Awesome, thanks! Spare parts was out of the part so would appreciate it. PM incoming!
Also, I presume that I should never update my BIOS, right?
-
And if the card doesn't work, i lose 120$.
As for my system, i'm running 1.07 (svl7 mod) with GT 750M. Using a early June 13' model.
I wouldn't mind being able to upgrade to 2.07, but i don't wanna brick my system, this is currently the only working computer i have due to my desktop being non-functional for the time being. -
They probably will never release an official BIOS update so you really have no way to upgrade unless it is leaked.I don't think you will have a problem. It's a leaked official update package that has worked for many to both upgrade and downgrade their BIOS so they could then flash svl7's WLAN whitelist removal BIOS.
-
Aside from 755M card support, does 2.07 bring any other improvements over 1.07? But thanks, i'll try it in 2 weeks after my exams are over.
-
Ah, it seems there is a v3.05 that was leaked for both y410p and y510p: BIOS Update for Y410P/Y510P 74CN44WW (V3.05)
Assuming Lenovo did not regress on the issue then it should be fixed in that version also. -
Plus, if you upgrade to 2.07, you would be losing previously unlocked advanced bios options; and so won't be able to turn off cores and all other good stuff (unless there is a 2.07 mod other than the whitelist only one by svl7).
-
In that case forget it.
-
I would be ready to take the leap and get the $99 gpu; but i am on the 1.07 bios and dont want to lose my advanced bios features upgrading to the partially modded 2.07 plus I have the earlier model with the 750M.
I figure EmberV played around with one of the pre 2.07 bios and couldn't get the 755M gpu to work?
As of now there are two things I need before buying the card:
- Fully modded 2.07 bios (whitelist, advanced bios)
- Compatibility of the 755M ultrabay with the 750M gpu. -
You can "reclaim" your advanced features (core shutoff, EE, flex modifying) from ThrottleStop 7, which i don't know about it's release status. However ask UncleWebb for some more info.
-
I could forget about the bios unlock (as long as the whitelist is removed); but there is still the issue with the compatibility between 750 and the 755. Waiting for pdinc or anybody else with the 755m ultrabay to post pics of their pcb.
Bjulkes likes this. -
Perhaps @svl7 or @Prema would be willing to take a look if you donate enough money
-
So where are we so far? Are they ever going to release 755M's for SLI on the 410p?
-
Not officially, but we've estabilished that the Y510p variant works fine electrically, though the bezel/track are mechanically incompatible. The 14" bezel is no longer available for purchase, but the 15" bezel can be cut down to fit. The 14" Ultrabay track can be purchased separately from Lenovo spare parts in the US over the phone. The part number is available on pg 94 of the y410p hardware maintanence manual (dont remember it off the top of my head).
-
Has anyone tried using the GN35 (Y400 650M) with dSLI?
There are 3 advantages of the GN35 in my eyes:
- Fits perfectly, no powertools required. Looks nice and flush, fits with the laptop.
- 650M runs a lot cooler than 755M/750M.
- Can be purchased in Canada.
AFAIK all that would be needed would be v2.07 with blacklist mod + Windows 7 w/dSLI. -
You'd have to be comfortable with flashing the vBIOS and changing the device id. No idea how stable that config is. Personally, I'm more comfortable with hacking the bezel (literally) than mucking around with the BIOS, but it depends on your level of risk tolerance.
-
if i order the $99 GT755m module I'd be flashing a new bios, etc anyway.
-
True, but you could also get the GT750M card for the Y510p. I presume that'd also work out of the box.
-
dSLI ignores that and forces the GPU's to SLI together anyways. Since both are based on the GK107 core with 384 shaders and 2GB GDDR5 they should have no problem SLI-ing together. In fact, you can SLI (desktop) 660 and 760 using dSLI.
More info here:
SLI with different cards | TechPowerUp Forums -
So, I could buy the US $99 GT755m card and use dSLI? Does it work with Win8?
-
Probably not. The first 3 letters of the dev id need to match.
SLI with different cards | Page 32 | TechPowerUp Forums
But you'll never know until someone tests it.
Edit: Assuming u have the 750m that is. -
Ah, these GPUs are specifically mentioned in post 800. Suck! Why would the Dev ID be different for the same GPU chip and Vram?
-
650M, 750M and 755M all have the same dev ID's.
-
I'd be willing to donate the $99 (or rather a card instead of cash) to get someone with a buspirate (I don't have one) to try and flash a 755m -> 750m, then get it working on a y410p with 750m & 1.07 bios, which is what I have.
Getting my August 2013 y410p w/ 750m to properly SLI would be pretty slick, but I'm pretty unfamiliar with vbios flashing. 128GB NGFF + 1TB + 750m SLI + 4th gen i7 in a 5 pound 14" package would be rather absurd.
Lmk... it would be good for the community anyways. -
I'm seriously close to pulling the trigger and seeing what happens. Don't have a Bus pirate, but it's only $30 shipped.
