Ok so after looking at replacing my HD screen on my T430s with a HD+ one, it seems you need to replace the LCD cable with HD+ cable. Someone here mentioned that if your replacing the LCD cable there is quite a bit more that needs to be disassembled before replacing the LCD cable. After looking at Lenovo manual here is what needs to be disassembled before getting to replacing the LCD cable: Removing the LCD Cable - ThinkPad T430s, T430si

It seems pretty involved and frankly I'm not sure I want to go through all that to improve my display from 1366x768 to 1600x900.

For what I know you're correct. To replace the HD screen with the standard T430/T430s HD+ screen you have to replace the LCD cable, but no extension cable would be necessary. You would end up with something that work for sure (the problem I encountered concern the extension cable), but in may opinion such improvement wouldn't worth the work and the cost.

I ordered the LCD HD+cable. I just need the FRU# For the HD+ screen for the T430s(NOT the X1C HD+ screen). It looks like Samsung, LG, and AUO make the panels. Not sure which one?

For those who tried this mod, considering you have to replace the LCD cable as well. Do you really have to remove ALL those parts listed above in order to replace the LCD cable? Seems like a lot of work.

I've replaced the LCD cable on my T430. I could leave some minor parts in their place (the integrated camera and other small parts that I don't remember), it will be clear as soon you proceed with the job. Nevertheless the keyboard, the keyboard bezel, etc have to be removed and require major work.
You can find a complete FRU list here: http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/T430s_FRU_BOM.pdf
Anyway, ordering the LCD from a third part (like laptopscreen.com) should be far cheaper than ordering from Lenovo.
Accordingly to comments around the web, AUO LCDs seem to be even worst than the others, therefore you should probably avoid them.

Appreciate the input. I looked through the LCD FRU #'s. Think I'll get the LG one.

Hi guys. I have one T440s laptop on my table. We all know about excelent quality of this IPS panel. What do you think about using this display to T4xx . I think that the connector on the mainboard is different.. But what about connector on the display?

    Hi!

    Thanks for the pictures.
I have a T420s with X1 carbon LCD, I will check the pictures what I made during the conversation.
I will do this on this weekend. As far as I know T430s and T420s LCD-s are the same (with same connector position).
    Regards

Hello everybody, two months ago I've managed to replace my screen with X1 Carbon LCD panel, using a cable extension that is working perfectly (my previous attempt failed due to the cable extension). I've just written an exhaustive article about the subject on thinkwiki.org: Replacing T430 screen with a better one - ThinkWiki
In the article I've also summarized the main information contained at this thread. The article itself is written in order to be improved with future discoveries on the subject: anyone who wants to contribute is very welcome!

no i haven't purchased a display yet because i don't know the quality of aftermarket displays, i sold my t430 to a family member, if i run across some reviews on a good aftermarket display, i may try it out, as of right now i think the carbon is the best bet, i was told someone has tried it though with success.

FYI, I found a LED converter cable, which fits the specs detailed in section " A simple solution that should work":
Replacing T430 screen with a better one

The item can be found here (UK):
    LED Screen Converter cable

The cable should arrive within the week, so I will let people know if the vertical segment near the male connector is indeed longer than standard.

Unfortunately the cable that I received didn;t have a long enough male connector segment.
I fitted it on the X1 screen, but I do not expect it to last long...

I have ordered a new one from here:
    PATAR-LED173CONV
Hoping this one is the correct one.

hi guys, at the risk of not being taken seriously as a newbie here, posting this on April Fools day, I still hope someone has some good advice for me.

I got a T420 a few months back and strongly disliked the AUO B140RW02 (V.1) fitted, the horrible viewing angels and a horrid AG-coating was too much for me.

so I found the article for the T430 screen upgrade and immediately ordered myself a LP140WD2(TL)(E2) and some cable extenders hoping it would be a relatively easy task.

yesterday the screen finally arrived and I went to business straight away.
my first attempt to just hook the new panel without the extension cable proved unsuccessful, the image works as it should but I got no backlight.

then I switched back to the original AOU and guess what. the backlight doesn't start with this installed either.

so does this mean my motherboard is bust?
I can tell the system boots as it should but I cannot for the life of me get the darn backlight LEDs to light up on either of the panels.

worked fine before I first connected the X1c screen.

    now what?

