    okay, so does this mean..

we can't use discrete graphics while unplugged and vice versa? In other words, is it out of the user's hands whether or not your laptop is set on discrete or integrated.

    Think of it like this

In the ATI menu you can select max battery life or max perf for either battery mode or AC power mode. Depending on the current load (sitting on desktop or gaming) it switches to the best mode for that situation.

Basically you can let it go into high performance mode under battery or AC power.

Better yet, what about Linux? I read in another post that the bios can be set to always use the ATI card. I hope this is true since I'll be formatting mine and using Linux.

Yeah, I have some concerns about this. Maybe some kind of special unified driver for the Intel X4500 and ATI discrete card is used, and that probably complicates things for other platforms, or overclocking, etc.

How about reviews of the w500 and w700? With the news of the w700 I am starting to lean towards that model over the t series, but it would be nice to see reviews of them to compare. Thanks.

I'm sorry but I wish I could believe that. I mean, I think that might be best case scenario, i.e., nothing on, screen nearly dark, idling.
I think that most notebooks with the same components these days should have similar battery life given a similar size battery. What this tells me is that the battery life seems to have gone up, which is always good. If the 9 cell could get 5 hours of usable battery life, I'd be happy. I usually cut the battery figures in half to get it right. Maybe I'm just venting b/c a T61 6 cell gave me 2.5 in what I consider ideal conditions. I want 4 hours off a six cell, 3/4 brightness, wifi. That's what I desire. I had an m1330 with six cell LED screen and that too gave me about 2.75 hours with brightness 2 notches from the top with just wifi. Oddly enough, my macbook pro really gets great battery life around 3.5 hours, which is completely strange to me since I think it must be the operating system that's responsible b/c again it's similar components and a similar-sized battery.

Something is still going slightly nutty since I installed Steam to pull in my games, but here is a screenshot of the battery life so far. figure chop 1 hour off while it gets used over the entire workday, but so far the T400 has given some amazing results.

Sadly no, the T500 has the larger screen, non-LED backlit, and better graphics card. It is more in line with what my T60 was getting in the 5.5-6hr mark.

wait, to clarify, the T500 is getting 5.5-6hr with the 9cell battery? And this is w/ discrete graphics or integrated?

T500 seriously needs some LED bling

This is with discrete graphics and the 9-cell battery. Not really doing as well as the T400 which has the LED backlit screen and lower graphics card.

Yea, I heard that around the place you live the T500's HD3650 performance is comparable to dv5t's 9600M GT.....and that T400's HD3470 is a around 20% better than 9300M GS

Kevin, are you planning test out the gaming capabilities of both laptops?
