while, like you, i'm concerned about overheating, the fact remains that many Macs with their lack of properly cooling vents get even hotter (!), yet, many users get by and seem undeterred, in fact, this "con" doesn't even factor into its sales ...just look at the Macs' popularity! here in manhattan, walking into any coffee bar would, anecdotally, result in thinking that this world ONLY has Macs!
that all said, theverge's review was oddly non-scientific, oddly anecdotal. at least notebookreview.com's reviews MEASURED temperatures and posted pictures with their locations!!
between this reviewer's skewed review, and Lisa Gade's oddly skewed review as well (she kept mentioning how expensive this x1c is while waxing poetic about her "love story with the Z 2012"), i'm wondering what Sony did to encourage this?!?
i enjoy Lisa Gade's reviews, many of them are smart and useful! the one on the Z 2012 was oddly positive without mentioning its number of negatives (tiny trackpad, shallow key strokes, impossibly poor sound, etc).
Au contraire, her review of the x1c was oddly negative repeating how expensive this x1c is, but this x1c is LESS expensive than the Z 2012!! why didn't she do a "high end laptop shoot out between the Z 2012 and the x1c"? it is exactly what many readers would want to read! instead, she put the Asus next to the x1c and just talked about screens. true, it is one metric, one parameter, but hardly the entire story. furthermore, many buyers of the Z 2012 would consider the x1c and the converse is true as well.

Don't take verge review seriously... It is now become a rule that whenever there is mac out there all reviewers are putting praises and downplaying the cons...
But whenever pc maker comes out with something exceptional there is always this huge even if mac had similar issues... The fact is that X1 is really great machine and perhaps biggest cons really is the price point. -
I'd say its bigger con is its battery life (or lack of) and its lack of battery options, like a sheet battery.
however, chaque un a son gout. -
I take the knock on the price point with a grain of salt since the real price will be a lot lower. For example, in a May announcement from PCWorld the article stated the the T430s was starting at $1399. Now, with a B&N discount the T430s starts at around $600. Obviously we don't know how much the discount will be but don't expect the list price.
Lenovo Launches Fleet of New Ivy Bridge ThinkPads and IdeaPads | PCWorld -
Right. I keep thinking the same. I just hope that the discount will be there at launch. I would be surprised if it wasn't because every machine seems to have a "web discount".
As far as the review from The Verge, I would agree that they are bias towards Apple. Someone in the comments pointed out something pretty fun.
The review is good and I love the pictures and video review they did. But the scores and reasoning for it are ridiculous. But I guess I'd be pretty hypocritical if I said, at least they put it in front of the Samsung Series 9 13" (7.4) and Asus Zenbook Prime (7.1)
That's about the order I'd put them since it's been pretty hard for me to decide between the Carbon and S9. -
why is the battery life now listed at 8.2 hours?
ThinkPad X1 Carbon - rugged business-class Ultrabook from Lenovo (US)
gotta be a mistake i take it? -
Unless I'm mistaken or they've updated the specs recently, the z3 has a TN panel, not ips. I have one, and it's not ips.

Dilip Bhatia, VP of Lenovo said a similar figure at their official unveiling this month. I don't know why they keep throwing that number out but I don't think it's accurate. I would trust the 6.2h and realistically expect 4-5 hours under moderate usage.
-
MobileTechReview did say that the graphics performance was pretty bad compared to other ultrabooks with the same CPU.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Review - YouTube
So maybe it is terrible. -
If they're including the same hardware as the others, I don't understand how it could be much worst. The only thing I can think of is software and how it's optimized. If that's the case I'd expect bios/sw updates to bring it up to par with the others. It just seems odd to me.

I can understand a difference between OS X and Windows 7, but there should not be huge differences between all of the Ivy Bridge machines running Windows 7. On the other hand, who has done a benchmark where all of the machines were on the test bench at the same time and tested exactly the same way?
Here are the areas I'll continue to watch:
- Street price
- Reports of poor cooling
- Street price
-
yeh that makes no sense. theyre all using integrated 4000 graphics.
-
I think a lot of the poor performance comparisons boil down to bloatware and lack of a clean install.
-
Agreed. I'm gonna definitely wipe and load Win 7.
-
well, it's either going on sale on lenovo.com in 12 minutes if they mean 8/14th EST starting midnight
or...maybe in the morning?
-
This afternoon I asked my rep when I should check and he said tomorrow afternoon. But who knows. I'm not expecting it at midnight but it would be a nice surprise.
-
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
-
Wow. I'm surprised it already released right at midnight.
I told you guys the 8GB would hike the price up like crazy. -

