But another person from T400 told me the same problem. There has been many T400 threads about having similar problem after clean install or factory install.
I absolutely have no problem when running recovery from DVDs. It's just when running from hard drive.
I need to figure this out before tomorrow though because I need to know whether I have to take back my mother's laptop or not.

Wouldn't my Vista Ultimate key work if it should ask for CD key?
Edit: Does installation supposed to go through if it's really a Vista Ultimate?
You know when you right click 'Computer', there's a section to activate a product key on the bottom right? If I enter my Ultimate key, would it work?
I've been looking up eBay for Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD, but I'm not sure if those come with SP1. -
Official. Once the recovery was complete, it took me back to where it was.
I'm through with it, I think. -
Yes but Lenovo is an OEM, so your retail key for Vista Ultimate might not work (if it even asks you...which it might not being factory recovery). I am just saying if it DID ask you, you might not having it working (but you of course own a legit key and could ask MS to authenticate for you). But sounds like you have it working now.
-
No, it's not working. When the recovery process was done, it took me back to where I was before with all those 'Device not found', and 'No valid operating system.'
I'm not even sure how to face my parents anymore, especially my mother.
I'm going to try with my self-burnt disc this time, but if it doesn't work, I think I'll have to return it. -
Oh...well if you screwed up the boot partition and tried to use recovery media...i could see that maybe not working if it NEEDS to piggy back the recovery partition. But do you HAVE any retail OS...legit or otherwise because you just need to try it. Also burn a linux live boot if you need to use it for a few days while trying to troubleshoot this. Sounds like the recovery media doesnt let you whip the partitions out and make a new boot sector. But anyways find a friend to burn you a retail copy of xp or vista...totally redo it (since you dont have it working right now) and see if it is bootable (and then go from there) or try out a linux live boot for a few days so you can cool off and just have a computer to use (or heck install linux, you can always nuke it).
-
I waited one month to look for laptop, I waited another one month for this laptop to ship to my home, I basically sat that laptop around for one week without much use, and now I must go back and forth trying to figure out what's wrong..
I'm not sure about that.
I don't have any friend that's good at computers, mainly because they're all biology major.
My classes end at 2:45 pm from M-Thurs, so I have to wait till Friday if I were to take them to the computer technician. It looks like September is going to be over soon by then.
Little update:
I don't know. After it came back to the Cannot find any device screen, I tried loading my self-burned startup disk and this time it asked me to press F11 to go through Rescue and Recovery.
I don't think it went through R&R because I didn't see usual R&R startup screen, but it loaded all kinds of files from cmd.exe.. It's taking a little while and I'm guessing it's updating drivers and applications since I see SWWORK and driver folder updating by Windows.
But I've seen Windows Vista Ultimate screen popup every once in awhile when it reboots.
Hopefully, it works this time, because I'll be going back to my dorm in about 10 hours and I have to know whether I have to take my mother's laptop or not.
I'm not even sure how to do these steps because I'm not even really sure what I did to get to that step anymore.
Update 2
Looks like Ultimate is on for sure, but it says some drivers aren't installed so it reboot automatically..
Update 3
It rebooted again to install some more files from SWWORK. I hope there aren't any errors. I don't know exactly what was the problem with popup errors, but it seems to have missing some drivers or something. I hope it's because the installation is not over yet. -
Boot partition is still there. I recovered them back and it asked me which files I want to keep, so I said I want to keep Q: and S: drives.
X200 himself messed it up when it finished appropriate processing and reboot.
Update 4
Once the installation was finished, it looks like everything is back and no pop-up error with Vista Ultimate.
I'm not sure but rebooting time varies by so much everytime. Sometimes it's really fast, sometimes it's really slow. Shut down time is roughly about the same though.
Installing some Windows Updates automatically..
Update 5
I'm not sure if this is right.. but it seems like it's installing same thing.
It reboot three times showing same
'Windows is now setting up the following items:
C:\SWWORKS\DOWORK.CMD
C:\SWWORKS\FINISH.CMD
And there is another pop-up
Preload System Setup
'Please wait, preload Customizations in progres......'
I saw the exact same thing for 3 times when it rebooted so far. -
Now it seems like it's doing from step 1 again.. where cmd.exe screen came out.... oh my gosh. I hope not. I think the progressing screen is different from step 1, but idk. It's scanning files.
It says cmd.exe - call.
And it's scanning a lot of files.. -
So wait did it ever boot into windows vista...? You said it completed the installation. And the recovery partition is there but it just doesn't function correctly to recover? I would burn off a linux CD if you can't get it working tonight so you don't have to use your mom's laptop (try ubunutu).
-
Now, I'm at a point where I have to select languages, enter name. I'll keep you updated.
-
I'm now running all the 'first-time' thing when I factory install.. like register for an account, connect to online.. etc
--
From my experience and another person using T400 who had same problem was that:
There seems to be a bug when I factory recover using hard drive recovery partition.
