Oh I apologize. The few videos show the HP on the right and Lenovo on the left.

hey everyone, already received my y580 on friday. so far, it's pretty amazing (for me, since it's a huge upgrade from my previous laptop)

the quick pros: GREAT sound for a laptop, very sturdy feeling, no flex on the system, backlit keyboard is neat and works well with the led lights, graphics are amazing, maxed out everything in diablo3 at native resolution (non HD screen) and gets high fps, not sure exactly what because showFPS is broken in latest 1.0.3 patch.

con so far: touchpad is a downgrade from ASUS experiences, will take me some time to get used to

other than that, i can answer any questions

 the Lenovo sounds so much better than the hp and the hp had 4 speakers + a sub woofer i think i can live with the high HDD temps so its between this or the new dell XPS ... but i need to find out if lenovo had support in the Caribbean first cuz id hate to have to pay shipping just to get my laptop serviced

The surround effect on the Y580 is lovely but no bass. The HP has amazing bass

You'd be surprised..the builds are quite similar between the machines. I had the same assumption about HP. Although, the DV6 I'm comparing is the replacement unit of the original

No laptop has "amazing" bass. Yes, it's nice to have decent speakers but I think anyone who cares about audio quality will use decent speakers or decent headphones.

I feel like a lot of the aspects of both machines being discussed are trivial. The greatest laptop speakers are the greatest only in relative terms. Not something anyone should use as a major deciding factor.

lol I apologize "OK BASS". I was saying that in comparison to the Y580 which it is "amazing" when compared to the bass projected from the Y580

And yes, I agree with your second statement but it's nice to see it as a selling point. It is just a normal comparison between the two similar units. I think it will help some to choose. I'm just nitpicky about my laptops especially if I'm spending a pretty penny on it.

Of course. I know everything matters with this kind of purchase but for the parts, these are somewhat budget laptops. Especislly after coupon codes. You have to take a hit somewhere. It's not an excuse, but sometimes it is worth it to get the extended warranty. Mine is three years.

Everyone complains about apple products being too expensive (which they are) but their build quality is incredible. Same thing with some of the thinkpads Lenovo makes. The parts on the inside can be similar or even worse in some cases, but they are more expensive. Sometimes you do pay for quality.

Why do you think so many PC manufacturers are struggling? Especially HP, who were possibly going to sell off their entire consumer grade manufacturing division? It's because there are such small margins on windows based computers. Everyone is trying to go lower than the other guy and sometimes the quality takes a hit somewhere.

I think most people are to some degree. Everyone wants their money to be well spent.

Think of it this way. MacBook pros with a 650m start at $1800. Those also have half as much ram. We are getting great performance at a very good price.

Enjoy your machine and don't let some minor quality issues ruin your experience :)

Here's my dilemma though: I need to choose between the Y580 and the DV6T by tomorrow night. #firstworldproblems

Nice video comparsions. Both excel at some areas so more or less both are great screens. You can do one last comparison for texts and still images like wallpapers. Use nature shots as animated pictures are designed to be bright.

So far, the Y580 excels better at darker videos while DV6 is better in brighter videos. Almost same comparison for plasma and LED TVs.

That's the glossy vs matte argument right there. Really depends what you're into. I play alot of D3 and watch movies so I think the Y580 is better suited for me. It'll be a good work horse.

I'll take some pics tomorrow and post 'em. See what people think! Overall, I think the Lenovo is a great unit. Great power and gets the job done well.

I've decided to keep the Lenovo *Cheers*

I like the feel of the keyboard. It feels of higher quality where as the HP keyboard feels like a standard one. I'm scared the HP will crap out in a year so I might as well keep the Lenovo

Anyone know if (and when) the Y480N will be available in the US?

Edit: Also, any update on when the 640M LE driver will be updated? Apparently it was supposed to be June - but usually when stuff doesn't happen the release date becomes never.

I'd really like the Y480, but the 640M LE is reported to perform near 630M level without the proper drivers. Does anyone have any alternatives for 14" Ivy Bridge non-ultrabooks? The Y480 seems to be a monopoly right now without Dell/HP/Asus intervention.

Thanks for that, though the XPS 14 along with the 14z both require that ultrabook premium that the Y480 doesn't. I'd consider a 14R or HP's response to the Y480, but the 14R isn't Ivy Bridge yet and HP's dv4t goes over $1000 for a similar configuration as the Y480.

I really wish the Y480 had some kind of competition to bring down the price, although it's already really good.

Probably the truest thing I've read today (and today is almost done). Too bad we don't hold companies accountable for promising the moon and the stars at CES (or whichever tech show), but delivering only a fraction of it in the following 12 months. :(

EDIT: forgive my cynicism, but the fact that the timeline reads...(a) Y480 lead-up/teaser = "comes with 650m/660m", then (b) Y480 launch = 640m, then (c) "woops, we meant to say 640m LE", then (d) LE quietly "disappears", and most recently (e) "LE" quietly reappears...suggests to me they are having very serious component-supply issues.

Just a quick followup -- I guess I'm advertising this one as a "gotcha" but I just noticed for the first time what seems like an obvious misprint:

    IdeaPad Y480 14" Laptop | Shop | Lenovo | (US)

I had to rub my eyes, but does that image say "3.74 lbs+" Hmmm, really? Which Y480 configuration runs under 4 pounds? I guess the simple explanation is "this is a label from another machine" but still...dumb mistake.

Shipment delayed until 09/07 :in the uk (. Another 10 days before its even sent out then 3 or 4 for shipping... bah!

Its "experiencing delays in the building process" apparently...
Should have waited till it was out in stores in UK instead of going direct through manufacturer... my entire experience with that website has been terrible so far.

(Also to warn others, its still listing 4-5 days shipping.)

As much as I wish that would happen, as someone commented earlier, the 650M on the Y480 is probably vaporware by now. If it will come out, it'll probably be a new product called the Y480N, which I found in china after some searching. Meaning it'll probably be more expensive.

Rather than waiting, I decided to look to the Dell 15R SE for it's relatively low price and 1080p screen.

Does anyone with the FHD Y580 running Firefox see html links as purple rather than blue? A good example are the thread links here at notebookreview. Even usernames have a purplish tinge rather than blue.

The only drivers that you need to take care of by yourself are nVidia's. Get newest from their website. Other are either newest possible or will be updated automatically with Windows Update (Intel graphic for sure).

But I have question related to what you're asking: drivers for realtek sound card. Are there some alternative or maybe just newer that I'm not aware of? Control panel for sound card is quite...poor...

The second partition visible in wndows will have all the drivers and software you need.

To check if there are new drivers, go to the Lenovo support page and search for the 580.

For the most part, everything on that partition is up to date.

Are you guys getting better performance with the newer Nvidia drivers for the gtx 660m? I'm still using the stock video driver that came with the laptop since I'm afraid if I update it the performance for some of my games will be adversely affected. I believe someone in this thread posted earlier that this had happened to them.

Here's another comparison of LCD panels.

This time it's the Envy 17 vs the Y580. They seem similar but the Envy has a blue tinge to it. I did not alter any of the color settings on either laptop
