Calibrating is bit of a stretch for me. Since it requires a physical device purchase. So that there is an improvement in some cases. And you have to keep calibrating it every so many months? Too big of a hassle kind of.
I usually never go further than ram/hard drive replacements. The attempt to get a different screen was just a desperate measure since I have never seen such a bad screen (of any type) in my entire life as the one that came with the Y50-70. Technology went like 30 years back in my opinion when I saw the monitor that came with the laptop.

Yeah it does heavy rely on the hardware and software that calibrates. NotebookCheck review site their Colourimetre and software gets them about 59-60% Adobe RGB and 90-92% sRGB coverage for the AUO B156HAN01.2 disply. But from what I understand, 70% Adobe RGB coverage is pretty standard on many display and you most likely won't notice the difference. It is definitely worth calibrating if you're doing a lot of professional work, but I just wanted all my monitors/TV that I use to be consistent in brightness, gamma and colour and using DispcalGUI I managed to do so.

Not quite, you don't have to calibrate every month or every few other months. It's just I brought the display recently like 1 month before and since it's a new display the colour changes during that burn in period. Just like headphones, the sound changes after a month of using. Well people do recommend calibrating once a month as colour do change over time. Also the first time I calibrated the coverage was a lot lesser as well.

I do agree with you that the previous display was horrendous, I couldn't even last 1 month using it. It's mostly due to the fact I use my main monitor and having the **** display next to my desktop monitor it bugged me to no end.

I agree with the post above. You most likely will not need to calibrate every month. But there's nothing wrong in doing so. However, if you do manage to get a chance to calibrate your TN panel, do it! It looks a lot better when it's been calibrated. No where near the new IPS display, but it's still an improvement.

I couldn't find a option to search the thread, so...

Has anyone successfully swapped the Y50-70 Touch display for an IPS model? It seems to be a breeze on the non-touch model, but I can't find anything for the touch model.
Also, Lenovo seems to have learned and the new 2015 models are coming with IPS. Would it be compatible with the 2014 models with TN Panel?

Im interested in changing the panel but keeping the digitizer , have you disassembled your laptop? you need to check if the digitizer is glued with the panel , i dont dare to disassemble mine because i want to sell it if i cant change the panel , and im newbie to laptops ,so i dont want to break anything

WOW! just replaced my screen with a AUO B156HAN01.2 from Amazon.ca.
That is a significant difference. I thought there was a lot of fog in MWO, there isnt it was just the sreen.
All the colours are vibrant and not cast under a gray overlay.
Very happy with the Y50 now.

A year ago, I replaced my Lenovo Y50-70 touch's entire front unit and made it a non-touch with a B156HAN1.2 IPS panel. I'm not fond of touchscreen anyways so I thought I'd give it a shot by myself.
You can choose to just buy an IPS panel plastered with a digitizer and just replace the one you have- removing the digitizer is no easy trick as it was glued to my panel. Or you can turn your touch into a non-touch which sets you back quite a bit of money and time. You'd have to replace the bezel, buy a lid and non-touch LCD cable and an IPS panel and not break something in the process. (My repair job finally had it after 6 months so I felt the need to rant a bit)

You can replace the TN with the ones for the new Lenovo provided they have the same resolution, size, fitting, signal interface and cable( the touch cable has three connectors for video data, webcam and the digitizer). You should still check up on that because I'm not too sure about it. There are IPS panels with digitizers online- I found a couple when I was going screen-hunting and those are preferable to just buying a panel because removing the digitizer from the original isn't easy especially if it's glued on. And they don't work as well as they should if you reuse them.

This link from Lenovo should give you details on how to detach the TN panel (scroll down to removal steps of touch unit Y50) and following the steps in reverse will let you set up the replacement TN.

Still, while it was working, the screen quality was incredible and you couldn't tell from the outside that it was modded. Replacing the TN panel is definitely feasible, at least from the steps in the guide in the above post, and much less taxing.

