Correction. If you can use a 8 inch FHD display unscaled then you will feel at home on native 4k 15.6 inch.

Anyone thinks the y50 will get a processor upgrade when broadwell comes out during the summer?
-
-
-
I have no idea what Broadwell will bring to the table, probably DDR4 and lower max temperatures from what ive heard. However Haswell is still very decent and you can always undervolt. -
I mistakenly considered 4k to be 2xfullHD when it's actually 4xfullHD ( 15" screens surface are aproximately 2x11" so that's where my calculation came from)
Kudos on spotting my mistake.
The argument of increased work surface(with 200% scaling) still stands...especially for video/photo editing.
Also since windows 8.1 itself does not suffer from the scaling issues of the past one can argue that it also benefits from 4k.
Please do note that all apps are already created with high DPI in mind ...only 3rd party software running in desktop mode still has some issues with scaling. -

Lenovo rep just told me that we'll get a full list of models/specifications in about 2.5 weeks from now (or mid-April)

For those interested at frame rates on 4K games:
R290X does better than the 780Ti due to the latter having less VRAM. -
Who right in their mind would play on ultra on 4K anyway... and even more, with AA
-
There are some Games that should play fine at that resolution on modest hardware.. Like D3..
Obviously for intense games just keep dialing down a notch on the resolution until you get an experience that suits you. -
Im getting the y40, but if I were to get the y50, I would definitely add the 4k to it. Higher resolution is always better. It's not just used in games. You could use it for multimedia stuff, like watching movies (in the near future). It also provides great viewport for photo / video manipulations.
it's a nice thing to have and If it doesnt work for you, you can just simple switch from 3840x2160 to 1920x1080 but not the other way around. -
But for what I do, (excel, SAP/oracle/etc.), the scaling experience is sub par. Again, this is from my personal first hand experience; not something I read on an internet forum. I guess your argument would be that the 4K is not designed and does not benefit for users like myself, blah blah blah. Well, I am totally fine with that. Just want to share my experience on 4K. Peace -

Can anyone confirm if this is the GPU on the y40?!? -

A 4GB video card would be welcome on the Y50 though. Shame the 860M has only 2GB, the Y50 needs more VRAM than the Y40 by a longshot.hailgod likes this. -
Hey guys, how's it going?
I'm new to the forums and have an opinion question to ask regarding the Y50 if you'd all be so kind:
I recently entered the market for a new laptop and purchased the ASUS Q550LF-BSI7T21 from Best Buy for $999.99. I have been fairly happy with it since purchasing - it has an attractive design, runs nice and smoothly, no issues, etc. But then I learned of the impending release of the Y50 (and its superior specs & form factor) and am thinking it may very well be worth it to return the ASUS and wait until the Y50 finally drops (I can survive on my old laptop until then). I've been holding out on a decision waiting for the models and price points to be released, but of course Lenovo has been dead silent on that front.
So I'm now at a crossroads where my return window is about to close, so if I were to return the ASUS to later get the Y50, it would be at the risk of not knowing whether or not I'll be able to land the Y50 with the desired specs and price range. I'm willing to go above the $999 price point to the $1300 range, as I was going to purchase an mSata SSD for the ASUS anyway, but again, I don't know if the desired specs will fall in that range.
Here's the link for the ASUS product page/specs for comparison's sake:
Asus 15.6" TouchScreen Laptop 8GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive Q550LF-BSI7T21 - Best Buy
Ideally I'd like the Y50 with the GTX 860M option, backlit keyboard, 8GB memory is fine as I can upgrade later. 4K would be nice, but I'm fine with FHD touch screen if the 4K blasts it out of budget. Same with SSD - would be great to get it in package, but can live with upgrading an HDD later on if SSD shoots price too high. I love the more compact form factor, more future-proofed specs, built-in sub-woofer, and won't miss the optical drive the ASUS has.
SO, my question is with all things considered (specs, reliability of ASUS vs Lenovo, etc etc), do you guys think the model I'd be looking for will be within my price range, and is it worth the risk to return the ASUS for the unknown while holding out hope I can upgrade from a dual core i7 to a quad core + better graphics card, form factor, etc within said price range?
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read through this and for any advice you might have.
Cheers. -

That asus doesn't look like a great deal to begin with. The y50 will be worth the wait.
-
I only said that the next gen software will be designed with 4k in mind
Also like greedness said...you can always switch to fullHD if the software you are using doesn't scale well.
However when you will get your hands on 4k content then you'll probably be happy you coughed up that extra dough for the UHD screen. -

All jokes aside though, it seems that it's been on stock on distribution and retailers since last week and is only waiting for the open price.

Appreciate the response. I haven't had any problem with the ASUS, and rather like it, but just think it's silly to hang onto something inferior with the Y50 coming out at a similar price point with better features pretty much across the board. So it looks like I'm going to go for it, thanks again!

I'm also in the market for a Y50, but if it's 1000+ Euros for the non-touch 1080p version with NVIDIA graphics I will pass and get a discounted Y510p instead.
I hate how everything is "Up to" on this model. -
Today I had some adrenaline rush when I see the lenovo site changed its home page. I've never been so disappointed in my life.
-
Oh and btw, I did my weekly chat support and today I asked about the Z40 / Z50 too. He said it will be released on the 2nd week of April. According to Lenovo.com, it should've been released on March though. If this happens to the Y-series as well, then we'll be looking for about June 2nd week... If that's the case, then I'll just hibernate for now...
