Hi Brian,
Did you hear anything about the 4k touch yet I don't know how much longer I can hold off.

Amazing work- thanks for the pics.
Have you noticed lower battery life using the B156HAN0.2? -
Haven't tested it yet, I'll let you guys know when I do it.
-
if you have read any reviews on notebookcheck you would know that both of these GSs are nukes.
nbc's comment on gs70 is
"What surprises us
A few degrees centigrade more, and the laptop could be used for cooking."
so yeah, if you don't want y50, I would not be looking at those two and instead look at something like gigabyte p34g v2 -
Y50-UHD(4k) Display ONLY:
- Those of you that HAVE DONE the HD system wipe and system re-install (to kill the bloatware):
- Is there a reference page or address for this process?
- What software in particular did/should you leave on/in the system?
- Perhaps it is easier to ask "what did you remove from the system"?
- Any references for "optimal" screen settings for the UHD display for current day gaming?
- Colors/Gamma/Etc?
- Screen resolution (1080, etc)?
- Other sources or suggestions?
- I attempted driver updates via the "normal" My Computer venue with no noted updates found. However, I keep seeing various driver updates mentioned by people. Where or how do I get the appropriate steps to update these (audio/visual/wifi/etc) drivers more...force-ably?

I spent a few hours looking post by post through this thread. I wanted to ask the likeliness that my y50 will be shipped sooner than the estimated delivery date of nearly 2.5 months from today (already been 2 weeks). Can you guys let me know if you ordered within the last two weeks and have a better estimated ship date? Thanks! Also, is there a penalty to canceling this order if need be? (I ordered from lenovo directly)
-

Which model did you order that says 2.5 months out? I've never seen a 3 month lead time from order. -
Hey guys I have been following this post for a quiet a while and am still debating whether to get the Y50. Meanwhile I am looking at some other choices. Can someone recommend similar laptops that are available now or laptops that will come out soon? Thanks.
I have checked out the ASUS N550jk but it seems like the Nvidia 850M is much slower than the 860M any other choices? -
The best alternate choice IMO is the p34g v2. I've narrowed it down to either that or the Y50 at this point. Just waiting on word on this 48 hz issue now, which likely will decide which side I swing
-
I am debating on getting the lenovo y40/50/ or asus n550jk. I am going to college in the Fall, and already have a surface pro 3 to use for my classes. I will be using the secondary laptop for multimedia purposes. I also prefer a 15.6 inch screen, which is why I am hesitant with the y40.
Also, will the y50 screen quality be fine for someone who only plans on using it for gaming, movies, writing papers, programing?
I like the portability of the y40/50 over the n550jk too. The n550jk looks quite bulky/thick.
I also looked at the g550jk, and was wondering if that model would be lighter since it has no touchscreen. If I remove the optical drive in the n/g550jk, would it make a dent in the weight?
If anyone has any other laptop suggestions please let me know! My budget is between $1100-$1200.
Thanks! -
man! dont wait any update anymore. brian from klickonline knows the answer very well that the panel is 48 Hz itself. You cant do nothing for that. he is being quite for their marketing strategy. I have already changed my plan to buy a Y50, instead I am gonna go for Gigabyte P25W V2 CF5, the one i am sending at the link is the yellow version but there is also black version. it has everything you are looking for and much more powerful with 6 Gb GTX 870M, Core i7-4810MQ (2.8-3.8GHz) and IPS matte display. You may only need to order another 8 gb of ram.
Gigabyte P25W v2-CF5 15.6" Gaming Laptop - Yellow. Gigabyte P25W v2-CF5 -
Unfortunately the p25w is not portable enough for me. If the Y50 is locked to 48hz I will go with the p34g v2.
What makes you say that he's withholding information? He's done nothing to suggest so... -
Thanks.I sent them an email recently and haven't received anything yet, but I do noticed they start listing different models but none of them is for Y50 touch.
-
Yeah, thanks.I did see some people managed to replace their display, but only for none touch model as far as I know.If I missed something, please let me know.I will be very grateful for that.
-
I am able to get the answer from lenovo customer support in 2 days, but USA sales partner cannot within a half month! come on!
-
Is there any difference in battery life?
-
I'm in the same dilemma that you are in (except I don't want nor care about 4k). The pros and cons of both laptops are making it hard for me to decide. The Lenovo has more bang for the buck being a little cheaper and coming with more system ram, and has a slightly larger screen, but the p34gv2 has a higher quality screen and is more elegant looking. Insofar as the SSD that comes standard on most p34gV2's, that is more a nuisance for me. I plan on putting in a 512gb SSD into whichever laptop I get and selling the pre-existing drives. Also, I'm not a fan of the red accents that the y50 has. But $1250 is a solid $200 cheaper than the gigabyte, and the temps with the Lenovo are considerably better.......
UGH. If the gigabyte was $1300, even without the SSD, I think I'd get it. But that's not the case and I have to stay within a certain budget. :/ -
Did you specify if the panel is capable of 60hz at 1080p and if its merely software locked? Something tells me you didn't. Brian has little reason to withhold that from the people here since the UHD model will sell regardless.
-
If the screen bothers you so much you can switch out the Y50 screen for a better one there's a thread on here dedicated to replacement displays(likely voids warranty however). I saw one review say the keyboard wasn't great for gaming and the fan noise is really loud on the V2. Then again it does weigh like 3.5 pounds its pretty spectacular its as slim as it is with that much power.
-
You see the p34g v2 is very good alternative to the Y50 but the only thing holding me back is the 14 inch screen. I will use this laptop for multiple uses and therefore need the screen at least 15.6. I was thinking going with the Sager but then again they look bulky and don't have windows preinstalled which ends up costing more or about the same as the Y50. Are there any other laptops from other makers coming to market soon? Also, will there be problems with the UHD Y50, I've heard discussions that many programs will not scale to the 4K resolution even when you bring the screen resolution down to 1920 x 1080 any info on that?
-
Hey guys so I just recieved my Y50 laptop today and it's been awesome. I bought a 1 tb SSD to replace the HDD (which I put in an enclosure.) So that means I had to install a fresh copy of windows 8.1. And I backed up all the old drivers too. However, when I go into device manager it keeps giving an error about the SMbus controller which is the trackpad driver. I've tried 3 different driver installations and everyone says it doesn't detect a Synaptics trackpad device. So I'm really confused what the issue is. Any thoughts?
-
Wait, they specifically told you that the panel will not go above 48 hz and there will be no updates to the drivers?
-
It was an example I questioned for another inquiry regarding my Y510. Anyway, what I am saying is simple. The answer we need is that if the panel capable only for 48 fps? if those responsible people remain quite, then answer is clear.

