Yes, there will be a diff between brightness, but I want to see if it'll noticeably affect the T500 usability.
As for sound and heat, I don't know about you guys, but the T60 I'm using right now is reallllly quiet and realllly cool as compared to my Dell (both from the same year).
haha, i just wanna make sure the T500 lives up to the thinkpad brand

Thank you for the comment about the brightness of T500.
Does the brightness of T500 is "same as" Sony XBriteEco?
For 8 hours daily reading, which one you prefer...T400 or T500 and FW? T400 is more portable and brightness, but the font size may be too small for people doing "8 hours daily" reading. It is because my budget can only buy a notebook as replacement of both desktop and notebook, so the notebook will be used at least 8 hours daily.
Please give some suggestion for it since you have done an excellent job in review so many different notebooks. I do not like glossy display except Sony which is not that glossy comparing to HP, Dell... Does the T400/T500 still non glossy display?
Is it possible you can post the pics of T400 & T500 side by side having the display showing a lot of text in your official review later? Thinkpad is designed mostly for business purpose instead of multimedia purpose, showing the display with a lot of text may give us more information about the quality of the product.
Thank you for your time. -
Thank you for the reply. Seem to me you know coding too.
Beside T500, I am consider FW because it width. It will provide more space for those debugging windows. I keep hearingThinkpad are good notebooks from I.T people. On the other hand, hearing many comment about Sony notebook quality is so-so. I do not like glossy, so do not consider HP and Dell.
For coding, do you think the display of T400 is big enough?
Is there any trick for people to use 14" display to do coding easily? Does those ATI "virtual desktop" usable in Thinkpad? It can make the screen larger by scrolling.
The WSXGA 1680x1050 may reduce the the font of webpage too much. If I buy T400, WSXGA must be picked due to T400 is one inches less than T500. Why Lenovo not make the T500 brightness?
Thank you. -
Does anyone has used the Thinkpad Ultrabay for secondary harddisk? Does the secondary harddisk will perform as fast as the primary harddisk? If it does, then T400/T500 will perform close to desktop with the help of Centrino2...DDR3 1066 FSB.
Could anyone comment on whether "DDR2-800 dual channel" will perform same as "DDR3-1066 single channel"?
Sony FW "motherboard" using dual channel DDR2-800, does it still takes FULL advantage of ALL features of Centrino 2"?
Can T400/T500 use 8GB ram total?
Thank you. -
thankinfo, WXGA+ is very marginal for coding.
Which IDE do you use? Is the laptop your only coding machine? If so, you may want to get at least a 15" WSXGA+ screen. You can also consider getting an external LCD for your debugging windows and web browsers. (Some IDEs, like IntelliJ, allow you to spread windows on multiple monitors)
Do you do web development or desktop development? Neither 1680x1050 nor 1600x900 would allow you to see your IDE and your web browser side by side.
I do not use virtual desktop. That requires clicks. I rather hide/show my debug windows. -
BTW, WSXGA+ is not so bad on a 15 incher. My wife's HP has that resolution and for the longest time I thought that was WXGA+. Most IDEs allow you to increase the font size. The code is what you look at most of the time anyway.

First looks will be going up first, then then indepth full reviews after.
Oh and right now my biggest gripe is Lenovo cheaped out on the new keyboards, using thinner metal. Some flex can now be felt whereas my T60 has almost none. Thankfully the keyboards use the same connectors and you can swap an "older" keyboard in the new notebook -
-
-
They "legendary" ThinkPad keyboard is a big reason I am interested in a ThinkPad. I don't want ANY flex... If it has, then it's probably a dealbreaker...
-
What is keyboard flex?
you mean the actual keys are loose? -
oh and where/when will the review for the t400 be posted
-
-
I'll leave the second question for Kevin. -
-
dealbreaker, period
-
-
this keyboard flex issue is a bit alarming, I sure hope it's only an isolated case with the review unit...
-
hey dudes,
the T500 is going to be my first lenovo laptop. as a matter of fact its going to be my first laptop. do you think i will notice anything wrong with my keyboard?? -
2.5 hrs anyone? cant waiit
-
to tell you the truth im going crazy... no laptop for like a week after school starts. and new to the college...
and is there any answer on the part number question i had 2 pages back?? -
OK I believe that it is a typo and that it is a 3470 instead of 3650, or whatever it says...
but why on earth would Lenovo not have fixed it by now? It just doesn't make sense. -
First look coming at 12:00am tonight?
-
-
Great, we start to get back to decent screen's and now they are going to go cheap on the keyboards? Deal breaker for me compared to the M2400, E6400.

keys > hinge parts > stamped metal frame that pivot parts attach to > another stamped reinforcement plate

keys > hinge parts > stamped metal frame that pivot parts attach to > plastic sticker sheet for water proofing
It is either a cost savings measure, something to cut down on weight, or a wacky redesign of sorts. The new keyboard flexes one heck of a lot more than the old design. With both removed outside of the notebook, the new one flexes VERY easily in your hands, while the old one takes a bit of effort to bend. -

might as well spend the $1600 and get a sweet d5vt

For me the keyboard in itself isn't a deal breaker. Everything about the new notebook is better, and old style keyboards can be found on eBay for like 40 bucks and swapped in under 5 minutes.

Speaking of keyboards....
Could someone take the keyboard off of their T61, and take a picture of the top with the palmrest moved out of the way, and then a picture of the bottom? I want to rule out the possibility that this might have happened for just the new T400/T500, and not something that took place between the T60 to T61 without me noticing. -
Does it still feel the same though? I mean the thinkpad keyboard feel.
-
I wish I could help you out Kevin but I don't have a digital camera.
-
Thanks,

The general consensus is that the t400 has a 3460.
-
This is a ThinkPad T400, model 27652LA. It clearly says 3470HD. If you want to check actual specs for other models, just click [change] beside the model number...
-
Thats a bit of a pity re keyboard. The reason I love my t43 so much is a wonderful keyboard. If the keyboard is just as good as others there really isn't any incentive to stay with Lenovo due to the average screens.
-
I just got my T400 today.
The keyboard still feels the same to me though.
There's a little sound coming out from my adapter when I charge my battery.
I love it though, its great so far! -
-
i only have a 2 megapixel phone camera, if you really want it.
-
-
Nope I never had a ThinkPad before, it feels the same as my friend's T61.
I've only touched the T61 keyboard once though. =/ -
some pictures. -
They had it right the first time and should leave it alone. -
God look at that taskbar lol.
Time to format. -

Kevin, could you write something about viewing angles? Are they better than in x300?
Where are the reviews for the T400/T500/W500 - DEAD - DEAD
