The Fn numpad is a bit awkward to use imho. I think that if they were to include a numpad, a good idea would be to make it semi-external and store it in the ultrabay.

I'll probably only buy the W530 if it has a numpad. I would have expected that most people shopping for a workstation notebook would want it.

Anyone think there is even a glimmer of hope for a W730?

The W700 series was ended because there wasn't enough demand. I doubt the market has changed enough that there suddenly is a ton of demand for a 17 inch workstation.

Whether people want a numpad probably depends on what their primary use for the notebook is. It's always nice to have options when possible.

I had a Mac (well, a lot of Macs), and a MBP is awful in terms of typing experience compared to a TP. I broke out an old Mac to use the optical drive, which is about the only time I use it now, and I could barely type on the damn thing. However, I will say the touchpad is still way better than my x220 especially when it comes to things like scrolling, which is the one function that I really miss from my MBPs that the nub can't really make up for. Otherwise, the keyboard/nub combination is much better than what the MBP offers.

I wouldn't mind a numpad either. When you are working with spreadsheets and the like, it makes a world of difference.

The chiclet keyboards on more modern MacBooks are pretty good. Not quite as much travel as a traditional Thinkpad keyboard, but still adequate.

I don't think there's no demand for 17" mobile workstations. If the W7** series didn't sell, it most certainly was because of the awful design decisions that went in it. HP and Dell (and Apple) don't seem to have a problem in selling professional 17" laptops.

    W701 dimensions = 16.14” x 12.2” x 1.59”
    MBP dimensions = 15.47" x 10.51" x .98"

Thickness was a killer. Hard to backpack a pizza box.

Does anyone know if the screen resolution of X230 will be "upgraded" back to 900 vertical resolution? That's what I have on X200s now and am considering an upgrade.

    Thanks!

It's doubtful since X was just redesigned last year. Chipset is likely the only change following Thinkpad convention.

Yes, but only for desktop CPUs. Notebook CPUs are coming out in June, so we should start seeing Lenovo's refresh in July.

According to Revised Ivy Bridge launch schedule confirmed there are i7 mobile quads coming in April. I have no idea how accurate their report is.

That mean the refresh will be around June. I just hope that Lenovo gave us more information about the upgrade that it will come with. I am hoping for a high resolution screen with IPS technology across the whole range of classic thinkpad line.

HD+ in a 12.5in screen is a bit higher than even the X200s dpi. I doubt Lenovo will will ever do it in that size. The smallest I'd guess is 13.1-13.3" like some ultrabook mfrs are doing including Lenovo's Yoga (1600x900 IPS). Maybe it'll be possible to put that screen in an X301?

Probably because they've threatened employees and any journalists with lawsuits should details be revealed. I'm sure a few IT managers know the details as well, Lenovo generally gives their biggest customers a preview of what's to come.

Not that any of this is different to the past, so it is odd there's not a single leaked picture or specs sheet.

Sony has hugely high DPI on their ultraportables....sure, they charge an arm and a leg for them, but at least there is the option :)

I considered the S series, but the screen gets similar reviews to that of the T420s... So having the ability to include an mSATA drive and lower weight pushed me in the T420s direction... I really wish there was a tell associated with improved displays in the HD+ 14 in variety... That alone would have made me wait for the new ones...

For me, I don't think the Edge series is a first line option yet. Not a fan of the 6 row chicklet... The specs look OK otherwise, but no i7 option is certainly a negative... I actually do heavy lifting with my laptops... Seems like the best Edge to date though...

    Finally some decent info!

W530 with Quadro 1100M and 2100M? That doesn't sound like Kepler (28nm) GPUs but more like minor updates to the current (40nm) 1000M and 2000M?

Does anybody know if the graphics card will be updated for the T430? I've been looking around and saw two new cards that would probably be used, the Nvidia NVS 5200M and 5400M, on Nvidia's website, but they're nowhere else at all.

This means we can expect the W530 to have a chiclet-style keyboard as well, doesn't it? Ugh.

Have the pros and cons of chiclet-keyboards been discussed somewhere? If one were really adverse to them, would buying the W520 now be the best move? What would you be giving up by not waiting?

Yes. I would expect that we will see chiclet in all new ThinkPads T/X/L/W.

The chiclet-keyboard in the X1 is good and even better than the classic keyboard of my L520.