I've got a June '13 Y410P with the GT750M. -
Okay, I have a Lenovo Y40P with a GT755M. To verify, I would need the following to get this to work. The card: Y510P Removable Graphics GT755M5 | Lenovo | (US)
And this: 2nd HDD SSD Hard Drive Caddy for Lenovo IdeaPad Y400N Y410N Y410P with Bezel | eBay
Would I need to do anything else, or would I be good after getting those two things? -
you'll need also to switch the plastic frame of the ultrabay to make it match inside the slot. You can see it at pag 93 in this manual: http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_y410p_y510p_hmm.pdf
the frame is part #3 on the removable VGA card, FRU number 90201962 on the following page.
My true concern actually is about switching the bezel istead of dremeling it, since the caddy bezel you've linked has no opening for air to ventilate the gpu, and I'd fear some serious heating problem if you put that on. -
I don't want it to overheat. What exactly is dremeling and how does it work? A Google search provided no answers. Also, how would I order the frame part?
-
check from previous posts on this thread, page 3-4-5 in particular. The guy who did it (@pdinc) modified the bezel with a dremel
( https://www.google.it/search?q=drem...xYDQBQ&sqi=2&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ&biw=1600&bih=775 )
and ordered the frame by phone on lenovo parts (US)
However is all described in detail in the previous pages. -
Hah, yes. The GPU gets hot, you'll definitely want ventilation.
I'm meeting up with EmberV this weekend and he's graciously offered me his 14" bezel since he doesn't have a y410p anymore. I may talk to some of my PhD friends and see if I can scan it into a solidworks file or something for people to 3D print. -
Am I missing something? If I am, I might get a 650M and test it out.
-
Is there any interest at all in a 3D-printable scan of the bezel?
-
Yes!!! I have 3d printers at my school
-
If you scan the bezel it would be very much appreciated also a scan of the frame
-
Using Lenovo EPP, the GT755M5 drops a few dollars to $96.99 , and the GT750M drops $23 to $206.99. I tried a chat with Lenovo to see if they'd lower the GT750M5 price... It was a giant waste of my time.
Hey Ember, do we know what the issue was with previous Yx10P SLI attempts? Was it a run of defective GT750M5 cards, or an issue with the 1.x bios that maybe the 2.07 or 3.07 bios solves? -
I tried this today as well, they will not lower the price even though the GT755M5 and GT750M5 are such similar cards. I asked the rep if there is an ETA on any M4 variant 750/755 models ever being released and he said, sadly, there is no plan to. He himself was waiting on the M4 cards for his y410p as well. Sad stories of a Lenovo employee.
-
Tell me about it, the GN35 (650M) for the y400 is still $229.99. I called Lenovo as well and what happened? They "couldn't do anything." Geez.
However I recommend that you guys use the Barnes and Noble link, the savings are actually sightly better than the ones listed above. -
Any news/updates on the PCB differences between the GT750M5 and GT755M5?
-
Still waiting for news as well. I recently bought the GT755m to hopefully match it up with my GT750M
-
Same. Worst case if nothing works, I'll just sell it to someone who can't get Lenovo USA pricing.
Edit: Mine comes on Monday, so I'll just go ahead and take some pictures of the PCB as well. -
How on Earth do you remove the bezel from the GT755M5? I've found some videos on youtube and they seem to just wrench it off with their hands.
-
LOL don't do that. It's screwed on.
-
I figured as much. It didn't pop off with a gentle pull, and I wasn't about to rip the bezel off with any additional force.
-
Then the only way is to grind the bezel in order to fit in the laptop without removing it from the gpu? Seems odd...
Can you link the videos you were talking about? -
Here's one, I can't find the other one I saw. It's at around 0:40
How-to Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p adding 2nd HDD / SSD using DVD / optical drive bay with HDD Caddy - YouTube -
Don't think its screwed on. Just hard to take out. I had somewhat of a hard time removing the bezel on the optical drive to swap it for the hdd caddy. You just need to figure out the correct angle when applying pressure.
-
It's not pop-off like the optical drive bezel. It's screwed on. Trust me. I've taken apart a couple of these Ultrabay GPU's myself.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ide...-pictures-disassembled-y500-ultrabay-gpu.html -
It's screwed on.
-
Aah ok. My mistake.
-
HERE IT IS! All the pictures you could ever need of the GT755M5 Ultrabay Video Card...
GT755M5 Pictures - Imgur Album
All 7MP resolution photos, so I'm not going to embed anything on this forum.
It unfortunately does nothing useful in an unmodified August '13 1.07 bios y410p w/750m, just tells me something about vegetables:
A picture of produce
If somebody could please let me know of any additional steps such as VBIOS/BIOS reflashing or unlocking to remove whitelisting, please let me know. If not I'll just end up selling this card to someone with a 755m y410/510p.
Notes:
-Of course Lenovo lathered on the thermal compound, so I just re-pasted it with the proper amount of OCZ freeze.
-One of the RAM chips does NOT come with thermal padding FROM THE FACTORY. There is not even a spot on the heatsink for a thermal pad, which I thought was very interesting. So that means 7/8 of the memory chips have a heat spreader and the other one just doesn't. You can see it on the top picture of the heat sink. Who knows...