Why would I even suggest that I will try to find an answer if that were my intention? I would have simply not said anything. I, along with the rest of the world at this point, do not know if anything is being done to release the lock on 48Hz on lower resolutions.nhasian, heibk201, roydok and 1 other person like this. -
There's a huge difference between posting a question on their site and having some random CSR answer with what's on their spec sheet and having Brian actually contact the correct people who can provide the correct answer. The design staff/screen manufacturer will know the screen capabilities. CSRs know nothing beyond what's on their spec sheets. If you don't believe me, read the dozens of previous posts where they prove to have bad information.heibk201 likes this.

Just want to put this out there: Brian is to Klick what Major Nelson is to Xbox. Some of the best P R I've seen in a company. Immediate responses, professional but friendly, helpful, seemingly cool enough for an invite to a beer. Klick has scored a permanent bookmark from me, and whenever they offer something I want, if offered at a remotely competitive price, they'll have my business.KlickOnline, roydok and iori9999 like this.

for 999€ http://www.amazon.de/Lenovo-Noteboo..._2?ie=UTF8&qid=1404825191&sr=8-2&keywords=y50
but somehow there is one listed for 999,01€ with: i7, 8gb ram, 2gb vram, 1tb SHDD, win 8.1

do you think it´s a mistake? -
-
Lol, take everything from online chat with a huge mound of salt.
-
This is the authorised website to be able to help customers in any inquiry. The guy(Mike) is from the technical department of the Lenovo. Why do you destain it. It is obvious he knows better than we do. Any other suggestion? coz this issue is really frustrating.
-
Is 48hz really that bad? I'm not a competitive gamer (and I probably won't game at 4k, it's kind of an overkill on a laptop right now - I want 4k for text clarity, graphics, coding and multitasking), but I like watching anime/movies and smooth animations everywhere, so I don't know whether I need any more than that.
-
The amount of incorrect and contradictory information Lenovo representatives have said about this laptop is mindboggling. If you think they know one iota better than an average notebookreview member, you are very mistaken. And that's not even talking about the more experienced posters. Like ChowMeow said, take everything they say with a truckload of salt. Though hell, I think we've even going to run out of salt soon!
-
Wow... You keep on believing those reps man...
It's a software lock. If it wasn't, then why won't Intel's software allow you to change ANY custom resolutions. You can't even change the resolution to anything LOWER than what is on the list. All desktop computers allow this. I can change my desktop graphics settings to 4000x2000 with a 130Hz refresh rate if I wanted to. Sure it would output garbage, but it would still allow it. Intel has the option to change custom resolutions in their software but has intentionally blocked it. No Lenovo rep can convince me this panel can't handle lower res @ 60 Hz unless it physically gets proven.
Want proof that it's locked? Go to the Alienware threads and ask if they can use custom resolutions. Many of them can(not sure about the newest models). -
This applies to all tech support for all companies.
Level 1 tech support = someone who reads you specs and walks you through step by step instructions. There is nothing above and beyond they have written in front of them. If they claim to know something more, it could easily be false. These are the first person you talk to on chat or phone.
Level 1 supervisor = the guy next to them. It's another level 1 tech support who will tell you the same thing.
Level 2 tech support = Someone somewhat knowledgeable about computers that can use logic to work you through problems. They still go off the same spec sheets and still have the same limitations but might be able to add a little more truth to the matter. These guys will honestly tell you that they have never used the machine, if you ask them.
None of these techs know the answer to ALL your questions. They have literally hundreds of machines to provide support for, so how could they?nhasian likes this. -
For all the people asking: no, 48Hz isn't that bad. Most videos and movies run slower than that anyways and unless you're gaming or dragging windows across the screen really quickly, it really isn't a noticeable drop. That said, the whole idea of gaming laptops with strong graphics cards like the GTX860 is to be able to run modern games at maximum framerates. The Y50 4K will not only fail to run the newest games at 60fps but will also fail to run things like Bioshock, World of Warcraft, Minecraft, Nintendo 64 emulators, and even 15-year old computer games at 60fps. The idea that the screen of all things can bottleneck performance like that is just outrageous, in my opinion. Even my inexpensive 4 year old non-gaming laptop can run Majora's Mask on PJ64 at 60fps - the idea that a new computer branded as a "gaming laptop" would perform worse is absurd. I don't even play FPS games but the difference there would be even more significant and noticeable.
