    Hello all,

I'm hoping I can get some input with my problem. I have been trying to make this upgrade work for some time now, unsuccessfully. Here is the story. After realizing that practically ANY screen you buy on the internet that is supposed to be the X1 screen, is really a "compatible" screen - which means, it is not necessarily going to be the LG that came with the X1 (it would be market availability, which means any one of 4 diff manufacturers). So, I found one with a matching part # on ebay that came from a used Carbon. I then ordered the HD+ cable, and the extension with the plastic male end (not soldered). The first time I tried to hook this up, I made the idiotic move of leaving the battery in, and hooked it up backwards. Bam, blew my first fuse. I also wrecked the ext cable trying to get the plastic off, so ordered a new one. I have several motherboards for the 420, so with a new MB, this time making sure it was hooked up right, with NO power to the laptop, turned it on and bam, STILL blew the fuse. I tried a third time, calculating each step to make sure I wasn't screwing up, and it happened to the third board!! WTH am I doing wrong? When the HD+ cable was hooked directly to the screen it worked beautifully. I had it hooked up that way, and working, before each try that blew the fuse. It HAS to be that ext cable, right??

Here's more info. I've tried to fix the F7 fuse with the solder technique, and it doesn't work. Only if I jump across the one end of the F7 fuse to the opposite end of the fuse right next to it, will the screen light. ANY IDEAS??? I NEED HELP!!

Yes, the 430 is very close to the 420, and if it already had the 1600 x 900 screen in it, it would have the HD+ cable already. But read my post above about the screens on ebay, etc., and look at the list of possible manufacturers. It is going to be a "compatible" screen.

Well after a long, and arduous journey, I finally completed this upgrade. My problem was the extension cable that I was using, as it turns out. I found a replacement that works, and works perfectly. It even is VERY easy to remove the hard plastic on this one. I'm thrilled with the way it came out. It is a huge improvement over that 1024 x 768 stock junker. If anyone needs help with this, I'd be happy to share what I know. Here it is, finished:

Hi, I'm maintaining the wikipage that details the replacement at the ThinkWiki.

    http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Replacing_T430_screen_with_a_better_one#Placing_the_new_screen

Could you give us a link to which extender cable you purchased?

Could you also explain how you removed the hard plastic on the extender cables? This way, others can replicate your methods.

I attempted this once and like an idiot I left the battery in and was otherwise careless about shorting things out. So guess what, I shorted out the mobo. Thankfully i was/am still under warranty and got a new mobo installed for free within 2 days. Now I am wanting to attempt this again because the oem screen is just godawful. During my first attempt I noticed that even with the extension it was a little short and hard to maneuver. This may be a dumb question, but can I use two extension cables daisy chained to make the install a little easier? Thanks!

Hi everyone! :) I have no idea when this whole conversation was because there's no date or I don't know where it is because this is my first time in this forum. I read everything and I see most of you got your X1 display now, connected with the HD+ cable. Actually, I'm writing becuase for me, it seems too much effort to upgrade to HD+ ; I don't want to waste that much money for something this risky, and I want to do the procedure fast and painless. So, what happened to my T430 display was, that all of a sudden a white line appeared on the screen that wouldn't go away (and is in front of my eyes right now). After searching a lot, I gave up and concluded my LCD is broken and I need to replace it. I wanted to replace it with an original T430 display, but then had the idea to change the display, since it isn't that good. THE ONLY THING on the whole Internet that seemed to work for someone was this: http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/Dell/ALIENWARE~M14X~R2/ and now I'm thinking of buying it. Does anyone have any experience? Do I need any extra cable or is the screen ready- to- use?
Thanks for all your replies in advance :)

Edit: In the link, I am referring to the 1366x768 models

For anyone interested, herewith enclosed you can find an ICC profile for the X1 screen. It allows to correct its strong blue hue. It has been created by an hardware calibrator.

Is there a 1080p screen or higher resolution for this mod?

No, but there's a different mod:

    http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=118070

The kits in question enable the use of FHD IPS panels found in T440s/450s in the *20/30 generation. There are some caveats regarding the standard systems, though. Read the thread in its entirety and decide for yourself.

stumbled onto this forum after researching upgrading the display on the T430....recently picked one up and as most of you know, great little machine but the stock display is terrible.

Techguy68 - can you share what LCD extension cable you used?

I want to attempt the LCD swap to the X1 Carbon screen but really scared of frying my mobo in the process....I don't want to be hooking up the cable in the wrong manner...any info is greatly appreciated!

I have a spare t430 that doesn't get used. Can I put a 2560 x high resolution screen from the x1 carbon to my t430? Then I can put in a quad core in the t430 and be pretty happy.

    Ok
I'm planning to buy the X1 Carbon screen. There are some LP140WD2(TL)(E2) = LP140WD2 TL E2 on ebay with price in range 120-250$, but there are also LP140WD2 TL E1 or TL D3 or TL C1 etc
From what I've read in this pdf
    http://www.datasheetspdf.com/PDF/LP140WD2-TLD2/908643/1
    [IMG]
The last 2 letters/digits are just a revision code - so it should not be so important.
Can anyone confirm that I'm right? Or hunting for TL E2 aimint for E2 revision would be important...

I know this thread is old, but I thought some still might find it useful:
I have been searching quite a lot before ending on this solution, which was really easy an the result stunning:
I have a T430s 1600*900 and wanted a better/brighter screen. The X1 seemed as the only solution, until I found that the panel from the Dell Alienware M14x apparently would fit without any mods.
I ordered the screen from a webshop and installed it today. The screen has the same connector and the same screw/attachment positions, and it was just as if I replaced it with an original screen. It took 5 minutes and now my T430s is like new with a screen where you can actually see it outside, better viewing angels and much better and brighter colours.
Maybe the X1 panel is a little better, i couldn't tell, but this solution without any mods was the absolute best one for me.

Hi, thank you for posting this useful information.
Which model of display did you choose? It seems that some models of alienware m14x had exactly the same screen of t420/t430, in fact you can find reviews of this laptop referring the screen as awful.

Yes. Please specify the exact LCD Panel Model / Part Number you got and where from and for how much? $$ Please share a little bit of details so others may gather usable information from this.

The new screen is absolutely better! It's not an IPS panel for sure, but it's MUCH brighter than the old one (which was my biggest complaint about the original screen. Using it outside was not even an option). The colours might be a little "greyish" and black is not super black, but I also chose the matte display as I'm using the computer several hours each day for work and only once in a while for a movie/gaming. In other words: the bright version will probably offer deeper/richer colours.

I bought this display from laptopscreens.com:
    https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/Dell/ALIENWARE%20M14X%20R2/
    "LCD Screen 14.0-inch WideScreen (12"x7.4")
    WXGA++ (1600x900) HD+
Matte LED compatible with Dell ALIENWARE M14X R2 / 3 Years warranty.
    Price: $50.23 (without shipping)"

Hope this is enough information. Feel free to ask for more details

I think it would be somewhat useful to get a photo of the manufacturing label on the screen itself.
    AOU? Samsung? LG? OEM P/N??

i bougth the display at latopscreen.com, item ID 110004, its an Innolux N140FGE-LA2 Rev. C2.
previously, it was a Samsung LTN140KT03.
the innolux had better viewing angles and i think the color are better.