While I'm here, I read that Samsung has an IPS panel LTN156HL06-C01 which has great quality and is a true 8-bit panel (the only one which supposedly fits in the Y50). It has the same backlight, signal interface, size, fitting and res as the original panel and it should work but I'm wondering whether here has done a successful replacement with that model.

i recently bought a lenovo y50-70-59443538 with the monitor LP156WF4(SP)(L1) and i've had tons of trouble with darker images and movies. i can not at all see anything remotely black and it all meshes with each other to make an unidentifiable blob. i want to know if it's a problem b/c it's a matte finish monitor or is it just that i need a new monitor? if so would the LP156WF4(SP)(D1) be a good replacement?

This has got to be the most fustrating thread I've read in awhile. While the color/brightness might be better, it seems impossible to cram in a 30-pin eDP connected 15.6 top/bottom screwed in panel with a decent refresh rate? I don't quite understand why. I'd like to game on my Y50-70, but that seems unlikely when the screen is so lackluster, and the alternatives have terrible response times..

Edit: It appears Samsung LTN156HL01-102 has a 16ms response time. But I currently have the touch version. Which apparently has a digitizer glued on the front of the panel.. trying to research how to apply a new digitizer, or replace the bevels so the new screen will fit on.

Weird that you're having that issue, given its an IPS panel and normally shouldn't suffer from issues with dark images.

The brightness of that display is sub-par (220nits) but should still be acceptable, and its contrast ratio of 700:1 is decent.

Not sure if calibrating it would help. The matte finish shouldn't really be a factor.

Are you open to losing the touch function? I had the same concerns about response times but I have not had any trouble after moving to the AUO screen. I've played a little BF4, a lot of Civ5, and a modest amount of ESO without any problems. Also, there was some discussion in this thread awhile ago that linked to a reddit post which suggested the response time advertised is a lot higher than the actual response time.

How exactly did yo switch the screen on the touch version to a non-touch one? I've been looking at this thread and while people have gotten it to work, no one seems to have made a proper walkthrough on the process. Also where did you buy the bezel/lid/cables from? I really want to do this mod, but I'm not completely sure how difficult the task is.

I did not have the touch but I remember people that did who made the switch. I don't know the procedure.

Is there a compatible screen that has 100% sRGB color gamut coverage?

Edit: It seems like the Samsung LTN156HL01 has 72% NTSC which is roughly 100% sRGB (It's used it the MSI PE60 2QE Prestige). Might be worth a try.

Hey guys, got my Y50 3 months ago and I hate this screen. I'm looking to replace it, but it seems like the original models recommended have been discontinued from both the ebay sellers and the laptop screen website on the first page. Are there new updated screens people are using? I found this guy who a number of people purchased from, but he told me the screen model i was asking for had been discontinued and that this one would work, any ideas?

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/40091787966...1&exe=12808&ext=32575&sojTags=exe=exe,ext=ext

Any alternative better suggestions if not this one? Thanks.

I just ordered the LTN156HL02-002 from eBay. Its almost exactly the same as the HL01 model that most people buy but this one has a higher measured contrast ratio and gamut. It seems this panel is put into workstation laptops needing high colour accuracy. Hence its a little rarer to find. But has the same response time so should be fine for gaming still.

I received it today and it was the actual model, not some cheap replacement. The seller below only sells actual Samsung panels.

    http://www.ebay.ca/itm/201383637746?redirect=mobile

Anyway I will report back once I install and test it. But that means I have my LP156WF6-SPB1 which I don't need anymore. If anyone is interested in that LG IPS panel, I'll let it go for a good price.

Lol shoot! Sorry just been hectic recently.

Well I'm extremely happy with this panel. Better black levels, viewing angles and coulour gamet overall compared to the LP156WF6. The response time looks to be the same, I haven't noticed it increase which means its still around that 16ms (Tr + Td). Which is great for most gamers save those hardcore competitive CS guys. You certainly won't get better response times without going to a TN panel.

