lol are u talking about the acer 15 in that came out with the 640m? if so that has a low res screen. I am getting 1.5k from my university towards a laptop for my engineering classes/labs
I wanna use as much of that budget as possible
------
edit nvm good find for me +repI do like it its just that its acer and the screen size is lower :| I like that there is a thunderbolt port so perfect for egpu but idt it will work for what I have in mind thanks tho!
-
I don't know if this has been mentioned but they have the Y480 on the floor at Fry's, at least they did at mine (Fountain Valley, CA).
It had a i7-3610QM and GTX 640m. -
Stand corrected on the acer S5- no nvidia card.
-
I have a Lenovo discount through work, so I'm waiting for the 580 to be up for sale on shop.lenovo. I just hope they don't gimp the GPU in the 580 like they did the 570.
-
well still looks pretty slick
-
the hd 4000 scores more than the gt 525m-

Good for both y480 and y580. -
Sweet - to quote some of the important things found inside the manual:
- Battery pack, 3S2P, 6cell 72Wh, LG L11L6R01 3S2P 72Wh battery Comm03 (Y480)
- Battery pack, 6cell 72Wh, Pana L11P6R01 3S2P 72Wh battery Comm03 (Y480)
- Battery pack, 6cell 72Wh, Sony L11N6R01 3S2P 72Wh battery Comm03 (Y480)
- Solid-state drive , mSATA 64G, Micron C400 64G
mSATA SSD (Y480) - There is an msata Slot leading to a possible combo of msata SSD, 1GB 2,5 HDD and bluray odd - Panel, 14.0W Glare, AUO B140XW03 V0 (Y480) 18003943 - all panels are glare panels but there are matte versions of the displays B140XW03
- Panel, 14.0W Glare, AUO B140XTN03 V0 4A HD G
LED1 NB LCD (Y480)

- Panel, 14.0W Glare, CMI N140BGE-L42 (Y480)
All this makes me really consider this notebook(big battery, replacing the glare screen or even upgrading to something like this found here) for a future purchase. Now it all depends on the different combinations Lenovo will offer. I would really like a GF650 GDDR5... -
Share your experience in finding the right 1600x900 match for this laptop- tried looking at the different screens that matches the model number, and they are all at 1366x768. I would also upgrade the screen as the LCDs are cheap enough around $60-70.
-
Screencountry emailed me back concerning a possible screen replacement for the y480 and the need the actual screen model name from the lcd- I will disassemble the lcd screen this weekend to get it's model number. I'll try calling lenovo tech support first.
-
Emailed them the panel specs in the manual- let's see if they have something.
-
Well, now wait a tick. On the official Lenovo website they state (under the "DO List") that the options for the graphics on the 480 are GT 650M and GTX 660M. Dang, I was thinking the 480 with a 660 and a 1600 x 900 screen would be worth it. At home, I hook up to a 1080p HDTV, so the GPU really does matter.
Guess I'm going 15.6". Again. :/ -
I bought this as not configurable at tigerdirect- I am sure that when it is released offically on Lenovo's website- you will have more options. I know I am jumping the gun and not getting exactly what I want- but I just do moderate gaming. Your system is good enough until Haswell comes out.
-
Negative on the screen for 1600x900 for the specs that I emailed. I am sure they would get compatible screens in a month or two after the wide release of the Y480. Shucks!
-
Too bad for that screen, that would've been nice. While I'm sure my hardware would last for a while, I like to refresh every year or so. Resale is horrid on PCs and parts, so I have to sell this one while it still has some value.
-
Hear you loudly on this one- don't you have a pcie-mini slot on the bottom for an egpu setup?
-
AlwaysSearching Notebook Evangelist
I think the "Do List" is the Y580 specs. -
Just talked to a Lenovo rep-said the official release of the y480 is pushed to May?
-
It is usually the intel 1000 wifi card they have with these- will double check and go shopping for an intel 6200 card- the unit only has two antennas.
-
-
Okay I am confused
Will the Y480 be coming Nvidia 650M video card, or is Nvidia 640M the best video card I can get for the laptop.
Thanks -
According to Lenovo- it would be configurable with the 650m- now with ddr3 or ddr 5 who knows? The 640m I am getting is with ddr5 that speed it up to almost 650m levels without OC.
-
FMruss could u post some comments about heat/noise(idle & under load), quality of screen & keyboard, noise of keyboard and trackpad?
I am in need of a notebook for univeristy so a noisy machine wouln't be ideal... -
Looking at the 470p forums would also help on this one- I'll be getting the machine on Friday- will do my review on a Saturday then without doing upgrades on it yet.
On the former forums, the 460 and 470s does have heating problems. We will see how the temps are on this- but I suspect the heat issues would be gone or very minimal based on other reviews of systems with the gt 640m. -
I just picked up the laptop you are getting on Friday and it seems that Lenovo has pulled a fast one. The GPU is not Kepler but is Fermi based....exactly what notebookcheck is talking about when they state:
Watch out: Following rumors, there will also be a Fermi-based version (96 shaders, 762 MHz, DDR3/GDDR5, similar to 550M/555M) with a probably higher power consumption than the Kepler variant.
That is what is in this model.... -
Card is very overclockable though....I was able to overclock it enough to get 13K in 3dmark06. Still pretty bummed on it being Fermi based!