I'm not even sure what happened because all I did was follow the R&R help.
It just automatically killed everything once it was done with the set up and reboot. -
UPDATE:
As far as I'm concerned, it looks like it's running Vista Ultimate SP1 with OEM product key activated (I didn't enter my Ultimate key).
From what I seen so far, it looks like everything is back, including the partitions, but recovery partition is now 15GB free of 19.5GB. Could that be because of Vista Ultimate? I don't know what happened there. When I checked inside Q:, it looks like it's not same as before.. like the folders and stuff. -
Awesome; glad to hear it. Now that you are back to an okay state just reflect a bit on what happened. It was troublesome and it pissed you off at times but you were able to work out the problem and learn some stuff
. It will help you out in the future as I said earlier. Just don't touch anything significant with the OS for a while
. Good luck in school (I don't start until the end of Sept...going into my 3rd year at UCSB).
Also i started a dedicated thread for the x200 discussion...could you input some comments/critiques? -
Do you know what might've happened to the Q:? It's 15GB of 19.5GB. So my C: have gotten smaller. Only 25.1GB free.
Aren't you going to sleep? It's 12:20AM here.. so there must be like 3:20 right? -
And I'm not sure, but it's using OEM key to run Vista Ultimate.. it's actually activated too. I think I'm just going to uninstall programs via Control Panel and run registry cleaner. I've had enough with clean installation
-
I'm definitely getting onsite warranty. If this type of problem occurs besides from hardware failures, they can come and do it for me right?
-
It is summer and I am not working this summer, so I stay up late. Did the partition get resized after you installed vista? If so that is pretty strange. There are some partition editing tools that you can use to resize partitions.
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-do-i-resize-windows-partition-with-open-source-software.html you can do it with a linux live boot or use a utility mentioned in the comments. -
-
Now recovery Q: partition is taking up more useless space of 19GB when it usually only uses about 4GB. -
Ya, but i am asking if you noticed this just after the vista install. Though it is odd if it changed it. But was it like this BEFORE you installed vista (which would be odd in its own right)? But look into partition resizing utilities.
-
It keep asking me to install Client Security - Password Management when I click Control Panel.. I quit and reclicked Control Panel, it asks for it again.
Everything was same when I first recovered back to Home Basic.
Does 'Camera Center' includes the camera driver? I'm not going to remove all ThinkVantage, but some..
Client Security - Password Manager
css_manage_vista_tpm.exe keeps popping up to install it whenever I click Control Panel. I installed it two times, but it keeps asking when I close it and reclick Control Panel. -
You should be able to see the camera drive in add/remove programs.
-
Do you know what might be the problem with this?
Client Security - Password Manager
css_manage_vista_tpm.exe keeps popping up to install it whenever I click Control Panel. I installed it two times, but it keeps asking when I close it and reclick Control Panel. -
Does it run after you have installed it? And does control panel still fully open? Make sure you have the TPM drivers and services running and see if password manager actually opens.
-
Control Panel runs after I install (it asks for admin user verification three times per install). But when I close them and run CP again, same thing occurs.
I clicked Client Security Manager and now restarting to activate it.
It scared me for few seconds, since it just shut it down. I guess it's supposed to restart few times.
It's still asking for the software installation after I enrolled all the fingers..
I'm updating to latest applications/drivers using System Update and I noticed there is new version for Rescue and Recovery.. hmm.
Everything is running fine so far but Client Security Program installation running everytime I click Control Panel and some kind of unknown installation runs [but it quits within less than a second].
Client Security - Password Manager
css_manage_vista_tpm.exe keeps popping up to asking for administrative to install that program everytime I click Control Panel. It repeats once I closed them and clicked them again.
It seems like some type of installation is running when I run IE as well too.
Update: It seems like css_manage_vista_tpm.exe is running all over the place. So far, I found that happen when I click Windows Update and Windows Explorer..
I uninstalled all non-Lenovo bloatwares, disabled Lenovo startup programs such as Camera Center, Message Center, etc), updated to latest Lenovo and updating Windows Update now. I think that I'm going to keep all Lenovo programs for now. I'm cutting down the number of processors now by disabling unnecessary startups.
It seems like it has Windows Vista Ultimate EXTRAS installed on this laptop. I wikied and it has four additional features in addition to regular Ultimate version.
I'm thinking of switching the product keys to my retail CD since it doesn't seem right that Home Basic OEM is running activated on Ultimate version. Would it work if I switch the key under my Computer after the right click? -
strangesweet, you really need to learn how to edit posts.
-
I really think that I could use some of partition space.
I don't know why about 10GB of C: space went to Q: after the recovery while Q: is using only about 4GB as before.
