AMAZING! Thanks for this :D Is there any way you could do some kind of ghosting/screen tear test with each monitor? If the AUO is really that much dimmer I might go with the LG but the 35ms response time was worrying for gaming.

If you look a couple pages back, I suggested three TN panels with much better stats than the original one--but not as good as an IPS. However, response times are in the 8-12 range.

Interesting--the model number they gave for theirs looks like a slightly better panel still compared to the other two models being shipped with this laptop...hm...

The price difference between Lenovo Y50 FHD and 4K display is like $30. If I purchase the 4K display and don't get satisfied, can it be replaced with any of the mentioned FHD panels?

Gaming? On a laptop? Never heard of it.

So for the response test I had to devise an animation at 60fps that contains some simple lines and colors that move across the screen at various rates.

There are three groups which traverse the screen at distinct speeds: 10 sec, 5 sec, 1.67 sec.
It was captured back at 60fps. Unfortunately Youtube will not let you see the 60fps, I'm posting the video for reference anyhow:
    YouTube

    Here are the results:

First panel - LG LP156WF4(SP)(U1) - Stated response rate 35ms - Observed - 3 tails on the 1.6 second group (fastest moving group)
Second panel - AUO B156HAN01.2 - Stated response rate 25ms - Observed - 2 tails on the 1.6 second group (fastest moving group)
Original panel - InnoLux N156HGE-EAB - Stated response rate 3 or 8ms (TN panel asynchronous) - Observed - 2 tails on the 1.6 second group (fastest moving group)

    ScreenShot.png

P.S. For some reason the Y50 graphics driver seems to be outputting whites at 9700k - that's why the white squares look blueish - the camera was white balanced to a 3600k (natural white point for our lighting config)

So basically, from all the tests and pictures,

    1) Original panel is fairly mediocre
    2) Either LG or the AUO panels are dramatic improvements
    3) All of the panels should be calibrated individually to show the best color (and re-calibrated monthly if you care about continual color accuracy)

Personally I still like the LG panel, although it's glossy.

As far as response rates - neither of the panels are remarkable - the LG panel is slowest.

Hi, I just got my new Y50 with 1920x1080 CHIMEI screen and I want to replace it with the best available matte screen. I'm not gaming so response time won't matter unless it's noticeable while using other programs. It looks like there so many models of LG and AUO screens and not knowing the difference between models makes it hard to choose and buy one. Can someone recommend the best brand/model? Thanks.

It would seem that there's actually not a noticeable difference between the AUO and the InnoLux...

Also, YouTube just rolled out support for 60fps video but I have no idea how to upload it that way XD

Just got the AUO screen today and tried to replace it, but for some reason the laptop is not booting now. I know I can break things, but this fast?! The screen is not showing anything and the keyboard is flashing every few seconds. I tried to put the original screen back and it's not working either. Called Lenovo and they were like "why would you replace the screen? why didn't you send it to us for replacement? do you know that you voided the warranty? good luck!", and I said "Goodbye". I think it is a connection issue, though disconnecting and reconnecting is not working. Can someone help me troubleshoot it please? ((

    What's the difference between
    *LP156WF4(SP)(B1)
    *LP156WF4(SP)(D1)

from panelook.com, the B1 is .2 mm thicker , has higher power consumption and has slightly wider viewing angles
I'm thinking of going in for the LG D1 instead of AUO as it seems LG displays have lesser problems

Hi! Have I understood correctly that
    (a) the B156HAN0 1.1 and B156HAN 01.2 are for all practical purposes identical (screen quality, size, placement of fixing holes etc.)?
    (b) the 02 is the newer version (as the 01 seems harder to find)?

    Thanks!

Update: Got my replacement screen from lcdtech and it is AWESOME. As for lcdtech, I could not be more impressed with their service. I received my original screen on a Saturday via FedEx. I emailed lcdtech that day and they responded immediately, asking me to send a few photos of the damaged screen/package and assuring me that a replacement screen would be sent shortly. Replacement was shipped on Monday and I received it on Wednesday. They did not require me to ship anything back to them, as they filed a claim with FedEx. Awesome service - very highly recommended.

Hello ryams27, can you tell if you bought matte or glossy version? On ebay sellers have only AUO B156HAN01.2 matte screens and i'm worried about that becouse after some research glossy is better than matte when it comes to color reproduction and i really need collor accuracy.

    Hi,

I just got the Y50 with AUO36ED and honestly it doesn't look that bad.
Yes, the viewing angles are bad but that's what you get with a TN screen.
This is a gaming laptop,I think the better viewing angles aren't enough to offset the slower response times of the IPS.

The issue of matte vs. glossy as far as color accuracy is concerned is not so simple. Under ideal circumstances, glossy may be more "accurate" than matte bercause of the matte coating - all else being equal. But light falling on a glossy (reflective) screen will completely spoil the accuracy. If you choose glossy, environment - ambiental light - is key. Matte is much more forgiving.

Also, the two screens, the glossy and the matte, would have to be for all other purposes identical for a choice to be that simple. If a TN is glossy, it will still exhibit significant changes in hue with the smallest of changes in vertical position. An IPS might be better, even if it is matte.

Thirdly, a glossy IPS with a 60% aRGB gamut will be less accurate than a matte IPS (and even a matte TN) with a better (say, 90% aRGB) gamut. However, the crucial question here is what you use it for. If all you need in terms of color space is sRGB, then +/- 100% sRGB will be enough, even if that usually translates into 70+% aRGB.

Fourthly, even with high-gamut screens, the deviation from the "true" color (the famous Delta E) might be smaller or larger, whether you're dealing with TN or IPS, glossy or matte. Depending on your needs, this might matter more or less.

