    bits of color

frc is emulation of smaller number of bits to a higher number to simulate better color quality, cost saving measures

Can anyone share some battery tips? I'm only getting about 6 hours of light usage (browser-centric work).

Clean install of Win 10 here. i7/FHD touch screen. Undervolted -100mv.

What kind of applications are you using? 6 hours is a fair amount for coding with an IDE and Database or photo / video editing.
If that's just light browsing and Office I would contact Lenovo.

nearing 10 hour just fine here

I'd check for DPTF driver and power driver from Lenovo support page

update retreiver (desktop standalone app) doesn't display all the drivers correctly as of now

Just got my X1 Carbon! It is SO small and light compared to this Alienware M17x! Still in process of moving my apps and files to it, so I'll post my perceptions in a few days.

However, I asked Lenovo what I needed for an Ethernet jack and they sent me this adapter. Looks fine on the RJ-45 side, but this end doesn't seem to fit anything on the laptop?

Welcome to the team. I hope that you enjoy your new machind.

The adapter fits into the proprietary port just next to the USB-C / Thunderbolt port.

Except it doesn't fit! This is that port:

And the connector I posted doesn't fit, unless there's something I need to do with the port. As you can see, the connecter has a rounded edge on one side that makes it wider than the female part of the port. I'd love to find out I'm missing something but simply trying to push it in doesn't work because it is wider than the shiny metal port. Is there something behind that plastic tab on the right side of the port?

    Thanks

Haha, that is actually a little cap on the port on the right. Use your fingernail to take it off. I didn't realize it until I saw it removed, either. :p

Aha! That is it! Took that cap off and it fits. Why does the USB-C port for that port have a gap on the left side that the one next to it does not have? That little "hole" to the left?

    Thanks!

Question on the mousepad: on my Alienware it uses a Synaptic driver, which has a nice "momentum" option. This lets the pointer glide across the screen. I don't see this option with the X1C - is it available somewhere?

This whole port combo is there so that you can connect your X1C to Lenovo's newest super duper mechanical docking station. My guess is that most customers will buy a cheap TB3 dock instead (and I think that most businesses will do the same). However, I'm glad that there's still a cheap adaptor to plug an etherneet cable.

You mean the red nub in the middle of the keyboard? I'm trying that out also.

    Two more questions:

    1. Why does my battery show 99% and not charging? It appears from the Vantage battery report my "remaining capacity" while plugged in and no longer charging is 56.87 Wh and my Full Charge Capacity is 57.42. But charging is stopped at 99%. I do not have a Battery Charge Threshold set.

    2. Where is the recycle bin icon in my system tray?? Can't find it or how to show it.

Thanks, still moving a LOT of stuff and reinstalling a lot of stuff from my old Alienware. Then time to change my sig file here. ;)

Not sure about question 1, my x1c6 charges to 100%.
for 2), right click on desktop, select Personalize. Then go to Theme tab, scroll down, then click Desktop icon settings.

Also, I wonder if you have fan noise problem? Like something hitting the fan blade and generates a high frequency noise?

Something is inside this heatsink, not entirely sure what, I will remove later on.

Battery doesn't normally charge to 100%, maybe if you start from a lower percentage it'll go to 100%.

I recommend using lenovo vantage and setting start charge threshold to 70% and end charge 95%. It'll stop microcharging of your battery and make it last longer.

You mean your fan has the noise as well?
Actually I listened to a x1 yoga 3 a few days ago, and it also generates the same noise. So I wonder if it could be the problem of the specific model of cooling fan being used.
Anyway, I already ordered a replacement and will update when it arrives.

Hmmm. Breand new X1C, I mentioned earlier that the battery was showing 99% at fully charged, but this morning I start it up in battery mode (been keeping it connected to the charger) and it's showing 6 hours/97% left on the battery meter. That's just booted up with nothing at all running.

I thought with light loads they were touting 12+ hours on this machine?

The battery meter actually takes a while to update. Try wait for a few minutes and see how long it estimates.
Just as reference, my battery estimates around 15 hrs when 100% charged, with no program running at front. And for a chrome, pdf, word running, it estimates about 12 hrs.
Forgot to mention, but I did go through Phoenix's win10 tweak to turn off several features. Not sure if that helps.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find that guide. It would be nice to have an overall "Steps to tweak your new Thinpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen laptop" guide in this thread. Various settings, etc.

Where do people here set the display in terms of 100%, 125%, or 150%? I like the size of things on screen at 125, but I like that everything seems crisper (though smaller) at 100%. Oh, and this is the 1920x1080 screen.

1080P I would go with 100% (if you have good eye sight).

For 1440P, in KDE, that's what worked for me:

    Force Font DPI: 115
    Scale: 2.0
    xrand scale: 1.5 X 1.5

KDE will show up resolution as: 3840x2160 but you will get screen "real state" similar to 1920X1080. Works very well both for my internal display and external 4k display. No font rendering issues.

Some people will probably prefer a higher Font DPI.

Compared power drain with an X1C6 WQHD non-HDR this week, seem like on the same brightness the power consumption is almost double on the WQHD model.

The WQHD model also has computrace on, so I'm not sure how much that contributes to the power consumption.

I was not aware that there was a non-HDR WQHD display available. Is it also 500 nits?
I didn't get that much time to play around with my first machine but timed 6 to 8 hours of battery life on Linux with TLP and Powertop default optimisations.

That's a pretty curious result. I wonder if:

    1. The battery in the 300 nits display machine is busted
    2. I was lucky with my 500 nits machine
    3. Lenovo managed to buy a 500 nits display more efficient than a 300 nits one
    4. All of the above / None of the above

WQHD non HDR is 300 nit as spec quotes I think, only the HDR one is the 500 nit.
Battery on the unit, maybe new, not entirely sure since I didn't check.

On the other note I requested a replacement CPU heatsink for the X1C6, insisted that I'd rather replace it myself rather than deal with Lenovo depot brainlets.

You are getting pretty good results with the FHD display, WQHD displays are bellow average. I would expect 1 to 2 hours difference at most.

Totally agree about replacing the heat sink yourself. Is is running uncomfortable hot or are you aiming to extract the max out of it?

The QHD HDR 500 nits display is a LTPS type panel, which is much more expensive while allowing a lower-power consumption at a higher brightness.
