Yes, fully aware it's SATA and not PCIe. But it was hard to argue with the $200 price point for the space given I wouldn't see any real world performance benefit. Just looking to provide performance per $$ comparison to the other two benchmarks.

I bought a 500Gb SSD from NewEgg to replace the one I have right now from lenovo, but was wondering if there are any instructions to opening the laptop beyond unscrewing the seven screws? If so, where can I find those instructions? it will be the first time I'm updating a laptop and want to make sure I don't bugger anything up.... :)

Yes, it's only SATA but good consistent read/write speeds.

    So to summarize:
    SATA 500MB/sec
    PCIe 2.0 1,000-1,200MB/sec +$250
    PCIe 3.0 1,500-1,600MB/sec +$50

Pretty much. If you want to pay the premium for a significant speed boost, go for it. The vast majority of users on a dual-core CPU ultrabook will not be doing anything that benefits from PCI-Express SSD speeds, despite being significantly faster by the numbers, however.

So who will benefit from this speed boost?
I have the X1 gen2 and my main consideration to buy the gen3 is the SSD speed.
I have the same results on my gen2 as the guy above with his SATA.

I am interested in X1 Carbon 3rd Gen. I know that it has Synaptics Touchpad.

Does it come with "Momentum" feature for the touchpad? This feature allow the cursor to continue moving in a direction like I'm pushing a ball. If I push the ball softy, it will continue moving a little bit after I lift my finger from the touch pad. If I push the ball harder, it will continue moving faster and further.

Could anybody with X1 Carbon 3rd Gen check it for me please? Thank you.

X1 2nd Gen has it so I assume 3rd Gen has it as well.
You can find it in the TouchPad settings -> Advanced -> Advanced (yes, twice) -> Motion - > Momentum.

powercfg /energy reports the following error:

Platform Power Management Capabilities: PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) Disabled PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in this computer.

Any idea what's causing this? I was getting another error associated with the fingerprint reader until I disabled its indicator light from within Lenovo's Fingerprint Pro software.

Could anybody check for me if their computer supports Connected Standby (InstantGo)?

I did a clean install of Windows immediately after I got it, and when I run "powercfg /a" I'm seeing that Connected Standby isn't supported.

If my current T410s holds out, I might just wait for the Mark 4 version next January. Hopefully, the next X1C will incorporate a 1TB m.2 option, 12 or even 16GB RAM, and a brighter screen with the acclaimed Skylake processor.

This post, buried way back on the 21st page of this thread, has hit the nail on the head for how I feel.
I am a 1st gen X1C user upgrading to a 3rd gen X1C (courtesy of the amazing slickdeal, I obtained an i5 with 8GB RAM QHD non-touch for just under a grand before tax).

The screen dEfinitely has a yellow-ish hue versus the more blue-ish 1st gen model (I hadn't realized how used to the other color scheme I had gotten). As a result, everything felt muted and dull... however, after using it for 2 days, I've slowly adjusted to the color scheme, so that I can live with. The brightness level definitely is weak, I agree with av676 that the brightest 3rd gen setting is about 80% for the 1st gen X1C. Again... something I could probably live with...

    However...
any other owners having the below issues?

    - trackpad not properly registering a three-finger click (I can duplicate this issue to a T; basically, it registers as a two-finger click in the center of the trackpad and only properly registers a three-finger click closer to the top of the trackpad); very disappointing as I use a three-finger click all the time as a middle-button to open links in new tabs
    - right border missing in Chrome (appears as a very thin white line, most noticeable when viewing full-screen video)

I tried everything (tinkered with mouse settings, googled the Chrome issue) for both issues and haven't found any solutions.
I am debating whether to return this or exchange for a new one.

Three finger click works fine here, all over the pad. (never used it before, but tested it a bit now).

I have a new FHD and my QHD here now. There are absolutely differences between the screens when both set at 1080p. The FHD one is crisper, and you can see the pixels. The QHD is a bit softer around the edges. But it is quite comfortable to use anyways, just different :)
To be honest, after testing 1080p on my QHD it has become my preferred resolution when working with text (Hey, I'm getting older), but it's great to have the option to up the resolution (Found a nice little program that does this with hotkeys (Hotkey resolution changer)). I wouldn't pay very much extra for the QHD.

Just a quick question, can the 3rd Gen X1 accept any M2 SSD? There's no whitelist I have to worry about is there?

Can anyone recommend a good one to upgrade my 128 from? I also want to install Windows 7.. is there anything I need to be aware of?

Could anybody do me a quick favor and run the following command from command prompt: "powercfg /a"

I'd like to know whether or not this computer is supposed to support Connected Standby (InstantGo) or whether I messed mine up.

