I am owner of 14'' Elitebook 8440w, and keyboard is very good, best from all laptops I used to have (haven't tried lenovo though), build quality is second to none - my laptop is still working and for over 3 years it has been on 60h/week, has military grade testing, i dropped it few times and it also survived 30mph motorcycle accident while in the backpack. I think aesthetics are personal, I like the hp business styling.
I am bit confused - why both ZBook14 and 840 in hp range?
-
Yep agreed with cuba_guy. HP elitebooks are good. I used to have a really old one. Keyboard is good, trackpoint is good. Build is good. Similar to thinkpads with similar age. I think they are slightly heavier and the battery life wasn't that good. Good laptop though if you are comparing build quality, keyboard and trackpoint.
-
that Elitebook looks too much like a Macbook Pro/Retina.

1+ Right. And we take a look at the coming Elitebook Folio 940 G1 (the successor to the Elitebook Folio 9470), the "high end" version of the Elitebook 840 G1, we can see where HP is headed:
No TrackPoint at all, more Macbook-style hinge etc.
A very good question. They are releasing 3 Business Ultrabooks with very similar specs - ZBook 14, Elitebook 840 and Elitebook 940. The only real difference is the GPU in the ZBook, which is stronger.
Instead, they should have kept at least one full-powered 14" model like Lenovo. But now, it appears that the only Elitebooks and ZBooks with Full-Voltage CPUs are the ZBook 15 and the ZBook 17.nicolaim likes this. -
You wouldn't qualify the ZBook 14 as a T440x competitor?
-
BTW - can this offer of $1100 for fully equipped 840 G1 be real? What can be the price of backlit keyboard with trackpoint, as this cheap model does not seem to have it?
-
Well, that wording is weird then. It says Windows 7 is "available through downgrade rights." If Windows 7 is installed, shouldn't it say that Windows 8 is available through upgrade rights? Whatever.
Thanks. -
Yes, of course the ZBook 14 is a competitor, but only to the T440 s, no to the T440 p. It wins performance wise against the T440s (but not when it comes to the battery), but not against the T440p:
- T440p: Up to full-powered 37w Core i7-CPUs (i7-4600M), and very likely also Quad-Core (the lower L440 also gets Quad-Core) - ZBook 14: Low-Voltage 15w Core i5 and i7 (max. Core i7-4600U), which is the same as the T440s, but is blown away by the T440p
- Both have 16 GB of RAM max.
- T440p has the ability to use 3 SSDs / 2 SSDs and one HDD / 1 SSD and two HDDs, because it has Ultrabay, an 42mm M.2 Slot and the normal 2.5" HDD/SSD slot - ZBook 14 can use 2 SSDs or one HDD and one SSD at the same time
- I guess the FirePro M4100 in the ZBook 14 should win against the GT 730M in the T440p, but they are not far away
It is just a weird decision to make the ZBook 14 an UltraBook. They will have two models (Elitebook 840 and 940) which will cover this market, so why didn´t they just make the ZBook 14 a smaller ZBook 15 with Quad-Core, an Multibay etc.? Instead, they killed their 14" Workstation line. What are the benefits of the ZBook 14 over the EliteBook 840 G1, other than the faster GPU? -
This config is still up and you can add it to your cart. Excellent deal. If I was in need of a laptop, this would be it. Not sure about the screen though but it seems to be IPS due to it being called UWVA. Combine that with docking connector and DP port. You cannot get this kind of laptop with these specs for cheaper. All I can say is wow.

