The SSD is my boot and programs drive. The old drive is reformatted and acting as a users/backup/storage drive. Did drop my idle watt usage down 1-1.5 watts. Really quite happy with the upgrade, wish I would've done it sooner. Frankly I thought the computer was pretty fast before.... as Charlie Murphy would say, "Wrong".

I left windows on my hard drive. I used EasyBCD to add it to the boot menu on the SSD. This way I can boot into either OS. There's not usually much reason for people to do this, but sometimes it's handy to have another OS installed should something go wrong with the one on the SSD (like an update causing a crash). In my case the HD is a 500gb so it's not like I'm hurting for disc space on it.

Definitely agree with that. Even if the SSD fails completely, nice to have everything on another OS to switch over to.

Anyone in Canada need one? Long story short I ended up ordering two because the first order took so long that i canceled it and bought another one but the first order still ended up at my place! Pretty pissed off since If i return it i have to take a restocking penalty and pay for the shipping costs, so i'm hoping there is someone else up here who may be interested. It is completely brand new and unopened... Will also include receipt if desired...PM me and we can talk!

So, I received my 310 and installed it. It is faster than the 7200 and everything seems to be set up identical (latest bios, booted from the recovery discs, etc.). Except, now the computer runs a lot warmer and the fan runs more often trying to cool the system down. It is warm enough that I can no longer use the computer comfortably while it is sitting on my lap for any amount of time. Kind of a bummer, but I guess I am paying for higher performance.

Oops sorry, i5 x220. The HD is still present and is being used as file storage for a large mp3 collection. I kinda wished I kept Windows 7 on the old drive in case of a crash or what not, but oh well.

It should NOT get warmer, a SSd have no moving parts and use less power (less heat) than a normal platter drive, so the issue must be elsewhere.

I'm figuring the computer has to power the already existing HD plus the SSD so it is actually using more power than it did before. But, the fan coming on more often as well as the discomfort on my lap is telling me warmer.

Turn your idle timer on power manager to spin down the HD. I set mine to 30 seconds.

    My x220 i5 with 310/7200 combo runs cooler/longer/quieter.

yea it has to power hdd and ssd but because the hdd can stay idle longer and draw .5 watts vs. 2.5 watts when in use, you do save energy since an ssd draws only ~.175 watts when in use in the case of the intel drives

Do you have it 30 seconds for both battery and plugged in?

Word. I had it set to never on power, but switched it recently. Do notice a difference of course, but it doesn't bother me much. It would really depend on my usage though, if I had to access the HD often I'd definitely change it.

A question for you guys. Have you enabled DIPM? I really don't know what it is frankly but intel toolbox says it should be on for better power management? I thought I read it does sacrifice a little performance though... maybe not worth it.
