I'm totally out of my league here. To me you guys sound like: http://dilbert.com/strip/2015-12-20 LOL
Anyway... Back to noobie questions.
I've bought my X1C in Canada. Since the main power brick (AFAIK) doesn't have a detachable cable I've also bought the 65W Power Adapter (4X20M26268).
I will need to replace the power cable to use it in the UK. Will any IEC C7 cable work well with the 65W Power Adapter or do I need to buy something special?

Does it not?
Mine came with the power cord removable, so you can swap for different countries.Anthony Accioly likes this. -

I've read a review saying that the default power brick supposedly doesn't come with a detachable cable. Who knows? The 65W charger is faster anyway
.
About my original question , would any cable do it?Last edited: Apr 17, 2018 -

Still getting used to my X!C, and a small screen (compared to the 17" on my Alienware) but one things that stands out: I love this keyboard.

not that good once you try the 7-row keyboard on the older models
but is one of the best keyboards you can get for chiclet laptops -

The 7-row ThinkPad keyboard is the IBM Model M of this kind. I wish that Topre and Filco joined the Laptop keyboard business.
Anyway, the keyboard in the X1C 6th is really good, miles ahead of my P650 (that has a pretty decent keyboard as well). I just wish that I could physically swap the Ctrl + Fn keys. I'm aware of the BIOS / Windows Settings switch but the size of the keys don't feel right. With Fn + Ctrl I hit the Fn instead of control about 70% of the time. With Ctrl + Fn I hit the wrong key about 30% of the time (sometimes I end up hitting both keys at once). -
A couple more observations in my first days of using this new notebook:
1. I was in an all day meeting, so a good chance to test the battery and claims of 15 hours (1920x1080 touch screen.) The only things I did on it were web browsing and taking notes in MS Word. Using my iPhone 8 as a Wi-Fi hotspot. I got about 8 hours total. It kicked into battery saver mode after about 6 hours. I expected more than that, especially considering the very light load I was putting on it,
2. In the last couple of hours, my Iphone started kicking in and out wrt connecting (via USB) to the Thinkpad. Very rapid back and forth connected/not connected. I tried a new cable, no difference. Looked it up in Google and saw some people with the 5th gen complaining about the exact same issue back in march this year. Anyone see this or hear of this issue?Anthony Accioly likes this. -

My Galaxy S7 connected fine both to USB A and USB C ports. Transfer speeds were also pretty good. The only thing that I've noticed is charging my phone by pluging it to the USB port takes forever. Actually, I've figured out that my phone charges faster when I plug a wireless charger to the laptop USB than when l plug the phone straight to the USB. For some reason my phone charges way faster in my other laptop. -
I'm very frustrated with the power management settings lenovo has straight-jacketed this machine into. You can't adjust battery settings anymore after the fall creator's update, and apps like throttlestop seem unable to change CPU registers (though luckily you can still undvervolt). The ridiculous thing is I get better battery life on the 3rd slider to the left rather than far-left (battery saver mode). Why? Lenovo has made the speedshift EPP HIGHer on the higher performance setting and lower on the "battery saver" setting, meaning the CPU will jump to higher clocks and W more quickly on the setting that's supposed to give best battery life. What the ****!

That's my major complaint with the system. I cna't ajdust anything on the power side.
I'm on 1709, maybe I'll try 1607 later.
With XTU you can adjust power values and ot holds the power values as long as the CPU stays under the safe temperature limit (will change TDP to safe levels if thermals are breached). But the problem with XTU is that I always crash during extended sleep periods, only by resetting XTU (or letting it crash on purpose) would the sleep function be back to normal.Eason likes this. -
Yup, you can thank "modern" standby for that. Let me know if you find a way to have XTU keep the UV without crashing every time it sleeps.
-
Not UV, changing power limits do that.
With throttlestop it's no problem since TS can't change the TDP values. -
Is it? I don't remember touching them... let me try again.
Anyway, battery life for me for a 95% charge is 6 hours flat. I have reformatted/reset twice now. Disappointing and I'm going to just sell the machine at a loss.Mobius 1 likes this. -
What screen panel do you have.
Please check using moninfo or displaycal @Eason
On full (100%) brightness with B140HAN03.1 my runtime is around 7H30M-45M. 80% brightness is around 8:30-9H. -
XTU with nothing touched but display, cache, and core, I am still getting crashes every time laptop sleeps.
My panel is LEN40A9 B140HAK02.3 (FHD touch) -
Here is my idle situation with nothing open, not even in tray.

