life Lenovo's new ThinkPads have smaller bodies, bigger trackpads, and limitless battery life | The Verge

Reading by the latest article of Engadget, it implied that there wouldn't be a discreet graphics card for the US version of T440s - is this true?

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Probably so they can have Windows 8.1 preinstalled. -
And they are going to release it at the end of October, what a shame...