Finally, individual panel quality is crucial. Bleeding or tinting might completely ruin the accuracy in corners (or other areas) of your panel.

ERGO: Choosing a screen for color accuracy is a decision which has to take into account a relatively large number of issues. Glossy vs. matte is only one of them, and not even a central one.

HI everyone, I just got the b156han01.2, how do i update my drivers for the screen?

My games are capped at 45 FPS, and the color seems off. Any help will be good.

    thanks!

(EDIT FIXED: was on integrated graphics -.-....)

the b156an is amazing, i dont play first shooting games so the slower response time isnt noticable at all for me. I just play league of legends. Watched a movie and the color is crisp. Puts the oem panel to dirt.

Only complaint is there are a mini line of dead pixels in the upper right corner, but can only see if the screen/background is pitch black.

    other than that its fine

    READ

I want to give everyone in this thread a fair warning. Maybe I just have really bad luck, but I am now on my third B156HAN01.2 and am preparing to RMA it. The first had minor screen retention / image burn along the top. The second had severe brightness issues (very dim) and the third one that I am on right now has major screen retention issues.

Needless to say I am very frustrated with the situation, and I'm sure the seller is too. They've been good about replacing and cross shipping new monitors as the RMA process for each one has progressed, but going forward I am opting to try the LG (specifically this one: LP156WF4(SP)(U1) Replacement Laptop LCD Screen From $59.99 Brand-new screens. IPS version obviously).

Like I said, perhaps I just have bad luck but I have had nothing but bad luck and experience with 3 B156HAN01.2 panels now.

For your issues, did these occur the first day you have installed the panel? Or did this happen few days/weeks later? Im on the b15han right now, Day #1 so far, and it has been amazing. I hope I dont run into your ghosting issues..this panel isnt super bright, but its bright enough for my normal use.

BTW, page 97 in the hardware maintenance manual:
    http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_y40_50_series_hmm.pdf
    snapshot1.png
shows the FRU numbers of screens
Both the LTN156FL02-L01 UHD (18201586) and the EDP C Y50-70 UHD (5C10F78811) are eDP
the latter (5C10F78811) is the one that appeared in the supposedly LVDS connector image, but i guess it's edp.

Still doesn't answer my question though. and seems like i will need a new connector cable (eDP 4 lanes instead of 2 lanes), will it be 'easy' to replace?

Since 2-lane screens work in 4-lane connectors, I would guess Lenovo used the same connector for both. Fingers crossed. I'm almost tempted to buy this 4-lane eDP one and see if it works...

Since the last Nvidia driver the brightness control seems to be broken:
both the keyboard shortcuts and the settings screen brightness doesn't work.

How can I fix it, and does anyone else have the same problem?

Hi guys. I just recently bought a Y50 that came with a Chi Mei screen. The screen did not seem so bad after I spent some time adjusting the colors based on some youtube videos I found and also increasing the brightness nearly to the max. I noticed the biggest difference is when I look at another screen next to it and I see the colors are pretty far off. For example, the blues are more purpls... the white is not so white compared to the other screen. So my question is this: I have the opportunity to buy a B156HAN01.2 for about 139.99 locally. I play all kinds of games (though recently I have plugged my laptop to a external monitor) so gaming and refresh rate is important for me.

Is it really worth the trouble to get and install the B156HAN01.2 screen? How is it for gaming and first person shooters? OR is there some more adjustments I can do to correct the picture quality on the Chi Mei?? Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated.

It's worth it, color is on point, image is crisp when it comes to watching movies, viewing angles are amazing. I only play league of legends, and it works fine for me.

Its been 5 days with b156han01.2, and the only complaint i have is having some image ghosting issues. I was hoping someone can chime in and maybe I can get rid of the ghosting, or is this just a manufacturer defect.

but overall its a must to upgrade over the OEM panel.

Hi everyone, made an account just for this and I wanted to thank everyone for the information so far.

However, I did not fully read through all 90 pages of this so I just want to understand the general results here.

So far my issues with this display are as follows:
-The yellows are a weird color(obviously)
-The screen changes brightness when text is highlighted (which oddly fixes the yellows)
    -The locked 48Hz refresh rate

I know these are obvious, my question is this: does replacing this screen fix any or all of these issues? Or is it basically just a better display?
If these issues still persist then I won't bother with it, but if it just takes a new screen to fix all of these then I am all about it.

    Thanks!

That's for the 4K display--there hasn't been any confirmed screen replacements for that one due to some weird stuff with the connector...but for the 1080p screen, replacing the screen fixes every issue it had before, except refresh rate which isn't even that bad.

    I though I would...hehe... chimei in...bad puns...

Seems like it's a QC issue--when looking at LaptopScreen's tests, the AUO didn't seem any less responsive than the Chimei. I, too, got the chimei and it seems alright. I'll be upgrading the screen after upgrading to an 850 Pro SSD...seems like a bigger issue here :D

This is getting annoying, my first AUO B156han screen was defective, i had a vertical black strip in the middle. Now this one was almost perfect, until I noticed ghosting couple days into using this new panel. I plan on getting the same ssd for my laptop too :)

Before getting another screen, get some canned air and blow out both ends of the plug, then reaaaly carefully make sure it's plugged in all the way, and put a piece of tape over the connector to keep it in place. See if that works...

So, there is no chance to actually replace the uhd 4k display?
I am returning the y50-70, in case the display can't be replaced...

Hi, I've replaced the original chimei screen with the LG lp156wf4 spb1 but I 've a screen retention issue..anyone else with this screen has the same problem? It happens when a fixed image persists on the screen for some minutes, as a desktop background or an opened browser and then when I turn off the pc (with the Gray background of Windows system powering off? ) I still can see a blurred image of previous desktop