I need high visibility outdoors i.e. in the sun. Guess the brightness is ok but how is the anti reflection treatment? Anybody care to try post a picture with the screen in bright sunshine? I'm also considering the bright Huawei Matebook X pro, but I really like Lenovo's on site guarantee and accident protection, it saved me many times over the years as my machines takes some beating sometimes.
-
Do you have XTU open in the taskbar by any chance? I would disable XTU on startup (not the service).
With
- Discord
- Telegram Messenger
- Firefox x64 with ublock origin + noscript
- ShareX
- Google Drive
- WLAN optimizer
- Throttlestop
I get around 7 hours on max brightness (from 92-94% charge).
I can't find info on that panel, but my B140HAN03.1 (FHD 300nit non touch) 3.7watts. From what I can see on panelook the power consumption of touch panel is higher than the non touch panel because of the added digitizer, it's a minor difference but it can mean up of an hour of battery lifetime discrepancy.
BUT I don't have the touch panel, which may explain why you have a shorter battery life than me.
270nit (my unit, spec quotes 300 nits) is not usable outdoors, you want to get the 500nit HDR panel in that case.Anthony Accioly and Vasudev like this. -

The 500 nits display is glossy and it does reflect light (a lot). It's a beautiful colourful display but it wouldn't be my first choice to use outdoors. Have a look at the video bellow @8:00):

Yeah XTU is disabled on startup and was not in the tray. I'm generally running: Firefox (what'sapp, gdocs 3-4 tabs), throttlestop, and google drive at any given time.

Ok... I’m sure this is a stupid question. But I’m wanting to get an x1 and was wondering whether to get black or silver (pretty sure I know the answer).... just wanted opinions. Sorry for the basic question amongst all this other technical stuff.

Black
. The silver one is ok really, it may even be easier to clean (less of a fingerprint magnet) but I doubt that any diehard ThinkPad fan will recommend it instead of the classic black one.
-
That’s what I thought... I know when I think “thinkpad” I always think of the iconic black. Thanks for the reply.

This is a forum, not a work meeting. I'd vote for silver, just to be different. My ProBook has a black top and silver bottom. I think it looks good, though the silver metal is cold until it warms up.Millinium likes this.

Clean windows reinstall without any lenovo ******** and my battery life is around 11 hours now. I don't know what it was, but I'm not installing any more than necessary.