Edit: Sorry about that. It just shows you that I'm very desperate right now. I've had this laptop for a week, but I've used less than 2 hours or so. And I need to go back to the dorm in few hours, so it's very important for me. Again, sorry. -
strangesweet... can you please start a new thread.. i been on here this whole week trying not to say anything but you basically overhauled this thread and took it way off topic. I will gladly help you once i receive my X200 but at the moment don't you think you would receive better assitance calling Lenovo. Because from what i read at the beginning of your post, it's just simple computer stuff that anyone whose not computer illiterate can perform. Thus (I'm assuming you're not), it must be something specific to Lenovo, which implies you should call Lenovo for support and keep them on the phone until you have solved your issue (for hours if you must). Heck if they don't solve your issue, at least they know how messed up the laptop is and would probably compensate for these issues.
Also by starting a new thread, you'll have a specific topic title which will probably grab more users to help uou.
Mainly I just want this thread to stay on topic... to only talk about people receiving their X200 and just their first impressions / pictures. Thanks -
Why don't you just do a clean Vista Ultamate installation again?
Once your machine boots from Ultamate DVD there is one step where you can choose C to install OS. Don't do it! There is an option icon at right bottom of the window, something like Advanced Partition Option or More Partition Option. Once you click that, the window will expand to show the two extra hidden partitions. From there, you can click the two partitons and click delete to delete them. You should also delete the original C partition. So now you will have a single disk of 64G. You click the single 64G disk and click the correct button (Create?) to create a new C partition of 64G. Once the new C is created, you just need to click it first and then click Install to install OS.
I am not sure about the OEM activation key part. I used the Key from my Windows Ultimate DVD and had no problem with activation.

Strangesweet, first of all, you should probably start a new thread in a different sub-forum where a number of people can help. This thread is way off-topic now.
Second, you misunderstood the "restore your system" process. You said:
I think you are making things much more difficult than they need to be by fooling around with several sets of discs (retail Ultimate DVD, burnt backup discs, Lenovo restore discs, now looking at an anytime upgrade DVD). All you need to restore your system to the factory state is R&R. Additionally, all of the headaches you are experiencing seem to be from the desire to get Vista Ultimate on your machine rather than Basic. Is all of this hassle really worth the additional features of Ultimate to you? Aside from the eye candy, do you even use the Ultimate features (like joining a domain)? I think you need to re-evaluate what your notebook's purpose is supposed to be. If you are spending hours upon hours maintaining your notebook rather than using it for school, you might consider just using the notebook as it came from the factory so that you can get down to work at school instead of being a full-time notebook technician!
Anyway, start a new thread. Put all of the backup media/restore discs etc away. Use R&R to do a factory restore. Do your school work. -
-
There was another user who experienced same problem when running R&R via hard drive.
I mean, Although I bought Ultimate long time ago, but what's the point of spending a lot when I'm not even going to use it?
About saving Q: and S:, I meant backing it up on an external media. So I don't think it mattered much since all of those are safely located at my external hard drive.
It's just a means of saving a backup because I read on R&R help section that it will delete Q: and S: and whatever you're not going to keep.
I absolutely had no problem when recovering from the discs, but I did what computer asked me to do using hard drive to recover, and computer did everything he needed to. He rebooted, and boom. I don't know what I can tell you. I think there's some kind of bugs since I'm not the only person reporting this problem with Lenovo Montevina machine. If there's another brave person who's willing to do it.. -
I originally followed Stellan's guide, but I did not see any same options that I seen on his guide in terms of partition resizing. -
what about the graphic card performance?
is the x200 able to run any 3d applications fast?
anybody tried some video games?
i know crysis doesnt run on it, but WHAT does? -
-
X200 no LED? Pfft....
They going to do a version with an LED screen?
Tom -
How quiet is the x200? Is the fan always on. For my sony sr, the fan is always running which makes it fairly noisy for me.

I just ordered mine and it states an estimated 09/25 ship date. How likely is it to ship on that date?
-
I too have that ship date. trying to find out if delays are still happening. Anyone out there have any tidbits?
-
I ordered before the weekend, and it says 9/30 as est. shipping date.
-
I ordered mine last night before the end of the sale and I have an expected delivery date of 9/26 which I am okay with because it gives me the opportunity to cancel if the e4300 is more appealing. Very excited to receive it nonetheless.

Soon coming - Thinkpad X200 with FREE 64GB SSD -
Lenovo seems to like to slip the ship date when you reach the first date. Many of us called or emailed them to threaten cancellation, and we got on a "critical list" where they shipped it out the next day via express.
-
I guess that's the least they could do considering how delayed it was.. I never threatened to cancel the order either as I figured since I had gotten the free SSD, that they would not have hesitated to cancel it so I couldn't use that as a bargaining tool..
-
I ordered mine on 9/12 and mine shipped today. I haven't decided whether or not I am happy about this as I was strongly considering the x200s because of the higher resolution. Guess it's been decided for me.
-
-
but ya i know Supermans has it worst but he received a free SSD so =P
anyways, i think you should keep it.. i personally would get the x200 if i had a choice with x200, x200s, x200tablet
X200 - Have any shipped yet?
