Has anybody experienced a rattling noise with their X1 Carbon 5th Gen? I just got mine 2 days ago and hear a rattle from somewhere underneath the bottom cover when I move the laptop or tap near the keyboard firmly. Wondering if this is a common problem.

Mine has the smaller opening with just two vent intakes...

Still waiting for the replacement to come - seems like they have a serious delay on some part(s) and nothing is getting shipped anytime soon.

EDIT - just been informed by Lenovo CS that they have halted production of both the X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga due to camera quality issues which is what is causing the delay

Is everyone happy with the fingerprint scanner? I'm not sure if its worth it to upgrade to the IR camera for Windows Hello. If there's already a fingerprint scanner then having face recognition is kind of redundant.

I've been waiting to purchase one with a IR camera. Where did you see this option available? I don't see it as a option on the US site.

My X1C had some defective touchpad/trackpoint hardware (as described in the Touchpad thread) and Lenovo replaced it for me. After several days, things have been smooth sailing for me, except I noticed that on some sites, Chrome scrolling was terrible versus Edge. I did some research and found a fix. If this issue bothers you, open chrome://flags and disable Smooth Scrolling. This fix makes my scrolling a lot smoother, ironically!

Proud owner of an X1 Carbon 5th gen as well. :)

One question though - how do you guys squeeze out 10+ hours battery life!? Is this with "Battery stretch" on at all times?

I've been experimenting the last 2 days and the max I could get out of 80% charged battery were exactly 6 hours. So 100% would be around 7-7,5h max!
Bluetooth mouse connected, no other peripherals, lowered brightness. Mozilla Firefox active browsing, Word, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, OpenVPN - normal working day with moderate to advanced multitasking. Battery stretch disabled.

Would appreciate your advise. Windows shows that Mozilla Firefox consumes 30-35% of the battery (comes as consumer nr. 1), Outlook is usually in the neighborhood of 10-15%, the rest are smaller numbers

@Mobius 1 and everybody else - have any of you had any success undervolting for reduced heat, improved performance and battery life? Since the temperature limit is a fairly conservative 75C.

undervolting is limited on U-chips, generally they all top out at around 65mv or something

heat issue, maybe try to source a larger pattern hsf assembly, and use liquid metal.

    Hello guys !
I'm going to buy the x1 5th gen. I would like to know if having a 65W charger (instead of a 45w) will not use the battery more, if I don't use the fast charge. In other words, is the 65w and 45w charger deliver the same intensity (in Ampere) when the fast charge is not used.
If the 65w use the battery more even if I never use the fast charge, I will take the 45w charger.
    Thanks !

    Just recieved the replacement laptop.

Noticable difference in the build quality. No loose corners underneath that click, no issues inserting the SIM card, new touchpad that seems much more glass like which works a lot better and finally the fan no longer spins up all the time. Looks to me there were issues with the first builds that have since been resolved.

Also have the new IR camera which works really well Finally its the laptop I was expecting...

    Hi Everyone,

I've had my X1 Carbon for almost three weeks now. I love it, but the fans always seem to be on when the laptop is running off AC power--no matter what I'm using it for. Has anyone else had this issue? When I run the unit off the battery, the laptop is almost always silent. Just wondering because I would like to take advantage of what is left of the return period if this is a serious problem.

    Thanks.

    That's very good to hear.
Could you comment more on the fan on this replacement - is it mostly silent now, then only spins up under certain kinds of loads?
Is is the i5 or i7?
    Thanks

    Hi Awharton,

I was inspired by your posts to check my own laptop, and I quickly discovered a loose (clicky) corner. With this problem on top of the fan issue, I've decided to send my laptop in. Are there any special instructions I can issue to insure that I get a new replacement unit? Should I go through my warranty or is there a special way to get a replacement? I've had the laptop for three weeks.

Can anyone comment on Fan Noise? I am getting ready to buy one today and I am hesitant on having another laptop with fan noise. I often work in quiet areas and my last two laptops were returned because of fan noise. I only use Office (heavy Excel), Firefox for reading, Skype, and an occasional YouTube video. I was looking at the HP EliteBook 1030 since it uses passive cooling (I know it is a Core M processor), but I really need to know if the Fan Noise is a problem. Thanks in advance!

Rarely spins up now - only under load when doing something that is taxing the CPU. On the previous laptop the fan was spinning most of the time.

I just opened a case with technical support. They sent an engineer but he could not resolve the fan noise issue so I was then issued with a DOA form which allowed me to order a replacement. I got one of the very first laptops of the production line and this new one is almost three months newer. I would say any new version will probably be OK - if my experience is anything to go by.

    Hi awharton,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly... when you say the new version will be OK... does this mean you can still hear the fan noise? If so, are you just willing to tolerate it because the other benefits (i.e. design etc.) outweigh the periodic fan noise? Sorry, as I know I am being a little neurotic, however some laptop fan noise is just such a distraction... I guess I could being headphones with me.

The fan noise is very minimal now. Unless you are doing something that is specifically taxing the CPU the fan is not on at all. Under normal working conditions I doubt you will have any noise at all. Certianly that is my experience so far with the new laptop.

If I'm looking for a SSD upgrade, what exact specs should I be looking for?

The part between M.2 / PCIe / NVMe confuses me.

Would this work? (WD Black 512GB Performance SSD - 8 Gb/s M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive - WDS512G1X0C)
    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820250085

    - pricing wise, it seems fairly cheap relative to other 512GB SSD options. How would it compare to other options or does it become fractionally faster but much more expensive as you get into the $200 USD+ range?

    Thanks!

Both SATA and PCIe NVME SSDs should work.

I ordered the Based X1C with 128GB SATA SSD and swapped it with a Samsung 960 EVO - 500GB NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD
    https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-960-...&qid=1494858858&sr=8-1&keywords=960+evo+500gb

It was detected immediately. So, I think the one you linked above should also work.

As far as performance is concerned the WD Black seems much slower in reviews, but the real world difference could vary depending on your workloads. Check out the review below:

I just ordered the "In Stock" model 20HR000FUS. Can anyone comment on which SSD manufacturer these are shipping with? Mine is coming with the 512GB PCIe model, and I am asserting its a Samsung 960 Pro.

Additionally, has anyone found the service and maintenance manual for this 5th generation unit, if so could you post the link? I have tried searching but could not find it.

    Regards,

    D

Has anyone noticed loose left (or right) click buttons? Recieved my X1C 3 days ago and the left click button seems pretty loose, to the point where it rattles if I move my finger over it. Clicking it is noticebly louder than right one.

Any chance this is possible to fix without sending it back?

I actually just ordered another one, being that I can't find any other cases of people reporting this.

Mine has that same rattle, sounds like it's coming from the left palm rest? I actually opened it up today and I think it's actually the battery. There's two screws that hold it in up top by the mobo, and two on the sides towards the upper half, no screws on the bottom. The bottom does seem to move a bit.

Please let me know if they manage to fix it, and what the cause it! I'm very curious.
