I'm supposed to get mine on thursday as well but haven't gotten a shipment email yet. Estimated arrival still says the 21st. I probably won't be getting it![]()
I have two flash drives. One with a bootable copy of windows 7 home premium and the other with all the drivers off the Lenovo driver page for the 580.
Going to back up my activation using ABR, do the clean install and then restore my activation.
The only thing I'm worried about is some of the software that comes pre installed. I know most of it is junk but some is probably useful. don't know where to find the setup files for those programs. I read that they might be in the drivers folder with the drivers that ship with the laptop but I'm not sure.

can somebody tell me if the y 580 got big cooling problems? Are the 58.6C after running FurMark normal for a notebook?
Thanks for help -
Here you read check new review of Y580, final unit with i7 and 64GB mSATA SSD, use google chrome auto translate from CZECH to whatever you understand
Even with Furmark and Prime 95 running it works fine, reaches max 88 on CPU and 80 on GPU. And that is more load than any game can create. Notebook is getting pretty warm in keyboard area, but not keys only spaces between them, to me it looks like aluminium cover is spreading heat from internals
You can say, that cooling is on par with MSI and Asus N series and bit worse than Asus G series -
Damn it. My order still says it was supposed to ship on the 15th and arrive on the 21st.
They still haven't shipped it and I definitely wont be getting it on the 21st.
This is annoying. -
I just talked with Lenovo support and they said the ship dates and delivery estimates shouldn't be given much credence as they are auto-generated. He said there are no problems with my order and it will ship this week and that I should just watch out for the email that says it shipped (even though the estimated ship date for me is June 28th on the order status website). Let's hope he's right!

(Also posted in the Lenovo Y480 forum)
As of this morning Lenovo has removed the LE designation from their listing page:
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...-category-id=C7563337D3E07CC4B84607F2E57AE7FD...
However, the PDF spec sheet (naturally) is unchanged:
http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/pdf/system_data/y480_tech_specs.pdf
As always, we'll have to wait for a lucky new Y480 owner to confirm if it really is the true 640m -- and if it's Kepler, even better!

yea 58.6c seems good to me there are notebooks that can go higher ...... as much as 90 i think .......

