See if you can duplicate the problem on a different router that has a decent Internet connection. You need to find out if the issue is your router or your ThinkPad.

Yes. I am sitting trying all settings. I have removed and reinstalled drivers. I have never had a problem with any other device connected to my wireless. Purchased this D-Link one year ago exactly. Trying both on another router/connection is my next step. Thanks.
EDIT: Called Dlink, spent 45 min on phone - troubleshot everything. It's not the router....Last edited: Mar 26, 2015 -
Regardless of that, verify that the problem is still happening on that particular ThinkPad on a different router elsewhere that has a quality Internet connection.

My previous laptop was a great, but heavy, workhorse (Dell E6400), and my laptop bag reflects that. Now that I have a really wonderful X1, anybody have suggestions for a good-looking laptop case (briefcase or messenger bag style, either is fine): it needs to be able to hold the x1, charger, a small portable hdd, a passport, a small point&shoot camera and a couple of other small items (chewing gum, cellphone). Any thoughts?

Just bought a new router. Trend net TEW-812DRU AC1750 Dual Band Wireless. Will post findings
-
With my ASUS RT-AC66R router, the win 7 status for the 5Ghz connection is showing speed of 866.7Mbs
-
That did it. Both laptops are on the 5GHz network and getting 110Mbps all over the apartment.
Can't say enough about this new router, for $110. All of the others in this class are $200 to $350Attached Files:

Just ordered my G3 X1 Carbon with the i5-5300U, 8GB, 128GB SSD, QHD IPS (non-touch). Ordered a Crucial MX200 500GB SSD upgrade. My only concern with this product is the limited RAM but hoping that the fast read/write speeds of the MX200 helps this along.
I won't be using this other than initial setup as this will be a replacement for the wife's T520 (current spec in sig). Looking for something thinner and lighter than the T520 and the T520 will become my Win10 test machine.John George likes this. -
why do you need 16GB RAM?
Unless you do video editing then I see no reason for 16GB, and based on your T520 specs, you are not doing any video editing. -
I don't do video editing, but I need 16 GB on my work laptop where I program. this because I run big virtual servers with big database tables which I need in memory the whole time for accurate performance testing.
Can't answer for the other guy, just wanted to comment on the "only for video" stuff... -
Modern day browsers with 10's of tabs open crush RAM. While I don't fully need 16GB of RAM my usage is typically close to or just over 8GB. 64-bit Chrome is a serious memory hog.
-
No disrespect, but you should probably not do it on an ultra "bla bla" laptop...
-
I have the same issue with open tabs, but I don't believe 16GB will make any difference.
Changing your browsing habits will help you more...
-
At work I access several different internal site internal systems through the browser on multiple browsers (IE/Chrome). This plus several spreadsheets/office docs at a time drive my RAM usage. 8GB in my old Dell E6420 was limiting at times, but I was using a 7200 RPM platter HDD and I could feel when the page file was being hit.
Since the X1 will be a replacement for the T520 that my wife uses exclusively, surely you're not suggesting that I tell her how to use her computer.
It's always 20+ tabs in Firefox and IE no matter what I suggest.

Well, the W530 is portable. It can be configured with 32GB of RAM and use three SSD's in the chassis. If you need a bad ass portable virtualization machine, that's the one to use.
The X1 is mostly designed for Microsoft Office road warriors. -
A min of 16GB option should have been available, no excuses IMO really.
-
Thanks, but already have a bad ass 15" portable, I'm in the market for a extremely light 13" one. Curious what specs the Lavie Z will have as optipns once it becomes available...

I have been using X1 carbon 3rd gen for a month. I noticed one thing about the fan noise.
When it's on battery, the fan does not kick in often, i guess that's related to the cooling strategy set as "passive". It's very quiet in general.
However, i found that when it is plugged in, the fan kicks in frequently. Very weird thing is : if i leave the laptop untouched for a few minutes, the fan starts to kick in and making noise, and when I'm back to work on it, the fan stops.... Although i understand now the strategy is "active", but i feel it's weird, is there any background usage when the laptop is in idle state, so that the fan works "actively" ?
Do you guys have same issue ? Thanks !! -
I just bought the model with the 14.0" FHD (1920 x 1080) with WWAN and after reading the forums I am regretting it. Is it worth it for me to cancel the order and pay the extra $113 for the 14.0" QHD (2560x1440) IPS with WWAN?
-
Also, when scaling down to 1920 x 1080 is there any issues?
-
I've read a couple reports of keys popping off and the entire keyboarded needing to be replaced. Is this the case with all of the latest thinkpads or just the x1? Were previous x1's like this?
-
yes, the QHD IPS screen upgrade is well worth the money. Personally I think it would be a mistake to go with TN panel, and I've used both of them.
I haven't had any scaling issues, although one rather antiquated program I use is pretty small in the native resolution and a bit fuzzy in the scaled-down version. If you aren't using applications that haven't been updated in 10 years though, this shouldn't be a problem!desm0nd likes this. -
I ended up geting the QHD IPS for $65 extra. Thanks for the reply

I LOVE the screen on my IPS touch, amazing quality and resolution just TOO damn dim...
-
Yeah, having used the Gen2 for a bit, I purposely avoided the touch version and the "30 nit penalty". The screen on my non-touch is just bright enough, about equal to my old X230 (with much better resolution obviously), but unless I'm in the dark it's always cranked up the entire way.

