Did you configure the T400 through EPP/CPP? If not, that's still an amazing deal.

Using the CPP for that. Using my colleges student/alumni site the price is about 100 bucks more. You could add 500 to the price and it is still a better deal than other manufacturers.

SO glad that Lenovo isnt going the IBM route with notebooks. I would have never purchased a Thinkpad 4-5 years ago when it was not uncommon to see configurations selling for 3-4k for what we now see going for less than 2,000.

It is true that Thinkpads are now quite a bit cheaper than IBM Thinkpads. This can be accounted to hardware generally getting cheaper, but also (mainly) to the use of non-ISP screens. I would like to see Lenovo offer the IPS screens as an option. :(

Some of us may be willing to pay a $250-$400 premium for those LCDs.

The FlexView option on my T60 added about 75 bucks at the time. I think I bought it for about $1700. Comparable config from the T42/T43 (IBM days) was 2500-2800. In the course of a company being bought out the very next generation of computers were listed for almost 1,000 bucks cheaper. Now they are almost 1000 under that. Dell has a problem doing that as they churn out much worse built notebooks, Lenovo is doing pretty good.

Since Kevin's forthcoming review sounds like it'll be pretty glowing, I'm beginning to pin down a T400 as my first ever laptop. I've gone through four years of school on homebuilt desktops, and I'm getting sick of lugging them around. I have some questions, though.

    1) I've read a little bit about a 3-cell battery that can be plugged into the bay where the optical drive normally rests, but I can't find this option on the lenovo site. Does this actually exist? If so, where can I buy the battery, and is the optical drive hot-swappable? Since it's SATA, I'd assume so, but I don't know how the computer would react to suddenly having another battery.

    2) The lenovo site currently lists the weight of the T400 at 6.2 pounds or something, I assume that's a typo. The actual starting weight is 4.7 pounds, correct? Are there any options I should know about that would significantly add to this? Hard drives, etc? Is there info available about what that 3-cell battery weighs, if it exists?

    3) What -exactly- does an accidental damage warranty ensure against that the normal warranty doesn't? Historically I've been able to get things repaired under 'normal wear and tear' warrantees that were anything but normal. I'm pretty darn careful with my electronics, but I've never owned a laptop. I'm leaning towards just getting a standard depot warranty.

I have other questions about the keyboard and chassis flex but I'm sure they'll be answered in the review. =)

    1. The T400 can get upwards of 10 hours of battery life under normal use with the 9 cell battery. You really dont need the extra 3 cell ;)

    2. Weight with 9 cell is 2.7kg or about 5.9lbs.

From the tabook, if you wanted this, it’s the “Advanced Ultrabay Battery II 3-cell” (43R9250).

I think a lot of people are interested in the 4 cell + 3 cell because they don't want that massive battery sticking out the back.

Yea, I never had an idea of getting a Thinkpad too....they were so expensive during those days....not to mention the graphic cards they had....nowadays we are getting ALMOST (the keyboard) the same stuff for like GRANDS less

    You could:

    Drop it
Trip over the power cord and have it crash to the floor
Spill something on it (the spillproof keyboard isn't meant to take a bath)
    Step on it
Run over it with a car
Have a dog step on the keyboard and break the keys

    and it would be covered.

Yeah, that's what I'm leaning towards right now. Does anyone know where I could find more information about that battery? I don't know where to look up that model name that was given.
Any idea what the baseline lowest weight is?

I'm glad to hear their warranty is so comprehensive.

I thought i was posting yesterday but i couldnt find my post...

I got my T400 on Tuesday:

I really love the Keyboard as far as typing goes. I didnt have a Lenovo before but one of my Girlfriends did have an IBM and i actually did not like the keyboard as far as typing goes (was 3-4 years ago I think R series). However the Keyboard gives in when you press hard on it (not by normal typing).

The Laptop also gives in where the Card Reader is and the DVD Player. For such an expensive Laptop i see no reason for this, but than this may not influence the durability of the Laptop (I dont know). I wish the Touchpad would be bigger but I am getting used to it.

From my old laptop i am used to have the Pg up and down buttons right where the navigation cursors are, which i would have liked here too, however this is probably not possible due to the size

The Thinklight shines on the Keyboard but seems from my viewpoint rather useless though...The screen shines brighter than the light!

    Everything else works fine

With the 4 cell battery it is very light but only lasts 2h. I will get a 9cell battery. The sticking out battery makes the small Laptop an inch bigger thats not really a deal for me.

Compared to the gilrfriends Thinpads Display and what I saw around in stores of other Laptop companies, I consider the screen lid as pretty strong and definitely good enough.

I also really like to use the fingerprint reader, it even alows me to substitute my IE Passwords with it.

I am not an expert but if i can help with anything please let me know.

Its so wired I was sure that i was posting this already yesterday!

Thanks again for all of your help!
