I already linked a youtube video showing that the main exhaust vent is behind the screen hinge and is 2/3 of the width of the laptop....the same like the Asus N550 and most other slim laptops nowadays.

"IGZO is not actually a panel type. It's a type of transistor used in a display's TFT backplane, which is what controls the display panel (whether that panel is TN, IPS, or even OLED). It uses Indium-Gallium-Zinc-Oxide as a semiconductor instead of Silicon."
So yes it's possible for the panel to be IGZO IPS but not very likely considering the rather high price of IGZO tech.

So while I wait for the Y0 to come out is there a higher end workstation class laptop on the horizon with a 4K display?

So I guess it is just the Y50 and the one by Toshiba, which I am not very interested in. When I was chatting with Lenovo sales on their Web site, they did say something about several 4K laptops being about to be released. I'm buying this for video editing and Visual Studio development so I'd hate to buy the Y50 and find a better laptop by Lenovo or someone a month or two later... -
Too bad Lenovo does not have a W-series workstation with a 17" display and a full 4K 3840 x 2160 display coming out. That would be my ideal power laptop. -
Dell has one QHD workstation ...not UHD sadly
The only real 4k workstation will be the toshiba...atleast for now.
If you can hang on a few months more I'm sure there will be several workstations released with new gen GPUs and maybe 4K asswell.
The main advantage you would get frim a workstation vs the y50 in terms of video editing would be a high% gamut display.
The consumer displays don't come anywhere near the ones they put on workstations in term of color fidelity. -
I'm wondering that if the battery life of 1080p non-touch screen model will be significantly greater than that of 4k touch screen. If so, I'll definitely choose previous one! Hope there is no big difference...
-
It's a bit pathetic that Dell doesn't have a 4K laptop on the horizon that we know of. Given the high resolution, I actually would have preferred a 17" display but the 15.6 will have to do. Leno just need to hurry up and release this.
I am just glad the days of the retarded 1080P display days are over. -
y50 page crashed. maybe updating the page to show specs and stuff?

is there any more upcoming 4k laptops from lenovo?
-
Just saw it's going to have a built in DVD/blue ray. Why the hell do people even offer DVD-only drives on these laptops?
I'm willing to bet money that they will not even be offering a blu ray version of any Y50 at the initial release.
Toshiba just did this massive up with their 4k laptop as well. At least give us the option to watch 1080 instead of standard quality DVD if, heaven forbid, we used the drive you refuse to phase out.
At first I used to be mad that laptops were doing away with the DVD/blu ray drive but then I accepted it and was even happier hoping that manufacturers would not force their dvd-only drives. ESPECIALLY on a media oriented laptop -
What is your source regarding the DVD/blue ray drives ?

Integrated optical drive section. I almost ing guarantee to keep the price down, they won't offer any initial version with Blue Ray. -
Thanks! Although it seems odd since no optical drive appears on their pictures (either left or right side)
-
It's not in the videos showcasing the Y50 either. I've seen some very slim optical drives before, but whether or not the Y50 will have it is not confirmed. The showcased models in most videos were prototypes and the website is most likely telling the truth, and hopefully, is not a mistake. I don't really have the need for any optical drives, but sometimes, you might need it for very important matters.
-
Sure but I'd rather have it external to save some weigh and thickness
-
Yes, and not to mention you could get an external optical drive at a fairly cheap price nowadays.
-
It was actually specified in a presentation of the laptop that they removed the optical drive in order to make the laptop thinner.
It is possible however that there will be an external unit bundled with the machine. -
Has anyone had experience with the 10 point touch screen? I have never used a Windows 8 computer with touch. How does it compare to an iPad's touch screen? What functionality does it serve other than for scrolling through web pages and the menus?
-
My only real concern with the Y50 at this point is the quality of the 1080p screen... I'm a little worried that they'll go with a TN screen to make it a "budget" option. I doubt that I'll be able to spring for the 4k screen...

I'm really excited about the y50, but if it doesn't match my expectations, I'll probably go with the n56. I still have 6-8 mos before i'm in the market, though, so i still have time to see if there's a refresh. -
N56 advantages- slightly more powerfull GPU but with much higher power consumption and better sound. -

Does anyone know when XoticPc adds new laptops? I might want to purchase the Y50 from them instead of Lenovo depending on the prices and modification I want.
-
Just talked with one rep last night, she told me that the release date will be 15th.... so there's 20 days more to wait...

I was told yesterday, near the end of April. No set date, but to check back the end of the month.