AnandTech posted first impressions of the Gigabyte P34G
AnandTech | Gigabyte P34G First Impressions: A Thin and Light Gaming Notebook
They like it, but the battery life is obviously poor. -
I had some trouble adding the $1099 840 g1 to the cart (weird DNS error), but clicking on "Configure your Laptop PC" then on the "Recommended" tab gives you a page that works. HP's Small & Medium Business Online Store
I prefer to not buy anything before reading reviews, so I added it to cart, and near the end of the checkout you can save it as a quote, which is good for 7 days. Hopefully they don't raise this price.
Edit: Should I instead buy this now, and sell it if I don't like it (maybe for a higher price)? -
Their website is pretty awful, finding and sorting anything is pretty nightmarish.
Am I the only one that's noticed that something is wrong with their pricing? -
Some dude on slickdeals already posted it on the front page. I wouldn't be surprised if almost all these orders were canceled.
-
Yup, they're getting cancelled already.
People even called in to ask if it'd be honored. They got a fat "no." -
That's not a negative and I think Lenovo has done the same thing with an Ideapad as well. At the end, Apple doesn't have a monopoly on a black screen with a grey bottom with black keys and buttonless trackpad (unless of course they have a stupid patent on that
). I think the HP looks nice.
-
if i want a MBP or MBA i would get original one.
-
But this way everybody can think you got a cheap knockoff.
-
Nice picture!
For me, it seems that the T440s screen is better than the one used in the Zenbook...
-
it really depends.
the zenbook is whiter and the colors in general are a little bit better
but the thinkpad is not so glossy and in your face.
maybe i could some how calibrate that bit i really dont care.
both are wonderful displays.
btw with kernel 3.12rc3 and tlp i could get it down to about 4w
i hope this will improve with newer kernel and newer driver
-
anyone have idea when its going to be released in Europe ? My laptop died and I need new one ASAP

With that smile at the end of your post I suspect you broke it conveniently and now a new ThinkPad is justified

I think a Zbook 14 would be better.
Or if you want more power , you get can a Dell Precision M4800 for about the same price.
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellst...ision-m4800-workstation&c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04 -
Thats a bit expensive. Where did you configured it?
It should be cheaper when Lenovo starts to offer them through their Website.
@del_psi,
Well, give us a reason why, if one does not need the bettter GPU in the ZBook.
-
The Zbook 14 supports 2 x 8GB modules.

Price for Lenovo varies wildly between regions, especially with all the coupons and discounts counted in. In Canada, for example, Lenovos are often 70% or less of similarly stuffed Dell M series.
I'd be really surprised to see T440s with HDD priced significantly above $1000 in the US, especially a few months after release. -
I got my W530 last year for under $800 before taxes and that included the 1080P screen , backlit keyboard , fingerprint reader , etc.
A comparable M class machine would have been only $1200 at the time (coupon + sale) that I was choosing between the M4700 and the W530.
The M4700 came standard with a 3 year NBD warranty while my W530 did not.
And yes , I'm talking about brand new laptops , not used ones.
I try to check every possible discount before I buy any computer. -
For what ever reason, if you navigate to the T440s page manually or append ?#customize to your link an eCoupon shows up: JPNIGHT1003
When I tried checking out with it, I got an error telling me it wasn't compatible with my shopping cart. The coupon should take ~$350 USD off the price.
I suspect the coupon is not suppose to be showing up on the T440s page.
Regardless, the price is a bit high. Especially for a model without an SSD.
Adding a GT 730M is going to be incredibly expensive, that's for sure. -
No i7s yet...
-
Its ok only people like you and lead_org would dismiss the HP as a cheap Apple knockoff. Wow black screen with silver base = Apple knockoff lol
-
I'm not a Dell fan, but here's another system in the T440s/T440p range:
AnandTech | Dell Updates 2013 Line of XPS Laptops with Ultra-High Resolution Displays
XPS 15
15.6" touch IPS 1920x1080 or 3200x1800 gorilla glass NBT
Aluminum chassis, carbon fibre base
i5-4200H (2.8-3.4GHz dual-core, 47W TDP, HD Graphics 4600)
i7-4702HQ (2.2-3.2GHz quad-core, 37W TDP, HD Graphics 4600) with GeForce GT 750M 2GB
Up to 16 GB RAM (2 SO-DIMMs)
32 GB SSD cache should be replaceable with a mSATA or M.2 SSD
372mm x 254mm x 8-18mm
2.01 kg / 4.44 lbs
3 USB 3.0, 1 USB 2.0, mini-DisplayPort, HDMI, Ethernet, headset combo jack, card reader
AC WiFi
NFC
61 Wh battery (91 Wh with 512 GB mSATA/M.2 SSD option) -
It's 15", 0,5 kg heavier and doesn't have trackpoint.
-
The t440p will have a 100Wh battery ThinkPad T440p > Lenovo Quick Pick. Though the standard will probably be 57Wh ThinkPad T440p > Lenovo Quick Pick . I guess there will be an inner battery too, probably 23.5Wh.
-
No, there is no internal battery for the T440p. See the HMM. So it seems 100 Wh is max. for the T440p, 5 Wh more than for the T440s.
-

