I find that hard to believe and wonder if The Verge got it wrong. Why would Lenovo offer FHD on the T440s and the X240 and not on the T440? Or maybe that is reserved for the T440p (although no mention of that model in the article)

I feel like unless Engadget has more information they didn't link to they're reading too much into the press release. It doesn't say anything about touchscreen FHD being standard either. My guess is that eventually the T440 might get a FHD option but might not launch with it.

End of October makes me sad :-(

From the latest articles it seems those hoping the T440 would give them what the T440s is missing will be disappointed. You'll have to wait for the T440p.

End of October? Sigh. Might as well wait for my current batteries to die until I upgrade. Wonder what happens first. :D

End of October is probably too long for me. If you were not going to buy the t440s, what would you buy?

If the Lenovo press release is correct (and why wouldn't it be), it looks like there is no true successor to the T430s: a thinner, lighter, full-power notebook. The T440s and T440 will both include only ULV Haswell processors, which means an "upgrade" from the T430s to the T440s (or T440) actually results in a system with lower performance.

This. sucks. I've been a new ThinkPad buyer at release time every year for years, but this year, they really don't have anything to offer me. Unless the T440p comes out with a similar size/weight profile to the T430s, I'm going to be looking at other brands.

The Lenovo press release is confusing to me. It says both the T440s and T440 and the same thickness, and the only differentiating factors mentioned are that the T440s gets a FHD screen while the T440 gets an "optional" smart card reader and touch display. Does that really account for the $250 difference in starting price ($1149 vs $899)? I highly doubt it. I guess we'll have to wait another month to find out.

And don't even get me started about the ThinkVision LT2934z monitor. I was excited about a 21:9 monitor for a minute until I saw it was only 1080p. What's up with screen resolutions these days? We seem to be going backwards.

I looked at that based on an earlier comment of yours, but I don't think I can live with the short battery life.

It's 2560x1080 though, how is that going backwards? That's the same resolution every other 21:9 monitor uses. To me it's a useless niche because two 1080p monitors cost half as much and have more pixels, but that's just what it is.

It's the loss of vertical real estate that always bugs me when I see "new" HD monitors that max out at 1080p. If this thing was at least 1200 vertically (like my current 24" monitor) then I might have been interested (price aside).

Hey guys, if I get the T440S with just the integrated gfx card, will I be able to get a dock for the laptop that can run two 2560x1440 monitors(dell u2713hm's with dp port)? Or will I need to get a laptop with a dedicated card to be able to push 2x that res from a dock while using its own monitor as well?

Yes you would be able to as long as you are using displayport on the ultra dock (only dock that supports two external monitor). Intel IGP supports 3 monitor.

Hey it is nice to see. A lenovo rep said that the T440s is coming out in mid september and the T440 is in October. Amazing to hear that battery life could be 17 hours with the extended. I will be happy with 8-10 with the two 3-cells.

One important thing I noticed is that in pictures particularly Lenovo's website/lenovo provided, they make the T440s and T431s look so thick. This laptop is thin. Not MBA and Sony thin but it's thin. No on could call it thick. Just wanted to point that out to those who have never seen a T431s in person.

So everyone is saying October release for the X240 and the T440...

Does anyone know if that is the likely case for the W540 as well? I'm looking at the placeholder page on the Lenovo site and drooling...

Also, is there some sort of "event" (a-la IFA Trade Show) at which we can expect these devices to be properly unveiled with all the specs? I'm not up on all these events other than hearing about them on Engadget or Gizmodo...

The leaked roadmap showed some laptops (T440s, x240s) will be available before October...the dates I saw were Sept 13th and Oct 18th...W540 possibly available on October 18th...all we can do is wait. I doubt lenovo will have an actual unveiling for their business-oriented laptops...but yes, I'm sure they'll show up at some trade shows soon (i.e. before Christmas :D)

Ah. Alright. Thanks! I wasn't sure if there was a special event, or whether they would just slowly trickle out randomly. I guess it's the latter.
So I suppose all I can really do is keep checking the W540 page until more specifications show up. This all sucks because I will likely be starting a new job within the month which will require me to get a new laptop, and it looks like my deadline will be juuuuust shy of when the W540 will be released :(