Hold the press. I just looked on Lenovo's UK site and behold: Notebook computers - IdeaPad Y580 - United Kingdom (UK) | Lenovo | (GB)
Looks like the sales rep I talked to on the phone WAS talking BS. -
Just got my Y580 in the mail. Actually typing it out with it right now! It's a pretty sweet machine.
-
90 C sounds like heavy injury
or are we talking about fahrenheit
-
Haha, as you may tell from the other thread I'm having mixed feelings of joy and being very very annoyed by this news
. Don't know what to get now?!
-
Ok people, big descision.. Is it worth an extra £150 to upgrade from the lower res screen, dvd player and dual core i5 to get the higher res, blueray and quad core i7
-
DVD -> Bluray *not really
Core i5 -> Core i7 **definitely yes
lowres -> hires ***absolutely yes!
-Matt -
Ok ok, slightly different / bigger question. GT650m vs GTX660m?
(I am DETERMINED to order my laptop tonight! So sick of looking
haha)
-
Ah, that's a lot more of a personal choice. My sense is "go for the 650m" if you only play games 1-2 times per week, and can live with low-med settings, or "go for the 660m" if you play daily and really want high/ultra.
-Matt -
Hmm. I do play relatively regularly... But for me its more in terms of "futureproofing".. not really an option with mobile GPU I know... but if I buy a laptop today I would prefer it to be able to manage playing a game that comes out in two years at lowest possible settings...
-
Well, remember that my 13-year-old is the heavy gamer in the house, but coming from me...as long as the early-version 660m is a solid build (or any issues are addressed in driver updates) I'd be pretty confident for 2 years. And if you treat your laptops well, I'd expect you could get a 3rd year of gameplay out of it too.
Now how you'll FEEL when the next-gen video cards are announced is another matter! Anyway, here is what notebookcheck has to say:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
-Matt -
Thanks for all the help! I have finally ordered
.
To be honest I had been looking at / waiting for this model for quite awhile. Only reason I moved away from it was the conflicting reports I kept getting from sales people about its UK availability.
I went for the extra money and got the £999 model. In the end I thought the upgrades you get for the price made it worth it for me.
It should last me a good while anyway, I tend to treat my notebooks well. The HP I'm currently using is 5 years old and still just about running despite being grossly outdated now... though the monitor is definitely on its way out.
Anyway, estimated shipping in 4-5 days...
.
-
Congrats! So please "pay it forward" (I'm just behind you in the shopping queue) and let us know what you think!
-Matt -
Sadly the ship date actually means I will be away when it arrives! I will be on here as soon I get my hands on it though
.
-
Can the lucky people who have received their machines possibly give as some more in depth impressions? Its like torture waiting for mine
-
I definitely will if I ever get the damn thing. Hopefully next week. Should get my shipping email tomorrow.
You might have yours by then but I'll be doing a little review when I get mine. -
I'll try to do a bit of a review when I get mine, but after sitting in KY for 3 days so far I just got the "Your package has been warehoused until it clears customs" notification on UPS - hope I don't have to wait long. And the 256gb mSATA SSD I ordered for it seems to have been lost in the mail (shipped from NY to OH 11 days ago and no tracking updates other than "It has left our sort facility" back on the 9th. My shipping experience isn't going well for this laptop so far
-
Damn. That's unfortunate.
My order status page just updated and says that it shipped yesterday, but I haven't received an email and there is no tracking number on the status page.
Time to talk to Lenovo. Again.
Edit : I realized that the status page wasn't reliable at all, but I thought that if it said that it shipped, it actually would have. According to the Lenovo guy I spoke to, it is "in the process to ship out within 24-48 hours".
I really hope going with Lenovo was worth it because the overall experience hasn't been great. Especially with their terrible updates regarding everything from the purchase to shipping.
I got the 3 year warranty, but hopefully I wont have to use it because I don't even want to think about how long they would take to handle that kind of situation. -
Does this have intel widi (wireless display)?
-
Mine took two days after the original notification for there to be an update on the UPS site. That notification is basically the same as the USPS "We've been electronically notified an item is going to be shipped and will pick it up soon. Here's your tracking number". As for their warranty, I've had nothing but good luck in the past. I've had to use it twice personally (for members of my family) and they overnight a box to you to ship the machine back to them, the box itself has a label to overnight it back to them, and then once it's fixed (for me it was the next day once and two days the other time) it gets overnighted back to you again. So maybe a week max. If you know a Lenovo repair center near you they can normally get parts the next day (or may have them on hand) and repair it the same day they have the parts for you (the shop I used to work for was a Lenovo repair center).
Update on my shipping: it's already had the import scan done and is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. -
According to the Tech Specs sheet on the Lenovo site it does, but when you go to pick/customize a model there is no mention of it. So I'm not sure as to whether it does or not.
-
STILL no word on the Y480 650M?
-
That's reassuring. Hopefully I wont have to use the warranty, just feels good to know it's there for the next three years.
Definitely saw it mentioned somewhere, but I think it's a bit pointless. Yes, it's convenient but I've read all sorts of issues regarding compatibility and connection problems. It's nice if you can get it to work, but definitely has some lag from what you are doing on your laptop to when it shows up on your TV.
While not quite as convenient, it's better to get yourself an hdmi cable and use it to directly hook your laptop up to your tv. It's significantly cheaper as well considering that those wireless display adapters range anywhere from $70 to $150. A high quality hdmi cable that is 15-20 feet long is less than $20 on monoprice.
It's a perfect connection. I can't wait to play some Diablo 3 on my 55 inch plasma
-
I'm thinking it's vaporware at this point. Given how long it took the Y480 to go from 640m LE to plain old 640m (almost 2 months?), I wouldn't hold my breath.
FWIW: anyone thinking about the midlevel model # 209388U ($1399, 1TB & DVD), remember that the coupon code USPY4880607 is still good and knocks it down to $800. With the "updated" 640m that's not a bad price at all.
-Matt -
Can this laptop be used for university? or is this too heavy?
And is the weight 5.95 lb or is it 6.2 lb?
Is MSI GE60 much more lighter then this? What would you guys choose if laptop was gonna be used for University, Browsing and watching Videos? -
I'm buying this to be used next year up at my university. It doesn't seem too big or heavy, but thats just me. Honestly its all in your opinion. Best thing to do would be to go to best buy and check out the Y570 that they have there. If that seems ok to be brought around everywhere then your good to go with this one. If it seems to big though then look at something smaller.
If I get a model without the 32gb ssd is there going to be a msata port where I can buy one and put it in? -
Based on the tear-downs I've seen (this is a Y480) it looks like both models come with two slots, one occupied by the wifi card (lower-left corner):
EDIT: and if you REALLY want to see the details, here is the maintenance guide (check out pp. 42-43):
http://consumerdl.lenovo.com.cn/Use...480&Y580 Hardware Maintenance Manual V1.0.pdf
-Matt -
Sorry, I've never even used a mssd before. Does that mean that there is a slot where I could put one in?
-
Yep, I assume it's in the far bottom left corner. The maintenance guide mentions a TV card, but I assume neither the 480/580 come with it. BUT what would be nice is if an owner (who doesn't have the mSSD option) could pop theirs open and confirm. Since we're looking at a Y489 in the pic, the second, open slot might not be accessible. But EVERYTHING I've heard so far suggests it's a matter of "open back" and "insert card"!

