    Thank you for valuable suggestion.

I like the X201s so much, because its light weight, better screen resolution and battery life.

The only thing that I concerned is the x201s does not support WWAN. Do you know if I can get a mini PCI Gobi 2000 card to install to X201s? I don't know why the Lenovo would rather put a Legacy modem but not a WWAN card to their top of the line model.

The X201s and X201t use the sample 25W i7 640LM but review from the Laptopmag.com indicating the 5 hours 10 minutes for X201t and 8 hours 31 minutes for X201s. Their difference is 3 hour and 21 minutes. It is reason why I hope the owner of 201T in the forum can tell me his actual experience of the battery consumption. If I can not have any answer for the battery life, I think I will pick the X201s.

the links for the X201T/S reviews:

    http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-x201-tablet.aspx
    http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-x201s.aspx

Durazing: I paid $699 for the drive plus $4 S&H for the Crucial C300 SSD 256GB.

Personally, unless you desire the added versatility of a tablet (which I love) or the superior display quality (albeit lower resolution) then the price premium for the tablet model is probably not justified.

The x200s had less antennas (3x3 WLAN and NO WWAN) than the x200 (2x2 WLAN [webcam models] and 2x2 WWAN) or the x200T (3x3 WLAN [w/ or w/o cam] and 2x2 WWAN in a plastic riser). For this reason the x200s does not natively support internal WWAN. I am almost positive the situation is the same on the x201 series.

Some users did install aftermarket WWAN on the x200s. I believe this required a modified BIOS from Zender (use the search tool and you should find it). Full details in the thread but it involved re-purposing some of the WLAN antennas to the WWAN modem. However, there is no guarantee this same hack will be repeatable on the x201s (although I suspect it will in time).

Is there a particular reason why a USB or ExpressCard WWAN will NOT work? I certainly appreciate the idea of having it internal, but a lot of people use external ones.

You might have to wait a while to get good battery life numbers for the x201T. I don't believe anyone on this forum has received one yet. However, it should be the same situation as the x200s/x200T in which the tablet consumes very nearly the same number of watts but only lasts 78.5% as long due to the smaller battery.

    Hi jonlumpkin,

After I read your information, I made my decision to order the X201T. I currently have an external Sprint 3G USB modem. The device is not only droping the connection very often but working under very bad performance. Since I rely on the 3G WWAN helping me to support my users (remote access and Skype calls), I hope the new laptop will overcome the 3G issue.

I may take the risk of the short battery life of X201T but exchange of handwriting (in Chinese) and internal 3G WWAN. Unfortunately, I have to sacrify the screen resolution.

    Thank you again.

There is one option: the Intel 6250 card support WiMAX 3.5G WWAN (IEEE 802.16) without requiring a WWAN card or additional WWAN antennas (the 6250 is also a 802.11a/g/n WLAN card and it uses WLAN antennas). In the US, Sprint and ClearWire offers WiMAX service in a few areas; if you happen to live in one of those areas, you can get WWAN service on X201s with WXGA+ screen.

    Just a thought.

Just let you know that I have ordered the X201T, the spec is:

LenovoThinkPad X201 Intel Core i7-640LM 2.13GHz Tablet - 2GB RAM, 250GB SATA HDD, 12.1" WXGA TFT MultiTouch Display, No Optical Drive, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g/n wireless, WWAN Upgradeable

I ordered it because it costs only $1849 plus $152.54(sales tax) = $2001.54. It is a lot of cheaper than Lenovo site.

The spec. is very basic but I had ordered the Crucial C300 256GB drive. The rest of parts that I will upgrade, are 2GB RAM and Gobi 2000 WWAN card.

I have just received my x201s this evening and have already run some tests

    Here it comes

    3D mark 2006
1511 (Wolfenstein Enemy Territory runs smoothly, that's all I need :)
    CPU 2466

    Superpi 1.5
    1M 15.647S
    2M 38.220s

    wPrime
    32M 27.16s

The screen is rather good, very blue and the contrast on the low side though.

The battery life seems to be 10h+ with win7 64, I hope to get 12h+ with winXP

    The speaker works !!!!

The computer gets warm under load, as warm as my T60p under load. I assume that under load it uses the turboboost effect hence increasing the heat.

Here is the config I ordered:

What kinda battery life are you x201s owners getting? I have a 6-cell, and I'm not getting anywhere near the claimed 7 hour battery life. I'm hovering around 5.5 hours. For comparison's sake, would you mind sharing your idle wattage and how long your x201s serves you on battery? Thanks.

Unfortunately, MacMall cancelled my order and send me with following notice:

"We apologize for the inconvenience but your online order for the TP X201 I7-640LM/2GB/250/12.1/W7P/TAB LENOVO was automatically cancelled by our system. We were informed today by the manufacturer that our purchase order was cancelled. According to them the item is End Of Life already with no direct replacement."

@josibarns: Does your x201s 9 cell battery life really get 10+ hours with actual working? If it is, I will consider to get this model. Please advice.

I'm the one who posted that. You get 10+ hours with brightness at the minimum and working on a word file.

I brightness is set at 6 and you do internet browsing and word typing the battery life goes down to 8:30 hours

I have to say that it is really disappointing but on the other hand the i7 is really fast

I'm hoping that either Microsoft, Intel or Lenovo will figure out a patch to reduce the power consumption while on battery.