I'd say the Samsung HL01 or HL02 are still the best all around IPS/PLS panels for a notebook.

So the HL02 has better contrast ratio and color gamut compared to the HL01?

From what I've read it does apparently. Although panel info websites don't show this difference so I dunno. Regardless, I tend to believe that as these panels are used in graphic workstations only (which need accurate panels) where as the HL01 is used in high end gaming systems.

All I can say is its an amazing panel compared to the LG one. And that was already a great IPS screen.

I feel stupid for asking this and I assume the answer is yes from the bits and pieces I've looked around at, but is the motherboard the same for the touch and non-touch versions? Mine went kaput and I wanted to buy one that went with my non-touch screen. From what I've heard the connectors seem to be the same size.

EDIT: I think after some more searching, I've found my answer.

So with the discontinue of the older B156HAN01.2 screen can someone recommend where to buy an IPS replacement for the stock Y50 screen?

    Anything from https://www.laptopscreen.com/?

Great to hear. Do you or anyone else know what the difference is between the LTN156HL02-201 and 202? I'd like to buy this panel but most of the ones I'm seeing are 201 and you apparently bought the 202.

i'm sorry, i really don't feel like going through 120+ pages.

    i have a 2015 model with 960m. it's a touchscreen version.

now my screen is really awful to look at. even at max brightness, it's still dark as where the sun don't shine.

what would be my best option for a replacement screen?

i don't mind loosing touch capabilities at all.

    Hey Guys,

I have replaced my screen year ago with the B156HAN0 1.2 but I am not very satisfied with it as it has a lot of bleeding around the edges.

I am thinking of replacing it with either (LG)LP156WF6 or (Samsung)LTN156HL01.

Anyone has any information about them and how well they perform and fit of course.

    All the best,

Did anyone ever successfully swap the original digitizer to their new IPS screen? Also, is it recommended to use a glossy or matte screen, since the glass will be reflective no matter what?

    I'm looking at these: https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/IBM-Lenovo/LENOVO Y50-70 59426255/

I'd like to order this and an SSD within the next month, I'm so tired of my top corners of the screen being messed up if i'm looking straight at it, otherwise i have to look slightly down which washes everything out some

Hi, recently i ordered B156HAN01.2 but instead they send me LP156WF4-SPH3, there spec appears to be similar.
My question is which one of them is better?
Should i keep this one or tell them that they should send me a replacement?

Any how i will connect it and see if it works.

    Thanks.

for some reason this thread kind of died down.

i guess everyone moved on to something better.

i still love my y50 and would definitelly swap the screen if i just had some more info.

there's plenty of information in here regarding the non-touch screens. but mine is a touchscreen with digitizer. i'm afraid to break it.

    oh well

is there a thread for UHD? namely the newest Y50 models using gtx 960m.. i'm interested in the stock 4K display differences between touch and non-touch.. are the former all glossy and samsung? are the latter all matte and lg? are there different models or revisions? is general consensus that the stock panels for UHD models need to be swapped out too?

I installed the LTN157HL01 and it is the best display I've ever seen on a laptop. Nevertheless I have an issue with it, after I installed it, and a couple of weeks went by, the screen sometimes flickers on and off. I re-checked the connectors and apparently something's wrong, because the connector is fully seated and yet with the laptop disassembled, the screen goes off! I wiggle the connector a bit and it comes on again.

Obviously, since I changed the monitor I have no warranty left on my laptop. Could it be a screen or a connector issue? How could I troubleshoot this issue?

Are you sure it is LTN157HL01? If so, can you provide the link to the vendor you bought the screen from

    LTN157HL02

Bought it from this seller. I think he doesn't have any now.

The screen is freaking amazing. Photoshop looks out of this world. I have added sticky tape to the connector, trying to fix it in place. After a while the problem returns. :(

There is no screen as LTN157.

Can you take a screen shot of the back of the screen. I don't know how u can fix the connector, there has to be a better way than simply taping it with an adhesive. keep us posted. I have managed to get 3 screens now! lol
