-40GB isn't a lot of breathing room for programs, 80GB has 4~5 times usable space for programs w/ typical W7 install
-somewhat slower
-80GB drive is the same $/GB
The 310 is the proven G2 series crammed on a minicard: same 34nm flash, same controller. I'm sure many would go msata with even larger intel options so G3/25nm should show up eventually as 160+
Saw some roadmaps posted around but those are always up for change.

Meanwhile newegg is still out stock on it. -
I agree w/ all the reasons mentioned above.
Additionally, I'm not so desperate for an SSD that I need one now. I'm content to wait for the 80gb (or something even larger) to become available. -
Mine is going in a new setup. Better to get it right from the start than deal with rearranging things later. Drive letters and software installs are a pain in the to fix after the fact.
-
-
The 40GB isn't bad for me at all, but I guess that depends on the user. I have all my CAD programs on my larger HDD, while putting my most frequently used programs (~90% of everything else) on the SSD. Still have 12GB free after all that.
-
I've had reasonable success using a 40gb for machines acting either as servers or with a limited number of applications. Once you start getting into a lot of different programs or multiple users it starts to get a bit tight. Yeah, there are lots of ways to move or configure apps to avoid using the SSD, but then you've eliminated the primary advantage of the SSD! Going to a 60gb or greater drive seems to avoid most of the hassles (assuming you've got some other larger spindle for holding lots of other data).
Thus I'm going with an 80gb mSATA and a 500gb 7200 seagate. -
Provantage just got in some stock. 28 left as of this posting at a price that's lower than I've seen elsewhere.

Getting a little weary of ordering this thing, but third time is the charm, right?
EDIT: OK this is where the potential enters for things to get dicey:
"Tracking number:
Awaiting tracking number. We are now waiting for our distribution partner to supply us with a tracking number." -
On a related note, my drive isn't being recognized by my x220, even though it's an i5 not an i7. I'm going to try to get it swapped out with Provantage but god knows how long that'll take... -
One assumes they'll ramp up production in response to obvious demand.
-
i got mine from amazon this morning,(ANTOnline) $188- not as cheap as some places but i dont have a choice. provantage wasnt very friendly to my UK credit card. it only accepts amex and jcb for international orders. ebay was a no-go as well. a friend from the us is visiting me so he's bringing the goods over.
I'm going to be seriously annoyed if they lied about stock -
On my latest front, Provantage has updated my status wth a tracking number. I've been this far before with Price Pros, so still trying not to get my hopes up too high yet.
EDIT: OK something was picked up by Fedex and is on its way to me. I will now be cautiously optimistic.. -
I got mine from newegg. I was stalking their site for a few days waiting for more of these to come in stock. It came in the mail last week. The first thing I did when I got my W520 yesterday was to install it right away and then install a fresh copy of Windows 7. Followed by all the drivers and SW.
The difference between the boot & load times are night and day when comparing to the 7200rpm SATA drive. It was worth every penny. I hope Newegg gets more in stock for you guys. -
anyone know a place that is international buyer/card friendly? i dont need it delivered internationally, my friend who lives in the us will be visiting me next month. i hope my amazon order does not get cancelled..
-
^^^ Get the friend to order it for you (according to your specs), pay for it, take delivery of it, then bring it to you later. You can then give the money back to your friend in whatever friendly arrangement you two agree to.
-
at the moment the amazon delivery estimate is 17th-21st june. and its saying:
This portion of your order is being prepared for shipment and cannot be canceled or changed. -
this is the message i just got from antonline
I'm so sorry, this item sold out before we received your order from the Seller Marketplace and is currently back ordered. This can happen because the Seller Marketplace holds orders for up to two hours before sending to us.
We will keep trying to fill and it may ship before you get back to us, but in case we can't would you like to keep the order open pending the arrival of new stock or cancel?
did you get the same message paddy? -
Newegg has 8 in stock as of this message: Intel 310 Series 80GB mSATA mSATA (mini PCIe form factor) MLC
-

however there is no tracking number, should i be worried? -
Give it a little time before you get worried about it.
-
i dont understand why these sellers are being so shady and lying about having stock. Are they hoping people will order and wait for them to get it back in stock??
i mean it seems like a good way to tick off a lot of customers -
-
Wow, two days in a row. In stock at the moment at Newegg, it is 20:34 Central Time,
-
they finally gave me a shipping tracking number. now i just hope i dont get a lemon or the wrong thing lol...
yes, i looked at newegg, it said yesterday more stock would be arriving today. and they're also giving that nice intel gift...which consists of a screwdriver with interchangable tips, and a mini maglite. sadly i couldnt order from newegg with my foreign credit card so i'll have to do without the freebie -
For any other non-USA customers, I had a good experience buying mine from shopblt.com, shipped to Australia and purchased with Australian credit card.
-
I got it! This thing is tiny. Ordered from Provantage on Tuesday, and have it today (Friday). Paid about 181.00 total, delivered.
Installed and recognized. Blue screened the first boot but seems OK now. -
My 310 will be here Monday, according to Fedex.
Like a lot of other vendors lately, ssdestore was not accurate about the items actually being in-stock. I would not encourage others to buy from them. From the way the process was handled it seems like it's a one-man show anyway. -
Did you ever get a tracking number from Provantage? It shows as being received in Ohio but no number is up to track from Ohio to San Diego.
Very glad it works btw. -
-
I got mine yesterday from provantage. Cloned my original partition to the SSD using Paragon OS to SSD, so no need to reinstall everything and it even shrunk the partition to the appropriate size. Works perfectly!

The Series 310 disappeared from newegg.com entirely. I wonder what that means.

Snagged one from Newegg just now.
I had a wwan card on mine from the get go, so I'm kinda feeling like it won't work initially. Hopefully I'll be surprised, but chances are I'll be waiting for that bios update.
Wonder if anyone who has had the WWAN card from the factory has been successful? -
-
I ogt high hopes the Bios fix will work.
I suppose it always could go in the W520 but that already has 2 SSDs. -
21 in stock at Newegg as of this posting
-
NewEgg Business has 20+ in stock as of post. $199 - 15% off promo code B2BSSD15
-
Hurray, got the Newegg business one and now it's time to read up on how to transfer Windows over!

However I have a small glimmer of hope. I saw one lenovo employee say some wwan enabled worked with msata... some didn't. Luck of the draw it seems. Those not wwan enabled all worked.
Keep it either way and wait I guess. Let's just hope it is early July and not late. -
is the intel 310 series new?
Do you know if a newer msata ssd series is planned to get out with maybe higher capacity? -
Here is the leaked roadmap:
Intel SSD 720, 710 and 520 Series leak out, Larsen Creek and Paint Creek bring up rear guard -- Engadget
Edit: Looks like Intel 311 SSD (Larsen Creek) has already been released/ -

Just as an update to anyone who cares. I got the Intel 310 up and running on a WWAN enabled x220. No problems at all actually. Took the original hdd out and the wwan card, popped the 310 in and rebooted. Recognized it, formatted it before installed Win 7. Wanted to make sure I didn't get the 100mb additional partition and made sure it would align correctly. Working fine next to my HDD now and is correctly aligned. So I guess it is totally random if you have problems or not. I did (before installing the physical drive) update to the latest intel chipset (on intel's website). I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not, but figured I'd add that.