I am myself trying to write a powershell script to deactivate some win7 services automatically when the laptop is unplugged. I might need a little help to identify which services draw most of the power.

If you mean the Lenovo Enhanced Experience, then yes.

Thanks for reply. Even 8:30 hours are great. My Macbook Pro can only last about 2:40 hours only. If install a SSD and disable some window service, the unit may even better. How about the x201s weight with 9 cell battery? Is it less than 4 pounds?

Not sure if anyone posted this yet, but apparently the right-speaker-not-working issue on the X201 is a software problem, not hardware. Lenovo has released a fixed driver that can be downloaded from their website here.

@josibarns: Cool, thanks for the pictures - looks very nice! :)

FYI, today, you cannot upgrade CPU from i5 to i7 with ThinkPad X201 laptop with integrated graphics and Enhanced ThinkPad X201 laptop with integrated graphics option. You can only have i7 with Elite ThinkPad X201 laptop with integrated graphics option.

    What's going on with Lenovo???

Intel cites higher speed capability (450mbps vs 300mbps) and "additional performance optimizations" for the 6300 versus the 6200. I'm not sure if these are solely the result of an additional antenna (which I don't have, at the expense of the webcam), but it was only a small difference in price, so whatever. Does anyone know any other differences between the wireless card options?

It sounds like you'd like the T410 more than any X-series.

    ===

The touch x20_T are fantastic for presentations because the presenter can keep things interesting doing a John Madden impersonation. It's really remarkable how well hand diagrams liven up a Q&A.

As I understand things, I would need the ultrabay to run display port. Do the X200T & X201T display port implementations support HDMI sound? Over the next several years, I expect presentations will make better use of sounds and HDTV interfaces.

Received my new x201T last week, with SuperBright Outdoor screen. It was the only reason I bought the tablet! I actually called Lenovo customer service to confirm that SuperBright is also Multitouch, but it's not!!! (duh)

I haven't put it through the paces yet, but have some first impressions (a la noob)

I love the bright screen, but dang, it's tiny after working on a 15.4 T60 widescreen for the last 3 years.

It's a wee bit noisy - the fan runs constantly and there's a very tiny high pitched "whine". Disclaimer: I work alone, and so hear *everything*.

    Log On/Shut Down IS fast.

My battery is busted out of the box. it won't charge. need to call and get it fixed. Yay Lenovo!

I think I have two speakers, both working. :)

Build quality and keyboard are happily legendary Lenovo quality!

Same here. My 8-cell (or whatever the larger battery size is) only charges to ~44% then stops. Courier's coming to replace it in the next hour :)

Then all I need is my SSD to arrive, and the near-perfect laptop will be ready to use!

Coming from an x200s, I agree with you. That system was silent with an SSD and this one always has the fan running at 3k rpm. It also runs hotter, unfortunately. The additional heat and fan noise are my only issues with the system (related of course).

To compensate, I'm picking up a ThermaPAD and plan to use tpfancontrol to restrict the fan from kicking in until 65-70C. It's well within operating temps but it's otherwise uncomfortable to rest on your lap, which is the reason for the cooling pad. We'll see how that goes.

Why am I not able to see the X201 tablet on the Lenovo US site? Which of the tablet screen option is the better IPS one?

Also, how is the heat and noise on the standard X201 with i5 540M processor? How is the X201 LED screen?

    Thank you

    Hi sfoanna, samuel337,

Regarding the battery charging issue: Have you tried to update the BIOS yet?
It looks like version 1.09 might resolve this issue:

    Version 1.09-1.06/1.06
    BIOS: 1.09 / ECP: 1.06/1.06

(New) Added support for ThinkPad X201i.
(Fix) Fixed an issue that Disabling Intel AMT option in the BIOS Setup menu did not function correctly.
(Fix) Fixed an issue where battery authentication might be failed.

Only thing is that the 9 cell for the X201 has more stored power than the 9 cell for the X200. Everything else is the same.

It seems like 9 cell for X201 has 94Wh while X200 only has 85Wh.

Does anybody know about the manufacturers of all X201 parts (RAM, HDD, etc.)?
And does the Ultrabase include DVDRW already because as I see in this video below, the Ultrabase doesn't have DVD?

finally i'm getting my x201 next next week, I just noticed that the new x201 does not have any firewire connections on it. I havent tried this but I heard when firewire is faster rather than USB. What if I buy an additional express card for Firewire800 will this make a difference with the USB connection? Thanks

I've had a 201s for about a week and I'm noticing some missed keystrokes in what I type. I type quite fast and use several keyboards regularly including other thinkpad X series. It's very irritating. I'll have to send back the machine. Has anyone had anything like this on this machine?

I was just about to post this :)

sfoanna: Don't bother with the battery replacement; it likely isn't the battery's fault. I had mine replaced, but didn't fix the problem.

The BIOS update however, seems to fix it. My battery immediately started charging again after I rebooted from the flashing program; before that, it was stuck at 33% with 'no activity'.

Seems odd that the BIOS update isn't available via System Update yet - you'll need a USB CD drive to boot and install the update from the ISO.

I now have another problem - the webcam intermittently disconnects itself, resulting in a 'USB device not recognized' message. This has occurred even while Windows was running :(

Has anyone here burned the Lenovo Recovery files to a DVD to make Lenovo Recovery DVDs? How many DVDs did it use to do this? I think mine is requiring 1 for the Boot Disc and 2 for the Data Discs.

What is the difference between the boot disc and the data disc?