I never said it was a cheap knockoff. In fact I have no current opinion on the HP. I might even have considered it as an alternative for my needs if it only had a middle trackpoint button. I only said people could think you had a cheap knockoff based solely on looks.
-
I love the T440s for $1,349.99. It has FHD, fingerprint, 4GB RAM, HDD, and a backlight keyboard. I want to add my own RAM and my own SSD since it is way cheaper. 3 year warranty is awesome too.
-
The cheapest one: $1129: HD+ i5-4200U 4 GB 500 GB + 16 GB cache web cam BT fingerprint AC no backlit kbd 1 year wty
Second cheapest $1199: as above but with 3 year wty
Third cheapest $1279: as above but with i5-4300U vPro and backlit kbd
Cheapest FHD $1349: i5-4300U vPro 4 GB 500 GB + 16 GB cache web cam BT fingerprint AC backlit kbd 3 year wty
Cheapest FHD Touch $1499: same as above
Cheapest i7 HD+ $1639: i7-4600M vPro 4 GB 256 GB SSD etc, but there's a 180 GB SSD model without a price
Cheapest i7 FHD $no price: as above with 180 GB SSD (I'm guessing $16xx.)
Cheapest i7 FHD Touch $1699: i7-4600M vPro 4 GB 128 GB SSD etc
And then things go a little crazy!
A bunch of systems over $2000, all the way to $3049 for i7 FHD Touch 8 GB 256 GB. And I thought Apple was expensive, hehe. I don't know what they're smoking at Lenovo...
No mention of NFC. Weren't some models supposed to have it? -
Too bad they don't have an equivalent i7 without SSD...
-
The cheapest FHD with an 17 is over $2,000? The FHD is the IPS equivalent right? (1920x1080?)
If that's the case then bye bye lenovo, I'll go get a rMPB for cheaper. Jeez. -
Surprisingly, this (20AQ005SUS) ends up being competitive since this model is available from CostCentral for $1253. Though I don't need the processor upgrade so that $50-70 ends up being a waste. Additionally, all the pre-configs only come with a 3-cell battery. Since the T431s has them standard, this is assuming Lenovo doesn't 'charge' for bluetooth, fingerprint, camera, backlight. This could work well for some people if resellers get stock before Lenovo starts shipping.
If you build with Lenovo:
Starting price $1149
Minimum 25% discount available
FHD $100 (this is worst case)
Win 8 Pro $50
3yr depot warranty $100
i5-4300U $70
7% tax
$1264 from Lenovo. -
Where do I find out about the discounts?
-
Go to Lenovo Barnes and Noble Gold. It's 22% off for the T431s right now. You can talk them down slightly below that. If anyone waits for Black Friday, maybe even close to 30% off.
-
ThinkPads aren't necessary with it if you only get 30%.
If the discount is only 30% , I think there are other companies which offer superior products for not much more since other companies have discounts as well.
Lenovo is not the only company that discounts their laptops.
The Precision class from Dell can be cheaper than the T class from Lenovo if find the right discount. -
Great, you should buy one of those superior products. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
-
Yes. I'm sure Fujitsu , Dell , and HP will appreciate my business more.
My next tablet with probably be a Fujitsu and my next workstation will either be an HP or Dell.
If I wanted an Ultrabook type laptop , the M3800 offers me more than the T440s does. -
I used to be crazy about ThinkPads but ThinkPads aren't special anymore.
Of course they are still better than the bargain bin laptops you can buy at Bestbuy or Walmart for $300 but that's not a fair comparison.
