That's the zoom button, which you use to toggle to lower resolution
It is cheaper for the panel maker to produce, since they produce 16:9 lcd tv.
-
Thank you.
(I discovered that just a second ago via google, too)
Strange if there's no way to toggle the pad. I guess it's no big deal, as Lenovos tend to be nicely ergonomic to avoid accidental contact. -
yea now they are saying 4/22 for the new GPU
-
Hope that is really the new date, guess I am going to buy on 7/22 to get some decent discount.
-
pressing FN key + space turn on the a light near the web cam (the light shoot down to the key board kinda , got no idea it was there till u ask haha).
insert key is next to delete key on the E420s -
i was told by a rep in a month or so
-
I was referring to the e220s.
-
I believe they uses the same keyboard, what is on the e420s is also on the e220s.
-
I placed an order for an E420s back on 03/25. Initially, the estimated ship date was 04/13. Then it was changed to 04/19, then to 05/08, and now to 05/12. I talked to online reps several times and all they said was that they had to replace my order to their warehouse since their first order did not go through, an internal problem. In addition to this, today they sent me a second confirmation mail for my order which now had a different price on it and also they added a charge for S/H. I have no clue what's going on. Anyone has a hint?
-
My guess is that when they were available on the 3/25 it was a mistake, they are lacking some vital part, they did not setup the database for the order, or they haven't setup the factory lineup. As for the shipping and handling, call them and have them remove it, if you have select the free shipping.
-
@k2001: I think they still have a problem with their processing system because the price they mentioned in the confirmation mail is not the same as the one I see on my order status page. Another thing is that most of the online reps can't give me any clue about what's going on. So far it has been a horrible experience for me, to say the least.
-
Sorry, that you have gone thru this horror experience. Let's hope that the laptop is well worth the poor customer service.
-
Has any T420/420S owner figured out to switch the control and FN key?
-
e420s can switch from Bios.
-
No. See my previous post with a link to the e220s keyboard. Insert is nowhere to be seen.
-
So, we need to wait more for dedicated card
In E220s unboxing screen looks to be glossy any idea guys? -
You're right, I guess there must be a function combination button for that key.
Don't some site have those anti-glare filter for MBP, maybe you can cut it out and use it. -
Have you already tested out the battery life? so 4-5 hours for normal usage? How much is the e420s sold in HK?
-

yup..uk is selling it with the Radeon HD6630....just waiting for it to hit usa.
-
Iam waiting for it to hit to India
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
this is the edge lounge not the T series lounge, and yes you can switch -
ugh been waiting for this laptop with the amd graphics card forever.... what do you guys think of dell vostro 3550 as an alternative? anyone with experience with dell vostro laptops?
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
its going to be MUCH bigger than the e420s.
Vostro are entry line, the build quality is not superb, its basically some very thin aluminum sheets glued to a plastic frame, aside that I cant comment that much.
The build quality of the e420s is supposed to be superior since its entirely build of magnesium and aluminum alloy.
PS: And I actually never saw a simpler method to swap the HDD than the edge, you simply remove a cap on the side, and you are done -
ah...thanks for sharing that info. i've always been really skeptical with dell products...but seeing that vostro model with really similar specs and better price almost made me pull the trigger. i guess i'll keep waiting for that graphics card
-
The graphic should be available soon, as of now take a look at some photos to control your urge.

Look like the 420s are only marginally thinner than the e420. -
sweet pics. what do you guys think of the micro 80gb ssd option by the way? think its worth the $370 price tag?
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
ouch! no, get one from some retailer, the price is absurd -
cant lenovo decided to go with the 2.5 inch 7 mm high drive
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
what do you mean you cant?
The mpcie is user upgradeable. You will have to remove the Keyboard to access it, but its in the manual on how to do it.
All intel SSDs minus the 310 and the 510 are 7mm, you just have to remove the spacer
But yes the largest spinning drive with 7mm height is 320g, and i think its from toshiba -
Damn no momentus XT then...
-
if the 6630m option is not up by saturday morning...i think im goin gto go with the Sony C Series (backlit keyboard + 1600x900!)...im really not in mood to play waiting game any longer...its been long enough for me...
-
yea the waiting has been terrible. I would consider the C series but I prefer the SB. However I could also look at the Vostro 3450, Acer 3820TG/3830TG, and the new Asus U41SV
-
Why is the SB better than the C?? Isn't C just 14" and SB just 13.3"? Also any idea when Asus U41SV will be released? Also..the 3830/4830TG aren't out either (i think)...however, i think the Vostro 3450 is available.... -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
quality construction favors greatly any of the sony models. However the SB is a step up from the C.
The SB has a magnesium and aluminum alloy chassis. The keyboard deck is a milled piece of aluminum so its more sturdy.
However in the C favor you got the higher res display, however it appears that the display is very poor, even poorer than the 1366*768 res that sony uses. -
Sweet I didn't think anything came out in the uk before other countries, but I'm a bit surprised about the price. I don't know much about laptops but I always thought that you paid a big premium for the Sony brand but it looks that a similar spec VAIO SB (slower hdd and less vram) comes in at a little bit less.
Other than styling and the matt display on the SB, what are the big differences between the SB and the 420s with discrete graphics?Code:# VAIO SB CTO: £879 * Intel® CoreTM i5-2410M 2.30GHz * Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium * English (QWERTY) * Black * 320 GB Serial ATA (5400 rpm) * 4 GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM * DVD disc drive * 33.7 cm LCD, 1366x768 + webcam * AMD Radeon(TM) HD 6630M 1GB * No Wireless WAN * Security features * Standard battery * Office 2010 Starter * SD and MS card slot * 1 AC Adapter * Wireless LAN(bgn) + Bluetooth® * HDMI(TM) output * Backlight keyboard -
Sony have been losing ground as a premium brand, the market share is being eaten up by Apple. Since the release of their netbook, they have acknowledge they are not the cream of crop as they use to be.
The vram on the Sony is 1Gb less than Lenovo, you won't notice significance difference if are playing game at HD. However if you run game in higher resolution the larger vram does make a <s>huge</s> difference.
Edit:
After more research on the subject, the size of vram does effect the performance on certain game at higher resolution, but not as much I claim.

