    I think that's VGA port.

It is a pity that this small part does not fit with the chassis tightly. Otherwise it is perfect! Hope it will finally get fit with the chassis after some use. :)

Right now it is happening in AC mode too. :(

I'll mess around with the BIOS for a bit after I finish with my homework. I really hope someone can find a solution to this somewhere. My C90S and EEE never made any noise like this.

    BIOS (v1.12) - Config - Power
Speedstep - Maximum Performance both AC and Battery
Thermal mgmt - Maximum both AC and Battery
    CPU power mgmt - Automatic
PCI Bus power mgmt - Automatic
PCI express power mgmt - Automatic
Most unused devices turned off (about half of them) in Security
    * some BIOS settings appear to be overridden by Power Manager, so I leave them in high settings

Power Manager (3.12) Maximum Performance (I restored defaults)
Changes: Intel graphics - Maximum performance both AC and Battery, and lowered brightness
    * modifying the first few "System settings" appear to affect Turbo, such as setting "optimize Fan control" to "balanced" disabled Turbo in most/all my tests.

Turbo appeared to have the most affect on voltage (changes), which make sense, my i520 regular clocks at 2.93, and makes a big difference in performance. But I suspect any significant voltage change will cause the noise. If this is true, then fixing this for good may be difficult given the dynamic nature of the T510, i.e. i520 Turbo, graphics power mgmt, Wifi power mgmt, etc, etc.

As mentioned, I really only have motherboard noise during Windows startup, and loading big apps like Lenovo tools. Seems the noise is directly below the "A" key.

HI, i am wrong again, after the changing the hard disk, the noise continues, the its actually a CPU whine or some other name. Anyway, my problem is lasting whether the AC mode or the battery mode, it's really annoying.

I have searched the forum and have not found a suitable solution to the new i5 i7 processor...

    sigh... :(

Can someone record this "CPU whine" on the mic and upload it somewhere? I want to listen it before buy.

I can confirm this is working. I haven't been getting the noise on battery today and didn't get it last night on AC. I'm getting a little less battery life (about an hour less, still getting 5-6 hours solid though), but it is worth it. I'll no longer get a headache when using my T510! :D

Thanks a TON, maybe even two tons for this help!!! :) :) :)

I'm still getting it when using FF with some flash loaded.. or Chrome opened (w/o any page loaded)

Is your noise all gone? or just only when it's idle?

I've not heard it under any situation since I made those changes- including HD youtube videos, Visual Studio, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and MS Word. If it was going to make the noise, I'm pretty sure it would have by now.

Interesting.. I'll try one more time then...

So, you basically did what mike5065 described in #304 ? or you've done something additional?

Small update: looks like when I set maximum CPU speed to Low, THE noise is totally gone...

    Thanks.

I followed his instructions pretty much exactly. Did you go into the BIOS and turn off devices not being used? I almost skipped over that part by accident.

I read about this, and also tested, and it does work. As long as CPU performance is Low or Lowest, this noise seems to go away.

Mind you, both these settings turn off Turbo, which is unacceptable for me.

How does the full hd 1920x1080 screen compare to the latest macbook pro's screen in qualitative terms with regard to brightness, contrast, color, viewing angle? Is 257 nits noticeably dimmer than the 300+ nits of the mbp?

I'm not experiencing any performance differences at all. CS4 and Visual Studio run just as fast as they did when boost was enabled. The boot speeds aren't any different either.

Maybe I'm not putting the system under enough stress or something?

The only downsides I'm seeing are the hour of battery life lost (oh no, 6 instead of 7!) and the temperatures are a little higher because it isn't speedstepping lower.

    Yes, still no luck...

Could you please post a screenshot of Core Temp when you'll have some time?

So far my best solution to get rid of it is to set max CPU speed to Low + disabling power management for CPU, PCI... in BIOS.

    Hi guys,

I'm looking on the Lenovo website right now and the only choice in terms on graphics for the T510 is the nVidia SG 512MB, AMT... Why is this ?? And what is this card, i can't even find it on nVidia's website ...

EDIT: I think it's because i'm in Canada, so i use the canadian lenovo's website... But, is it possible that I can't get the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 3100M in Canada on a T510 ??

I do exactly according to the #303, but my noise just continues, never stops!
I felt frustrating about this, and I am wondering whether I should return the laptop back to Lenovo and maybe they would send me a rebrushied one. That's even worse..

What should I do? Guys, give me a little advice, my noise never stop just continues and when the room is silent, I felt my head is gonna blast.....

it seems like so many people are experiencing noise from the T510... The R500 was completely silent, the T500 was also very quiet. How could it be that the newer, improved version is noisier?

My T510 is shipping right now, and this kinda makes me worried, maybe I should have gotten a T500 from the Outlet (as I originally did)

I'm not so sure that it is the T510 causing the noise. It is definitely coming from the i5 processor. Are there reports of i5's causing noise in other laptops?

    Just kidding, no offense .
Seriously though, is it the same whinning noise? Does it happen both when on battery and plugged in?
If that's your CPU - not much to do. That's how i-core processors distinguish themselves.

Yes, it's quite common in other notebooks. My AW M17X has it as well.

oh, so it's the i5? are the i3 or i7 noisy as well? if i get a noisy processor is it possible to change it?

the dual core I have on my R500 is so quiet, why would Intel make the newer version louder??