Has anybody downgraded to Windows 7 on this? I wasn't interested in running Windows 8, and Windows 10 beta isn't yet approved for use on my company VPN... so i downgraded. I'm finding that it is VERY VERY SLOW to resume from sleep/hibernate. Fast when booting from scratch, and fast once I get into Windows.... just VERY slow to resume. Anyone else?
-
desm0nd, how did you get the upgrade only for $65 extra? I also plan to order an upgraded display. The listed fee for the QHD IPS upgard is $150 extra. Even with 30% discount it would still cost $105. Thanks.
-
I'm regretting getting 8.1 standard. Seems upgrading to pro is a huge challenge and Lenovo is no help
-
if you have pro key ,just use windows update to load your new pro key, then you will be easily upgrade to 8.1 pro
Is there anybody can share their color profile? I feel my screen some yellowish with x1 carbon 2015 just received from lenovo. thanks. -
I purchased it through the IBM EPP portal : https://shop.lenovo.com/ibmeppfriendca/ca/en/laptops/ (Password is FNDEPP)
My total was $1409, after tax around $1590-1600. I did the live chat, and tried 2 times with different support staff to get a coupon/discount but they said that EPP portal was the best prices and they couldn't offer me any discounts. So I ordered it anyways.
Then the next morning I wanted to try one more time, so I got Sarah on chat who said she could offer me the machine for $1502 taxes in, so I would save an extra 90-100$. I cancelled my first order and reordered with her using a different email and my work number. I basically told her that it was going to be a work laptop and my budget was $1500, my boss is cheap and I couldn't go over it and it was between this and a Dell XPS, and if she could get me it for near $1500 I would buy it right now. -
Apologies if this has already been asked, but does anyone know if any brick and mortar retail stores sell this? I'd really like to see it in person before I buy, particularly the QHD touch screen.
-
Thanks.
-
Can someone who owns the QHD version advise whether the screen scales down to 1080p nicely? Or does it get blurry? Thanks in advance!
-
It's not bad, far from perfect but I could work with it. Would like some shortcut key to change between full resolution and FHD.
-
Thanks for your feedback. Any chance you could upload a few screenshots to show what it looks like?
I would like a touchscreen version but in New Zealand they only offer touch on QHD screens. -

Not the best images, sorry. -
Thanks so much. From what I can see both 1080p and QHD look great!
Would you be able to take screenshots using Window's built-in snipping tool rather than a camera? Sorry to be a pain, but you are of great help +1 rep. -
It looks like Intel's Skylake-U (probably what the X1 would use) will be released this August, you figure OEMs like Lenovo will get their hands on them soon after. Any historical precedent to indicate Lenovo would do a mid-cycle Skylake refresh? Or would they most likely wait until next January when the 4th gen X1 is released to include the Skylake processor?
Also, 1TB M.2 SSDs have been "available" to OEMs for a few months, any chance the X1 will incorporate the 1TB drives in the near future?
Thanks! -
-
Awesome. I can't see too much of a difference, which is good news. So it does scale to 1920 x 1080?
-
Are you looking for the screen actually running at 1920x1080 or the screen running at 2560x1440 but with Windows scaling set at 125% so the size of items are as if they were 1080p?
If it's the former, then screenshots will do you no good and you should look at the photos sent. If it's the latter, you should make that clear to sveintore, as they are sending pictures of the screen resolution set to 1920x1080. -
Can someone that has either the base 1080p model, or the QHD one without touch do me a huge favour? I'm really sensitive to flickering light and machines that use PWM and there's a super easy test someone can do for me to see if these machines use PWM.
If you can open your browser and go to Google, then set your brightness to something like 20%, making sure the background is white, then open the camera on your phone and just hold it like 6" or so from the screen, far enough that you can focus on text etc. Does it look normal, other than possibly being grainy etc, or do you see visible scan lines or flickering happening?
A great example of what you should see (or hopefully not!) is here . In this video it's caused by him plugging in the power adapter, but if this display has PWM, normally what would happen is you'd see it flickering similar to in this video through your phone, but once brightness is over 50-60% (and definitely 100%) it should virtually go away and just look normal.
If you see those lines or flicker or scanlines on your phone, then it uses PWM and I get severe migraines from it (I use my displays around 20% as I can't handle bright lights), but if it doesn't then I should be golden. Lenovo changed their return policy to have a 15% restocking fee now so hate to buy it and find out it gives me headaches. Thanks so much! -
I just ordered one a couple of days ago with upgraded screen, 5500u and pcie 512gb ssd. Looking forward to try out this laptop and specially the keyboard and track point.
I'm going to be installing Arch Linux as my primary system, but have dual boot (If I can figure that out) Windows, but hope to actually avoid using it.
Lee M, if no one else has answered before I receive mine I'll test that for you. It's going to take a while though as thinkpad apparently take longer to produce. -
I should be getting my X1 carbon on the 29th. I got the lowest SSD 128 gb, looking to upgrade it myself to a 500 or 512 gb ssd. Do you guys have any suggestions on which SSD to purchase?
-
Thanks that would be awesome!!!
Does anyone know if the TN panel used in this is similar to the first gen? I had bought 2 of them when it came out and returned them because the screen was so insanely blue and just looked awful to me, something always seemed off. Wondering if these are the same, as other TN panels I've bought didn't have that issue. -
