i just got my T430s I7 + HD4000 HD+ or should i say my daughtersyesterday and my order date was 6/6 as far as the screen go's it looks fine to me and my daughters OK with it so its a keeper
-
yeah we'll see, i still need to get a tracking number yet. so far nothing
-
did you call every time i called it seemed to move along or they just update my page
-
Got my T530 yesterday, very satisfied so far. The screen is SO MUCH better than on my T400s.
I want to upgrade from 4GB to 16GB RAM - which brand/specific model is recommended? -
Depends if you want 4x4GB or 2x8GB. I got the Corsair brand, on 4GB they have C9 latency (XMP) and on the 8GB they have C10.
2x4GB is ~$52 and 2x8GB ~$125 -
This one worked well for me.
-
4x4? I thought there were only two memory slots?
-
Can you share your specs? If you got a quad-core processor and dGPU, would you please let us know if there is any significant throttling on battery like what happens with the W520?
-
I got a N1E2UGE (i7 3610QM). I haven't noticed any throttling but honestly I haven't looked for it either. It's a pretty fast machine, that's for sure.
-
I will appreciate it if you can test the performance on battery as you use it and let me know if there is any significant decrease in speed. I am seriously thinking of getting T530 with quad-core after the terrible comments I heard from every single person here about T430(s). It is a shame for lenovo to produce this new line with such displays. I have not received my T430 yet but I am trying to make my decision ahead of time so I do not have to think a lot once I receive it.
-
I have a question about RAM use. The problem is that I am not an expert to tell if more RAM will help with such use because I do not know the resources it utilize. I remotely access a huge database remotely and I find the speed of loading information sometimes very slow 9even with a quad core processor and 8GB RAM). It is a little faster when I access it on site but still slow. The database is accessed using Citrix and I wanna know if 16GB of RAM will show any significant improvement in accessing information.
Also, I do lots of searches and I may open like hundred tabs at a time. Would the 16GB RAM significantly improve the speed when moving between these tabs? -
It's difficult to say. Check your free memory. If it's always close to nothing, buy more RAM. Or just invest a $100 or whatever and buy the max RAM your machine can take.
-
So, I ran Geekbench, the results are interesting.
I have set energy manager to maximum performance.
Results running on Battery hovered around 3000 while with power plugged in it was at 9000. I ran it several times, the results where the same.
Maybe I'm missing something? -
Oops! Did you experience a significantly 'practical' difference though other than benchmark? I am starting to get confused now...
-
No, not really.
I wouldn't worry too much.
I think there's a good chance it gets fixed with a future BIOS update. -
I do not think so. I guess Lenovo has an enough past experience with this issue that if they wanted to/could fix it by now, they would have done it!
-
Yeah ;-)
But I read somewhere that it was fixed for a model in 2011 by a BIOS update. So if that was true then there's hope I guess. -
Sorry you are right T530 has only 2 slots. I was confusing it with the W530 which has 4 slots. I have T430s so I thought the T5xx being bigger may have more space inside.
-
Just use ThrottleStop if you want to control the throttling.
-
Oh, back to this again! For me, using software like ThrottleStop is one way of grdually destroying the joints of my processor. I know many would disagree with me but it's just my opinion.
-
I don't know if it's me being farfetched because I'm up 5.35am typing this but I was reading some old posts and came across a thread describing about a little app called KeyTweak which is a keyboard remapper. A little research on the app in ThinkPad Forums suggests that it can remap FN functions too.
Now we know from ZaZ that a X220 keyboard yields funny results on a X230 but it struck me whether this application could provide a soft mod for using a 7 Row X220 keyboard on a X230 by reallocating all the keys under Windows correctly? If it does then it would make a rather interesting proposition.
If i'm speaking absolute rubbish then I'm off to bed now! -
Well, since it only throttles on battery it's not the CPU that you'd be killing, but the voltage regulators creating Vcore for the cpu from battery power, if anything. (But probably not) The CPU wont allow itself to go hotter than TJmax anyways.
I have ran CPU's at 100% load at 90+C for months at a time for years of total time. That's within their specification, if they fail doing that, then it's a warranty replacement. -
what exactly are you looking to accomplish? i use an open source scripting language called AutoHotkey regularly and it can handle remapping keystrokes fairly easily. in fact, i just checked the AHK docs, and they mention KeyTweak, along with the pros/cons of remapping via script or registry:
http://www.autohotkey.com/docs/misc/Remap.htm#registry -
Well, the million dollar question that no one could answer it satisfactorily till now is why does not Lenovo be nice to their customers and use the expertise of end users who can solve this problem and give us machines without this issue?
-
The traditional 7row keyboard fit sin the *30 Thinkpads, but a lot of the keys are mapped wrong. So if you can remap all the keys and Fn functions to what they should be, you can use the 7row keyboards in the new Thinkpads.
I don't think scancodes are what you should be after for the F key function remaps though. The functions for the Fnkeys are stored where the Thinkvantage map is stored. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\IBM\TPHOTKEY\Class\01. Then there are a bunch of folders that represent each Fkey, and a few more for something else idk. You can specify a file to run, and parameters. -
They probably include throttling on battery to improve battery time. Obviously the machine is capable of running at full speed if it does so when plugged in. You definitely wont hurt the CPU, though.
-
so what do you do? i can buy a w520 keyboard and install it in my w530? have people tried this already?
and the problem is that the keys are mapped wrong? -
any news about X1 carbon release date?
-
Someone on this board has physically put in a traditional keyboard into an X230. It physically fits and works, but keys are mapped wrong. Considering the T/W/X2x0 keyboard assemblies are all the same, it should apply to x30 T/W models as well.