Lenovo marketed this laptop as the first 4K touchscreen gaming laptop, but I feel like it's done a bad job integrating all three points. I think the best bet right now is the Y50 Touch because it at least checks off two of the boxes, unlike the other options - the Y50 FHD Non-Touch lacks the touchscreen (which admittedly isn't that big of a deal) and obviously isn't 4K, while the Y50 4K currently also lacks a touchscreen and more importantly lacks top gaming-grade framerates. It's too bad Lenovo couldn't have equipped the Y50 with a high-quality FHD or UHD IPS panel like MSI did with the GS60 Ghost/Ghost Pro. I would trade in Touch capability for a non-reflective display if it meant keeping colour vibrancy and pop. The panel MSI used couldn't have even been that much more expensive for them to implement. Or heck, even the matte TN panel from the Y510p would have been good. The Y50 Touch has an okay screen when calibrated a bit and the glossy finish does help colour vibrancy, but I have to admit it is worse than other options out there. I still love my machine and am having some fun with the touchscreen, but I don't understand why Lenovo didn't just use a better panel. -
what is wrong with locking the screen Hz? seriously? are you able to go beyond than 130 Hz on your desktop computer? you cant coz even if you made with overclocking, it is harmful for your monitor. It is the same issue. They lock at the 48 Hz coz it is harmful to go beyond. Locking the lower resolution is company choice.
-
So extra 12 fps make such a difference in gaming? And there is absolutely no way to let the 4k panel run at 60hz at FHD resolution? No hacks or something?
It's still a really attractive model for me, but this makes me worry somewhat. -
No, 12fps won't make games unplayable or anything. But if you're willing to sacrifice fps on even undemanding games like that just to have a nice screen, there are frankly better options out there than the Lenovo Y50. For example, the mid-range Dell XPS 15 can be bought for around $1700 and is better in every way other than gaming fps and possibly annoying coil whine. That model has far more battery life than the Y50, a nicer screen, and even better build quality (though the Y50 is also excellent in that department). The 2015 model won't have coil whine and will be a lot more powerful too. Or you can go for the Asus N550JK or the upcoming Asus NX500 or a multitude of other computers.
There are currently no hacks to get 60fps. Everyone with a Y50 4K is at Intel's mercy: they have to release new drivers to break the lock. Which may or may not happen. -
Seriously, 12 frames per second is nothing to worry about as long as you are not a hardcore pro-gamer. Yeah it sucks for FPS and fighting games, but if you are a casual gamer, you will not notice a significant or game breaking performance. If you are playing new games or soon to be released games, the 860m will not get much above 48 fps on high or ultra settings anyways.
-
FYI, My desktop monitor was advertised as 60 Hz and was overclockable to 120 Hz. That wasn't my point though. In your earlier post, you were trying to discredit Brian because of your little conversation with the Lenovo rep. You asked the rep if it was software locked, the rep said not that he was aware, you believed him and then immediately aimed to point fingers at Brian for holding back information. My point is, the 4k panel IS software locked, so right there the rep had no clue. If it wasn't software locked, I would be allowed to increase the resolution/refresh rate as I pleased.
-
At this point I wish it only had the 860M without the Intel, heh.
Out of pure curiosity, what is the 4k screen model/manufacturer?
TheHam, Arcturar, thanks, I get the general idea. I'm not much of a gamer so I guess it wouldn't really kill me to game at 48fps max. I don't play online games other than Ragnarok or Vindictus-style ones anyway. -
I am not accusing "Brian" as in person. I want technology partners to be more active for customer needs and inquiries. Almost all of the tech products are made in far east. It forces western partners to be more agile to respond customers with hell yeah detailed questions. If you are selling the product, I will question you coz I am paying tons of money and wait the answer as quick as possible. Otherwise, you will loose me. Coz I am an individual customer and you are "as a company" in the competition battle.
-
Some accusations were made (a little strong, if you ask me). And they were rebuffed (a bit strongly in some cases, if you ask me). But it's a valid discussion, and some valid points are being made. Please, everybody, just try to avoid inflammatory language and tone when making your points. That's all.

