does only intel make their motherboards? Nope. Its the same thing here, give it time and the tech will possibly spread out.

    Lenovo - Laptops - ThinkPad - Edge

The coming soon was removed and the e420 and e420s were removed from the website.

So now I bet you are all wondering if the e420s and other new models were cancelled?

It was taken off then put back on.

T420s is probably the best Lenovo of the lot right now. But is still missing thunderbolt.

I will wait till 2012 models. The Toshiba R840 is a T420s competitor for all practical purposes.

In the 14" 4.2lb or under range, you have Lenovo T420s, Toshiba Tecra R840. Dell Latitude I believe is coming in heavier and Im not sure of the specs of the Samsung 6 series yet. The Sony 14" series is too heavy.

The Mac Book pro isn't bad considering what it comes with but the weight is just plainly too heavy on the 13 and 15" models.

Lenovo E420s is out of the picture for me at this time.

I have no choice but to wait till 2012 and the new models when Thunderbolt and Ivy bridge come out and it is possible at that time Thunderbolt could be upgraded in speed as well.

So I just talked to another rep. I asked the question "Will the New Edge E420s be released with the AMD 6630M upon rerelease?" and he states "yes the new edge e420s will be released on april 19th, 2011". Then just to make sure I asked "So on April 19th I can purchase the E420s with the 6630M equipped?" and he says "YES". Haha so hopefully they've been asked the question a lot and decided to actually release the e420s with the 6630M on tuesday! Crossing my fingers.

e420s is a beautiful machine IF you don't need enterprise class features like TPM chip and the like or vpro or expressport or usb 3.0. If you want faster AMD 6630M Video but dont care about enterprise features or security as much, the machine is a nice all purpose home usage machine.

I would really call the e420s consumer class but made better rather than a true business class machine.

e420s will have its clientel though. It is a nice mainstream PC for the masses.

Why did they make the battery unremovable? I thought I had found the laptop I wanted...guess I might have to rethink

I am sure you can find a way to remove it, it just wont be a fast swap.

The reason I am guessing they made it unremovable is because it lets you put more battery in the small size.

Got it in computer shopping mall in hong kong , local shop only sell the i5 model .

Quick review from one day use

    Pro
    • fast and quiet
    • light weight ( i weight it and it exactly 2 kg )
    • nice web cam
    • very loud speaker
    • decent gaming ( ATI 6630m + intel one , haven't install crysis to try but sc2 runs fine :D )
    • got wireless N
    • nice sleek looking design

    con
    • non- removable batt ( seriously what lenovo thinking here.. )
    • use a very thin hdd (thinner then those 2.5 " one , so the sales guy said cannot change to ssd atm. )
    • comes with a single 4 gb ddr3 ram ( so it running in single channel instead of dual channel , but i guess if u upgrade it wont waste that 4 gb )
    • no hdd or internet led indicator on the case ( there one for power and charger )
    • fuction key at the far left where the ctrl key should be (but bios can change it)

battery I think around 4-5 hrs range ( need a few cycle to see full effect ) , can post pic if u guys want.

overall a very decent laptop for the prices , very nice spec , but some funny design choice .
Seem lenovo try to copy the macbook design haha :) .

Hey thanks for the quick review mrsus. I have one of these on order supposedly shipping in the next day or two (according to lenovo) so i ive been dying to hear/see some owners reviews on these. Its crazy how theres no hands on reviews online yet as i know quite a few people have them now.

Mind if i ask your opinion on the screen quality?
I have a hp dv6000 with the glossy screen now and love it so im just hoping its at least as nice as this one.

Some pics would be great! Maybe one with the screen on and maybe one with an object next to the notebook to emphasize size/scale.

Oh yeah and i think i have seen a few 7mm solid state drives for sale online and i believe thats the size it would take but i could be wrong.

    Thanks again

So you can confirm that the e420s has a 6630m?
I wonder if the graphic is switchable?

Could any T420 owners comment on the touchpad quality and keyboard typing speed?

When your palm swiped the touchpad while typing, does it cause your cursor to jump around? Is your software able to turn off the touchpad temporarily while typing?

On the US Lenovo site, all that is listed for graphics options for all of the new 2nd gen core-i edge series models is:

Intel HD Graphics 3000. Is this implying that the 6630m is no longer part of the specs for the new edges? In specific I've been eyeing the e420s for the longest time because of the new i5 + 6630m combo. Can someone confirm that the switchable graphics exist for US customers? Thanks! :)

    Intel HD Graphics 3000

    for the e420s...

    Also,

for us non-student/family discount users....are there any coupons/promo codes flying around??

    ...ffs...

I guess...im going with Sony Vaio C Series....

    What the ...!
I guess my first post will have to be a rage post.
Been waiting for this for several months, checking this thread 5 times a day, and now they drop this?
I feel so fooled I just might go buy a *** MBP and ignore my needs.
My respect for Lenovo just vanished.

(oh and thanks everyone who's posting, making this a great forum- and thread)

dude...i know how you feel. I'm going to call and ask another rep 1 more time to be sure...and if they tell me no 6630m gfx card...than Sony just got my money with Vaio C series. what a waste of time..and hope...for a perfect machine..that will never be (unless im told otherwise)...

    UPDATE:
    ____________________________
Please wait while we connect with you with a Lenovo Chat Representative.

*Dean : Thank You for choosing Lenovo, my name is Dean and my id is xxx. What can I help you with today?

ME: Hey Dean - I was told a few times from multiple reps that the new e420s would be released with a discrete graphics card - like the 6630m

ME: However, I don't see that option on the webiste - is this not true anymore?

ME: or will it be avaliable in the future? and if so, when is the approx. date I can expect to see this option?

ME: ive been waiting a very long itme for this laptop to be released, but if it will not have discrete graphic card, I think I might have to look else where.

*Dean : Bare with me as we are experiencing heavy chat and call volumes.

ME: I'm just trying to figure out if I should wait longer..or if this option will not exists anymore.

    ME: no worries.

*Dean : The option should be back on the web by weeks end per my business operations manager.

ME: Great! Thanks. I'll wait then.

Looking at the keyboard up close, there appears to be a function key that toggles the touchpad.

My concern is whether the new integrated buttons into the touchpad will click if your palm rests on it. That's an annoying trait of some clickpads (like Apple's and HP's).

Ugh..waffling back and forth between the E220s and X220i. X220i is $140 more, but has the IPS display and non-ulv cpu.

Anyone know if the E220s keyboard keys have the same spacing as the E420s? I heard that the Edge 13 keyboard's keys were slightly closer together than the Edge 14. (which would ok, just curious)

There are no difference between the keyboard from the Edge. The only Thinkpad chicklet keyboard that are different from the rest is the x120e and the x100e, which have slight shorter key stroke.