Don't be confused , it's the same card. In Canada they just use a different naming system, for some weird reason.

    Hey everyone.
I ordered a T510 on 19th March and am still waiting for the order status to change from "released". How long does that normally take? I didn't go for FHD or SDD.

I've been looking for a headset adapter for converting the 4-pole 3.5mm combined headphone/mic jack to two 3.5mm stereo sockets for a standard stereo (audio in) headset. Yeah I want to use my existing headset! I don't want to use the internal mics for skype etc! :D
The only one I found was here but am hoping to find an alternative, maybe a little cheaper. (EDIT: I just remembered this one too, but it's even more expensive with shipping).

It is possible to make one yourself but would require soldering skills and patience, and would not look as good as a bought one. There is a guide here. The 3.5mm 4-pole plug and the two 3.5mm 3-pole sockets can all be bought from Maplin (UK) but again, the cost adds up ( here and here)
If only I could find one on ebay, I'm sure there would be one for £1 and free shipping (works for stuff like this!)... and there's not much that can go wrong with the headset adapter anyway.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my research with the T510(and T410) community. Does anyone have anything to add?
Hope this wasn't all posted before on another thread. I read the whold of this thread and thanks for all the detailed T510 info. But I didn't have time to ready many other threads (i.e. T410).

    Take care y'all.

You can get these USB adapters cheap on ebay and amazon - about $2 + $5 shipping (US).

Hey pstrisik and thanks for the info.
However, I don't like the idea of using a USB stick soundcard.... it just isn't an elegant solution IMHO.... why fill up a USB port simply to use headphones when a headphone socket exists for that purpose? An audio-only solution is more elegant and *should* work out cheaper.
I will continue this discussion on the other thread (the one that you suggested).

You can recover the Recovery space by double-clicking the Recovery drive from Windows Explorer.

It should ask you what you want to do. In my case, it deleted the drive, the partition, and even added this unused partition space to the main partition.

Not sure how to recover the System partition. I'm leaving it there for now.

My guess is yes, the Recovery disks and Recovery partition would be the same, if not identical, except in how they boot. Guessing though. I have used the Recovery DVDs to build a system, and it worked perfectly. The recovery partition is too expensive to keep around on SSD.

The System partition can be viewed in Computer--> Manage--> Disk Management. It looks similar to a grub boot loader partition, so I left it. Likely what directs the recovery when selected from BIOS, usable if you still have the Recovery partition. But, again, just guesses, and I'm not deleting it.

The Recovery drive (thus Recovery partition) will automatically remove itself if you choose "remove" after double-clicking the Recovery drive in Windows Explorer. It also recovers the unused disk space into the main partition. I used it, and it worked much better than trying to remove and recover the partition using Disk Management (above). I thought it was pretty slick.

@lox18.... congrats and hope you enjoy the FHD screen. I decided against it due to the extra cost and quoted delays. Guess there wouldn't have been much delay after all! :)
I guess what is happening is that, as soon as the Lenovo site says a particular component comes with delays, less people order it, so it becomes more available and thus the delays are gone! Then all the other components are over-subscribed (i.e. HD+) and their availibility goes down, causing delays.
But maybe it's not as bad as that. Just a thought! :)

@ akadoublej and Mutnat: I checked www.monoprice.com but didn't find what we need.
One option would be to buy this one, which is close but not the 4-pole, and it's cheap.... and then to convert it yourself by buying a 4-pole 3.5mm jack and re-wiring it. Hmmmmm.... I will keep looking.

I found some more info but no success in finding a cheap ready-made device...

http://pinouts.ru/ is a great site for technical wiring details of various devices. There is no entry for the T410/T510 audio socket but it should be the same as the iPhone headphone jack adapter.

EDITED: Found this set but it is a little overpriced + shipping.

And be careful!.... I keep finding Y splitters like this one which are NOT WHAT WE NEED! These just split the audio to two headphones and are wired wrongly for a headphone/mic headset.

UPS have the destination as "BUCKINGHAM, GB" which is slightly worrying as I don't live there :p Oh well, I'll see what happens...!

Nope. That is to hook up a 2.5mm mobile headset to something that takes a 3.5mm headset. It doesn't help hooking up a PC headset with separate mic and headphone plugs.

I don't think it would be a matter of simply changing the end connector of this adapter, since it's a simple headphone splitter.

Yeah it would be..... If you change the 3-pole plug to the 4-pole one then you have to rewire it anyway, so you can wire it up as in the DIY guide I posted in my first message. :D
But anyway, I would rather buy one ready-made.

Yes the 9-cell sticks out. A good amount.

The 6-cell is flush, but what are you gonna get on 6-cell in this machine? 3 hours? Check the tests/reviews.

Yes, the battery stick out. Look at this review. You can see the 9 cells battery sticking out at the back on some of the photos. I think the 6 cells battery should be flush with the rest of the laptop.

Well it's not THAT much. If I remember correctly it's about 0.7". Hopefully that helps?

You can sort of see it here, but sadly that's the best pic I've got of it right now.

FYI. The Lenovo rep I spoke with this evening claims the full HD displays will be back in stock at the end of April.
