Good points there if it really is a FireGL GPU.
However the ISV drivers from lenovo didn't detect the GPU and install in the W500 so I'm not sure whether I really have a FireGL in my W500. The BIOS fixed the mis-identification problem though : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=316204

Hey veemexx, what exactly is going on with your computer?
-
The computer is working, it's just not with the ISV drivers and the GPU device ID just doesn't match the Device ID from ATI's website. So right now i'm going to adopt a wait and see approach.....

Keep us posted, if possible.

Well someone finally knocked some sense into Lenovo. The T500 is now priced similar to the T400. =)
So the argument that W500 is cheaper than T500 is no longer valid. -
Considering there is no real difference between the two at the moment, it's hard to justify any price difference...
-
Well for the systems I have configured the W500 dropped about $50 as well but I think the T500 price dropped about $200-$250 with today's price adjustment.
-
The T500 price definitely went down considerably. Wow.

As far as I know, there is a switch to turn off the ionizer if you don't need it, so I guess it has nothing to do with the cooling system. But, yes, it IS funny to have that in a laptop.

My roommate just got an Asus and it's a high-powered beauty. What I've noticed is that the keyboard has much flex and the touchpad is pretty bad. Other than that, however, it's a beautiful machine that functions flawlessly.

How does your battery hold up under normal usage?
-
I am impressed. With max battery life set in power manager it's exactly 7 hours on integrated graphics and about 5 to 6 on discrete. This is with the 9 cell battery charged to 95% (as recommended elsewhere for battery longevity). I could obviously pull a little more. I often go 2 days between recharging and even then I could use it more. I run XP so having to restart and switch graphics in the BIOS is inconvinent, but not overly so. Something that confuses me is I seem to get the same battery life regardless of whether WiFi is on or off. Not sure what is going on here.
Vista would probably have better batter life as the drivers are supposedly better optimized for that. That's my reading from these forums and elsewhere. I'm happy with XP.
In summation, this is a better laptop than the T61p I wanted so much. -
Wow, I must admit that I wasn't expecting to hear anything close to 7 hours or even 5 or 6 on discrete. That's pretty impressive. If you don't mind me asking, what do you use the machine for mainly? Are you doing any graphic-intensive tasks, or are you just doing the common tasks - word processing, web surfing, etc.?
-
That might have helped to identify...
Pretty basic stuff. Internet, Word, disc burning, and music so far. Yeah I don't push it too hard on battery. -
Ah, it makes more sense now. Still though, that's awesome battery life even if you are just doing basic stuff.
-
So in XP you can't switch the graphics on the fly?
-
correct. .

Dang . . . using XP kind of negates one of the cooler (to me) features.