Brian or Klick Online or whatever you prefer to call him has been absolutely excellent. In all of my electronics purchases ever he is the only representative who has actively tried to help me out. Just the fact that he's been participating in this thread for so long speaks volumes. Klick is a smaller company and have to make up for lack of fame with excellent customer service, and they definitely deliver. I can personally vouch for them. Implying that he's withholding information just because some Lenovo rep (who apparently isn't "a company" according to you?) told you some bs is not nice.roydok and PsylentStorm like this.

Trust me, I wish there was something more that we could do to get an answer than to escalate it as far up the chain at Lenovo as we are able to .. This is Lenovo - the same reps that will still tell you that Y40's still have backlit keyboards and Y50's have "integrated" Blu-Ray drives. Their chat and phone reps go by a script and spec sheet, and sometimes with a smattering of their own opinions as well. If there was any way to get an answer, or to get it faster, on this issue - I would be the first one to do so. I just sent another follow-up this morning to our contact. My personal opinion is that IF there is a updated driver being worked on, that it probably won't come out anytime soon as Lenovo has to go to Intel who has to update the driver, test it, and release it .. The only thing we know for a fact is that the display IS software locked .. So the rep you spoke to was wrong on that account first and foremost. Now that doesn't mean the display is also incapable as well - but the two aren't necessarily connected.Earlcooo likes this. -

Just got a small update on the Touch UHD - they ARE making them .. the current "soft" date for release is September (heavily subject to change).
-
Gave in and ordered a Y50 (i7 4700, 8 GB, 860M 2 GB), an SSD, and a copy of Windows 7 (personal preference) from NewEgg, since it would take too long to get direct from Lenovo. It will be replacing a ThinkPad T420 with integrated graphics so I can actually play WoW at something besides lowest everything at 20 fps. That ThinkPad is going in the drawer for when road warrior business needs arise.

Brian, sent you an email, from the Miller address. Thanks!