no it wont, it would need a better gpu for it -
tomorrows the big day...let's hope for the best...it's funny....i've never so much wanted to give away $1k of my hard earned money before.
-
Is the performance of the 128 SSD that much better than the 7200 320GB to warrant 300 euros extra in the price?
-
From what I know/read/heard is that SSD is amazing and def. worth getting...HOWEVER...the $300 is overpriced, even for todays prices...I'm personally getting the 7200RPM with the e420s...than waiting a year...for prices to fall and getting it OEM/third party SDD drive..and installing it myself...for much less. If you want SSD now...i believe its still a lot cheaper just buying it after market..instead of through Lenovo (though you will have to install it yourself). Same logic goes with ram usually. I'm getting 4gm in 1 slot...and will get another 4gb ram later in the future..if i think i need it. 4gm ram is more than enough for 95% of the people out there.
Questions:
- Which warranty program you all getting?
- I didn't see a option of a bigger/longer lasting battery on the e420s...I just see bigger AC power adapters...am I missing something?? how do i get a bigger battery on this laptop? -
There are no battery options on the e420s. The battery is integrated.
Although the standard e420 has multiple battery options like other Thinkpads.
Regards
BenMar -
Integrated battery? Man, that stinks.
I was starting to think this with the 6630 was "IT" for me.
Any way to replace it with a screwdriver? -
Yeah you can access the battery via screw driver, it take a couple of steps.
Remove hdd assembly,
Remove keyboard,
Remove top case assembly,
Replace the battery.
The battery on the machine can last 1000 charge cycle, which mean you have at least 3 years before you have to worry about this. -
thats just short of solving a cryptex
-
Good to see the 6630 hitting the market (at least in the UK.) They want a 165 pound premium for the 6630 and the i5-2410. Since they generall charge 50 pounds for the CPU upgrade that leaves me thinking they are asking about 110 pounds for the GPU. I'm hoping that translates into a similar bump in dollars once it hits the US.
Put it this way, the base i3 model is $699 in the US and 722 pounds in the UK. So you have to figure if the i5/6630 upgraded model is 885 pounds in the UK, it will be $850 in the US. And that is a pretty compelling price- especially since it will go down from there.
That said, since the e420 (non "s") is cheaper and only a few oz more, I'll probably go in that direction.
BTW, the e420 says it has a 1600X900 screen when you go to buy. But the spec sheet says only 1368X768, so I'm guessing the higher res is a typo:

Lenovo - Laptop computers - ThinkPad Edge E420 -
I saw this as well when configuring an e420. It also gives you the option of antiglare (matte) or vibrant view (glossy) when selecting an e420 display.
Will be keeping an eye on this to see if it more similiarly matches the e420s in the coming weeks. If not, then I'll be leaning towards the standard e420. Weighs just a few more onces and seems to be more configurable.
BenMar -
Wait..is the e420 getting an 6630m also? I didnt think it was. Also - yeah it doesn't look like it has 1600x900 like it states...if it did...man that would be an awesome machine.
Ideally, i wish the e420s would have 1600x900...now that would be amazing. I couldnt ask for anything more in a laptop. -
Well, if the 1600x900 and discrete graphics options come to the E420s before my T420s ships, I'll cancel my T420s order and get that instead. I'll lose the bay options... but it would probably be 1/2 to 2/3rds the price.
-
e420s *should* hopefully have a discrete gfx card (6630m) sometime tomorrow (that is what some lenovo reps said)....if not tomorrow...than sometime in the near future according to all the reports/rumors. However, there is no indication it will ever have 1600x900. So I have no hope for that. I am willing to take the hit on resolution if I can at least get the 6630m gfx card. If I can't even get that...I'm looking elsewhere. And I really hope they release that option tomorrow...im getting a case of trigger finger.
Other 0ptions if e420s fails on me:
- Sony Vaio SB
- Dell Vostro 3450
- Acer 3830TG/4830GT
- Asus U41SV
Thinkpad Edge 420s