Some FWIW data: I had my first chance to really give my X1 a battery test yesterday. Executive team meetings, at a conference room table all day.
X1C with the 1080 touch screen, and to be fair the only things I had running was Firefox Quantum with a few tabs and Microsoft Word taking notes all day. I had the brightness around 50%, maybe a notch lower? Wireless running, bluetooth turned off.
The battery icon varied all over the place in estimating my battery life. I'm doing the same thing today and we've been in the meeting for about 30 minutes and my battery gauge icon is showing 19 hours, which I don't think is accurate. Yesterday it would go up and down pretty dramatically in terms of time projected (though of course the percentage remained accurate.)
Yesterday after 7 hours of the meeting with just what I stated I was running, the battery gauge showed 62% battery left. I'm running the same test today (our meeting will probably run about 9 hours.)Anthony Accioly likes this. -
Out of curiosity, have you had any weird trackpoint experiences or behavior after doing a clean install?
Reason I ask is because on one of my Thinkpads, I had a lot of trouble with the TP after doing a clean install from a OEM Windows 10 ISO. The trackpoint itself would work okay, but the middle button to scroll and what not with the TP would only work 50% of the time when I turned the computer on. If it didn't work, I would reboot or shutdown and turn back on, and it would work fine again. Shut down, turn on again next time and it would not work. Became very annoying and aggravating as the main reason I love and use my thinkpads is for the TP. I ended up downloading the Win10 recovery media from Lenovo and reinstalled it and have not noticed any issues with it since then or difference in battery life or anything (this is on my E460) and it doesn't look like Lenovo has a lot of bloat or garbage in this build that I can't get rid of fairly simply. Just curious because I would prefer to use a fresh install and not a Lenovo recovery media or pre-made build with extra junk in it, but I have always struggled to get the TP and middle scroll button to function properly when I do a clean install. -
If anything I think it works much better. This is actually the second time I reinstalled, but the first time I did a lenovo recovery media wipe/re-image (and the problem persisted). Clean install is the way to go -> install chipset drivers, FP sensor drivers from lenovo, and then only what you absolutely need to (say, to change battery charge threshold).Anthony Accioly likes this.

So apparently my company doesn't offer EPP for Lenovo (Dell only). How often does Lenovo run sales on their Thinkpad line? Or is there a certain time that is better than others to buy?

I have been thinking about getting one of these, but the pricing is a bit high even with the student discount. Does anyone know how often Lenovo UK has sales on ThinkPads?
-
Anthony Accioly Notebook Consultant
Hi hexaglow. Not as often as in the US I'm afraid. But keep and eye for sales, you can often get 5% - 10% off during holiday sales.
By the way, ATM it is worth to buy the X1C in the US and pay the import fees / VAT. I've bought the top end model with Global On-site guarantee in Canada for £1850 after Canadian taxes. Even with import fees and VAT this is not going to get even close to the £2605.59 price tag in the UK's website ( https://www3.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/thinkpad/x-series/ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-6th-Gen/p/22TP2TXX16G).Last edited: May 1, 2018 -
So what would you guys say the chance is of an X1 C or X1 Yoga ever coming with some sort of better graphics in it, whether it be something like Iris, or something like the MX150 in the t480? Would really love an X1 with some sort of better graphics for playing basic games when not working, but I feel like the T480 is really going to be my best bet of getting some sort of "real thinkpad" with any real GPU in it aside from intel HD. I wouldn't complain about the T series but the X1s are so damn sexy I can't help but dream about them.

I don't think it is happening anytime soon. If you need a dGPU, T480 FTW. But since you have a 1080 TI in the house, Moonlight Chrome is your friend. I do everything, from gaming to video transcoding through the remote client. Can't complain about Moonlight's performance, even on WiFi (I don't play fps games though ) -
Hi, I am the new X1 C6 user here..
I would like to intro myself, I am from Singapore.
Currently owned a X1 C6 HDR and T460s WQHD.
They both are greater machine.
So far so good, didn't complain at all.

Oh man, I really thought that this update was going to fix this. Can you confirm that you are on build 17134.1? -

That's frustrating... Hopefully Lenovo will patch this soon. Can't complain about the 500nits display, but I would certainly feel better about paying for an HDR display if I could actually use it

Unfortunately not, it seems there needs to be some sort of patch from Lenovo: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkP...HDR-capable/m-p/4061940/highlight/true#M85029

OK, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but I can't get my XIC to connect to my iPhone hotspot via bluetooth. I have the Thinkpad and iPhone paired via Bluetooth, but when I turn on the hotspot in USB mode, the Thinkpad doesn't connect to the network. When I look in Network Connections, under Bluetooth Network Connection, it just says Not connected.
I don't see any icons in the system tray other than the available wireless networks. Help!
EDIT: OK, figured it out so rather than delete this I'll post the solution for anyone else having the problem.
Once connected via Bluetooth: On your Windows PC, click
in the Notification area and choose Join A Personal Area Network. Right-click your device and hover your pointer over "Connect using," then select "Access point."