@Lee, i finally got my Carbon today! I have yet to install Arch though. I made a recording for you at Windows' default "0' brightness. I have a large window behind me so don't take care to the light, the screen does great with light when there is a little brightness on. Also.. not sure what the sound is on the video, but it ain't the laptop :p..

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/4r311fxpkusiton/20150508_150744.mp4?dl=0

As far as i can see, there is a littler flicker? Not as extreme as on your example video, but yeah.
This is taken on a Samsung Galaxy S4 if camera quality makes a difference.

I received my new X1 Carbon Gen 3. I have a Gen 2 also. The hinge on the Gen 3 is very tight, such that when I open the lid with one hand without holding down the base, it lifts the entire laptop up. This wasn't an issue on my Gen 2. Macbooks are notorious for perfecting this mechanism. Anyone else have problems with tight hinges on the Gen 3, or is mine defective?

Mine had the loose/clicking palmrest issue. Solved it my loosening two screws on the problematic side, sliding a small patch of electrical type under the front corner, and re-tightening the screws. The tape strip was about 4mm (L) by 2mm (W) by 1.5mm (D). I created it by folding 2-3 small patches over each other and then cutting out a smaller size.

    *edit*

To clarify a bit, the tape is pushed inside the case completely. It is not visibly sandwiched between the seams.

If you completely remove the base, you can see a small ledge near the front corner of the palmrest where the tape sits. It acts like a cushion.

Just joined the 3rd gen club, we got some at work and I've swapped out my 2nd gen for one. I'm -so- happy for the changes to the keyboard & trackpad, holy moly. The power button doesn't feel right tho, almost like something is stuck under it. It doesn't push down well. Also, while the trackpoint is far more usable, the spacing of the buttons is still kind of wide, I have to distort my thumb under my hand oddly to right-click. The trackpad feels so solid tho that I've just been using that.

If you have the QHD LG panel and think the colors are too warm, try the color profile linked next to the "Distribution of brightness" image on this page: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review...bon-Touch-20A7-002DGE-Ultrabook.113926.0.html

The profile is for the previous 2014 model. The panel listed in the review is LP140GH1-SPA2. My 2015 carbon's panel is LP140QH1-SPB1. Although the profile was calibrated for a different panel, the colors look accurate to my eyes and I prefer them to the overly warm defaults.

Hi everyone, I kind of messed up and left my Gen 3 X1 baking in the sun, so a few keys melted/warped, (o, p, 9, 0). I'm looking for a replacement but can only find gen2 keyboard keys, anyone who has both would you do me a favor and check if they are the same or at least will work?

    Thanks

Hey guys does anyone know where I can get a WWAN/LTE adapter for the broadwell X1 Carbon with <5 day shipping for less than $140?
I bought Gobi5000 with the code being EM7355
Does anyone know which adapter would work?

I didn't know that Lenovo had a whitelist....

Are you getting an error on the BIOS screen? I just put the Hyper X Predator drive on it and I get a "SATA controller not found" error but it boots.

I just received my WQHD model. The screen looks like it has a yellowish stint on it or it may be a warm colour profile like how noxxle99 described it. I would really love to change the colour profile so that it gives a clear white (i.e. blueish white). However, when I click on the link next to "Distribution of brightness" image on the page that noxxle99 provided above, a new tab pops up in my internet explorer with some coding.

How can I change my current warm colour profile to a blueish white screen? Can anyone please help? Thanks a lot!

I'm not really familiar with Thinkpad keyboards so could someone explain to me the purpose of the trackpoint? It seems like it can only be used as a cursor; it doesn't have any clicking or tapping functionality so what is the purpose then?

Hm, trying to figure out what is the issue with mine. Do you mind telling me what changes to the UEFI settings you have from the default?

Also, did you orignally have the SATA M.2 drive installed? Or the PCIe option? I had the former so wonder if there's a configuratoin change I have to make to remove the error.

A question to those with a PCI E SSD, would you mind sharing how quickly your machine boots, and how fast lid close/open times are?

I'm debating between the T450s and the X1 carbon. Right now, I am being swayed by the PCIE ssd in the X1 (sata ssd is the fastest you can get in the T450s).

EDIT: The lackluster screen on the X1 is also troubling. If it wasn't for that I'd be gungho about the X1

Hi all - I'm a Gen2 user looking to grab the Gen3 solely to change out to the old-style keyboard/trackpad. I hate the Gen2 setup.

Can anyone comment on the differences between the 240GB and 256GB SSD models? I'm looking at 2 models which are identical aside from the SSD drives. See spec below:

    Thanks

Works like a charm here. Sluggish graphics until windows update downloads new drivers. Fingerprint works great. System update does not have all drivers yet, so had to get the fingerprint one on the support page. Won't be going back to 7/8 :)
