Can anyone comment on the quality/durability of the LCDs used on thinkpads? I just had a pretty bad experience with a Dell with half the screen going out.

the only LCD failure i had was on a T21 after about 6 years.

they lasted but they weren't the best quality.

if you can upgrade, the IPS flexview screen option for the thinkpad is the best screen on the planet. (15" , 4:3 aspect ratio only)

Have a T20 in the area here. (Not mine.) Screen is still working good. (I guess it was never a real good screen compared to todays displays, but it's still working (in antagonism to the optical drive, 1.44", battery) :D

    ّFrom BBC:

    PC world Mareket share

    Hewlett Packard: 17.6%
    Dell: 13.6%
    Acer: 6.8%
    Lenovo/IBM: 6.3%
    Toshiba: 4.1%

This is really sad. Lenovo is the best but it is too good for most of the costumers.

Lenovo is known not to have popular consumer machines, at least not in America. Good consumer notebooks are where the money is at, that's why HP is overtaking Dell. HP's dv line of notebooks look very attractive.

I think I'm gonna buy a D630 in mid June, the draw backs of the T61 are just too big compared to the D630. The longer warranty and higher student discount (Dell's 12% compared to Lenovo's 5%) make the Latitudes very attractive.

Now I just hope the WXGA+ screen is alright when we see more reviews.

No, there's little money in consumer notebooks. HP and Dell are doing terribly financially. HP fired their CEO. Both those companies are dogs and investment analysts hate them.

Uranium and oil is where the money has been. Exxon's profits have been disgusting. It makes more than many entire nations do.

Funny how Dell and HP sell the most notebooks, but ppl hate their service.
Some HP's look really sharp when new, but they scratch easily and usually look awful within 2 years (assuming it's still working that long).

I think fujitsu's look good and they tend to last. but the hp and dells are plenty cheaper.

It's sad to have seen the once-proud HP, which used to be known for topnotch quality, be reduced to a company of cheats, crooks, thieves, and spies... churning out cheap unreliable products across their product line.

Today, the HP brand is to be avoided whether in cameras, computers or printers (something they were legendary for previously).

What a shame! Just my opinion (and some others' too)

Likewise! I was having the same dilemma here in Portugal. Can't understand why the huge difference in the price. I was going to buy two laptops, so I thought of flying to the USA to get them. Now, with the "out of center LCD" issue, i think I'll stay and buy the D630.

I have been using a Dell notebook since last 4 years and after reading opinion and reviews about Thinkpads on this site, I was tempted to go for a Thinkpad this time. The fact is that Lenovo is not at all interested to promote its Thinkpad series in India. It is selling outdated configurations at very high prices. I mailed to atleast 10 dealers requesting them for a quote. Not one replied back. I went to a store to get the feel of a Thinkpad, came back dissapointed as the battery of the notebook had drained off completely and there was no charger available to charge it..!!

T61 is not available here. Even if it was, it would have costed atleast double as compared to D630. In anycase the experience I had with Lenovo, I would not have gone for T61 even if it was available at the same price as the D630.

I have ordered a D630 and I am told it has landed in India today and waiting for the custom clearance.. I should be getting it early next week.

How are you getting it so early? I ordered mine on the 21st of May and it won't be here until the 18th of June. I am in the US, if that makes any difference.

I actually ordered on 14th May and they processed the order on 22nd. The shipment date mentioned on Dell's Indian site was 21st May. Today I was informed that the system is awaiting custom clearance in India.

Well yes you are right, US customers have to wait a bit longer. Don't know why but it is strange..

According to the Dell rep I talked to, he said the shipping dates are extremely conservative estimates. We'll see how that works out, let me know what you think of your machine.

The point I was trying to make was that there could be a possibility that your system might be getting made in a factory where the production lines (for the new Latitudes) are not yet ready and hence the delay.

Anyway I hope you get your system at the earliest.

    Cheers :)

For everyone who lives outside the USA and Lenovo laptops are more expensive why don't you open an account at the UPS store and have them forward it too you once it arrives? Shipping will cost a bit more but you'll save on the price. For more info see: http://www.theupsstore.com/products/maiandpos.html

    intresting
it could be the case as thats where most of them are manufactured
ill be going to singapore and malaysia in 4 weeks so it would be intresting to see the prices there but i bet choice would be a bit limited as compared to that of the states and probably better than Dubai where i reside ATM

CNET and PC Mag have reviewed it and CNET seemed to GUSH over it. The screen brightness is the one thing that REALLY bothers me. The D630 is said to have a BEAUTIFUL screen.

Yes but didn't say anything about the T61 screen. Also, that review was released EXTREMELY quickly which makes me a little skeptical of validity. Kinda like it was rushed in order to be the first review.

I thought both reviews were terrible. CNET always gives random reviews. I never know which laptop they like because none of the editors agree on anything. The PC Mag review was just pointless. PC Mag claimed the T61 was better because it is more powerful. Well, if you compare a 2.4 GHz processor to a 2.0 GHz processor and an integrated graphics card to a dedicated graphics card, what do you expect? PC Mag should compare the same processor and equal video cards. Either compare the integrated video cards or the 135M to the 140M.

There are two things why I haven't ordered a D630 yet and I am thinking about a T61:

The D630 has only PCMCIA (expresscard 34 using a stupid adapter; USB expresscards only). That sucks, because Expresscard is the future

And because you can't choose for a dedicated graphics card.

That's why I am thinking of import a T61 from the US to the Netherlands, instead of getting a D630 here in my country.

A con is that the dockingstation of the T61 is more expensive, and that If I get a D630 I will have easier warranty and support and local friends with laptops from the same serie.

I had a D620 and thought the screen was terrible. I know that they've bumped up the brightness from 185 nits to 220 nits, so that should solve that problem.

That said, the keyboard and trackpoint on my T61 are vastly superior. Also, the T61 runs incredibly cool. I'm using on my lap right now and I still can't believe what a fantastic job they've done with the thermal properties. The D620 got pretty warm on the bottom front (near the LCD). Even the palm rests were slightly warm.

The T61 also seems pretty well built. Very solid. Weight, size, and form factor are pretty similar.

The LCD on the T61 is much better than the one I have on my D620. I'm very impressed with the T61 so far, but I've only had it since last Thursday (4 days).

Ok! here comes the new practical points that you can not find in any review. I hate laptops when they get warm. Since you have owned both D620 and T61, you made me think again. Although Dell people claim to solve the problems of D620 in D630, I am still suspicious.

T61 does NOT come with international warranty. T60 generally does.
T61 comes with shorter warranty too, usually.
That's one way they made it cheaper.

You can find out about intl warranty for sure by pluggin the 4-digit model number into the warranty web page at ibm.

And this is like what I wanted to hear:

    220nit, LG-Philips 42T0406 R N
    220nit, Samsung 13N7108 R N

This is it! screen is really bright (220 nits)! as bright as Dell D630 and since IMHO Thinkpads are built better and are more classy, I will go with T61.