So, you put it back to the original state and it doesn't work? If so, I'd try hooking to an external monitor to see if it works. That should tell if it's the screen parts or something else. Then you can go from there.

yes, neither of the screens work now, both refuse to light the backlight.

the system boots and runs as it should otherwise as shining a touch at the back of the displays reveals the Windows desktop at native rez and all.

found a link saying it might be the BL fuse that's gone bad, will check that out as soon as I get home.

I bricked a t430s motherboard attempting this upgrade, mine would start up once out of 20 times after it happened. I was kind of sloppy when it came to grounding myself and having the battery/power plugged in while i was disconnecting and reconnecting lcd panel and extension cable. Removing cmos battery and doing some other diagnostics didn't help.

That being said, I would not be surprised that some kind of fuse blew in yours, though i didn't know one existed, or that the mobo was fried to some extent during the install, causing some kind of finicky problem.

I can confirm after some quick measurements that neither of the two fuses guarding the display are dead.

The motherboard as an entity seems ok.What gets me is how (it would seem) I have killed the backlight driver'without'killing the fuse dedicated to protect it.

also, I did try to unplug the Webcam chip which I found houses the lid-close switch, sadly also to no good.

The story has now ended, and I have my beautiful glare super-black x1 display mounted on my T420 working flawlessly.

What I did the first time turns out to have short-circuited major parts of the motherboard as I accidentally (confirmed) connected the extension cable at the male end with the data connections towards the front of the screen instead of backwards like it's suppsed to be.
This then fried either the original display cable, motherboard or both.
Luckily I managed to send it to lenovo and they fixed it by swapping motherboard, display cable and the display itself.... :S

    However.

Now the question is 'where can I find the right extension cable?'.

So far I have bought about half a dussin and only got one of the right model. This-here-cable is still the only one that actually matches the recommended specs for the 'ideal' solution in the original guide so i strongly recommend ordering from that seller if you need the extension.

(stay away from notebookaid and screenaid on ebay, their extenders don't match their photos!)

Hope somebody will find this helpful, and thanks in return for all your help guys.

Note though that it took quite some time to calibrate the new screen before it even half as nice as it is now........ ;)

will the x1 carbon screen fit? I'd like a FHD or higher resolution on a 14.1 thinkpad that can take 16gb of ram.

You are absolutely right, the viewing angles are terrible.

Now I want to buy LP140WD2-TLE2, on eBay from this seller LG Philips LP140WD2 TLE2 14" Laptop Screen | eBay but he says that there LP140WD2-TLE1 and that it is one and the same screen.
Is this true ? it is worth to make a purchase ?

    Hi,

thanks for all information about replacing the screen panel.

I have bought a new T430s and I am frustrated about the quality of the panel. Especially the white color representation is extremly bad. So I found this topic and also the replacing guide on thinkwiki ( Replacing T430 screen with a better one - ThinkWiki)

Somebody of you have allready replaced the panel sucessfully. How is the LP140WD2(TL)(E2) fixed in the T430s? The original one is screwed. The LP140WD2(TL)(E2) not?

Is there somebody out of germany who allredy ordered the components here:

    LP140WD2 (TL)(B2), 14,0", LED, MATT!, 79,90 €, screen-shop.
17,3" LED Anschluss Verlängerungskabel / connector extensio

    Thank you for help.

    Best regards

About screen LP140WD2-TLG1 wrote that it was good enough, but still it falls short in quality to the screen LP140WD2-TLE2 . In fact, the display LP140WD2-TLG1 is one of the best, which is mounting and the correct connector.
If you believe the site http://www.panelook.com then another screen that has the mounting and the correct connector is B140RTN02.1 You can compare the parameters of these 2 screens AUO B140RTN02.1 Overview - Panelook.com and http://www.panelook.com/LP140WD2-TLG1_LG Display_14.0_LCM_overview_17530.html

    sonny.net,
    Hello!
Unfortunately on the screen LP140WD2-TLE2 no fixation, so the fixation will have to do yourself. Alternatively, you can make a mounting of a thin tin (the shell of the battery), the form of attachment shown in the picture:
    ?????????tle2.jpg
After installing the screen in the desired position, glue these tabs to the screen epoxy glue.