Yes, updated from August 2012 to Summer 2012. When does summer end?
ThinkPad X1 Carbon - tough, reliable Ultrabook Laptop from Lenovo (US)
Why is it lenovo.com doesn't handle redirects properly? -
Early September, usually.
-
I was taught that summer ended on the autumnal equinox (September 21-23) annually...
-

I guess that means the X1C date has slipped some.
-
Can anyone confirm that the finish of the T430 or T430s is the same from the top and bottom (rubberized) while T530 or W530 is a different finish from the bottom (plastic-like)? If this is true, why is that?
-
I know this is off topic but I did something stupid and I need someone's expert help here. I accidentally formatted my SSD that has no backup and all my data is lost and I am helpless. I was trying to install Windows 7 on it and during the setup, I chose the advanced mode and then chose to format the driver. Once I clicked on that, I knew the stupid thing I have done and did not continue the install. I am not sure what to do and none of the general software available online can help. Is there a way even if expensive to unformat or recover the data?
-
Terribly sorry to hear that. Your data is gone (unless it was on a separate partition that was not the installation target). When you were doing Windows 7 install, did you expect your data would be preserved by some special installation option?
-
No, I did not. I just recently sold my backup drive and got a new one but forgot that I have not backed up my data yet on the new drive. Just to clarify, i did not continue with the Windows installation. Once I clicked on format drive and the drive was formatted, I discovered what i did and did not continue with the installation. Is there a way that any professional company can recover the data?
-
No. All of them have a rubberized top and a plastics bottom (CRFP-GFRP-Hybrid top on T430/T430s, GFRP top on T530/W530, CFRP bottom on all of them).
-
there are plenty of software paid and free as well as professional services that can recover files that have been "deleted".
i'm not so sure about after a drive has been formatted, but its worth it to google it. i'm guessing its possible -
On an SSD, it is just about impossible to recover deleted data. Not quite like a magnetic drive. On an SSD data is actually erased, not just marked un-used.
-
If it was just a quick format, it shouldn't be too hard to recover the data. Try some of these: Recover Data Like a Forensics Expert Using an Ubuntu Live CD - How-To Geek or NTFS Undelete — Easy to use undelete software or Recuva - Download
-
Actually, even a quick format will erase data entirely on an ssd, if TRIM is enabled and working.
-
Good point. Wonder if TRIM is automatically enabled in the install environment? There's a reasonable chance that it isn't.
-
I have tried all kinds of software since yesterday's evening without luck (free and paid). I have not actually slept yesterday due to this crisis. I have always been meticulous with backup and never imagined that something like that can happen to me. I think SSDs are different and too complicated in the way they write the data and I finally decided to ship it to a professional company for evaluation and a quote as they claim (as many others do) that they are experts with retrieving data from SSDs even dead ones!
-
That is what I believe but I will update you if the professional company could do magic to it but even if they do, I guess they will charge me a premium.

Backups and duplicating your data are very different. Most people learn the lesson the hard way.
I keep multiple copies of my data. Usually on the order of five different copies. It really depends on the number of machines I am using, along with at least two copies in the clear on other SSD/HDD devices.
My biggest challenge these days are the merges and making sure I don't drop something precious. -
I honestly feel I will be dead if I did not get this data back. Yes, sometimes, you learn things the hard way but the interesting thing is that I backup all my data daily but I recently sold my backup drive and got a new one that I was about to open yesterday then this f... scenario happened. I guess I was sleepy when installing the Windows and that is why I did that stupid action. Anyway, I will see what the professionals say within 48 hours but even they can do something, I am not sure if I can afford the price.
-
On windows 7 it should be enabled by default, yes.
I use Beyond Compare to help with my backups. You can use it to compare two folders, and see what files are missing/different between the two. Saves me a LOT of time! -
I finally got my T430 today and I was so disappointed with different aspects, on top of them is the mediocre display. I tried to convince myself to keep it in all ways but it speaks up for itself. Here are my observations:
1. The screen definitely got the screen door effect and I could not avoid it.
2. The viewing angels and colors are terrible. Basically, they could better fix it at a certain position since any slight change from a certain position makes it useless.
3. I got the famous so-called "Chinese semen" or irremovable stain illustrated in an earlier post but mine was just beside the fingerprint.
4. The track point was not smooth at all and I have to push it very hard to move the cursor.
5. The battery latch came very loose (I know this is a common problem with Lenovo's 9-cell) but it is even worse in my situation.
Called Lenovo and arranged return. Ordered T530 with the following specs:
Intel Core i7-3720QM Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.60 GHz)
15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) LED Backlit AntiGlare Display
NVIDIA NVS 5400M Graphics with Optimus Technology, 1GB DDR3 Memory
4 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (1 DIMM)
Keyboard Backlit - US English
UltraNav with Fingerprint Reader
720p HD Camera with Microphone
320GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
Battery 9 Cell Li-Ion TWL 70++
Power cord 135W AC Adapter - US (2pin)
Bluetooth Bluetooth 4.0 with Antenna
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN
3YR Onsite NBD + 3YR Priority Support + 3YR TPP
Planning to upgrade the RAM to 8GB and place my Samsung 830 256GB in it which I just lost my data from
Unfortunately, I have lost the 500GB HD free upgrade and also I am not benefiting from the display upgrade offer. Actually the FHD upgrade in this model is $250 -
Have you played around with the Trackpoint settings yet? idk about smoothness, but there is definitely an option to make it more/less sensitive. I know thaton my X220, the Trackpoint sensitivity was ridiculously low.
Also, loose battery isn't a common problem, it was intentional.
