4K screen will be IPS. I don't know about the FHD one, i suspect not.

I suspect that the 4K screen will either be TN if the notebook is relatively cheap or IGZO IPS if it's expensive.

The Yoga 2 Pro was 950$ on launch, and was the first laptop (IIRC) to have a 13 inch QHD+ IPS display. Knowing how cheap the Y series is relative to the hardware specs inside Lenovo *might* be able to pull this off, especially knowing that a few (not all) Y510p's shipped with the 95% gamut panel of the W530.

Hey guys, I've been following this thread for a few weeks, being that i'm very excited for the y50. Right now i'm using a pretty terrible laptop, I've had it for almost 3 years now and its getting rough. So i'm looking at the y50 (along with a few others). I've heard a few reports that it will be coming out in May? Does anyone know anything about that?

Videos from CES show an IPS or IGZO display for the 4k screen because viewing angles where arround 160º-170º so definetly not TN.

Can't say anything about the fullHD version tho.

IGZO is not a panel type, which is why I said IGZO IPS: IGZO vs IPS: which one is better in terms of display quality

It's used to save power which is important for a laptop with an ultra-dense display such as the Y50 with 4K.

My bad on the "IGZO or IPS " part. You're right about that....should have said IGZO IPS.

Anyway that was not the point of my post. The point was and still is that if they don't use a different 4k display than the one at CES it will DEFINETLY NOT be TN due to the fact that it has extraordinary viewing angles.

Just found this option on Newegg and it comes with a couple free goodies (either a free 50 inch TV or a free MSI kit) depending on what option you choose. Looks to have pretty comparable specs as the Y50 with the 860m and is thin/light. Likely a little more expensive than what the Y50 will sell at, but could be a good option for those who can't wait until May or June.

It's a nice laptop and plenty powerful, especially the graphics. However, I think that it's very expensive for its specs, considering the base model has a 500 gb 5400 RPM drive. I'd say look at the XPS series, especially the XPS 13, as it has a better value-for-money ratio.

Well, more power to everyone who can hold out for a few more months. Personally, I think I'll be deciding between a MSI GE60 or Sager NP7358 over the next couple weeks and if the Y50 isn't announced by then, too bad.

I called Lenovo and tried to pre-order a Y50 and they said it will likely come out in May. I really want a 4K display so is the Y50 pretty much the only game in town other than the Toshiba?

A 17" display would work better with the 4K resolution but I could not find any upcoming 17" 4K laptops on the horizon. I'm surprised Dell or Lenovo does not have a 17" 4K laptop coming out as far as I could tell...

the z40 / z50 was supposed to be released last March. No reason to believe Lenovo's announcements or ETAs anymore.

I just got a sudden realization of the truth. I can't believe I didnt realize this before. They wont release it this April, they won't release it on May, they will release it on June, just in time for E3. It makes perfect sense. It was their plan all along. I mean, it is the perfect time to release a gaming laptop, right in the heart of the biggest gaming convention of the year.

E3 is really more focused on console gaming now days. I seriously doubt that Lenovo cares about the effect of E3 if there is any. But still, you might be right about the June release, or maybe even July...

Judging by this picture here the Y50 will not be compatible with the Y510p power adapters:

Y510p was just "released", not even advertised, and Lenovo didn't even make a video on their channel for it. I was just browsing Lenovo.com shortly after the release of Haswell and i'm like "oh, they released this model without telling us", anyways I impulse bought mine because my old laptop was on it's last legs.

Just to clarify that was the major trade show it was attached too I believe. You can search for "y510p computex."

Likely less "hoopla" since it was likely considered a more minor refresh, just updated Where's the y40/y50 might be considered a more significant one due to the chassis redesign and a new direction for the line.

Y580 was also launched at Computex (2012).

A late May availability seems like it would fit the various scenarios/points that have been mentioned.

I agree, especially because a GTX and a touchscreen together will have way more power consumption than the Y510p.

On a side note, looking at that picture makes me question how thin/light the Y50 will actually be. I get that it has I think the best QHD display, at 3840 x 2160 pixels, but does anyone else think that it will be significantly heavier than the Y510p? Sometimes Lenovo includes the weight of the power brick in the total weight, but I can't see this computer being less than the 5.7 lbs that they say. The old generation felt lighter because of weight distribution as well; I don't think that the Y50 will be this way, considering the "thin and light" quality. That brings me to my next point: people have different specs, but not including how the edge tapers, what will the thickness of the Y50/Y40 actually be?

Mostly it will be the touchscreen that will drain energy. 860M has only 45W TDP which is about the same as the 755M. Without the touchscreen and 4k it should be around the same as a single GPU y510p. On lenovo's advertisement it said it will be 24mm thick, which is most likely the case. Considering Razer can pull their as s off with 4 lbs on the blade 14, I don't think Lenovo lacks the ability to make their laptops lighter

The blade 14 is like 2kg. Not 4 lbs. Its only like 200 grams lighter than the y410p

Blade is 2kg with adapter, Y410p is 2.6 kg with adapter.

Also adding SLI to the Y410p adds like half a pound of weight.

FWIW I just had a chat session on the Levo Web site and they claimed the Y50 is expected to come out at the end of the month. Here's the chat transcript:

Steve: Hi, when can I place a pre order for the Y50 with he 4K display?
_Anthony R: we do not have a release date on them just yet and we do not do pre orders here at lenovo sorry
_Anthony R: we are hoping they will be released by the end of the month
Steve: That's useful to know. Thanks so much. Look forward to ordering my Y50 towards the end of the month then!