For example, I made a lock screen from ordinary batteries. The latch turned out great, it should be made smaller.(Still need to drill two holes in the retainer):

This here post should give you the answers you seek.

As long as you are careful when bending it so you don't get multiple bends at one point, also make sure to use a piece of tape both holding the bend bent as well asholding the extension cable in the place. Doing this, it should last about as long as the screen assuming the screen don't wiggle around when you're transporting the machine.

    Hi,

first of all, many thanks for the wiki page you wrote about the lcd replacement!

I want to ask you how did you manged to get rid of the two plastic layers on the cable extension. Mine is rock solid, and it seems to me that mechanical way of removing doesn't work well, as the wires can be damaged. According the picture from your wiki it seems that you were more successful with this. Can you post your advices, even to the wiki page or as reply here. Thanks.

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful information so far.
After doing the same research as everyone here and arriving at the only current conclusion - the X1 carbon LCD to upgrade the T430, I attempted to install the screen tonight using the 17.3" LVDS extender cable mentioned in the ThinkWiki article and punctured the cable attempting to remove the hard plastic shielding the connectors of the 17.3" LVDS adapter. I just ordered two more (I wish I had originally ordered two). I was hoping someone could recommend a few ideas on removing the plastic pieces, as well as perhaps a few additional pictures of the end result -- after working with the cable I'm afraid to bend it completely flat which is what would be required to install the screen once the cable is properly routed. Thanks in advance, and good luck to anyone else trying this mod.

Hello, I just did the modification.

I found it was quite easy to remove the plastic part, the process took less than 10mn.

With the nail scratch gently the corner until you can pinch it.
While still pinching the corner force the tip of the finger (the one which is on the cable side) between the cable and the plastic.
The movement is the as if you were trying to pinch the plastic with the nails while still holding the plastic corner between the soft of the fingers .
It gives more precision than simply pulling on the plastic and you will not risk to tear the cable.
Progressively you will be able to unglue the plastic layer, stop around 2mm before the contacts (1,
    .5mm is better perhaps).
    Code:

                           |||||||||
    _______________________|-------| <--- stop here
                     | |
                     | |
    _________________|_____________|
                     ^
                     |
                      ------ start here

It took me more time to find a way cut the plastic properly as I realized I had not a thin pair of scissors.
    (So I used a cutter)

I just did the mod last week, it is great.

There is one thing you must pay attention to:

ALWAYS REMOVE THE BATTERY before plugging or unplugging any elements to the motherboard
    I got a black screen...

    Here is the story:
The day I got all the parcels I plugged the screen and did a test to validate all the element.
After that I removed the plastic layer on the cable extension and did another test to validate that the cable did not suffer during the process.
What I I didn't noticed is that I had let the battery still docked.
The test was a failure, the screen was black.
At broad light I noticed that the lcd was working because I managed to read the "Thinkpad" banner at the boot, in black letters over a black background, I conclude only the back light was not working.
I searched on the internet and discovered that a fuse may have blown on the motherboard.
That fuses are marked with a letter "F" and a number. They are located near the HD connector on the motherboard on both side of the board.
I took of the motherboard and I tested all the fuse (using an ohmmeter).
The one that was burnt was the smallest, located on the back of the motherboard named "F7"
It was really very small, smaller than the point of my solder iron.
It was not easy to shortcut the fuse, regarding its size, but I managed to do it
(caress the fuse with a drop of stain from one end to the other)

Now everything is working; except that I always think to that missing fuse.

The computer has a lithium battery and a magnesium body.
    I there a risk of fire ?
    Should I buy a new motherboard ?