I just got a brand new laptop through dell the 15z its the most expensive one on the dell website with the ssd drive (1599 - XPS 15z Laptop Details | Dell Canada ) I was thinking about getting this instead and selling my 15z? the 3rd gen i7 and the new graphics card on the y580 seem tempting. Would this be worth it?
-
How much do you game, umirza85? And what types of games are you playing?
Notebook check has the Dell's Nvidia 525m being 151st in it's list while the 660m in the y580 as 44th.
Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List - Notebookcheck.net Tech -
That 15z was definitely not meant for gaming. Even with that low end card, the keyboard still torches your hands after an hourly gaming session
-
So yesterday I received the bill for my Y480 in the mail - but no 480 has arrived yet
-
Patience is a virtue.
-
My 580 is finally on its way. Should be here on Monday. Can't wait
-
I wouldnt say im a hardcore gamer, I'll play maybe twice or three times a week and I dont really mind playing at a lower resolution at medium settings. Usually just play when I'm at work and have an hour to kill between meetings. I would like to play games like Arma II, Skyrim, Max Payne 3, & Diablo III. I would still like the games to run smooth. I didnt realize that the 525m was so low in the list.
The 15z is a beautiful laptop and the screen is amazing. Perfect for business environment where I hate the screen size/brightness on my ThinkPad T420 (Though what a ridiculously amazing battery life it can get)
So would I be better off selling the 15z for a IdeaPad Y580? i was just thinking size/weight wise how different are they?
Also what about warranty with lenovo, when my studio 15 bit the dust dell came and fixed it 4 times - asides from the fact they had to come 4 times, there was no hassles at all. The new Dell warranty support is actually pretty good. -
Lucky! I ordered mine on the 11th and the estimated SHIPPING DATE is still June 28th!! AHHHH!
-
My girlfriend just texted me and said my Y480 has arrived!!! AHHHHH!!! Wish i didn't have to finish off the day at work!
What do I do with it first?!?!? -
Multiple cat videos on youtube in HD at the same time
-
It's annoying, but you should probably spend some time cleaning and optimizing. Remove all the bloatware, update windows and install all the programs you personally need.
Doesn't take much, but starting fresh and taking care of your laptop will keep things running smoothly.
This is a good guide. Don't worry about the advanced stuff.

Great, I'll give it a look. Thanks!
-
Have you recieved yours yet because mine just got to KY and I got the same notice as warehoused. Did you still meet your original delivery date as set by ups, because mine is tomorrow and I'm worried after reading your post.
-
So I'm typing this on my new 480 which just came today! However, I was suprised that it doesn't come with a windows disk. What happens if one day I want to format???
-
Damn. I had forgotten about that. With the way things have gone, I'm going to go ahead and forget getting mine on Monday
Very few laptops come with windows discs these days. I think Lenovos have that restore feature tied to that hardware button next to the power button. That will let you create back up discs or restore back to factory settings. If you want to do a clean install, you will have to back up your activation using ABR, do a fresh windows install and then reactivate with the files that ABR created.
Upcoming Y480/Y580 series feat. Ivy Bridge and NVIDIA graphics!