PC WORLD says September. I always scoffed at people who say "I spoke to a Lenovo Rep" and they said "insert date" as that was usually months away. Well here goes. I spoke to 3 different reps this weekend (Friday & Saturday) they said mid-september. In light of the reports today, where the article said "end of October" I got scared. I live chatted with a rep again and said, I understand the T440s is coming out in September and the T440 is out in October correct? He said you are correct. So......hopefully the T440s is out in September. No matter what everything will be available in October. I want to receive mine by the end of October. Not ordering it then. But all we can do is wait. At this point I am curious about the 6 cell battery life.

    Says September.

I'm not sure how valid that PC World article is. For one, it lists the price as $1049, when it should be $1149. Also, the official statement by Lenovo points towards an end-of-October release.

Of course, I want this laptop to get to my door as soon as possible as well.

    T440 vs. T440s:
    - T440 is thicker, bigger and heavier
    - T440 lacks the rubber lip around the display (instead it uses "classical" rubber bumpers)
    - T440 has only 2 USB ports
    - T440 has the GT 620M instead the 630M optional
    - T440 has 1366x768 and 1600x900 display, the T440s has 1600x900 and 1920x1080 display (the last one IPS)

The T440 is a cheaper, more budget-friendly version of the T440s (it also could have been named "T440si", but Lenovo dropped the i-suffix). T440p is the succesor of the T430 and a classic notebook rather than an Ultrabook. That means:
    - Better CPUs (Full voltage)
    - More RAM
    - Much thicker and heavier
    - DVD-Drive / Ultrabay
    - No internal battery
    - No touchscreen
    etc.

The T440p is not yet announced.

    In short:
    - T440s: Premium T UltraBook, the thinnest and lightest, most mobile T-Series

    - T440: Average T UltraBook, much cheaper, propably the best selling model in companies in the future

    - T440p: Classical Notebook,
with DVD drive, full-voltage CPUs and more ports

I think you are correct :
    - Successor of T431s is T440s (both are ultrabook around 1,5kg / 3 pounds)
    - Successor of T430s is T440 (weight of T440 is about same as T430s - difference is T440 has ULV CPU)
    - Successor of T430 will probably be T440p (full voltage CPU).

You are wrong about the battery. Lenovo is trying to simplify its battery line because of the use of power bridge technology. If all laptops have internal + removable batteries, this will allow anyone to hotswap a battery without powering down. The internal battery is also easy to remove but requires a screwdriver.

This is probably a stupid question but is there any chance that you can install a dedicated graphics card yourself in the t440s? I mean if you wont be able to get hold of a model with the Geforce 730m.

It will NEVER be settled. LOL Not until Lenovo actually releases the laptops. If you Really need to know or need assurance for purchase decisions just go to the AMERICAN Lenovo site and ask a rep. And give a leading question like, the T440s is coming in September and the T440 is coming in October? Each time I got the answer yes, just don't know the exact estimates.

    1) How hot does the unit get?
    2) What is the battery life like?
    3) Do you have a dock for the T440s?
    4) Is the unit ever loud?

    Thanks for your answers.

First of all, don't try using it under Linux. It will be a disaster. At least until we get better drivers. For now, Windows is the way to go.

As for the Trackpad itself, it's pretty good. The nice and smooth glass surface is a joy to use, it's more than big enough and clicking is fine as well. Not too different from a typical Clickpad. The Trackpoint however, has become worse due to the integrated buttons. It's usable, no doubt, but not as good as it was with dedicated buttons. You never know on which trackpoint button your finger is currently on, the buttons are way to wide, you will probably break your thumb trying to do a left or right click. It takes allot of getting used to and even then, it just isn't the same.

So it's a yay for the touchpad and a boo for the trackpoint.

    1) It stays very cool. Not a single area on the unit got even close to warm. Basically as if it had been off all the time. (it wasn't, I was running a live Linux!)
    2) Couldn't test that. Sorry.
    3) It's not available yet.
    4) I thought it didn't have a fan. After checking the HMM it does seem to have one. Couldn't hear it even though I was using a live Linux! I think it was off all the time!