If that is the GT 640 LE, Tigerdirect pulled a fast one on me as they have it marked as GT 640. I thought it was the Kepler based one. Oh well, I am going to refuse delivery on this one and wait a tad longer. I am in no hurry. Maybe I can get it speced out the way I want to with Lenovo with the 650M and hopefully an improved screen or jump to a y580. Maybe the Thinkpad S430 would be out be then which would even be better with thunderbolt. But still the OC is quite good and for a mid-level entry card, 13K is a nice showing. What more of the actual Kepler variant?
Sorry folks, no review.
Perhaps mithcellba you can do a short one for us. The GT 640 LE is a very big disappointment though. -
They killed Kenny!!!
-
Not quite sure as far a returning it, would probably have to eat a 15% restock fee...ugggg! Hope this helps others out there that were looking at this notebook to make sure they know what they are getting. All in all it still is a very nice notebook, I am just feeling a bit slighted by Lenovo with regards to the 640 card, basically all they did was add Ivy Bridge and the old card from the Y570 model....
-
-
Yeah it has the new Ivy in it. I was thinking of going the route of false advertisement for the return, there is also a bit of extreme flex with the keyboard that I could possibly go with as well possibly a defective keyboard
-
Tigerdirect website would not allow a refund just exchange but the trick is to refuse delivery or if UPS leaves it on your front door, do not open it and have it returned to sender at no cost.
-
AlwaysSearching Notebook Evangelist
and they don't even list performance chart for it.
The 640LE w/ddr5 up to 29G bandwith. 640 w/ddr5 up to 64G. So at least
they are very comparable.
Crappy bait and switch because there is no kepler available and
who knows when they may really show up.
Between nvidia and intel this has been a super frustrating several
months and at least another couple to go.
Sb and rebadge is looking better and better. -
BTW the Tigerdirect is the exact same model, I checked just to make sure because I was going to order through them as well but then it became available locally so I picked it up instead. Both model numbers are exactly the same so whatever you do don't accept delivery.....
-
Thanks, just called Tigerdirect and they said just to refuse delivery and they will issue a refund. Told them they should have an accurate description of the gpu and it was not as advertised on their website.
-
Shoot, I already ordered a 240 SSD, HD caddy, and external DVD enclosure.
I'll keep it handy for a Y580 or Thinkpad S430. -
I would return that unit- it is not as advertised - it is the 640 LE and not the kepler 640. They should have put the LE in it and for sure you would not have bothered picking it up.
-
ya go for it guys lol and hold on to that ssd it will come in handy soon
. ima buy a 200+gb one also after i buy my laptop gonna wait it out along wiht my laptop cause ssd prices are droping
-
Yup- with rebate I got the OCZ Vertex Plus 240 at $170 with rebate. The reviews are mixed but that is why warranties are important.
-
-
What GPU is going to be in that Edge? Thunderbolt is enticing.
-
what edge?
-
thinkpad S430 with thunderbolt -thin profile -with nvidia graphics- 14" upgraded screen with slot dvd-rw
-
-
So no one believes the DO List for the y480? I am I a fool to believe that the 660m will be an option?
-
-
-
Is the official Launch Date on IBm website for the y480 April 29?
So long to wait to get my hands on this laptop -
Take from it what you will, as the rep's name was foreign and obviously this is a level 1 rep