The MacBook Air with the same config is $1000 cheaper. Awesome job Lenovo. Brilliant. -
Something is wrong. I don't think those are the correct pricing. I don't see it on the public site, but only on the EPP page.
The cheapest MSRP is $2,285.00 for the i5/128GB/4GB model that was supposed to be $1399. I think there will be some adjustments. I only see a 1 year warranty attached to it even. -
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
Yes, I was looking through my EPP site, too. Another thing I noticed is that there is a 4 week lead time for shipment on CTO orders. -
The base model is 2300$

Something is clearly wrong -
i'm tempted to buy one and hope for their price assurance policy to take care of me
-
That's idiotic
-
This is only the cost of a retina macbook pro, no big deal
-
LOL. Just wait a little. It's not like it's going to ship at a different time if you wait a few hours or until the morning.
-
There were several people in various countries that had access to advance price information that stated the 4GB upgrade was going to be about $1,000 USD. May not be far from being accurate.
-
Right. THAT might not be out of the question, but the starting MSRP should not be $2300. It should be $1400. This is NOT correct.
-
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
Flipping between the two options on the site is a $230 difference. I fully expected Lenovo to jack the price into the stratosphere, but I am not paying the early adopter tax. I'll wait until the price settles. Lets hope for a correction, soon. -
Let's hope that the price drops to $1299/$1399 after coupons by tomorrow afternoon.
-
It can't be.
Every single advanced review from major reviewers claimed $1,399. -
Nothing new folks, not the first time Lenovo's screwed up the pricing on the site on release day. Remember the microsoft office discounts Lenovo gave? Just wait a couple hours until it's fixed, looks like they're priced a thousand above or so.
280 dollars for the ssd upgrade is pretty steep, and there are a lot of funky things going on in this config. I'll -
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
$1399 for what? I was referring to the difference in price from 4GB to 8GB of RAM.
Yes, I believe the base EPP prices are currently incorrect. If the config I want drops down to the $1500-$1700 range I'll buy one. $2600 is clearly wrong. -
I'm hoping they drop to that before coupons. The price now must be a mistake. No way the base $1399 they stated is after discount because Lenovo has so many different discounts.
-
Yea, I've said it before and I'll say it again. $1399 is low enough. Actually, I've said that $1699 is low enough. Keep the margins high on the premiere systems and put that back into r&d for next generation premiere systems.
-
Notebook companies don't drive development, Intel does.
And no one would buy a laptop that is essentially the same as an Air for $600 more. -
If you can't maintain decent sales going for high margins will backfire with lacking volume. Most people on the street- including corporate users these days- will go for a MBA without blinking if this isn't close to the same price (or cheaper, let's see).
-
You should try out a ThinkPad at one point. There's quite a bit of non-Intel driven development in them.
The X1 Carbon is not essentially the Air. Take a look at them when you get some free time. -
I'm posting from a t60p
-
They're foolishly making the WWAN standard. That's a $125 added to the price most people don't care about.
-
That is very puzzling....
-
Thors.Hammer Notebook Enthusiast
I am, too. 15" Flexview.
-
One thing is clear from these 2.5k prices. After the web discounts, they will fall down to the $1399, $1649 etc that were announced. But for many like me, who were hoping for a a web discount on the $1399 and $1649 to bring it down further to around $1000, that is certainly not going to happen. So the Sony Vaio S Premium it is for me
-
Likely. It'll happen for me no matter what. Ideally between the $1399 and $1699 pricepoint.
-
Jesus, they really launched with the top CPU model not being configurable to 8GB.
There really is no logic to that.
Lol/cry. -
when option with 8GB of RAM will be available?
-
It already is.
-
Folks, the real deal pricing is here. 1 8GB model is here... but not on an i7...hmm.
No 3yr warranty as of this post.... -
Intel Core i5-3427U
8 GB 1333MHz DDR3L SDRAM
256 GB Solid State Drive
Lenovo X1C Total $1,879.00
1.8GHz Intel Dual-Core Core i5
8GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
256GB Flash Storage
Apple Air 13 Total $1,599.00
Really, Lenovo, really?!? -
$200 from 4gb to 8gb is criminal. Lenovo Visa has the normal price now. X1C isn't discounted much right now compared to other models.
